One of the best cookbooks in my collection

R. A. Walker's husband here. My wife bought me this book as a treat while I was out of town visiting my mom. I have read it thorouh twice now (and when was the last time you did that with a cookbook?) and I have to say that I am totally in love with it. I have a pretty large collection of cookbooks, and I tend to pare them regularly of the ones that don't get used. I recently purged another Korean cookbook which had beautiful photographs and completely inscrutable recipes. I am certain that Cook Korean! will be on my cookbook shelf forever. Robin Ha has demystified a cuisine that I love to eat but, despite being a good and experienced cook of multiple cuisines and styles, have been afraid to try and make at home. I feel, after reading it, not only that I can make the recipes in the book, but that I have a handle on Korean cooking in a general sense. I tested this by looking up some recipes online and yep, they make a lot more sense to me now. Something about the comic book format (and I'm a lover of comics as well as of cuisine) communicates the process of cooking this food to me in a way that a bare recipe never did. Robin's story of her awakening to a love of home cooking and of the traditions that inform Korean cuisine are charming, informative, and really connect with the reader. If you long for the taste of yukgaejang and kimchi jiigang at home, but find these dishes intimidating, BUY THIS BOOK. You will not be sorry. You will make delicious Korean food at home. It will make you happy in your belly.

Vegetarian Korean cooking

Um, I just love this cook book. As a non-Korean with a Korean husband to cook for, easy and delicious Korean cook books are hard to come by. What is even harder is a vegetarian cookbook. I used one Korean vegetarian cookbook, however the recipes were limited. While this cookbook is not vegetarian, these dishes are super easy to substitute tofu or other meatless options while still being simple and delicious! Can't wait to try everything in this book! Disclaimer: I've only cooked the noodle dishes along with the banchan.

The first and only cookbook I've read cover to cover

This book is much more than a cookbook! You learn about Korean food and culture through entertaining comics, and the recipes show you how you can make many different dishes using the same handful of staples. The illustrations (there must be 100s) are adorable and descriptive. I especially love the gorgeous watercolors that mark each new chapter--the paintings somehow make the dishes look more delicious than high-res/styled photographs would. Even if you don't cook you'll enjoy the author's stories told through comics, the amazing artwork on each spread, and you'll probably end up cooking some tasty treats from the book!

Well written and explained.

I’ve loved Korean Cooking ever since I was exposed to it and have spent years learning how to cook it. I prefer Korean cookbooks that showcase simple home cooking (the best in any cuisine in my opinion) and this one does it in spades. It’s not a long list of recipes but she covers all the basics and the illustrations make it easy to understand. She also provides cultural context for the dishes which I love. There are substitutions for several hard to get items or instructions on how to make them. Some recipes do have items that require access to a Korean market (specialty noodles or yellow daikon for example) but if you really want to make them and can’t get to a market there’s always online. I would rate this one of my favorite Korean cookbook along with Dok Suni.

Great introduction to Korean cooking!

I love this book! I was a little worried about the comic book format originally, but it really, truly works. Per a normal cookbook, there are written instructions, but they are accompanied by creative drawings that makes clear exactly what she intends. Almost every recipe occupies two pages as a result, but it really is no different than a more conventional cookbook with instructions on one page and a photo on the next. I’ve been to Korea hundreds of times, and and very familiar with many dishes in this book, whether for casual meals, or for a more elaborate dinner for guests. I’ve yet to find a dud in the bunch: in particular, the fusion recipes toward the end of the book are nearly legendary in Korea, and they are great! The kimchi recipe is the best I’ve found, a bit on the spicy side (even for Korean friends), but as it ferments it makes a kimchi jjigae that is the stuff of legends itself. Highly, highly recommended, and please buy it to reward Robin Ha for her truly creative format!

The recipes are easy to follow and I have had little difficulty finding ...

My family usually hides in fear at the thought of my 'wok terrorism' but this book may be the holy grail I needed to woo them back to my asian kitchen efforts. The recipes are easy to follow and I have had little difficulty finding the majority of ingredients. The cartoons are fun yet descriptive, and none of the recipes are complex enough to require multi-step images. The korean tacos are amazing and the marinade was equal to anything I have had at a good korean BBQ establishment. This cook book is on 'repeat play' and I have yet to screw any of these dishes up, which is a major complement to the author. Kudos!

Actually I can Cook Korean!

Cook Korean! by Robin Ha is a delightful cookbook that de-mystifies Korean cusine for the average (non-Korean) home cook. The book is well-organized and the intro section is just right- not too long, introducing the book's intent and describing ingredients to look for to make authentic Korean recipes. I didn't know if I would like a comic format so much, but her comics and writing style are easy and fun to follow, and I appreciated the little bits of info distributed throughout the book as well. Though there are no photos, the many drawings really help me understand what to do, from cutting ingredients to the right size to how the dish should look at the end. Chapters on street food, cocktails and anju, and Korean fusion dishes take care to acknowledge other delicious influences and features of Korean food and culture. We already had the ingredients for Oisobagi kimchi in our kitchen, and there will definitely be homemade bulgogi and nakji in my near future. I received this review copy from bloggingforbooks in exchange for my honest review, and I can't wait to Cook Korean! I highly recommend this book if you're just getting in to cooking Korean cuisine at home, it's a great, easy to follow guide and fun to read.

Very interesting concept that works surprisingly well of combining comic book illustration with food recipes!

This book is so much fun! Saw the author at a book festival doing a cooking demo and got my copy signed. I live in a large metropolitan area and have access to international markets, which for seaweeds and some ingredients you will definitely need (or Amazon) but at least once the initial purchases are made for your pantry you can use the individual ingredients many times. Her recipes are fairly straightforward, some have more steps than others, but everything I have made has been good. The seaweed salad recipe has become a regular in our lineup, and what a great way to get greens and minerals in the body during this summer heat when greens aren't growing much. Its educational, practical, and I think would be a good gateway for kids and teens to hook them into an interest in food. Wish the author would collaborate with other cooks to illustrate a series of these type of books. I find without photographs, rather, its hand drawn of all the steps and the finished product helps the reader to not have as much stress about your dish not looking like a very stylized food photo like most cookbooks have these days, and focus on having an enjoyable time making simple good home meal preparations. Its also educational with Korean culture tidbits spread throughout the book. UPDATE NOV 2016: Recommend The Adventures of Fat Rice: Recipes from the Chicago Restaurant Inspired by Macau for another unique cookbook that has some hand drawn comic style technique dispersed throughout, mixed with photographs and cultural/personal stories. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1607748959/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2TCSOTSSKDROY&coliid=I38O4T8GSHZ7G6

What a fun read! I bought this as a present for my sister and we spent an enjoyable (and at time contentious :)) evening making the Japchae recipe. We ended up making a few changes here and there but it was delicious. I highly recommend this book.

This book is by far the BEST Korean cook book we've had

This book. This book is by far the BEST Korean cook book we've had. We've tried many a Korean cook book but none of them have all the recipes we love. You've got your standard bibimbap, bulgogi, kimbap, ect. But then we get fancy and throw in some kalguksu (thank lordy) and nangmyeon (the ultimate summer dish to take you to slurp town). There will never be a book better than this. Now let's talk illustration. This book has some great illustrations and it's perfect for letting your kids looks through to learn about Korea and it's incredible culture. Our copy is covered in sesame oil and gojujeong and it's still banging out all the hits. We'll definitely be buying more to give as gifts. 감사합니다!

I never liked cooking Korean food as much as I enjoyed eating it. However, since my mother came to live with me I had to learn. She has dementia. I bought few cookbooks and they were ok. I was lucky to get one good recipe out of them. I have gotten over ten out of this cookbook and counting. I did substitute Korean soju for white cooking wine. Had to play with some rice vinegar in one recipe but mostly it is a cook book. My mom would be starving. Thanks for your hard work.

I absolutely love this cook book!

All of the recipes I tried were really easy to comprehend and written in a way that even people who don't do much cooking would be able to figure out. And for those who do cook, it is easy enough to start adjusting to your specific tastes. If you have eaten a fair amount of korean food you will be able to identify what it is you like more or less of. It was a very nice cook book, It had pictures showing how to prepare the food, what order to mix ingredients in and how long to cook each portion before adding the next ingredient. I was really happy to see that they included a section showing the main ingredients in Korean cooking and some of the items had Hangul characters on them so it is easier to find items at the store (I am currently in Korea so all the food is labeled in Hangul)

beautiful and so much fun!

I bought this for my future mother-in-law. I cooked for my fiance's family members the other day and she was very interested in Korean food. She's a vegetarian so she's always looking for new ways to incorporate more vegetables to her diet. You can only eat salads so often before you get bored! This book is not only very comprehensive, it is also so fun to read! Lastly, the manga style of the book just sold it for me. My future mother in law is obsessed with this book.

Easy, fun and YUM

I love Korean cuisine and am a visual learner, so I had to add this book to my small collection. I'm so glad I did. Everything is clearly drawn with helpful text - step by step - which makes it easier and fun. Way better than photos! I've made a number of things and everything came out totally yum. Additionally, there's cultural facts and items that are new to me. I'm hoping Robin Ha will create another cookbook. I'm ready to pre-order!

Best book to learn how to cook Korean food.

This cook book will teach you all the basic and most common Korean recipes and dishes. The author does a masterful job teaching you how to cook every dish with comic book cartoon illustrations and stories. It`s a lot of fun to read the stories while learning about the recipes and also learning a lot about Korean culture. Because it`s a fun and entertaining book you will learn much quicker from this book than from others in my opinion. If you want to learn how to prepare your own Korean food this book is a must have. Learn How to Prepare Kimchi, Kimbap ,bulgogi ,yukejang and much more

Great Intro Book for Korean Food

This is a really well-done book. The pictures and comics are very entertaining. I followed the recipes and made two different Kimchis yesterday. They look great and I cannot wait to see how they taste. I have a handful of recipes that I will be trying. I ended up getting the physical book instead of the ebook because the comic style makes it a pleasure to read in person.

A great intro cookbook for korean cooking

Absolutely love the fact it's a graphic novel style cookbook. The recipes are wonderful (very similar to my mother's korean home cooking). It's great to be able to follow recipes of traditional dishes (my mom/grandmother would just grab handfuls and taste as they cooked so figuring out amounts was difficult). Very easy to follow along and the explanations of ingredients is perfect. A wonderful concept as well as an excellent execution.

Fun, easy to follow, and wonderful tasty results follow

I bought this book as a gift for my college age daughter who loves to cook. As a novice to Korean cooking (but a fan of all cuisines Asian, I flipped through those pages, and was immediately caught. I made a few of the dishes- all easy and straightforward to make, all with wonderfully authentic and fresh tastes, and all to rave reviews. So, the next step....yes, I had to buy a second copy to give to my daughter! I would recommend this cookbook to anyone who wants to try their hand at the tastes of Korea. The stories worked into the recipes are fun, the pictures take away much of the uncertainty of "did I do it right" and the results are great! 2 thumbs up

Leave the soju for the drinks.

The format was a tad busy but as a korean I enjoyed it. As to the recipes... the soju was totally unnecessary and no... koreans in general do not add an alcoholic ingredient to all their recipes.

Fun & Interesting Cookbook for Everyone

I love this book!!! Usually I hate cookbooks, as they tend to be a little dry and boring for my taste. But this one is completely different in the best way. The illustrations are adorable, beautiful, and overall fun for the eyes. Also, the information Robin Ha uses to contextualize the food in Korea/Korean culture adds to the experience of reading and cooking the recipes. Ha teaches you a little about why these foods became staples to the culture and how outside influences have been integrated into food. The recipes are easy to follow, especially since the author has included some basics about the main ingredients used in Korean cooking. Highly recommend this book!

So great!

I LOVE THIS COOKBOOK! It's so great and informative of some great Korean dishes and explains well! Where this book really shines, though, is the AWESOME illustrations! I literally read this cookbook cover to cover simply because of the great illustrating. It makes the book cute, fun, and funny too! Seriously, I'm so glad I bought this. I have a few other Korean cookbooks, and in all honesty, the recipes themselves aren't something you can't get somewhere else, but the illustrations alone make it worth every penny. If you like Korean food and super cute, fun illustrations, you'll love this book!

This makes cooking fun!

I have been looking for a book like this! It’s so easy to follow and so fun! Just looking at the cartoons makes me want to cook. It’s beautifully done and very well put together and organized. I also liked that I can learn about the ingredients. That’s a nice touch! It’s a great beginners guide for someone like me who doesn’t know anything about Korean cooking and wants to learn about the culture and the food (my boyfriend is from Korea) I recommend it! 👍🏻

Easy To Understand! Great Cook Book

Very Well Written Easy to follow Recipes I love Korean food 😋 The recipes really are easy to follow, and I love how Robin Ha has illustrated her adorable comic book style Recipe book! Easy to understand, The writer tells us a bit about her life and how this comic cook book came about, also some recipes I've never seen in other Korean cook books, I know I'll enjoy making all of these yummy recipes ♥️ Very well written!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Don't know what ya'all are talking about...

Difficult to follow in the comic book format. Difficult to make out the hand lettered text. Way too many ingredients. Thought this was supposed to make cooking korean easy. I find better recipes when I google a particular dish. No wonder it is only 1.99

Recipes were easy to follow and a fun cookbook.

The cookbook was very easy to follow and the art work was interesting and added to the fun of doing new recipes. I'll definitely use it often and give it as a gift.

Wonderful Storytelling!

My husband purchased me this book for my birthday last year and I love it! It's funny, easy to follow, and because of the story-telling quality, so easy to remember! The first recipe I read was how to cook rice properly and ever since then, I've never burned rice and I've been able to walk people through cooking it through the phone! Thank you!

Best Korean cookbook out there!

I usually am not the type of person to write Amazon reviews, but I wanted to share just how amazing this cookbook is. I am not a very good cook but I thought I would get this book because I love Korean culture and wanted to try to learn something different. This book makes cooking so easy! The directions are not only visually appealing but extremely easy to follow. I was worried about not finding each ingredient, but everything is at your local H Mart! Anyways, the pictures attached are of Kimchi Jjigae and Tteokbokki- and they tasted phenomenal! I could not recommend this cookbook more.

Easy recipes...

The recipes are easy to follow, it’s pretty cool because it’s a comic book style, for me that’s a big plus! It’s different but that’s what makes it so unique! I’m an avid cookbook collector and cook a lot, if you’re an adventurous eater and like trying different kinds of dishes, this is pretty cool!

Great basic info for beginners to cooking Korean and enough ...

Great basic info for beginners to cooking Korean and enough recipes for the slightly advanced cooks. We are not Korean, but we love their food, this book helps us to make things that taste like take out at our favorite places to eat. And it includes descriptions of items that are in your grocery store but you might have never noticed them. Yummy and easy: a good combo. My kids really like these meals to.

Graphic Novel Form

I work in a library and all the middle schoolers LOVE this cook book, they get so excited after they realize it is a graphic novel. The recipes are very easy to follow and the visuals are an absolute delight to look at.

Just how I remember!

I don't have any Korean influences in my family anymore and I was missing the food so much lately; but I'd never actually cooked any Korean food. I took a chance on this purchase and am so happy I did. Everything is explained so nicely and the recipes are 2 pages long max. Including the delicious looking art. Everything is so easy to make, too!

Adorable cookbook

Bought as a gift for a couple. They absolutely love it, they send me pictures from it all the time. They are always telling me how great of a gift it was. Definitely recommend!

I can stop calling my mom every day

As someone who doesn’t have time to try and decipher my mom’s vague instructions over the phone in a different state during COVID, this is some good material. Highly recommend, anyone can learn

Great Recipe Book

My boyfriend is Korean and missed eating Korean food after leaving his parents home. I wanted to be able to cook some for him and after looking at a couple books, decided on this one! I've already made a couple recipes and they've been great and he definitely has enjoyed them. Easy to read and understand! Must have!

Very easy to use, cute, funny!

Love this book! I bought it for my daughter on her sweet 16, because she loves everything Korean and it has very clear step by step directions! And cute pictures.

I love this book

I love this book! Its fun, beautiful, and the recipes are great. A major advantage is that you get visual step by step instructions! Not something you get with the overwhelming majority of books. I made the cucumber kimchi, and now is one of my favorite kimchis ever. I can't imagine following this recipe without step by step illustrations. It has spoiled me for other cookbooks ;) the information on Korean culinary history is also great.

A cute fun book!

Love the way this book was coming together with fun comic drawings and colorful illustrations. There are enough simple and basic Korean cooking recipes and they are easy to follow. Pretty authentic too.

Great Book for Someone Who is Tired of the Usual Recipe Book

I got this for my brother-in-law who is 20 and interested in all things Korea but had no experience with the food. He loves comic books and this recipe book is a great option and something he loves. So much fun to read and GREAT recipes

Have a good cookbook stand

We have been loving this cookbook since we unpacked it. Fun, health , & spicy recipes! Still many more to go, we are looking forward to making them all! Many thanks!

I love the spirit in this book and I loved learning ...

My middle-aged brain struggles to fight my way through the riotous illustrations and follow the recipes, but I heard Robin Ha on NPR and was both charmed by her down-to-earth approach to cooking and desperate to learn how to incorporate traditional Korean ingredients into my own kitchen. I love the spirit in this book and I loved learning about Korean culture and mother/daughter dynamics, too.

I love that this book is very simple and straightforward

I became intrigued after hearing about this book while listening to an NPR interview. Coming from someone with no knowledge about anything Korean, I love that this book is very simple and straightforward. Explanations of ingredients are provided as needed. I have not used any exact recipes from this book yet, but I have read it almost cover to cover and purchased ingredients that I use in loose interpretations of the recipes provided. I have all kinds of cookbooks, but none quite like this. I am very happy with it.

This is the best cookbook I own

This is the best cookbook I own! It's creative and has the author's stories with her illustrations. The recipes are spot on! Kasamhabnida!!

Super cute

Love the illustrations. I haven't really cooked anything following these recipes yet, but it's fun to look at and to have in your collection.

Great comic book! Great cookbook!

I wish more cookbooks were presented in this format. To begin with, the graphic format makes everything less daunting and the illustrations make it much easier to understand the text. The clear presentation of the basics gives you the confidence to actually try the recipes. My kimchi came out great!

A different kind of cookbook

I haven't had a chance to make any of the recipes, but they are presented in a very appealing manner. The ingredients lists have a few items that I've never used before, but that will be part of the adventure.

Love this Korean recipe book!!

I love this cookbook! It has great authentic Korean recipes, step by step instructions with illustrated pics. It's written & illustrated with ease & passion. This book was a gift & I ended up keeping it for myself & have made almost everything in it! This recipe book will not disappoint!

Great cookbook

This was excellent! Very good recipes, with good humored hints and viewpoint. I would buy another cookbook from this author!

Great book - tasty recipes and cool comics

Found this somewhat randomly and we've really enjoyed it. The recipes are tasty and the comic offers a little cultural window to go along with them. Reasonable level of complexity - my 11 year old daughter is having a blast with it.

Creative and Informative!

This is really a piece of art! I gave it to my adult daughter for Christmas and it was one of her favorite gifts!

No Regrets. Happy Shopper.

Absolutely love this book. The pictures and directions are super easy to read and follow. My mom is not able to cook so she reads the directions to me while I do the cooking. I have made multiple dishes so far. My one disappointment, which is super super tiny is that there's a picture of the potatoes but no recipe for it. I wish it was included.

I am so in love with this book, so much so that I am writing a review which I don't normally do. I have other cook korean books, but this by far is the best. I love the comic format, so colorful and engaging. The recipes are written in easy step by step directions. The recipes chosen are familiar recipes that most people are familiar with and can use on a daily basis. I love the personality behind the work, especially the acknowledgment at the end of the book. I am an Asian and can relate to the relationship between mother and daughter. Very unique and enjoyable book. I debated whether to order this book or not. I'm glad I did.

Love This

this book is great. funny...easy to read instructions and easy to follow right along. food tastes yummy

Magnetically Wonderful

I have various Korean Cookbooks including "Maangchi's Real Korean Cooking". This beautiful artisy book is on the same level as Maangchi's book. It is wonderful to look at and the recipes are wonderful. The book is great for beginners and a neat tome for people advanced with Korean food and cooking techniques. I had to purchase three more to give to my friends and family.

Awesome, fun cookbook!

We have cooked tons out of this cookbook and have really enjoyed everything so far. The design and drawings are both really well done. In fact, my toddler LOVES looking at the drawings and pictures in this book!

LOVE IT!

Very easy to understand and read. I took the book to my local Asian Market and they were so helpful in helping me find the ingredients. This book is very easy to cook Korean dishes. If you love Korean food, I would recommend this book.

A Great Introduction to Korean Cooking via A Comic Book Format

I purchased this as a gift for my daughter who likes to cook Asian dishes. She loves this comic Korean cookbook. She likes the recipes and thinks the format is great!

Such a fun cookbook! If you like Korean food, buy this book.

Such a fun cookbook! If you like Korean food, buy this book. We love all the illustrations, stories and personality Robin put in here. You won't regret adding this cookbook to your collection. We have cooked quite a bit from it.

Absolutely love

I absolutely love this book! I have made many of the dishes in here and every one of them is delicious. I also like the soju drinks. I have used other recipes for Korean food but this book makes everything so much easier. The comic book feel makes it so easy to get through it as well.

Highly recommend

Awesome and unique cook book. Reads a bit like a novel crossed cookbook. Details are good. Breaks it down for a novice and gives everyday alternatives for hard to find stuff.

educational and entertaining

Can't wait to cook some of these Korean dishes.

This is a fun, easy and informative cookbook

This is a fun, easy and informative cookbook. I have enjoyed reading it and learning about Korean cooking. I am so glad I purchased this cook book.

Best Korean Cookbook!

I got it as a present for my Korean-food loving friend. She was delighted with it. The pictures add humor and fun to cooking. Recipes are easy to follow. There's even a list of all the cupboard essentials to make these dishes happen all on one page.

Recommended!

What a fun cook book! Perfect for the English speaking Westerner who wants to learn to create homestyle Korean dishes. Offers a wide variety of authentic recipes for both the first time chef or the well seasoned cook. Recommended.

A perfect introduction

This is the perfect introduction to a cuisine that may be unfamiliar to some. I grew up eating Korean and already knew how to make one of the dishes presented in this book. However, Robin Ha has managed to inspire me to expand my repertoire beyond Galbi. The illustrations combined with step by step instructions give me confidence that I can make dishes like Kimchi Fried Rice (as opposed to soupy rice glop) and not waste ingredients.

Great cookbook! I like the comics

Great cookbook! I like the comics, but even without the drawings the recipes are easy to follow, and come out great.

Cute addition

Purchased for a friend, but she really enjoyed it. The pictures add a really fun element to it. Definitely worth it for the chef with a lot of cookbooks!

This book is really nice! Some of the recipes could be better (my husband is Korean and can make better versions of what is in the book) but for the most part, this has great pictures, a fun comic feel, and some tasty things to make. Very happy with my purchase.

Love this book

Very entertaining and useful

This book inspired me to go to a Korean grocery store in my neighborhood. I was able to spot the ingredients easily at the store, thanks to the colorful illustrations in the book. I've already tried three recipes this weekend so far! This book offers a lot more than recipes. I had so much fun reading about the author's childhood, her mother and Korean culture. It's one of my favorite books in my bookshelf now.

The art is really well done and the recipes are interesting!

This thing is bigger than I thought it'd be! It was a gift for my sister for Christmas as she's newly married and her husband is from Korea. I wanted to keep looking through it all but I knew I had to get to wrapping it lmao.

Love the photos!

I gave this as a gift and it is very well loved now; used a ton. Recipes are great and easy to follow for a moderate Cook. Looking through it is so fun and the illustrations are wonderful. Arrived on time as well.

Fantastic, kudos to Author

I've read this book a couple of times, even if you don't cook it's fun to read. Tried some simple stuff so far and it's well thought out, more cook books should be this entertaining. 8^}

Great Book and Service

I love this book. It has a lot of good recipes and it is fun to follow. In my opinion, this is a good introduction into Korean cooking. The customer service is excellent. My order was lost in shipping but was quickly replaced by the seller at no cost from me. I would definitely buy from them again.

Amazing!!

This is the best cookbook I have ever seen. The pictures and stories tell you why, not just how. Everything is really simple, I would suggest this for everyone from a seasoned chef to a fan of the cuisine that can do no more than chop!

Such an amazing book! As a Southern boy turned Korean food lover, this delightful collection is a godsend. I now demand all my cookbooks to be in graphic novel format. Please make more!

Fun cookbook with good drawings

Good book, but I got lost in some of the animation. The recipes are simple and relatively easy to follow. This book is fun and has many "homely" recipes like what you'd find at your Korean friends' moms house.

Less intimidating

Wow, Robin makes understanding & cooking Korean less intimidating

A great gift

My boyfriend wanted a cookbook and also loves comics. He loved this. Highly recommend. And easy instructions.

Darn good recipes hidden among the comics

I didn't have great expectations for this little cookbook; it seemed a little gimmicky at first. Then I found myself reading every single word. Then I headed to my kitchen. The author takes great pains to be as accessible and clear in her directions, and I very much appreciated that approach. I'm not knowledgeable about cooking Korean food even though I eat it in restaurants often, but this slim volume helped me understand the basic flavor profiles and essential techniques. It was adapted for a western kitchen, and I had no trouble finding key ingredients in my local grocery store, Asian market, or the Internet. The recipes that I've tried so far have been fabulous, and I especially appreciated that these are basic recipes with tips provided for customization of almost every single one. This is probably the best cookbook I've bought this year.

Four Stars

I have not tried a meal but made a good sauce.

It's a great way to get kids involved and interested in cooking

My daughter is nine and loves this cookbook! It's a great way to get kids involved and interested in cooking!

Fun, fun

Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun! My daughter (13) LOVED cooking with this book. The illustrations and info just make it a great overall experience.

The rare cookbook that's really fun to read! The instructions are clear, even for beginning cooks.

Okay, I've been busy and haven't had time to try these recipes out yet, but let me just tell you how great this book is. The recipes are simple and clearly will be easy to follow. The drawings help you understand exactly how to slice and prepare ingredients. And from my own experience with cooing Asian foods, I can tell these are going to be super tasty. It's also the rare cookbook that's fun to read. I'm considering getting a copy for my niece who's eight and has started cooking and is something of an artist herself. She'd need some serious assistance with the chopping, though. I'm so excited! I can't wait to try these recipes out.

I'm Korean and I approve this book!!! It's AWESOME!

I saw this book on DesignSponge and was super excited because I'm Korean and I love comics! The recipes are truly authentic. Many of the dishes were staples my mom cooked when I was growing up, and it was a treat to finally make these myself. I really can't get over the CHARMING illustrations and details. LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! I wish I could hug Robin Ha. This book means so much to me and I will treasure it for many many years!

I came across an article about this book and I knew it would be the perfect thing for me! A beautifully illustrated cookbook that's fun to read!

Owning a lot of comics and cookbooks, I can safely say Robin Ha's "A comic book with recipes" is the perfect blend of the best of both worlds. Every page is beautifully illustrated with a fun and easy to follow recipe guide for numerous dishes. Not only do you learn how to make a variety of dishes, you get to learn a bit about the unique ingredients, the culture, and the author's experience with cooking. This book is perfect for any comic or cooking enthusiast or for anyone looking how to make Korean food in a fun user friendly way. As an educator, I would definitely recommend it for school age children! Not only would they learn about the food and the culture, the easy to follow illustrations would get any child inspired to cook. I can't wait to try some recipes with my nieces!

Cook Korean

In general, I reall want to like this book. I tried a couple of recipes, and they were successful. But, I must admit, it was kind of hard to follow as a recipe book. Very funny, though!

Easy to follow instructions and everything I've made tastes delicious

Easy to follow instructions and everything I've made tastes delicious. The cartoon format takes a little to get used to (I'm used to more linear instructions with my cookbooks), but overall a solid addition to my cookbook collection.

For ethinic food lovers and also graphic novel (comic book) fans as well...

Well illustrated, with detailed steps for all the recipes. Fun. And delicious.

Cook Korean! is the jolt-cola of Korean cookbooks.

Cookbooks, like pantry staples, become routine at times. Take for instance, the recent tread in cookbooks with vivid images accompanied by matter-of-fact recipes (e.g. Jerusalem, Ottolenghi, etc.). It’s now a tried and proven staple. It works, but it’s beginning to feel a bit predictable like that 10 minute hummus recipe from a can. Then comes along something new, like that hummus recipe from Michael Solomonov’s Zahav. You’re inspired and feel in control because someone has de-mystified something elusive. It’s a shot of passion. Cook Korean! is the jolt-cola of Korean cookbooks. Recipes are neatly sequenced into two pages brimming with original illustrations by the talented author, Robin Ha. Imagine: Persepolis meets a photo-sequenced Japanese-instruction-cookbook. Pockets of text accompany fun illustrations without over-indulging. Be inspired by child-like simplicity explaining foreign concepts to adults. And ingratiate yourself in restaurant-like Korean food at home. Why have others not done this? We are visual learners after all. Then again why have others not explained hummus like Zahav? Be sure to make extra space in your book shelves for Cook Korean. Only predicament is where it belongs? With the comics or with cookbooks?

Unique and Awesome

Yes, you read right this truly is a comic book and yes, it does contain recipes. Good, authentic, easy to understand recipes. There is a nice variety of dishes to choose from including, some near and dear to me: Kimchi and pickles. The Korean’s have it down with fermented vegetables supporting digestion and this book gives you a nice, easy to prepare selection. Being unfamiliar with cooking Korean, I was pleasantly surprised that the food was so delicious. This book covers vegetable side dishes, meat and poultry, seafood, soups and stews (my favorite), porridges, how to make fresh noodles and rice cakes, snacks, cocktails and oh yes, street food. It shows you how to marinade and grill, how to make seaweed salad... yum, and so much more I was not expecting. I highly recommend this book for not only it’s unique approach to cooking Korean, but the delicious and nutritious I might add, treasures it holds inside. I received this book from 10 speed press and it in no way altered my opinion.

Cook Korean!: When East Truly Meets West

It is a delight to see a cartoonist tackle cooking and laying out recipes in such a fun and engaging format. This fusion of a comic book/cook book is so right up my alley it’s not even funny, especially the Art work and nuggets of Korean language and cultural information contained in this book. Knowing that this was going to be in comic form having previewed it online, it truly piqued my interest. I have been looking forward to receiving this and I can say it’s everything I expected it to be. I happen to be a comic book collector (Betty & Veronica Double Digest) since the early 90’s. I have the very first issue all the way to the 100th, but I stopped buying them when the digest got much thinner and the story lines got weirder as it adapted to the times. Learning about languages and other cultures have always been an innate passion of mine so I appreciate Cook Korean! by Robin Ha in this regard. It teaches you what the recipe is called in Korean under the English titles which would really come in handy should one decide to go to a Korean Barbecue, plus it's always a great idea to broaden one’s horizons. I wish it had a phonetic equivalent underneath for proper pronunciation but I realized it’s already almost phonetic as it is written. I wanted to see something like this- Bulgogi (pul-goh-gih) not bull-go-guy. Some people just have to remember the vowel “I” is always to be pronounced as a short “I” sound (as in "ih") and this is common in most Oriental languages. Dengki, the character who teaches the recipes, reminds me of myself apart from the traditional Korean garb she’s wearing. I probably sound a bit narcissistic but I assure you, that’s not the case. Oftentimes, I do my hair in a braid so it’s like seeing a semblance of myself in comic form. I learned a few basic Korean phrases but never got to learn about food except for Soju and Kimchi, and speaking of Kimchi, the first chapter is dedicated to making it with various flavors, although I must say I am a bit discouraged to make an attempt because of the fermentation process which takes 1-2 days, maybe even longer. I tend to be a little impatient when it comes to food prep time. I like recipes that don’t take days to make so I skimmed through and found four that I can see myself trying in the immediate future. I skipped the part on how to make Bap (cooked rice) because I already have my own rice cooking technique without burning the bottom. It may not be cooked Korean style but rice is rice. I am looking forward to try Jeyuk Dupbap (Spicy Pork over Rice) and guess what? The cook time is only 30 minutes and I can make variations by simply substituting the pork with other kinds of meat as the recipe suggests. Then there’s Dakbokkeumtang (Chile Chicken Stew) which cooks in 45 minutes. I love spicy food. I wouldn't be full-fledged Asian if I didn't (j/k). Jogi Gui (Pan Fried Yellow Croaker) takes only 15 minutes to make so this will probably be the first one to try. This book happens to have a cocktail recipe with Yakult as an ingredient. I haven’t had one of those since my childhood (in Asia) so having that would be quite nostalgic for me. There are ten chapters of various Korean recipes ranging from Side Dishes, Meats, Seafood, Soups, Street food and foreign influenced dishes to mention a few. This also gives glimpses of Korean customs on Social drinking but I especially enjoyed reading the author’s life story in a nutshell, the short and sweet comic intros and life reminiscences she incorporated into every food category and who knew Korea happens to be the third largest consumer of Spam in the world? For a people mostly slim, they don’t seem to exhibit signs of intaking too much Sodium although most of their dietary staples are vegetable based and muy picante, so that must be the reason they stay slim (aside from being built that way. What a lucky bunch!) I don’t know why cookbooks like this aren’t in much circulation because I can definitely see myself as an avid collector. This would make a fun "just because" gift for the foodie with a curious palate for exotic flavors and enjoyable to read maybe even for children and kids at heart alike. [This is my unadulterated review for a complimentary copy of the aforementioned book which I received from Blogging for Books ]

A happy discovery

I discovered this book when I spotted it in a display at my library. I've tried some Korean recipes I found online (there are many wonderful sites), but something about the simple instructions and clear illustrations in Cook Korean! works really well for me. There is a natural flow to the recipes that matches my cooking style. Plus the drawings are a lot of fun, as is all the cultural information. Many of these recipes have become my favorite versions of different dishes, and I had to get a copy before I spilled something on the one from the library.

I love this book

I love this book! It's so straightforward! The illustrations are really helpful and lovely and the overall way the book is put together makes it a very comforting way to get into cooking a style of food I've never tried before. I especially like her explanations of what the different ingredients are and what substitutions she's made to make it easier to find all the necessary ingredients in the states. I've made four of the recipes so far and I plan to make more of them this week because she's made it so easy to follow along. I haven't gotten daring enough to try the seafood yet, but I'm confident that everything will be tasty. If nothing else, if you're the kind of person who just looks at cookbooks for the pictures, I don't think I could recommend this book enough, Ha's illustrations are delightful and you can learn quite a bit about Korean culture and how the ingredients come together without ever doing any cooking. This is the best cookbook I've ever bought, and I really think all cookbooks would benefit from illustrations like Ha's. They were a couple of points were I wouldn't have understood what to do (not because the explanation was poor, but I'm a self-taught cook) and her illustrations made it perfectly clear. P.S. I've never felt hungry looking at a drawing before, but her food just looks so delicious!

A Comic Book - What a Clever Idea!

A comic cookbook - what a clever idea. This should certainly appeal to younger cooks. Robin Ha has created a charming alter ego, Dengki, who will walk one through the recipes in the book. Dengki is opinionated, which adds to our delight. There are also some characters who express themselves in amusing ways while eating various items: "yum", "GoGoGo", "Woohoo". Pots, too, have descriptors such as "all its stinky goodness". In addition, the discussion of some Korean traditions and foods make for an interesting read. From the cook's viewpoint, the pages present a visual overload and require focused attention. Most helpful, the ingredient lists are surrounded by a black border, allowing them to be easily found among the drawings. Purchasing the ingredients can be frustrating. Acorn starch is purchased for thirty cents in a store in the book; on Amazon it sells four over $9 plus shipping for eight ounces. Where else might be a good, reasonable place to look? A source list would be a great addition to the book. Ha states the ingredients can be found on the internet, but we all know what that means: hours spent looking and wondering if the source is reputable. Korean grocery stores are not that common. My Asian grocer was able to guide me to use Japanese wakame for Korean miyeok and dashi kombu for dashima, saving me time and money from ordering on the internet. Do not expect to find Korean ingredients in every Asian market. I have four Asian markets in my Colorado college town, but they carry almost no Korean goods. The recipes are interesting, and most carry chili pepper heat. Not surprising, there are four recipes for kimchi. In two other recipes, Ha soaks her beef in water before cooking. Why? I made the Pine Nut Porridge. It is good, but it is a lot of messing around when one can make instant farina topped with pine nuts for a faster, similar dish. Steamed Asian Eggplant is very good, and the Soy Sesame Mayonnaise is nice for something different. I do recommend this cookbook as an interesting, fun read. This book was provided to me by Blogging for Books in return for my unbiased opinions.

Great comic book that features Korean food culture and easy to make recipes

When I first previewed this print version of this comic book. I was excited to see what is inside and read through the first few pages - I was learning more about background of the author, her heritage, ingredients and the how to make Korean food. I thought it was going to be hard, but to my amazement and tried few recipes. It was really easy. Since I also have some Asian ingredients in my fridge and just had to buy some Korean pantry items or make substitutions. The recipes are easy to follow. As for the comic book, it was very entertaining, easy to follow and the illustrations were cool too. I highly recommend anyone who is interested cooking Korean food especially to children, teenagers and adults alike. This is a comic book worth reading, be entertained and trying out new recipes

Authentic flavors, easy to learn

Great cartoons and easy to follow. We have made 9 recipes from this in the last month, all were really good with tons of umami deliciousness. In the photo are short ribs and home-made kimchi. Super authentic, tastes just like the restaurants I’ve been to in Seoul. Note, nobody in my family are Korean so I would say this cookbook successfully teaches dishes without needing much background knowledge. We found all the ingredients at a pan-Asian grocery store.

I love the combination of comics and recipes

Cook Korean! A Comic Book with Recipes by Robin Ha is a cool concept for a book, incorporating both comics and recipes. It’s essentially a graphic novel that teaches you how to cook various Korean dishes. The drawings are extremely cute, and the book is fun to look at. I’m sure it will make readers excited about cooking! The book is sectioned into ten chapters, giving the reader a nice variety of meal options: Kimchi and Pickles, Vegetables and Side Dishes, Meat and Poultry, Seafood, Soups and Stews, Porridges, Noodles and Rice Cakes, Snacks and Street Food, Cocktails and Anju, and Korean Fusion. Some of my favorite recipes to read included Soy Spinach, Sweet Pumpkin Porridge, and Rice Cake Soup. Ha put a lot of detail into both her drawings and cooking directions. It’s a really neat book. *I received this book for review*

A really fun and helpful cookbook!

I have a confession to make: I've always wanted to learn how to make Korean dishes. But it always seemed so complicated and, well, pretty intimidating...until I read Cook Korean! by Robin Ha. The super-talented Robin peppers her book with fun, quirky, and colorful illustrations for every step of every recipe. And what a wonderful collection of recipes, from Bulgogi Dupbap and Miyeok Naengchae, to Danpatjuk to Mulnaengmyun! I can now prepare all these dishes (even though I may not be able to pronounce them) with total ease and confidence. If you've always wanted to try making some healthy and exotic Korean dishes, this is the ultimate cookbook to help you do just that! *I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.

A great first Korean cookbook to start with.

This is the first Korean cookbook that I have. It is not only a cookbook but a comic book with illustrations. It is enjoyable and funny to read. It takes the intimidation out of Korean cooking. The book describes all the scary ingredients that are so foreign. It seems simple enough for young and old. I have not tried any recipes yet but I will repost the ones and give reviews as well. I was given this cookbook by blogging for books in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This book is brilliant. I knew nothing about cooking Korean food when I bought this book, but the graphic-novel-like visuals and pace--as well as the easy-going, easy-to-understand instructions--should set the standard for 21st-century cookbooks. It's easily the best cookbook I've ever used (and I've used a lot), particularly when it comes to introducing someone to a new cuisine. Unless you don't like Korean food or already cook like a pro, this is probably the best cookbook you'll ever buy.

Cute comprehensive cookbook

Living in Korea I often eat whatever is placed in front of me without much thought of how it was prepared. I know that Korean cooking is notoriously tricky because of the so-called "son mat" or hand taste method of cooking; tasting as you go along rather than precisely measuring ingredients. I really enjoyed this book as it demystified a lot of the processes and made Korean cooking seem fun and accessible.

ROCKSTAR OF THE COOKBOOK WORLD!

I AM IN LOVE! This book is such a unique creation -- comic meets cookbook and out comes a fantastical journey into an amazing cuisine. I met the author at a book fair and purchased a book there. My young boys are just in love with everything about this book -- they love that the recipes dont look intimidating but rather fun! The design really makes this book a must have!

This book was fun to read

I received this as a birthday gift from my sister. I am a complete novice at cooking, and can greatly relate to the author and her desire to start cooking later in life. This book was fun to read, easy to understand, and motivated me to try Korean cooking. I also love the comic format, as it makes for a much more interesting read than a traditional cookbook. Because of that, I actually read everything and learned a lot of tips. The print, color and paper quality is also great. Highly recommended!

Loved this book!

The recipes were super simple and approachable, and felt authentic without trying too hard. I thought the comics would be weird or confusing, but the drawings made the book really easy to follow and I could see families even using this book. I recommended it to a Korean friend who doesn't cook much but loves comics, and she loved it too! We tried a few entrees and some of the banchan (veggie/salad) recipes, and they easily doubled in size to make plenty of leftovers for the week. The recipes were also easy to customize a little, and had suggestions for alternate ingredients, which I liked because I cook depending on what I have at home. I'm so glad to have a solid, simple, approachable Korean cookbook, and loved the author's introductions and explanations. The comic book style works super well! Love this book and look forward to cooking from it more often.
