Ed Gordon
An award-winning journalist envisions the future of leadership, excellence, and prosperity in Black America with this "urgent and pathbreaking" work (Marc Lamont Hill).

Hard-hitting, thought-provoking, and inspiring, Conversations in Black offers sage wisdom for navigating race in a radically divisive America, and, with help from his mighty team of black intelligentsia, veteran journalist Ed Gordon creates hope and a timeless new narrative on what the future of black leadership should look like and how we can get there.

In Conversations in Black, Gordon brings together some of the most prominent voices in black America today, including Stacey Abrams, Harry Belafonte, Charlamagne tha God, Michael Eric Dyson, Alicia Garza, Jemele Hill, Iyanla VanZant, Eric Holder, Killer Mike, Angela Rye, Al Sharpton, T.I., Maxine Waters, and so many more to answer questions about vital topics affecting our nation today, such as:
  • Will the black vote control the 2020 election?
  • Do black lives really matter?
  • After the Obama presidency, are black people better off?
  • Are stereotypical images of people of color changing in Hollywood?
  • How is "Black Girl Magic" changing the face of black America?
Bombarded with media, music, and social media messages that enforce stereotypes of people of color, Gordon sets out to dispel what black power and black excellence really look like today and offers a way forward in a new age of black prosperity and pride.

"Real" Conversations we must have as a community

Wow, this book is amazing. Our black leaders, influencers and celebrities came together to discuss honest and some heavy topics that we need to discuss as a community. Many different perspectives which provokes deep thoughts and really does spark interest to take action in our community. This book is a MUST purchase and read!

We're 1

I am currently still reading the book. However I must say as a white woman growing gratefully in a predominately black are and school I was also not afforded the same opportunities as the "wealthy" "caucasian" middle class I can not stand to be categorized with "White America" I'm simply american struggling as best with the rest but I admire the inspiration as I try to do everyday knowing how hard it is out there. Much Respect✌

An overdue conversation on the state of Black America WITH solutions!

For decades there have been seminars, workshops, meetings and conventions on how to handle the issues of our race. While there has been some progress, there have been more discussions than action plans. This book is your action plan. The beauty of it is that it's not one voice. It's a joint conversation from many notable voices in the community with unique takes, ideas and solutions. This is not at all like an election voting slate with names assigned for you to check off. This is the book that sparks thought and provokes action. A must read!

Very thought provoking and well written

This book opens in an unexpectedly light way and pulls you in instantly. Ed Gordon has a way with words and asks all the poignant questions that we as African-Americans should be asking ourselves and more importantly acting on. The insights of his rountable are as much contradictive at times as they are thought provoking. It's interesting to hear the various perspectives and experiences from well known names in industries ranging from music, to politics, to activism, lawyers, entertainment and authors. Its thought provoking to say the least. I'd purchase it again.

Necessary Conversations for Today

The members of Turning Pages Book Club, felt this book, although written 2 years ago, that it is relevant today! This is a must read for everyone, across generations and all people. The voices heard in this book are multi-generation, therefore there is history, both past and present with issues of Racism, that has plagued African American/Black people since our forefathers were brought to this country as slaves and those who were already here. It felt good to know that the younger generation are in the fight against racism, to make substantial political and legal changes to a system developed ob racism. This book tackles many of the questions that have been discussed for years and still remain unanswered. But, with social media these hidden racist acts are being revealed to the public and the youth today are protesting , but they are not settling for the same old answers, or things being swept under the rug, they are demanding answers. A quote from Fannie Lou Hammer, .."They are sick and tired of being sick and tired"! So definitely, read this book , "Stay Woke and Vote"!

Right Out Of The Mainstream Media

I'm half way through the book and it's just more of the mainstream media's indoctrination. I'm surprised that people who are so well known and in power are so uninformed. I was hoping to get a sense of what the black community needs and their problems defined and solutions suggested. The same old line about how Republicans are white supremist and Trump was a racist. If they did their homework they would understand that the black community is being used by those who want a different country and hate our constitution as it gets in their way. Not once do they give an example of how Trump was racists or homophobic, etc. Just regurgitating what the mainstream media has said. The mainstream media draws conclusions for the public instead of giving the public the facts and letting the readers draw their own conclusions. The black community will be worse off with socialism/communism not better off. From what I've read, the black community has a lot of problems that the white community can't help them with or fix. Some of those problems are single mothers raising children without a father, black on black crime, unsafe neighborhoods, bad schools, black prejudices and self-segregation ... if the black community was to have better they have to be better. Demand safe communities and then better schools. You can't have good schools without safe neighborhoods. What teacher will go to an unsafe neighborhood. To do this the black residents have to come together. White people want to help and have been trying to do so since the civil war but blacks are worse off than ever before. The black community has to take a good hard look at why that is so and do something about it themselves. To keep blaming white people isn't working and is very decisive.

Be Informed and Learn

It is a great read. The book represents the excellent reporting we have come to expect from Ed Gordon. All the News channels could use an Ed Gordon now instead of all the opinion news that is simply unbearable.

Great book with inspiring insight

This book was primed to have some quality insight on a multitude of ideas. The good part is that it actually followed through on holding inspiring conversation throughout the entire book. I would recommend it to anyone looking to understand Black culture, thought, and experiences. Great book from start to finish.

Black History Month Reading

This was a good conversation on Black American issues. It was very good and everyone’s opinion and facts were well worth reading about.I liked the questions that were asked and how they were answered. Learned ampm ample amount of information.

This is a must read.

I highly recommend this book. It offers some really interesting perspectives...and a deeper look into the situations and politics that affect black lives.

Must read for all high school and college students.

Fantastic book. I gave it to my children as Christmas Gifts. I read it before. Must read for all high school and college students.

Incredible perspectives from different walks of life

The book portays history and other people perspective which makes you more conscious about your own. Very thoughtful and insightful read.

Conversation Must Have

Enjoy learning new perspectives and validating my own. Though provoking conversations that make total sense.

Good overview

It introduced and discussed many issues and concepts that, as a non-black american, i have not known. The biggest gripe i have is that would wish it would go more in-depth with certain subjects. However, the intent may have been to introduce issues and have a reader do more research on their own.

Must read!

I think this book was amazing. I felt like these are conversations we should all be having regularly AND THEN putting some action behind the conversation. And all races, colors, creeds should read it to see and maybe even better understand our struggles as a race.
