Complete German: A Teach Yourself Program (Teach Yourself Language)

I was extremely disappointed when I started to flip through this book. It's essentially a miniature version of a standard German textbook. I was excited to receive it because I had purchased this publisher's teach yourself Norwegian and I LOVED the formatting because it wasnt the same old thing that you find in literally every single college textbook about foreign language. It felt fresh. This one? Not so much. The gaudy colors and overabundance of the pictures, the excessive amounts of exercises, and the lack of breaking the information down into manageable chunks of information are a bit of a letdown. It's all about perspective, I know. If you're just getting into German, this will probably be a useful resource, but for someone who already has a university textbook on the subject, save your money. You already have pretty much the same thing. It comes with a CD, which is the same thing as what you can download for free through their app. I'm being generous with my rating because I know this book will help some people.

The Complete German book was very informative and thorough, just as every other teach yourself book I bought. The dialogues are engaging and the online audio is a big help to comprehend spoken German. I love the overall setup of this book and would highly recommend it to anyone wanted to learn German whom has little time to study for large portions every week. Just 10 minutes a day makes a big difference!

My fiance's parents only speak German and Bosnian, and I only speak English so I needed to find a way to learn German without begging my partner to teach me. When I received this book, I was happily surprised with how easy it was to start learning.

This is a very good book. The quality of the material is excellent and the audio recordings as well. However, although it covers content from B1 and B2 it is VERY SUPERFICIAL. A exemple: It only talk about Nebensätze (subordinate clauses) on the last 2 chapters while this is an topic for A2 level. Not to mention that it is limited to the use of "dass...". No "deshalb", "trotzden", "damit", "dafür", etc... So, if you are a newcomer and has no purposes such as proficiency exams etc... This book will be great for you. You will be able to read and understand a lot of things. If you're expecting in depth grammar you will be disappointed but I find the conversation easy to follow and I find that I do remember most of what I listen to but then I'm also a language freak so perhaps the best way to figure out if you like this is to just try it!

I didn't know a word in German, today I have quite a solid basis to go further into the language. I didn't know "Teach Yourself" either, I had never heard of it, but while making a research I found some good reviews on it on websites talking about self-learning methods. So, I got myself this pack and I completely fell in love with it! I loved to see how I was making progress day after day. Sometimes I found its pace a little too fast, but it's not a problem at all. There's good balance between listening, reading, grammar, exercises and so on...! And everything seems so well thought, it's very precise! But, I do think this course is just a beginning, one has to get immerse in the language learning process, and find other sources to practice what you learn and to learn more in different ways. But I am sure: Teach Yourself is a great beginning! Now I am anxious to learning French, Italian and Russian! See you Teach Yourself in a near future! Thanks! ;)

I brought this book to help teach my partner German, and so far so good! It is well written, with a steady pace. You definitely need to use the cd, although you can download the files to your phone, mp3 player etc. I am really happy with this paclage and would recommend it to others trying to learn German.

Excellent guide for learning German!

I have recently bought this book and CD in order to learn German from scratch. It is well laid out and easy to follow so will, hopefully help me to be able speak German! It begins with easy concepts and then adds to them in a logical fashion and leans more towards learning to speak the language as opposed to being bogged down by Grammar etc.

Seems good but failed with the word "complete". To learn German one needs to buy at the same time books on motivation and achieving targets. Will perhaps have another go when a trip to German-speaking countries inevitable or my Austrian wife has another go at me.....

Smaller than I expected

I wish I could compare this book to the pre-2010 editions, but this is my first time using Teach Yourself. From what I've seen on other polyglots' videos, the German Teach Yourself books have gone through some major facelift in 2010, and the 2013 edition has inherited the paper quality, colors and pictures. Personally, those are no more than frills - all these pictures take up space and add nothing to the content. However, by comparing to a video review I saw from the 2010 edition, I could see that they removed the full-page pictures, which is a "step back in the right direction", and either added content to those pages (tips about the culture) or, less likely, just reorganized the content. I'm looking forward for other opinions on this, as I don't have another edition at hand. Now, Amazon advertises it as if it came with two Audio CDs, but it comes in fact with a single MP3 CD. Not a problem at all in my opinion, but it should be advertised accordingly - the box comes with the correct information. Regarding the method itself, I like it so far. It doesn't try to take you by the hand and explain everything, and you often come across phrases that aren't explained in the book, but that you can infer meaning. So far, I can easily recommend this. I just wish they got rid of all the useless pictures.

I've obtained a package with only one CD (despite of promised 2 CDs in "Complete German with TWO Audio CDs" At a first glance this self-study package seems to be a good choice to overcome difficulties with German.

First off, ignore all the negative reviews. Second, get ready to put in the work in learning a new language. Third, this books comes with both written and audio components for the money, which is absolutely important if you want to be able to speak a new language. And finally, buy this book and save yourself a lot of money. It is only $30 and you will become highly proficient in German in about 3-4 months if you diligently study this book. Here are some very important tips to study the German language through this book: In the introduction chapter the authors recommend studying the book/audio files for only 30 minutes per day. This is an absolutely important advice that you must adhere to. Don't try to binge study a new language in a few nights. This is not like watching your favorite show on Netflix on binge mode. If you try binge studying you will struggle. I'd suggest you study no more than one chapter every two days. There is a total of 23 chapters. I'd also highly encourage you to go back and re-read and re-listen to the audio files approximately every seven chapters. This will really help you retain works and the context of sentences of the new language. Listen to the audio files at least three times every two days for that one chapter that you are studying. The last piece of very important advice would be start making German part of your life as much as possible as advised by the authors. Add a German keyboard on your smartphone. Read German newspapers or books online as much as you can. Remember studying a new language is not a destination for a person new to the language. It is a journey, so treat it like one and you will succeed.

The only reason I'm giving it such a bad grade is because the kindle edition does not come with the audio files in any form, although that is not mentioned in the product page (or, alt least, wasn't when I bought it). I contacted the Publisher and they said I'd have to buy the CD separatedly. In short, I felt that I was being ripped off. The CD (or audio files, or wharever) are advetised as part of the book (and again, there is no mention that the kindle edition does not contain them) is part of the product, and I didn't receive them.

I know a lot of people complained about all the pics and glossy pages in this course but hey, I am a frills kinda gal and it actually made the course more appealing to me. They really need to update the description as there is only one CD with the course. They put all the content on one CD and instead of writing a new description, they just copied and pasted it from the old course page. So don't fret, same course, 2 CD content on ONE CD; you are not being cheated, Amazon web manager just got lazy. But then again, he may not have realized it. Either way, I think the course is worth getting....as well as the other books to: Essential German Grammar, the vocabulary book, how to improve your German, etc. Just get it all! LOL!

It's the perfect book for those who want to learn german. The quality paper, the pictures and explanations are excellent. I totally recommend it.

I'm very dissapointed to find the Audio and Video is not supported in this Kindle version! Even though it CLEARLY tells us the book has both. It doesn't. Probably worth 5 stars if it actually worked. The single star is really reflection on Amazon for lying in the book's description.

I have tried books from Teach Yourself in the past and have not been impressed but I thought I’d give it another chance. I was not disappointed! I learnt so much German from this book I could not believe it. Unlike many other language textbooks which start with things such as “at the airport” or “your passport please”, this book begins with introducing yourself and basic conversation. I also found all the culture tips very interesting. The audio was very helpful in pronunciation and you can also get the audio for free on the Teach Yourself website. Finally, the quality of this book is far superior to other teach yourself books. The pages are thick and in full colour and the spine is nice and sturdy and the layout is simple and easy to understand. It has been a pleasure to use and I would recommend this for anybody studying German.

The book is really good. However, I got confused with the audio recordings. The playlist does not match up to the ones in the book. The first audio file is an introduction to the book. From the second audio file onwards, the ones listed in the book are always one ahead, i.e. book audio file 1 is audio file 2 on the cd, book audio file 2 is audio file 3 on the cd, etc. If you can remember this you should be able to keep up with the audio files. It took me a while to realise what was going on.

I ordered this as birthday present and whilst the book itself is very good and you can download audio content, there were no CDs with it. The photograph on Amazon website showed a package with CDs and the description said that it included CDS. I did not want to send the shipment back as had no time to get a replacement and cannot see how to contact the seller to get this rectified. Without the CDs the selling price is very poor value for money for just a book. I am very disappointed and the information was very misleading.

Fantastic way to learn a language, I am in general a fan of the style of Teach Yourself. I am a language graduate who wishes to add German to my arsenal but I do not have the time to take classes outside of work. So, I decided to buy this having previous experience of Teach Yourself and I believe it has helped me make some progress from zero German to at least being able to have some basic conversations. The CD is very easily transferable to my iPod so I can listen to it on the go. You certainly need the CD along with the book to help you with pronunciation.

This is a clear, straightforward introduction to the sort of German you would need for a holiday or a short visit, and the CD is excellent, but it's really not much more than a glorified phrase book, giving extended practice of the sorts of basic German needed in everyday situations, and the claim to be presenting a brand new 'discovery' approach to German grammar is an insult to the generations of teachers who have been getting their students to explore the language in similar ways. The style - especially the illustrations - looks as though it's designed to appeal to teenagers rather than adults. I bought this book and CD because I was so impressed with Rupert Snell's Complete Hindi in the same Teach Yourself series, but different books in the series clearly take different approaches. However, if you want something that equips you with the means to learn and practice good basic German (including practising with the CD in the car, the kitchen or anywhere else!) I would certainly recommend this.

I find this textbook extremely impressive. It is well thought out, realistic in its ambitions, and simply appropriate for anyone trying to get to grips with German. I have used it exclusively in the Kindle version for iPad. Having the audio immediately available is wonderful. A pity the real Kindle can’t do It! On a real Kindle the video resolution is often unsatisfactory too.

Really wished I read the reviews before purchasing for kindle. There is no access to the audio despite the Amazon description. The first few pages of the book express how important listening is so its very disappointing.

I love this book, I just have to keep dedicated to learning the language! The book is rather pleasant and a great start for any enthusiast or lover of the language, and I feel it would be great for tourists, as well as hobbyists or even those who wish to learn the language for business endeavors. As for myself, a student, I feel that it is very easy to understand and learn from this book and I have recommended it to others since purchasing it.

This could be a really good course, but unfortunately the CD-rom really lets it down, as there is no correlation between the order of exercises and dialogues as presented in the book and the equivalent audio extracts on the CD, so it's incredibly confusing and almost impossible to use, as one is searching in vain for the relevant audio clips. Disappointing. I have had to order another course...

Product in perfect condition, no marks or writing on the accompanying book, which is great. I haven't used it yet, but I am looking forward to doing so.

I found this book and CD excellent although I am only 4 units into it. Instructions are very clear and easy to understand, with the German alongside English. Although there are many units, they are short, so I tend to do one every day or every other day for about 20 minutes. Each unit has a test yourself section at the end for consolidation. What I also like is that you are introduced to new vocab and grammar and then given exercises to help implement it. And just when you're feeling confused or unsure, things are explained in depth. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn German and knows absolutely nothing, like me! I have already learned quite a bit. The only criticism I would have is that there is not much space to write in it but this is not much of a problem as I also use a separate notebook. The book itself is quite small and lightweight so it's easy to carry around. The exercises are practical and interesting. This book is definitely not boring and keeps you engaged throughout. Very pleased with this buy and hopefully I will be able to speak German soon!

As a senior citizen learning a new language is challenging. This book is great but regretfully my dedication to the task is lacking. Well set out sections and I'm sure if I apply myself to it I will get there. If I don't it will be my failure and not this excellent publication.

I have been buying a few German language books and CD but so far it is the best I have ever come across. It shows me the importance of grammar and pronunciation in this wonderful language. As a beginner, it is always important as a first step to learn how to greet people and count the numbers. This books gives you exactly what I expected.

Easy to follow, progression is gradual which is just what my students need. I also like the Listening exercises; they are just long enough to hold the students' attention .I can definitely recommend this book. Ute

The book in itself is a very good read, easy to follow and digest. However the Kindle version does not support the audio, contrary to what Amazon portrays in the e-book description. 3 stars as it is only half the product advertised, would be 5 star if the audio worked.

I prefer the BBC language course and the layout of the course book, I found the CD on this course does not give enough time to repeat what you are listening too, have to keep rewinding

The pace of this was a little odd. It starts out very easy, then gathers pace very quickly. Good for people wanting to revisit their german or as a supplement to other books.

I tried this on both an android device and windows 10 Kindle reader. The audio content did not work on either. Mind you it's only £4 so no great loss. Should be warnings on the sales though

it's got everything I need to brush up on and learn more of German, I would recommed It to anyone.

Just recently acquired this book and it seems pretty good, though I doubt it will really take me to B2 level, but I'll have to see . For complete beginners, it might be a little bit difficult from the start because there are lessons with full conversations (albeit basic ones) right from the start. There are two things that I really disliked in the book: First one, it doesn't leave enough space for answers. Even if I really cram up my words (as shown in the photo), it barely fits in the space they have left for me to write. Secondly, the audio (at least on the app) goes without pauses between sentences, so sometimes you have to go back a lot of times just so you can follow what is written in the book and what the audio is saying. Also, the app seems very clunky wich makes the chore to listen and relisten to the audio even more tiring.

El servicio fue rápido, el libro es en segunda mano, pero es perfecto y también el CD sin daños. La caja solo tiene uno daño menor. Las páginas no están escritas ni rotas. Lo recomiendo mucho este libro para aprender aleman!

I had bought one of the kindle versions of German language learning and the audio has never worked. I bought this book for kindle, and again the same problem. No audio. Not worth it.

When I first ordered this, it only came with one CD which would not play in multiple CD players. Amazon was really good at helping resolve this by sending out a replacement. However, the replacement didn't come with any CDs. The content in the book looks like it would be a good course but is not very useful without the accompanying CDs.

Best book from A1 to B2 and is small and light weighted which makes it easy to travel with and has everything you could ever imagine.

O livro é bom mas como os áudios não funcionam em todos os dispositivos é necessário acessar o site da editora pra ouvi-los, além de não pausar automaticamente de forma alguma, o que torna o estudo complicado.

The book is amazing. The way German is taught in the book is very easy to understand and fun to practice. Graphics make the book very interesting and fun to read. However, that CD (which is NOT provided with the book) is dearly missed. Certain exercises require the CD to be present which is unfortunately not the case. But still 90% of the book is still managable without it. So if you are new to German and are thinking of learning it, i say go for it. You will not regret your decision.

Better you start studying using the Teach Yourself Series. I attended Goethe Institut for learning German, bu studying from here is much more suited to me.

Not happy at all I needed this book for a course no where did it say the CD's that are to accompany the book were not included and after inquiries to the supplier I can't buy them separately we have had to use the book as is for the course which has made it that much harder to learn not having the audio companion that is needed

you need an android app with it to complete your learning and the android app is around 1000 rupees, so I think that is the hidden charge here. If you are willing to buy the app then this book is of great help.

Very good book for studying German, it is not without some flaws , but here it's my personal opinion due to the way I'm used to study a language , and some translations in it I would have done differently... Otherwise , fantastic book and I recommend it.

Das Buch vermittelt schnell und unkompliziert Sprechfertigkeiten und Sprachverständnis, ohne allzusehr ins Detail abzuschweifen. Anstatt vier oder mehr Bücher eines andern Lehrwerks kaufen zu müssen, kommt man hier mit einem Buch bis von A1 bis B1!

Good, nice content but i didn't get the Audio CD, without audio it is useless i fell for beginners..

Disclaimer : This Book/CD edition isn't for Novice learners. You need to at least have a basic understanding of the German language before you embark a tour of it. Coming to the book, The content is great, easily the best book available to learn German. You won't get to see such a simpler explanation even on books from Goethe. But but,there are no color pages and the paper quality is not that great. You only get a single CD as against two if you were to buy a book published by McGraw Hill. And Amazon & U-shop does what they usually does, they keep on alternating the price between 550-900 as per their wish which is pretty ridiculous. Moreover you won't get the prescribed book as mentioned which is of 408 or 416 pages, instead you will get the one with 389 pages. Just what I required for learning English with a busy lifestyle

I purchased this having not spoken or studied German for 20 years - and that was for GCSEs. I found the course to be straight forward, informative, and concise. Compared to other language courses (I've had a go with a French one in the past), I would definitely recommend this for ease of learning.

I ended up with the MP3 CD ROM and the only place I can play it is in my car! Not ideal, as I can't read the book while driving. A friend and I were looking for a course we could do together, as we were both attempting to learn German using different apps/computer programs. The edition she has got is older and the new book has colour pictures and some different exercises. We have been using her CD because it works on any player, and the content of the CD seems to be the same. Be careful which version you buy! So far we have done two chapters and it definitely suits our way of learning with a combination of written and spoken exercises.

I've tried quite a few different language courses over the years and I was pleasantly surprised by this one. The book is quite compact, but it packs a lot into the colourful pages, with 23 chapters covering many different aspects of the language and situations you're likely to use it in. I particularly liked the fact that the 2 CDs had a huge 110 short tracks over them, which makes it very easy and not at all frustrating to repeat the tracks so that you can be sure of the punctuation. The style of teaching in the book is less dry than many others and I found the simple explanations given quite helpful when trying to understand the complexities of German grammar. Having a reasonable basic understanding of German, this book was more of a revision for me, but even so I'm a bit dubious that it would take anyone to to the claimed Level 4 understanding and conversation level without a serious amount of speaking, constant revision and further reading. I've bought 6 of the Teach Yourself German books - vocab, grammar, Perfect Your German etc, so we'll see how the whole package fits together and just how far it realistically takes me. So far, I've no regrets about the purchase.

I bought this back about a year ago as I was going to move to a German speaking country. Whilst I speak a few foreign languages, German is not something I have ever come across in my studies and so I had little to no idea about words, grammar, etc. Basically, I could count to ten. The book starts from the very basics and it uses a limited vocabulary all the way through. The words and experssions are repeatedly used so it's easier to memorize them. The grammar is explained in a way that it doesn't look complicated at all. The audio material is also fine. I finished the book over 6 months and I got to a stage where my grammar knowledge is sound and solid! It is true that this way, you can really only improve the passive knowledge, and speaking will remain an issue. However, now that I have moved and started an actual language course, it was a pleasant surprise that from no German background other than this book, they put me in the A2.2 course after having done the placement test. Means I skipped the first 3 levels and saved about 1000 euros. Pretty good I think! There are, however, some negatives: - practically no space to write in the book which means you either do the exercises in a notebook, or use mickey mouse size letters... - conjugation is a very important aspect of the grammar, and whilst it is logically explained in the book, it would be helpful to have a table somewhere at the end that summarizes all the cases, including definite and indefinite articles, and conjugation when none is present. I made myself a table and ended up referring to it all the time until the endings eventually stuck in my brain. - it would make sense to have more 'burning' type exercises. By this I mean more exercises that purely ask you to change one certain thing in a sentence. Like, put this is the perfective passive. Rewrite with this or that preposition using the dative case etc. The more of these boring exercises one completes, the easier the different grammatical challenges will stick in the brain. Overall, very happy with the purchase. -

Excellent book for beginner. If you read it (and listen to the CD) daily you should be comfortable at A1 level. Only one thing I noticed is that it does not mention about how to describe the floors in a multistoried building ( ex. in the 3rd floor - in der dritten Etage) , which is mentioned in the A1 book from Goethe Inst; umm but I am not sure, it is possible that I missed it. Anyway it describes lot of other situations which Goethe Inst book does not. Realy enjoyed reading this "Complete German ".

It gives the student all he needs to successfully express himself - go over the CD tracks several times and you will exude confidence at what you have achieved!

There is a problem with this book. One is expected to buy a couple of audio CDs also to practice German language with this book. But, the description of the book on the website does not clearly state this. Thus, a learner cannot fully use the book.

product does not look in brand new condition at all. the CDs had scratches, lucky enough the CDs worked else would have to go for refund and all those follow up process. In my review it was a thumbs down experience and I wont suggest it to any one.

This is an excellent tool for those who want to learn German independently. There are a lot of similar books on the market but this has the advantage of taking you past the basic stages of language learning (to B2) without the learner having to resort to expensive language schools! The explanations are clear and the material straightforward to use. What is particularly useful is the content is directed towards those who want to use German in practical situations. I would wholeheartedly recommend it! I am also looking forward to trying out Perfect Your German.

Book was very well written. The CD's would work on the computer however not on a CD player so was practically useless for myself.

arrived very quickly, erm it's okay but I am a complete beginner and only on 1st chapter and finding the pronunciation of words difficult as it doesn't repeat any words of break them down, I love the German language so I will definitely be perservering but wondering if I should of got German for dummies first to get a proper feel for the pronunciation.

I used this as a guide when doing german at university. It is very informative and helped me with my revision. I am unsure as to how well you could teach yourself solely with this book but it does contain a lot of information.

I got the book without CD's. First of all this book shouldn't be sold without the audio cd. The audio cd costs around ₹ 1000, but this information isn't clearly mentioned anywhere. Their Kindle edition with audio works only for iPhone & ipad. Instead you can buy their android app (complete german teach yourself)from play store which is much more interactive and useful.

German book is very easy ....to understand

The reading and the training is actually good and has an appealing flow to get deep inside a new difficult language as German. But.... nobody prevents us that we ought to buy the CDs on the side !!?? Yes, there is an application - on these times, it is actually far more confortable with an app on the phone. I was thankful about it! The app is easy to download, apparently free and we can even test first unit. But only THEN we realize the whole has to be PAYED FOR. Oral exercises, dialogues, all the listening of the learning course ... all of it. I mean, German has very complicated sounds to learn. And we are buying a teaching method, complete. How are we going to learn anything only with the book when 50% of the basis, the listening and oral, is not there ?? Yeah, paying for it. Again, we should have been advise of it before buying the book. It is our choice then to chose this or other books (which already have the oral included) Dissapointed.

A disappointing pack. One book, one cd (which doesn't play on my media player)!

My wife & I started taking German lessons at the beginning of this year. Our tutor recommended we bought Complete German Book/CD pack and a separate Complete German book, so that we both had a book. I therefore purchased both from Amazon. The book in the Book/CD pack is very inferior in quality of paper and has black & white, not colour illustrations, as in the separate book. Both have the same ISBN number and bear the same price: £12.99. The book with the CD pack is marked "for sale in the Indian Subcontinent only"!! Please advise why the quality is so different and why an Indian book has been sent.. I do not want a replacement as I am already using the inferior book to make my margin notes in - my wife does likewise in her better quality book. Please consider a refund for the poor quality book. I understand others in our group have the same problem and have/will be contacted you.

I bought the Kindle version. In the blurb it talks of CD's and there is nothing I can see that says you do not get an electronic copy of these CD's on your Kindle. No doubt there is something in the small print that says this but I can't see it. When you start to read the book, it says the CD's are important. So I've sent it back. What a waste of time.
