Not for ‘kids’ but girls/misleading & depressing

My son and I were totally disappointed! We randomly picked 4 stories and all were written by a girl & for a girl. And one of the stories was super depressing! Definitely not uplifting before bed, and totally unhelpful for my 11yo boy. He was pissed!

Way too traumatic for an innocent child...

I don't think this book is for pre-teens. Maybe pre-teens that have been through really traumatic situations. But definitely not my Son. The beginning of the section "Tough Stuff" mentioned being offered COCAINE. I couldn't believe that would be in a children's book. I think I'm going to try & pick stories to read with my 11 yo. This book could ruin a good innocent child's innocence, if you're not careful!!! We'll see...

Sad she does now

Buyer beware! had story about Sexual abuse that my grand daughter knew nothing about before reading. Sad she does now.

Many stories of death and illness; more than expected. Many good stories also.

Too many depressing events in the young children's lives in the book. Not as uplifting as I had hoped when buying this for my eleven year old granddaughter.

Couldn't have loved it more!

My daughter absolutely loved this book! It was a Christmas gift and to be completely honest we weren't sure how it would go over but she read it front to back and she's picked it up here and there to read Parts again since she finished it. She said she wishes that everyone in her class would read it to. There were definitely some parts that tug on the heartstrings, as is common with chicken soup books, but she highly recommends it to everyone and even took it all the way to the final bracket of a "Best Books" tournament in her school.

Great ideas for this age group

I only read a few stories out of this before I gave it to my 9 yr old granddaughter for her birthday. I loved them so much I wish I could've read them all. She loves to read and I hope that it will help her in her transition years.

Most stories were good..

The kid says: Most stories were good... Some were relatable... But some were depressing and sad. From the mouths of babes

& he really enjoyed the book

I bought this for my 10 year old grandson, & he really enjoyed the book. He even asked me to be sure to buy the next one in line - for the Teen Soul.

If you haven't yet, where have you been?? Lol

I have LOVED receiving and reading these books since I was a young lass. My last read being Soup for the Momma's Soul. So I decided to introduce them to my own daughter. They are just as helpful now. She read it for 2hrs this evening! No screen, just book!

Who doesn’t love Chicken Soup?

Wonderful book

My grandaughter couldn't put this book down until she was done. She has offered it to her best friend to read because she can't stop talking about it. It has helped her get through a move to another town that has upset her and put a distance between her and many of her friends from school.

My 12 year old daughter absolutely loves this book!

Great book for young people and their parents.

We just got this book and have been reading one story per day, right after dinner while we're still sitting at the table. The children love it and so do we. The real life stories are very inspiring and help the children focus the positive. Helps give them "can do" attitudes. Highly recommended for pre-teens.

I Just Finished Reading this at Age 67!

I enjoyed this book. But it did seem that the poignant stories outnumbered the lighthearted ones. At 67 I can certainly handle stories about illness and death. I am sure that there are many preteens who would find these stories to be heartwarming and instructive, in that so many of them stress the importance of treating our loves ones well while they're alive since we never know how long any of us have on this earth. As I think back to my preteen years, I read a lot of fluff. I can think of one story which I would have particularly enjoyed as a preteen--the one about the girl whose mom didn't want her to shave her legs. I had the same problem, so I would have enjoyed this story immensely. But if I'd been forced to read all the stories--maybe I would have been burned out by the tearjerker stories in this book. There are also many stories about young people who made a difference. These were inspirational. There are some very good lessons here for young people, especially those who might need a kick in the pants when it comes to being loving with their parents and grandparents before it's too late. But there might be some sensitive souls who would find all this angst to be too much at their tender ages. As far as me, at 67, it was an enlightening and beautiful experience to get inside the hearts of these young people. My daughter was surprised to hear that I was reading this particular chicken soup book. She wasn't sure that she understood why. I love young people and feel that we can all learn a lot from them.

Disturbing

This is not an appropriate book for 9-13. Introduces serious topics like drug abuse, attempted suicide, sexual abuse, ugly divorce situations, drunk driving and tragic deaths. On the surface and within the opening chapters, seems like positive messages but has too much info that feeds on drama seeking pre teens and ruins the innocence of those still enjoying childhood at a tender, susceptible, young age. Was horrified to see that a story encouraging women, highlighting pro life suffragist Susan B Anthony, was opened with a quote by Margaret Sanger. Those who authored this book didn't overlook the undeniable contrast in these women's beliefs. Be careful what you give your children. There are hidden agendas and wolves dressed in sheep's clothing.

Read This Amazing Book!!

Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul Authors: Jack Canfield Mark Victor Hansen Patty Hansen Irene Dunlap Age: 9-13 Rating: 4/5 stars There are 101 stories in this amazing book. The stories are about the changes that children go through when they are 9-13. Some of the stories are heartbreaking but they turn out to be great. The book has stories about people changing the things around them and helping other people they don't even know. In one of the stories a girl was reading a magazine called Humane Society News. She read a story about a dog that got shot in the line of duty. She wanted to help but didn't know how. When the idea came to her, she wanted buy bulletproof vests for all the dogs in police station in her community. When she found out one vest cost $475 that didn't stop her, she still helped and made a difference. If you would like to know the end of that story then you need to read the book. All the stories are true!!!!! By Yen

Thoughtful, hard edge realism

I purchased this Chicken Soup book for my eight year old son, although the book states 9-12. The younger version for kids seemed too "slight." And his teacher had read a few stories from this version, so we decided to buy it for him as an Xmas 2000 book. I have found it riveting, and many of the stories can bring tears to your eyes. The stories are concise. The writing is fluid and easy to understand. I was struck, however, by the intensity and hard edge realism of some of them. There is a section on death and a number of the other stories touch on grief, divorce, loss and death. My son just lost his grandmother in March (my mom) so I believe some of these tales will be helpful. They touched my own heart. Parents should be aware however that there is a heavy dose of despair--albeit overcome by strength and love. Also some nine year olds are more mature, wiser and perhaps less innocent than others. A nine year old from an otherwise happy, intact family who has yet to face a great deal of loss or grief may be taken a back, perhaps even a little frightened. This is a good work that should be reviewed first by a parent. Certainly consider the age prescribed. Also examine your own views on death, dying and marriage dissolution. These stories may helpfully support them, or they may not. As a consultant in the child and youth development field, I would be more likely to steer the 11-13 year old grappling with specific issues to this Chicken Soup.

This book speaks to me. I am 12 every preteen needs 1. My#1 fav book

Chicken soup for preteen soul is a great book. I have no regrets what so ever about getting this book. This book is a most have book. And if you have preteens like me then this is the book for them. And I'm 12, so I am a preteen. So this Aaron. And instill next Time when I make my daily Review, bey bey bey.

An AMAZING book for growing pre teens! A must read!

I have this book, and it is absolutly INCREDIBLE. The stories touched my heart and made me want to cry..It made me even sader to think these stories came from pre teens, just like me. I love this book because i can relate to it alot. This is an AMAZING book full of true, happy and some heart breaking stories from pre teens...If someone is 9, 10, 11, 12 or 13, this is a MUST read for them...It is nice to know that we are not alone in this world, that there is other kids going through the same things...I loved it alot..A must read!!!

Chicken slop

It's supposed to be uplifting as its chicken soup for the soul. This is dark and disturbing. My daughter is sensitive and extremely naive and innocent and I will do my best to keep her that way as I remember not being so naive and innocent because my own parents paid no attention to what I was exposed to. Forcing a boy to watch a deer die... What did that do for the soul besides create a traumatic event juicy enough to publish and line the purses of these 'authors'. I can see a dad taking his son out, killing a deer and being compassionate and helping him understand that God put these animals on the earth to nourish us and we pay thanks to the deer blah blah but that's not what happened. Drugs? My daughter doesn't even realize some kids are exposed to them daily, she thinks it's only something adults do. No thanks. I'll keep her spirit pure and true and never allow a wretched book put fear and pain and guilt into her heart.

This book was great

I was a preteen last year (i'm a teen now) and i read this book. It was so enjoyable i couldn't put it down and finished most of the book in just an hour! These stories made me think of whats really going on in the world. It made me apriciate everything i have more. It put me in someone else's shoes and made me think of what it would REALLY be like. These stories are very touching. This is a fantastic book for preteens and teens. I still have this book and read it often.....

Chicken Soup

I really enjoyed this book. It was a couple years younger then me, but it was still a really good book. I think this helps kids learn from the problems of other kids and cope with what their going through. Please, read this book and understand that your not the only kid going through something bad in your life. Hopefully, it will help you, like it did for me.

Good stories to read with your preteen.

It is sometimes hard to find things to do with your preteen. They are at an age when they want more independence from mom and dad. This book is a great connection - you can cozy up and read a few selections at a time - it's a great way to have fun, and spend time bonding with your preteen. You can then use the stories, or lessons learned for great conversation pieces for discussion.

It’s a really amazing! I don’t see the problem with this book! It good for a younger relative!

This book is amazing my 5th grade teacher would read us a few chapters of this book. While she read some of the chapters she cried cause she knew how being a pre teen was. It also made me cry cause a lot of people can relate once they are at there pre teen years. I’m hoping I can buy another for my brother he just started middle school!

really helpful!

My parents are divorced and reading about how other kids dealt with it really helped me get back on my feet even though they've been divorced for like four years. Reading about how other kids got out of bad situations made me feel lucky because now I know how much worse they have it opposed to me. I know it's hard to deal with these things at first but too many kids dwell on how it stinks to have divorced parents and they don't use this time to try to do something to help yourself or something. If you want to make a difference get off your butt and try to make that difference.

Great!!

When I read this book I really found a connection, because many things that happened in this book relates to my life story as well. There was a section about death and 2 years before I read this book my grandmother had died from diabetes. It was a struggle in my life, but when I read that section about death it was like that story was my story. There were sections on divorce, peer pressure, and loads of stories of teenagers who survived all this stuff. It was amazing because at the time I felt like I was the only one going through all that stuff. Some of the stories even made me cry. It really took a grudge off of my life.

Do NOT have sensitive children read this

Heard loud sobs last night only to find my 12 year old highly disturbed by reading a story about someone's sick cat being GASSED. I read the story and threw the book away. We're very lenient parents. We want our kids to be exposed to all reasonable growth opportunities. I was horrified when I read the story. I still can't understand what was inspirational or nurturing in that story. Be VERY careful in giving this to a child.

Birthday present

My ten year old daughter really loves this book. She is not very keen on reading, but will sit down and read the chicken soup books. She chose this book as one of her birthday presents!

Great for preteens that need to find out who they really are

This book is great!! The stories are about many different things like death and dieing etc. I love it and so does my sister, who is nine. Even if you are 8,7,13,14, etc. you will still love this book. I guess you could say that this book is for all ages.

Great!

I thought that the Chicken Soup company has certainily met all audiences now...including all kids in the middle. Even though this book is magnificent, I still think that the kid's soul is slightly better. I recommend both.

Bought this for my nine year old daughter.

My nine year old loves this book! she said it's one of her favorites! I'm going to order the second one in a few days!

chicken soup for the preteen soul

This book is horrible. I read one episode for my duaghter and it is about a father who forces his son to watch a dying deer as he eats venison. Then the kid finds a kitten and his mother makes his brother put the kitte to sleep. I was horrified. This is not realism. This is teaching your child cruelty. Do not give this book to a preteen until you read and vet it first.

A Perfect Book About Those Dreaded Preteen Years

This book has combined many stories on how to deal with love, friendship, and just life in general. Many of the stories are acual experiances from the people that tell them the best. This book has shown many people that acheiving is possible and that all you need is a little faith.

Five Stars

great

AWFUL

I heard so many fabulous and positive things about this series that I bought two for my 11 year old daughter for Christmas. BIG mistake. This book was NOT the uplifting, spiritual guide that I was led to believe. I had hoped that it would help solidify the values that my husband and I have taught her. The book traumatized and frightened her so much that she was having stomach and headaches and couldn't sleep at night. I couldn't get these two books out of my house fast enough!

Awesome

I would say to any parent/friend.grandparent if you have a child becoming a "preteen" they need this book. My daughter reads this book daily and finds the stories so real, she has found herself in the exact same spot as other "preteens" and that helps her understand a little better about life. I to as a parent enjoyed reading this book.

Simple excuses

First of all, this book is amazing and I see NO reason not to. For those people who bought this for a younger child are ridicoulous! Read the cover! Ages 9-13! There is a reason they do that! My daughter and I read this book and she is now inspired to make a difference in the world. If you know that a book talks about death then make sure your children are comfortable. Dont make them read it. Let them if they want to.

I love it!!!!!!!

I love this book. It has sad stories and happy ones. If you like reality books I would recommend Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul.

Fantastic inspiring book

My daughter and I read this book together, many of the stories are about children who have made a big difference in their society. It really is very inspiring.

the girls loved it!

This was a great Christmas hit for a 10 year old and a 13 year old girls. I look forward to buy the 13 year old the one for teens next christmas!

touching but ....

This book has a lot of touching stories. But after reading a while, I got fed up because most of the stories can be put into one formula: death + love.

Chicken Soup

I purchased this book as a Christmas gift for my 11 year old son. He loved it! He spent several days showing me things in the book that had really touched him or made him think.

school project

very goodb value had to buy for school summer reading program. my daughter even liked it and she hates to read.

scary ideas for some kids

My daughter (10 yrs old) got very worried by a story about a child's mom who was killed at the office by a bomb. She kept worrying about parents dying suddenly. This story was not at all "chicken soup for the soul."

Great book!

I grew up on these books. My daughter loves to read so I just knew she would love this book too. An addition to her collection.
