Dark, Inspiring and Highly Readable

I see no reason to write an overly detailed review of this book. Others have beaten me to the punch. So I'll give you a quick overview and then add my reasons for why I think many people need to read this, and why even those who don't might find it quite useful in their own lives. David Goggins is a retired Navy SEAL who is legendary for his determination, will-power and ability to edure pain. Now, before you throw up your hands, adopt an English accent, and exclaim, "Och, not another bloody book by a bloody SEAL!" let me assure you that CAN'T HURT ME is most definitely n o t like all the others you may have read. The Chris Kyles and Marcus Lattrells and what-not were telling war stories and to some extent, making extended commercials for their own branch of the military. Goggins is not. In fact, when it comes to his deployed-in-a-war-zone days, he doesn't write enough to fill out a paragraph, much less a page. He talks about his military training extensively, but only with the larger focus of the book in mind. Which is as follows. Goggins grew up in an abusive family. His dad was a physically and emotionally abusive hustler who treated him like a slave. He ended up living with his mom and taking comfort in food -- lots of food, so that he eventually became grossly and immensely fat. As one of the only blacks in an all-white school, he was also subjected to terrible racism. By the time he was in his late teens, early 20s, his life was a kind of morbid joke, with his job being to empty traps left in restaurants which were full of dead rats. He had no self-respect and no future. To compress a very complicated story into a few sentences, Goggins eventually came to the conclusion that he must stop seeking out the easy path in life, must "find comfort in being uncomfortable," and constantly seek to challenge himself in every aspect of life. This led him to the SEALs, whose training he had to go through several times due to injuries and illness -- a remarkable feat in itself given the mental and physical brutality of the training. Once a SEAL, however, Goggins continued to find ways to become uncomfortable by seeking out the toughest trainings he could sign up for, including the Rangers and the Delta Force, and by entering marathons and later, the masochistic enterprise known as the ultra-marathon. Eventually he competed in even more punishing activities such as trying to become the Guinness Book of World Records holder in the category of chin-ups (which sounds like my idea of hell.) But the thing which distinguishes him from everyone else is the fact that he did most of this with some severe congenital defects he didn't even know he had at the time. This discovery truly blew his mind and got him asking, "What if -- ?" He began to realize that we are largely prisoners of our own perceptions, and are capable of so much more than we think, but we habitually underestimate our potential and settle for what he calls "the 40%." His goal for himself, and his goal for you, is to reach 100%. The fact that this may not be possible is irrelevant to him. It's the striving, the discomfort, the pain that he seeks, not because it will get him to the goal but because it is the goal. Seeing what one can endure expands what one can achieve. As writers from Marcus Aurelius to Ernst Jünger have noted, "the obstacle is the way." CAN'T HURT ME is important not for its recitation of all the blisters and sweat and torn ligaments Goggins has endured, or for his achievements as a sailor or an athlete, but for the way he approaches the central questions regarding the difficulties we all face in life. Goggins has plenty of reason to play the vicitim, but chose another path, the path of self-ownership. It really is very simple. For example, when he discusses his obesity, he does not blame his father, racism or society: he blames himself. His mantra in every aspect of his life is that we own our own skin and our own decisions and too often, we use our traumas to justify things like laziness, apathy, cowardice, drug abuse, and alcoholism. Overcoming this self-sabotage requires being brutally honest with oneself. "Don't call yourself overweight," he all but shouts at the reader. "Say what you really are -- a fat f***!"" Carl von Clausewitz called this, "The appreciation of the situation." Goggins calls it a self-audit. He audits himself regularly, especially when he fails at something, but also when he is successful, too. He encourages a mind-set of brutal honesty with an emphasis on the brutal. He is very frank that he "gets his strength from a very dark place," and his ethos illustrates that, as does this book. He isn't a shiny, happy person. He isn't interested in fame. He doesn't have many friends. Even when he writes about the SEALs, he offers criticism -- something you won't see much if any of in other books by former members. Some readers may be offput by this very darkness, especially in an era in which whining and entitlement (something he especially despises) are now rampant everywhere. But that is why I consider this book important. It comes at a time when many are beginning to suspect that the victim mentality they've been told to sharpen their entire lives is actually an albatross, weighing them down, stranding them in weakness, unhappiness, and failure. CAN'T HURT ME is a fast and brutal read. It's inspiring, but it's not a feel-good memoir, and one can't help but wonder if Goggins takes any real pleasure out of life. He's sort of the Mace Windu of inspirational writers, a grim-faced warrior monk who is going to poke you in your love-handle and ask if you think that is the best you can do. But should you sweat it off, don't look to him for a pat on the back. Look to him to ask if you couldn't have done it more efficiently...and then to ask you what's next on your list of challenges. And why you aren't working on them yet.

Just read it!

David Goggins is a crazy human, but he knows how to get through to you. We are stronger than our minds lead us to believe. His story is eye opening. You’ll read some parts and think “man this guy has lost his mind” but you’ll also think “wow I can do more than I ever thought I could” While reading this book during 75 hard, I would push myself more and more everyday. I’d run and say “ok when I get to ____ I’ll stop and walk” and when I would get to that point, I’d think about Goggins and keep pushing myself further. Awesome book!

Stay Hard!

If you are really interested in changing your life and finding the intestinal fortitude to really do then this is for you. If you just want some kind words to make you feel good about where you are in life, don’t pick this up. Goggins is the type of guy who can carry the wallet Jules has in Pulp Fiction and get away with it. This has helped me to keep pushing even when I think I’ve gone far enough. This is a real life self help book, not a single thing rings false or like it was designed in some social experiment.

Straight talk, No BS, No Excuses

I am almost all the way through this book and I bought the audio book and physical copy less than 24 hours ago. I was introduced to David Goggins a while ago on YouTube and I enjoyed his content but never really deep dived into his stuff. I knew he was a baaaaad mf and a retired Navy Seal. Lately I am revamping my life. Losing my ego, realizing that I am an alcoholic, I am overweight, I am not performing at even a quarter of my potential. I am a walking zombie with a decent career but dang. I need to bring myself to my attention. THIS is that book. And, I see all these people dragging the book for cussing and for using the N word. DUDE, that was his experience. This book isn't meant to baby your PC feelings and insistence that, "words hurt, waaaaa." In fact, this book wouldn't slap as hard without his grit, authenticity, and without a filter for the faint of heart. This man overcame hell. He rose to the occasion. He was reborn out of the ashes of mediocrity and apparently a bunch of people can NOT handle it and would prefer to have him alter his recounting of his lived experience. What a joke. People are too soft. I would rather take advice from a BA like David Goggins than to ever try to feed my brain on some book that tip toes around feelings and tries to validate people who strive to become stagnant. If you want to be remarkable then you have to suffer. Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Challenge yourself every day. If you buy the clean version of this book.... you don't deserve to read it.

Honest and Remarkable Book.

I'm 2/3 of the way through this book. I'm loving every minute of it. From his rough childhood, to the Air Force test , to his SEAL training and up to his first 100 mile race so far. This guys book should be required reading in every university in America. He takes a attitude of life sucks .. Too bad.. be satisfied, adapt to be better or perish. He took the adapt to be better approach. We all have been wronged in life. Its up to us to either stay victims or be better than what we were despite our circumstances. That's what the core of the book is about. Not only can you overcome your circumstances, you can adapt and become better.

Excellent book. Love true story biographies. Facebook totally inspired me in many ways in my life. I am now on my recumbent bike trying to exercise at least half a mile to a mile extra a day. I will be turning 66 in July. Also did CrossFit when I was 57 and had to stop when I was 60 years old, when I needed a knee replacement. I have had the same perseverance and drive as Mr. Goggins.

I couldn't put this book down. When the pandemic started, I bought a recumbent bike and stretching equipment for my home. I used to go to the gym three times a week. As with Mr Groggins, I, too, am a very driven person. I persevere through many struggles in my life. It has been this way almost all of my life. I am now 65, turning 66 in July. I was married 34 years to a policeman, and I was a court reporter for 24 years, until I was diagnosed with petit mal seizures, which ended my court reporting careerand took away my driving license. My court reporting career created a persona for me. I took incredible pride in what I did. I excelled at my job, and many other reporters look to me as an example. At my retirement, my boss just cried me as the consummate court reporter. I never thought my peers looked at me this way. Of course, I was married to a man that enjoyed the money I made, which he drove me to work even harder and more. The one thing I missed and kept looking for in this book to the end was how Mr. Groggins was going to find that missing Link and his life, and that is the joy of living and not striving to always be the best or better. There is so much more out there in life than striving to be the best and getting better than what you have already accomplished. He seems to have missed part of life that is just plain fun, loving and enjoyable. For example, going out to meals with friends, going to the movies, going on walks, going on vacations, sitting in the backyard and enjoying some good music and a drink. When I left my husband after 34 years, I moved to Lincoln Hills, Sun City. California, in a 55 plus community. I was the youngest one here, yet my vibrance and gregarious nature gave me a lot of friendship. I just totally enjoyed being single and was the happiest single woman that anyone could imagine. I did a missionary in Honduras for 2 weeks, went to Israel and Jordan for two weeks, did two safaris in Africa, three weeks each. This was all by myself. This was true happiness and joy and gave me complete Independence without having to answer to anyone but myself for the first time in my life. Some think I got a little too independent, but I found the real me. I was blessed to have found a man right around the corner, who lost his wife. We were friends before then, as we walked the dogs in the neighborhood and enjoyed that activity. He is a retired captain from San Mateo county fire department. One of the most giving, loving, humble men I have ever met. I never thought at the age of 62 I would be blessed with the life that I have now, because I stopped trying to please everybody else and started pleasing myself. Life has so much more to offer than trying to be the best and pleasing everybody else, especially yourself. It brings so much joy to yourself to please others. I think that is what life is all about. I hope someday Mr Groggins will reach that point in his life. It took me until I was 55 years old, so I suppose you can go back to the old saying, " it's never too late. " When I was working my ass off, trying to please everybody else, trying to prove myself in my career make my husband have become, I neglected to see what life is really all about. My father said to me one day "Ellen, you need to stop and smell the roses.". I never really understood that saying until my husband decided to leave me after 34 years of marriage. Thank you for an incredible work I art in your book, as I am now increasing my drive in a healthier body during this pandemic and always pushing for at least another half a mile a day, and eating wiser. I want to live long, be as happy as I can, knowing that there will be many winding roads and struggles ahead of me, and love from the deepest part of my hesrt that I can. I go by The motto: dance as if no one is watching. Sincerely, Ellen Turinsky. If you choose, you can reach me through my email at eturinsky@yahoo. Great book. I have recommended it too many people. Best of luck!!

Inspiring for everyone, not just sports

Someone recommended this book in a fitness group, so I picked it up. I'm not a fitness buff, by any means. I have lots of changes I'd like to make in my life. Goggins relates to different situations and motivates for whatever stage of life you're in. I recommend this book to anyone who needs that kick in the pants to get moving to do more and be more.

Simply Amazing

This book is as raw as it gets. He said early on this isn’t to motivate you and this book doesn’t motivate you, this book makes you think about everything you’ve been through to get where you are and question is this it? What if there’s more. I 100% recommend this book to anyone who wants to grow into who they know they can be.

One of the baddest MFs of all time.

If you need some tough love, could benefit from a source of unending motivation, or just want to revel in the wake of one of the most intense people alive—you’re in the right place.

Read this all the way as soon as possible. It will change your life.

This book change my life. For far too long I was a glass half full kinda guy, not anymore. This book is for those who want to hold themselves accountable and for those who want to get better.

This book change my life. For far too long I was a glass half full kinda guy, not anymore. This book is for those who want to hold themselves accountable and for those who want to get better.

Best book I've read to date. It's an absolute must buy.

This book is literally my new favorite book I've ever read, even holding up to all the classics. Ok so am I biased? Maybe, I do like David goggins. Let's assume you have no clue who he is, buy this book, find out and get inspired. I read this book in a weekend, not because it's overly short but because I couldn't put this down. It starts off explaining about goggins early life and takes you along his journey, giving you tips and tricks goggins used throughout the struggles he faced. Also at the end of every chapter david goggins gives you a little homework in the form of these "challenges", ten total, I highly recommend buying this book and doing every single one. Truly an inspirational masterpiece that gives you the tools to harden your mind and turn your life around.

Amazing!!

This is by far the best book I have read. The content was real and eliminated the fluff. If you are stuck in a rut this is a great book to help you get back up.

very inspiring

A very inspiring biography with many lessons that can be taken away from it, no matter what your goals are.

Inspiring but also not great advice for most people and not well writen

His story is truly amazing in and of itself, from where he came to where he went and all the accomplishments in and of itself, despite the abuse and trauma. If you're reading it for the story, it is truly wow. Beyond wow. Like superhuman wow. But there are some things I didn't appreciate about this book. I can handle crass language, and am even easily amused by it, but he uses language all the time that just feels really demeaning as a woman, e.g. "I need to hem my vagina." It's not surprising he's been married 3 times if he throws around language like that - it's not the use of the word itself but implying that the word for female anatomy is something so terrible as comparing it to a complete failure and weakness. I have sons and I would never want them to read this as acceptable. He also jumps all over the place and tries to convert his experiences into guidance, but they just seem to be his own personal experience and I'm not sure how much it would translate to others. The advice just got flat out boring. His personal stories, struggles and achievements were the best parts of this book. I don't think this is a great read, and I'm surprised that it has 5 stars on amazon. However, if you want to learn how he handled life on his own terms, how to suck it up despite pain beyond measure - like beyond what any nearly human can tolerate, and in the process still not always getting your way and letting that go - it takes maturity to handle all that and I think this is where he evolves and succeeds.

unbelievably inspiring book

This book is a must-read. David Goggins’ story is incredible. This book will break you, challenge you, and build you back up again from start to finish.

highly motivating story

Hard to read at times (sad childhood etc) but could not put it down until I finished. Hard life but so motivating. I would give it 5 stars if not for all the foul language used (which added nothing to the story or the message.) Have to give the author credit though for beating all the odds and finding the courage and commitment to become a highly successful individual against all odds

Everyone should read

I think the most important thing this book taught me is I put too many limitations on myself. Most of us do. It was such an easy read and I'm glad he shared his story with the world and gave advice to help others push past their limits.

Amazing

David goggins shows the impossible is possible and if you train your mind your body and your soul you will reach any goal no matter how unattainable it seems What if?

solid

With the upmost respect… The book took a while to warm up to me. Not the best book for the average joe. Ch 7 & 8 hit home the most for me. Superb biography.

The book came dirty.

The book came from an Amazon warehouse and the book was dirty. I love the book and the author but didn't want a dirty book.

But This Book.

I can’t put this down for long. 1 day in I was on page 85. This is the Bible and it is so real and well written. Do yourself a favor and go buy this book and then commit to changing your life.

Put on your Armour Daily and pick up your Cross

I really enjoyed David’s book. I took away 2 stars because I strongly disagree with his comments on page 59. As an Irish Catholic Christian I viewed David Goggins messages in his book ‘Can’t Hurt Me’ from a Christian perspective. On page 353 David said, “the Buddha famously said life is suffering”. Jesus said in Luke 9:23, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow me." The whole message of the Cross is pain, discomfort, suffering are a part of daily life. We can embrace suffering or run away from it, but it will always be present. Often doing the Moral Good requires pain, discomfort, and suffering. David Goggins message of embracing pain and discomfort daily in physical fitness (work) and nutrition (healthy eating or fasting) as a “Way” to discipline the body and the mind is similar to the Christian Way of the Cross. I think it is a great path. Self discipline is a path requiring doing “violence” to your own selfish desires. Often comfort and the path of least resistance are a detriment to personal growth. It seems David found the middle way between extreme self discipline and resting/recovery by the end of his book. Also David speaks about putting on his mental Armor before he leaves his house each morning. In Ephesians 6:11 Saint Paul says “Put you on the armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the deceits of the devil. For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of this darkness.” Saint Paul describes the Armor we need to fight the good fight daily. Battling our flesh, the world, or the devil requires the proper Armor. David’s idea of Armor is similar to St Paul’s. If you prepare your mind and body with Spiritual Armor, a “Cause” State of mind and an “Offensive” proactive mindset you will be ready for the internal and external battles you will face each day. Also the idea that we are not fighting flesh and blood (ourselves or other people) but we are fighting against satanic and demonic influences of slavery to sin is very important. David speaks of exercising our personal demons. Instead of fighting, abusing, or hating ourselves or other people we can hate sin. Sloth, gluttony, envy, greed, pride, lust are our true enemies, not ourselves or other human beings. We can choose to battle these dragons daily and stop fighting the self or other. Love the sinner and hate the sin is far superior to being abusive to the self or others. David portrayed our daily battle in a similar light. What I really disagreed with is on page 59 David says, “Most, if not all, minorities, women, and gay people in America know that strain of loneliness as well. Of walking into rooms where you are the only one of your kind. Most White men have no idea how hard it can be. I wish they did”. I have to disagree 100% with this Critical Race Theory ideology. Grouping and defining all white males’ life experience, their identity, and their humanity by their skin color is racist. That is a tactic of the KKK. The fact is The KKK hated/hates Catholics. They called Catholics papists. Many of the 80 million Catholics in America are white males, so to lump all white males together by their skin color is ludicrous. Bigotry against Catholics is also a part of America’s history. When the Irish came to America the bigotry was mainly against their Catholic religion. Religious bigotry was part of the original 13 Colonies. Ironically, although the colonists fled England for religious freedom, religious bigotry was rampant in the early American colonies. Catholics weren’t welcome in most of the 13 colonies and eventually settled in Maryland. Many of these Catholics were white males. In the 1800’s signs in store windows read, “Irish need not apply”. This was basically religious bigotry against Irish Catholic immigrants many who were white males. The “only” of their kind. In the movie ‘One mans Hero’ starring Tom Beringer, “an Irish immigrant soldier recruited in the American army during the Mexican-American War faces an anti-immigrant and anti-Catholic bigotry from his fellow servicemen and defects to the Mexican army”. Bigotry was so bad in the American Army that Catholic soldiers, who happened to be white males, defected to the Mexican Army. Growing up as a Catholic Christian in a public school environment with a dominant atheistic, secular, and pagan subculture, was me being “the only one of my kind”. Often If I spoke up about my Catholic beliefs and who I was as a Catholic I experienced ridicule and bigotry. The same bigotry goes on in college campuses today against Catholics and Christians of all races, and many who happen to be white males. Bigotry against Catholics and Christians is everywhere in society and in the world. Statistics say anywhere from 200 to 10,000 Christians are martyred every month all over the world. Some of those Christians are white males. I enjoyed David’s book. I was disappointed that the ideology of Critical Race Theory appeared on page 59, stating white males have never experienced being “the only”. CRT is a Racist and Marxist ideology grouping people by their skin color or gender, or other “accidental“ characteristics they can’t change and not looking at their common humanity, soul, individuality or God given human dignity.

Inspirational- don’t take it all literally!

I finally got a copy of this and found myself enjoying it quite a bit! I did knock off a star because it reads like he sat down at his laptop and just slammed this book out. Which, there is nothing wrong with. Props to him getting it done, but it’s more of a preference thing. I see some people complaining that this book has a ton of bad advice, but I don’t think he was trying to tell everyone to go out and start running marathons with broken legs! I think his message is to stop avoiding the things you know you should do. Maybe it’s not fitness. Yes, he is all about fitness. But if you’re already fit, maybe the message for you here is to start saving money. Or start going to therapy. Or to end a toxic relationship. To take action and take charge of your life, no matter how daunting the task is. I found it inspirational, like a breath of fresh air, to get me motivated to do the things I’ve been putting off and stop making excuses for myself. Getting honest in your head is one of the scariest but most liberating thing you can do and this book encourages that. I did buy a copy for my dad as well because he is inspired by people like this. (Although I already think my dad himself is inspirational.) so maybe this isn’t the book for you but could be for someone in your life that needs a push. Overall, I just have to reiterate- this book is not just about pull-ups and marathons! If that’s the only takeaway message you’re getting, you’re missing the huge overlying theme: to push yourself to be a better person in ALL respects, not just fitness!

Wow

The growth in this man's life is wonderful! Thank you for this beautiful book! What if I make it! What if!

Great book

Great read getting to know David's mindset better

Amazing!

Get the audio book! It's like getting a few hours of extra Goggins podcast - stay hard!

Fantastic!

Goggins is a great example of what people are truly capable! An amazing inspiration! Time to put nose-to-concrete and see what I’m capable of! Thank you David for writing this book!

Absolute must read for everyone

This book is a must read for everybody who has a goal or commitment in their life. Couldn’t possibly hold this book in higher regard.

Self talk

This book is great. I really enjoyed the ride. David is a unique individual but his story can help everyone. I have always struggled with self talk but now I have the experience of this book to help me.

Amazing story

The is supposed to be a self-help book to help you find strength within yourself to accomplish your goals. However, I knew that I don’t have the same mental fortitude that David Goggins definitely has, so I skipped the chapters offering his advice and just read about his life. It is an amazing story and well worth reading.

Motivation

Great book if you are looking for some motivation or just a good kick in the pants to get going.

Awesome!

Great read.

Motivational excellence

By sharing his failures as much as his successes and being brutally honest about himself David Goggins has written one of the books that I believe everyone should read.

Clear cut teaching on overcoming your weak mind.

We like to live in a comfortable way, and this makes us soft. Being soft invites us to fall further and more painfully when the inevitable happens. Life is hard. We are not living up to our potential, and society rewards weakness and mediocrity. Depression and doubt, in such circumstances, threaten to overwhelm our sensibilities. This book, if you allow it to, and follow it's advice methodically, intensely, and unrelentingly, with the discipline born of the survival instinct within you, which is seeking to save you from the abyss of self-doubt and self-loathing, can be a powerful tool in your arsenal of becoming a person capable of leading yourself to victory. It will not be easy, but that is good, because easy leads to comfort, and comfort leads to weakness, and weakness leads to defeat, since reality will always come to live with you, despite your desires to the contrary. David Goggins deciding to share his wisdom with me is something I will never be able to repay him for, but I will try nonetheless. If you want to win the war within yourself, and you want to slay doubt and insecurity and bathe in their blood in a triumphant paean of victory over darkness, then purchase this book and adopt Mr. Goggins advice. Period.

Great Read

Loved the real world knowledge/experience. David truly shows true mind over matter. Highly recommend this book and hope you enjoy it like I did.

life changing

Everything this book changed the way I think . I’ve been fighting cancer for ten years and winning. This book got me motivated to get my life back.

Great Book

I don't really read books but this book is something else. I listened to lots of David Goggin's motivation and felt I should read his book. This book is amazing.

The 40% Rule - You are full of untapped potential

While the nature of Mr. Goggins' transformation & mental toughness manifested in his physical accomplishments, there is so much in this book that serves anyone looking to adapt and overcome. You can ALWAYS do more and do better for yourself. This book really helps shape your perspective if there is a part of you that is ready to stop complaining, be accountable and start actually living to your full potential. Your goal may not be to be a SEAL or an Ultra Marathoner, but knowing that you are the only thing in your way from a better life SHOULD make you uncomfortable and so should a lot of this book if that's true. I loved it! Edited on 8/21/21 Have to add to my review. I had admittedly not read the reviews on here since I read the book at the request of my husband. These reviews are really disappointing, but not because this book and this story are any less inspirational to me. It's because these people with the negative reviews (and yes they were read with an objective mindset) missed the point. You go in to each reading experience hoping to gain something for YOURSELF. People should check their own ego before claiming to be open to learning from others' experiences. My husband, much like Mr. Goggins experienced a very abusive childhood. Reading the reviews - not to pre-judge too harshly myself - I don't believe people realized that the minds/brains of people that grow up in severely abusive environments do not develop as those of people who grew up in more conventional families and environments. There is still a huge stigma surrounding mental health. So the one thing I can encourage readers is don't expect to learn from a perfect "role model" with these lessons, do not expect a man that has endured as much as he did to be eager to open his life up to you regarding his marriages and children. The story he wished to share was HIS story and what he overcame through these hard lessons was HIS experience. While what we each draw from this is subjective, your mind, your heart and intentions should most definitely be objective. There is mention of the foul language and misogyny. This is a testament to the fact that people only accept a message being received from someone like YOU. This is the opposite of getting out of your own way to learn something. It's not for the faint of heart or someone looking for a watered down version of someone's struggles just so you can walk away with enough inspiration to go drive your kids to school and go for your morning run. What a person like David Goggins had to overcome BEFORE mastering his own mind is more difficult than what most people achieve in a lifetime of privilege and comfort. His journey and story demands respect at the least. At best he is a HUGE inspiration to people who didn't have a shot in hell of making it let alone having an exceptional or even "normal life." The greater the pain the greater the gain.

Best book I’ve ever read!!!!

I knew the premise but didn’t think it would be this good! So inspiring!

Exceeded expectations

I read this d**n book in less than 2 days. I never have time to read anymore. But I couldn’t not for the life of me put it down. It kept calling me to finish. I had to finish. I needed this kind of kick to the a**. Now his mindset and this book isn’t for everybody. But I hope everyone who needs a little kick in the a** gets a chance to read it.

Best Read in a Long Time

This is probably the best book that I’ve read in a long time. In a world where people tend to give up at the slightest hint of adversity, it’s amazing to see what the human spirit can actually achieve. I have recommended this to numerous coworkers since finishing it. When I think I’m having a tough day at work, or feel that I’ve put in enough at the gym each day, I often reflect on this and go a little harder.

amazing

Use the mind or over power the mind to demolish that phrase in your life. I can’t! So your next problem is what if.

Fantastic story about an incredibly driven man who pushed his limits beyond the impossible.

I like his writing style using common language that is easy to relate to yet is woven into a story that is one you want to keep reading. What else can one human accomplish in a short lifetime? His feats of athleticism and endurance are hard to imagine, especially coming from his background of suffering and abuse. Very inspiring story even if you do not have any desire to become an ultra-endurance athlete or a Navy Seal or an Army Ranger.

Read This! An amazing story from an incredible guy who shows you how to start being your best self

Stay Hard! Merry Christmas! If you know anything about David Goggins, then you know what I’m talk about it. If not, then get ready to meet a man who could change your life. Can’t Hurt Me (364 pages) is the (living) autobiography of David Goggins – and he is having quite a life. But recounting his life accomplishments is not the principle subject of this book. Instead, David focuses on what he had to endure to achieve. From the book’s cover: For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare - poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a U.S. Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside magazine to name him The Fittest (Real) Man in America. In Can't Hurt Me, he shares his astonishing life story and reveals that most of us tap into only 40% of our capabilities. Goggins calls this The 40% Rule, and his story illuminates a path that anyone can follow to push past pain, demolish fear, and reach their full potential. Still not convinced you should this book? Go to YouTube and watch David Goggins. He has appeared on several top rated YouTube channels and podcasts. If you like what you see, you will like this book. Can’t Hurt Me is a raw account of David’s life and the writing style is a seamless transition from the David you have seen in video. David is living proof that accomplishing big (or really any) goals is possible through hard work. Based on his background and early life, David should have been a statistic in his words. He grew up with an abusive father in a broken home in a community full of prejudice and poverty. But, you can’t hurt David Goggins. What I like about this book is not only the story of triumph, but also the path forward outlined for the reader. At the end of each chapter are mini-challenges that you can implement today to begin changing your situation and chasing your goals the way David did. For instance, the Accountability Mirror (#accountabilitymirror) is a tactic used by David to set and achieve goals. It’s simple: Write your goal on a Post-It note, then put it on your bathroom mirror. Sounds easy, right? Try it; it works, especially if you have others in the house that use this mirror... Or, try the Cookie Jar (#cookiejar). The Cookie Jar is a physical reminder of how strong you are, especially when you feel weak or depressed. For me, I’m experimenting with an old cookie tin on my desk. As instructed, I'm filling the tin with slips of paper of major obstacles overcome in my life that can be later retrieved to serve as reminders of hardships already surmounted. David demonstrates that the way to accomplish goals is mental toughness – something most of us lack. To develop mental toughness, you have to be willingly to work and suffer and, in David’s words, callous your mind. When you understand this idea, the exploits that have made David famous make more sense. Each one was a mini-crucible on his path to fortify his mind and become a better version of his self. And, again, David outlines to the reader how to start acquiring their own mental toughness. In the end, what makes the book worth reading is David’s ability to tell his stories in a way that makes the reader think “if this guy can do it, maybe I can to it.” Then, he takes one more step forward than most to outline the initial path forward. I guess that should be expected from a man who has always take one more step forward than most. Stay Hard! See you at the Finish Line,

amazing

Extremely inspirational. His story is amazing and it impacted me deeply . . . . . . . . .

Great book!

Great book!! Definitely worth the read!

Great read

Great read

This is a must read for anyone

I recommend this book to everyone, a must read!

Fantastic read

No matter where you are in your life "You Can't Hurt Me" is a must read. David Coggins authored a best seller. His writing skill places you right into the book. It's energizing, motivating powerful and applicable. David Coggins endured a life of unimaginable hardship. Rather than playing the victim he persevered and made a champion of himself.

great Book

I really enjoyed it. Dude is an animal. Easy read and went fast. It motivated me to get after it. Stay Hard!

The most inspirational book I've ever read

David Goggina truly understands what it means to master ones mind. His relentless pursuit towards achieving his goals no matter the cost is what really moved me beyond words. I've never been so inspired in my life, this man has opened my mind to a whole new realm of endless possibilities. The human mind can accomplish anything. Thank you David.

David goggins is the MAN

I USE THIS product to meet women, i definitely recommend. he is a god among meer mortals. It is a MUST read.

Powerful auto biography

Strong message to entitlement minded young people. Nothing is owed to you. No excuses. Take responsibility for yourself. You can do more than you think. Stated clearly with no nonsense.

Introspection

This book was written in a no BS way, which i appreciated. It really shows how far we can go when we have control of our mind where we block out the the negative or discouraging thoughts we inject into our brains. The one thing I didn't enjoy is how graphic some of these chapters were. I also believe that while it's good to push our limits we should also listen to our body and that was something I didn't agree with David on. He worked his body to failure multiple times and I don't see how that's a healthy way to live. I think one can push their limit yet still stay afloat with their health.

AMAZING BOOK!!!!

One of the best books you will read!

I can't unread this!!!!

When someone important to me told me I should read this, I thought hey why not. I haven't been able to put it down. Not only that, it is incredibly empowering. There are some pretty vulgar points but having been military the last 15 years it's nothing I can't endure as a read. The mindset is incredible and now my spouse and I go round and round playfully with our Goggins Mindset. The mindset and personal accountability is so raw but real. We are no longer settling for what is simply comfortable. I wish I could love this a million times over. Totally worth it and I hope he writes more books.

Love!

Phenomenal book. I love Goggins! Very inspiring.

Great read. If your sensitive find a softer motivator because Goggins tells the harsh truth.

Great read. If your sensitive find a softer motivator because Goggins tells the harsh truth.

Very inspirational

Goggins' story is incredible. The hardships he had to overcome are just unbelievable. Who does three he'll weeks this guy. Just amazing and worth the read.

Fast shipping

Fast shipping, great book

This book will motivate you, teach you, and humble you. It most importantly will teach you empathy.

It taught me empathy and knowing that Others situations are worse than mine, and that anyone can overcome them by using the negative energy as fuel to tackle your goals. I strongly recommend the read.

A great roadmap for those interested in changing or implementing their mental abilities.

I came to write a review, and I saw how many readers were concerned about Goggins's language. I had no recall of that. So I went back and quickly looked at it, but I bought the Kindle version; maybe it was revised?...not sure. As a researcher of human performance in extreme environments, I found this book extremely helpful. Mostly because Goggins let me in his mind at ease (almost no filters). I read many of his fellow SEALs' books, and I can see the same patterns, but Goggins spells them aloud for me clean and cleverly. I spent three days reading this book. I wanted to go slow because there was so much into it that I didn't want to miss some good clue. It was very engaging and easy to read. He is a good storyteller. I called one of my fellows, and even though it is not her specific field, I told her, "you have to read this...you are going to love this guy, he is so clever...so clever... he spells out a roadmap!!!" So I bought a copy and sent it to her. Of course, it would take me quite long to explain why, but as a tip, I suggest paying attention to his internal dialogue, how it happens and how he wins over it. Additionally, do not focus on his "motivation" but on his "mindset" (if you want to know more about "mindset," I recommend looking at scholars like C. Dweck and A.J. Crum). I can totally understand how some people might perceive him as too rough or too addicted to pain; I guess this happens because we might naturally drop some biases due to our inability to relate to the intensity of the tasks he engages. However, I am thankful because by exposing his thoughts and experience, people like Goggins offer us a great roadmap!

this book should cost $500

If I knew the value I would get from this book before I purchased it, I would have been willing to drop a considerable amount of money for it. My cardio literally increase by 60% (ifykyk), my struggles were put into perspective, and I learned highly valuable ways to push through adversity. These are not baseless claims either. This book is the most impactful thing of my life, and after my third time reading it I truly have begun to understand what it takes to be uncommon. Thanks Goggins, you are a special human and I am honored to even exist in the same time as you. After reading this I suggest watching every interview and podcast he has done. They all reinforce the lessons in this book and gives a deeper insight into his mind.

Goggins is top G

Stay hard

Outstanding motivational story

An amazing story of overcoming fears, pushing beyond the limits and becoming strong. This book is a beautiful and inspiring story. I recommend this book to anyone that is seeking to become a warrior and yo anyone that wants to overcome any adversity.

Absolutely captivated 50 pages in without blinking.

I'm speechless. Absolutely captivated 50 pages in without blinking. Certain to finish this tonight.

Valuable

In my unprofessional opinion, Mr. Goggins has a mental disorder. Forget the negative connotation of that phrase. The disorder he has is one of a pursuit of perfection. Its unachievable, but unbelievably admirable. The drive and will that he possess is nothing short of amazing. I grew up in an area very close to Mr. Goggins at roughly the same time period. I completely understand what it must have been like for him to be "the only". I have no doubt that shaped him. If you are a person who can read written word and find even an ounce of motivation from it, prepare to get as motivated as you have ever been after reading this book. Its raw, powerful, and a message that almost 100% of society needs to hear and practice.

In a time of weakness...

David Goggins is without a doubt one of the most inspirational people on the face of the planet. He and people like him are what we need to push humanity back off of the proverbial (and literal) couch and into action. We humans have become weak and comfortable, and as a result things around us are crumbling. It's time to get uncomfortable and build our mental callousness before it's too late. All it takes is for YOU to change yourself. David Goggins will inspire you to do that if you read this book. Beyond a shadow of a doubt he has inspired me. Mr. Goggins' life story will teach you to stop being content with mediocrity and build a better you; and in turn maybe you can inspire others to do the same. STAY HARD!

Life changing

You want to talk about a book that is gritty.. this is it. This was bought for me while I was incarcerated in jail. I read and re-read this book over and over, applying the principles and challenges in it. It completely changed my way of thinking and brought me out of a very dark place. I would buy 100 copies and give these out to anyone who finds themselves in need of altering their faulty thinking

Amazing book (heads up, there are a lot of cuss words)

This book really opens your mind to the potential that we all have, mentally and physically.

A real page turner

Could not put this book down. He helps you feel what he went through, and how he got there. I took lots of notes.

awesome story

This book is so motivating and so raw. I will give it to every person I know if I could! He is my hero. He is a shining example of how to build a life of glory from very little.

loved it!

Fantastic read. What an amazing and inspiring story. We are all capable of much more than we think. Thanks for letting me know I have much more in the tank!

A strong start but gets repetitive...

The book started off strong, but it got a bit repetitive in later chapters. Dreams up wild physical test, trains for the physical task, occasionally fails and repeats if so, isn't satisfied, dreams up even wilder task. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book and do not regret buying it, but I expected something a bit more life-changing advice than just listing his personal accomplishments. Those who are offended by the language probably shouldn't be reading a book by a military guy in the first place. It's only a couple of times per chapter, not every other word as some reviews implied.

Interesting story, Dangerous methodology

I bought Can’t Hurt Me after tuning into the Rich Roll podcast recently when David Goggins was a guest. I’d also heard him about a year ago so was already familiar with his story. As a 55 year old competitive female endurance athlete, I thought I might glean some useful tidbits and possibly some inspirational insights from the book. Although the in-depth description of Navy Seal training was interesting, and the book was well written, I have to say that for a guy who writes incessantly about feeling “stupid” and prejudiced against, he doesn’t do much to rise above (or lead by example) by lacing every page with non-stop profanity. I intensely disliked his various descriptions of female genitalia as a synonym for weakness. I get that it was Drill Sargent talk during Seal Training but Goggins defaults to it as self talk whenever he’s experiencing a low point in a race, and that’s on him. It’s actually disturbing that he can drum up adrenaline that way. In addition, while some of the points of this book are valid (as in how much time people waste on social media and watching television, yet complain that they don’t have time to exercise ), Goggins seems truly addicted to pain and suffering and doesn’t actually seem to be able to feel any other emotion. He is self-proclaimed “the badest mother-f*****” on the planet, and those words are repeated over and over throughout the book. Yawn. He perpetually overtrains with zero regard for how it’s affecting his body. No wonder he crashed and burned and trashed his adrenals. He’s lucky to be alive. This was more an autobiography of a tormented man who can’t feel happiness so seeks out endless pain to validate his existence, and is cheering the reader on to seek out the same. I understand the mental game of endurance but feel Goggins takes it to an extremely unhealthy level. You only get this one body. If you unnecessarily destroy it, what then?

Good yard stick..

Used for mental comparison, this book has made it incredibly uncomfortable for me to quit and make excuses. I'm impressed.

Amazing

Amazing book

Amazing book

Great motivational book

Great book for self improvement

Just a precaution, if you don't like swearing, this book ain't for you and that's exactly why you should get it! Great messages, great lessons, helped me strengthen my mind more, I ran 15 Miles and I wanted to stop after 11,(that's 2 hours of running already and 2 and 30 min at 15 Miles) but I pushed through. Of course I'm just getting started, one day at a time, Are you?

Amazing Story!

Good read, interesting story

Very touch ing story

I enjoyed David's story! It is a reminder, as a teacher, to constantly be sensitive to the behavior of all of my students, as we never know what kids are going through at home. I admire the way that David overcame what life threw at him and turned these challenges into making himself a person who refused to give up! Thank you for sharing your story, David! It touched my life in a very positive way!

This book changes lives

Jaw dropping, impressive, raw, real, & a life changer of a book. You will never think the same way after reading this. This book pulls greatness out of you & leaves you feeling inspired. I recommend everyone read this book, it is a life changer & a mind shifter. There's so much I could say but the best thing I can say is READ IT!

Interesting story that can motivate

Very interesting story of a navy seal. It makes you stop and think, laugh, and challenges you to become a better person. David Goggins is like no other when it comes to self discipline and overcoming obstacles in his life. Thanks for the story Mr. Goggins.

very inspiring

This book inspired me to ask myself what if on a lot of things in my life and this simple question will change my mindset and hopefully my life……this book is a Must Read!

Phenomenal

This book has changed me. As a fan of David Goggins, I had finally decided to get this book. Before this book, I did workouts, I ran, I worked hard. So I thought. The lessons In this book are lessons he learned through his life. His life story is an amazing journey. Abused, overweight, failed in the Air Force, but became navy seal, ultramarathon runner, and pull-up world record. All while having a heart condition that makes physical activity much more difficult for him. But this book is more than a humble brag. The book isn’t about him, it’s about you. There are 10 challenges in the book, as well as many tactics and tips to help you become your best self and achieve even more than your goals. This book was an eye opener. On paper I did everything write, but I wasn’t working out hard enough, I wasn’t trying to get better academically, I didn’t challenge my weaknesses, I hid my ugly past and insecurities behind me. This book has received a lot of hate from people claiming it is too harsh. It is a very hard book to read. It dose not tell you “you are amazing”. It tells the ugly truths about life. It doesn’t motivate you. It’s down to earth. It feels like a gut punch because the truth does hurt. You have to own your failures and weaknesses and keep going. This book is to much for a lot of people. But if you have that little voice quietly challenge by you, peeping in challenges that you ignore. If you are the person who refuses to give up or give in, this mans life and his lessons are well worth a read.

Love this

Mentality is key to survival and this man proves it. David Gobbins is a hero and badass. I watch all his videos now.

Great Read!!

Great book for anyone to read!

awesome

Goggins has more than inspired me - this book will not be for everyone - but I have told everyone about it

Great Motivating Read

David Goggins is uniquely qualified to talk about mastering your mind. He's been through so many extreme situations--from being physically abused by his father to running ultra-marathons to going through Navy Seal "Hell Week" multiple times--that he's been forced to train his mind to deal with the pain inflicted on him and the pain he's invited on himself. He doesn't just have a high pain threshold, he has a way of welcoming discomfort; it's how he knows he's challenging himself. How much you take from "Can't Hurt Me" will depend on your reasons for picking up the book in the first place. I'm a long-distance runner and occasional ultra-runner who heard about Goggins on a podcast and wanted to learn more about his ultras. As such, the racing was the most interesting section for me. He gets into ultra-running to raise money for a charity. Of course, Goggins finds the hardest ultra (Badwater) he can, so I was left wondering whether his primary motivation was charity or to test himself. Goggins' life seems to be about these tests: how far he can run, whether he can finish SEAL training first in his class, how many pull-ups he can do. His approach to life is uncommon, but I think that reading about how hard he works is inspiring. The writer who helped Goggins organize and write "Can't Hurt Me" did a great job. The book is roughly chronological, starting with Goggins' rough childhood in Buffalo. He circles around to his family a little bit at the end but I felt the book needed more resolution with the author's father and brother. In general, I get the sense that Goggins is so self-focused and so intense that he isn't very good at sustaining relationships with other people--which is why I think you have to take his advice with a grain of salt. My own philosophy is that life is about finding balance if you have a family, so you could never be as "pedal to the metal" all the time as Goggins is. (For a great portrait of this, read Jesse Itzler's "Living with a SEAL.) It's tough to criticize a memoir without making judgy comments about its author. I think Goggins is amazing. His willpower is astonishing, and his accomplishments in the military and in running and strength exercises are commendable. But I came away from this book feeling like I'd never want to BE David Goggins. He seems to derive strength from confrontation, and he is a big believer in something called "taking souls," which means breaking down opponents psychologically. I don't have any interest in taking anyone's soul. Plus I feel like Goggins purposely made things harder than they needed to be. He writes about how his first ultra led him to possible kidney damage because of his nutrition choices during the race, and he recounts this memory with a weird sort of pride. Of the few pictures in the book, a couple are of his mangled feet after an ultra and his mangled hands after a pull-up record attempt. Spend a few days reading about what is eaten during ultras. Buy a decent pair of running shoes. Why make things purposely harder than they need to be? The section on SEAL training is fascinating, as are Goggins' memories of childhood and adolescence. He doesn't write much about his military career overseas, but I have a feeling he's not allowed to write about that. Overall, I think "Can't Hurt Me" is a great introduction to David Goggins, sort of his origin story. Read this, then you can follow him a bit more knowledgeably and check out his interviews online.

Wow, I never write reviews for books

I mean, there’s already thousands of reviews lol. Now I can see why. I can’t remember the last time I finished a book so fast. I think the reason this book was so great to read is he goes into specific details but at same time. without adding in too much fluff. A lot of books, whether nonfiction or otherwise sometimes take awhile to get to a point. This book never does that. Even the ends at each chapter don’t come off as corny or forced in. Content wise? Wow, extremely inspiring, I ran cross country in high school so I do enjoy running longer distances, though I’ve never considered an Ironman or any ultra races. After reading this, I’m very interested in training for one of those races. I see several similarities between myself and Goggins. I know several reviewers didn’t like how he repeatedly mentioned suffering or talking intensely at one self. But I can relate to that mentality a bit. On tougher runs I get tough on myself, if I’m on a long run or bike ride and I’m feeling the pain and boredom, I got to give myself a kick in the ass. Reading how he used his own techniques in highly difficult situations was awe inspiring and fascinating to learn about. It is a great read, I recommend it to anyone who wants to feel more fulfilled. I will say in terms of the vulgar language, maybe because I’m used to, comfortable with it in my own life etc, but I was expecting much more vulgar language based off of what reviews said. How someone perceives vulgar language though is relative though. There are a couple times, and literally only a couple, where he uses a woman’s reproductive anatomy as an analogy to feeling weak etc. I can see why that was criticized but other than those rare examples of choice words, (I think twice in the book) it’s a well written story of perseverance and survival. One of the best books I’ve ever read without question.

Outstanding

One of the best books I’ve read!

Must Have

This is one of those books that you just can’t put down. If you are looking for a great book about motivation, motivation and an example of how to overcome adversity…this book is for you.

Must Read!

Inspiring

David Goggins-living life and mastering what seem impossible

Just finished this book and am still amazed by the determination and overcoming what seems impossible through mental and physical determination. Plus he is good at putting his thoughts on paper.

Great Book

Read it from the library and enjoyed it so much I purchased it. Came in great condition and overall a great book.

Great ready that made me self-examine myself!

I would recommend this book to anyone who hasn’t given up on dreams they have as it is a story of defying odds and overcoming challenges.

Couldn’t put it down!

It was the book I didn’t know I needed. So much respect for this man, and so grateful he told his inspiring story for the rest of us to learn from!

Loved it!

Favorite book! Best inspirational idol. Hardest man on the planet. Greatest mental toughness. Very much recommended! Respect.

Excellent Example of Fortitude!!

An excellent story about an amazing individual! I will not waste time summarizing this book - READ IT!! David's life story is very impressive!! A book to keep! The important thing is ... WHAT will reading this book do for you? David's story teaches a very strong lesson in fortitude that is applicable to ALL AGES (little kids to the elderly). He's the "real deal" in demonstrating that the power of the mind can only be accessed and utilized when it has experienced hardship and suffering. That means that we consistently miss out on becoming our best selves when we stay in "the comfort zone" all our lives and avoid difficult tasks. Thus, it makes complete sense to understand that taking the "difficult and hard path" (when we are at a crossroad where it would be easy to stay comfortable and avoid pain) lends access toward achieving things you never thought possible because you are afraid or too lazy. He shows you that taking the hard path forces you to get at the core of who you are. Facing challenges (however small they may be) creates mental callouses so that those "difficult things" become easier as you perfect the person that is YOU. Repeatedly taking the more difficult path creates a feedback loop that allows you to excel and achieve more and more as you discover and unveil the "best self" that you can be. David demonstrates this superbly by his life's work and the incredible challenges he faced. He purposely seeks the harder path, and he does all this without an ego to pave the way. He is out to impress no one but himself!! He is true to himself before anything else, and his excellence in character shines. This book is trying to say that we ALL have that power, and reading it will undoubtedly cause you to stop and think about yourself and your life and how you can start now to become the best "YOU" that you can be. It's great that after each chapter, David gives you clear guidelines toward achieving your excellence that he used on himself as he went through his transformation. Oh, as for the "cussing" that some reviewers commented they didn't like in the book. These people are MISSING THE POINT!! David's cussing isn't excessive, and it's in total character with his life story and his EXTREME experiences. Language is a way to express our emotions. Cuss words exist as a way to express extreme feeling or emotion while it also increases tolerance to pain. Such words elicit attention and reaction from the listener toward the speaker's feelings about something. So do not ignore this great story about David and the lessons learned just because he uses cuss words - it will be your loss if you do.

Great book

Very inspirational

Can't Hurt Me

Easy read with lots of detail. The perseverance, and courage it took to look at oneself, and be so vulnerable over and over again was astounding. In short, there is always a better version of you, work for it #stayhard

Amazing book

Amazing book

Great read with a different perspective.

Great book that will get you off your ass and looking to run through some walls. Helps show you what people are truly capable of when they make up their minds to do something. I have listen to Goggins for a long time and this read was still phenomenal And filled with information that I haven’t heard from him before. Worth the purchase and time to read.

Calloused Mind

Clearly Mr. Goggins is wired a little different than Joe Regular down the street. However, what he says is true. Your mind is a powerful tool that is under utilized. If you apply 1% of the advise in this book, you’ll be in a better place. Great read.

Mixed feelings

Goggins is a true self mastery achiever, you will have to respect that about him. His childhood (father) was appalling and he pulled himself out of the nastiest place. Not sure I could have done so. First, I wish all these people complaining about the profanity level would just shut up, it’s irrelevant. Just watched an episode of Ozark and every sentence has at least one f%#k in it, as do half the popular songs seem to now as well. So Goggins is no worse than that. Get over it. The one thing I am a bit reluctant to praise here is his glorification of pain as the path. He does medically foolish things. He is a masochist. I don’t think it’s necessary to be so self punishing to become self-realized. I think psychologically he was so traumatized as a child that he sought to overcome all vulnerability by torturing himself, so as to prove he could take anything, thus “can’t hurt me”. Meanwhile he’s referring to several divorces and so on, not sure what he stands for - as a SEAL, as compared to Jocko Willink say - other than extreme pain tolerance. Something isn’t right here. You see what you think.

Amazing inspiration

When you read Goggins book and hear what he went through is absolutely amazing. I read the book for motivation and when I need some inspiration his book is right there to guide me along. Great book, easy to read. GET HARD!

Incredible

Great Autobiography. Self Help Challenges have actually helped me over the course of the months I have been reading and working this book. Inspirational and realistic.

A different kind of survival story

Most “survival” stories focus on the ordeals of someone dropped into a horrendous situation accidentally, or against their will; the first part of this heavily autobiographical self-help workbook turns around a classic survival tale, albeit with a child protagonist. Chief Goggins started out an abused child, encountered atavistic racism as one of very few African-Americans in a small Indiana town, and was written off as a “special needs” kid headed for life’s trash can. I’m not going to recapitulate his unique achievements as an adult; I recommend you read his author bio — he is in every way an extraordinary man. That said, those achievements, and the transcendence of his background, while lending credibility to his advice, are not what make this book such a gripping read. This is a survival story of a different kind: this is a man who has survived himself. In the classic survival tale, the protagonist digs deep in the face of impossible odds; Chief Goggins creates those odds in the pursuit of seemingly impossible things and then narrowly skirts self-inflicted death over and over while pursuing them. He has learned to live with that voice that all of us who push ourselves can expect to hear: “Why am I doing this?” There were times when my heart almost broke, as I asked that for him — why *are* you doing this? What drives you so? — but the end salvages this from becoming the bizarre story of a man addicted to agony. Like some other “addicts” of every stripe, the author has a spiritual transformation — I realize this will make some of you wince, but this is one is laced with a great deal of profanity, and has the freshness of one who has seen to the very core of the self. This is a man who has redefined where the edge is, and he has come back a true warrior-monk. Ok, so it’s a good read — is it going to change something for you? All too often in life, we blame external circumstances, and the location of cause outside ourselves also robs us of the power to cause something different ourselves. There will be times, if you are the sort of person who wants more from life, where there will be no more affirmation coming from loved ones, your teachers will be long gone, and you will be out there, alone, trying to survive yourself and your self-inflicted goal. Your mind will say “Why not just rejoin the herd? Why am I doing this?” This book will build your will so that when that voice speaks up, sounding so very reasonable, you will move forward and endure. I’m a pretty accomplished life coach and leadership consultant, and I can tell you that I benefited tremendously from reading it, and commend it to you in the highest terms.

Excellent

Excellent read! Suggest this to everyone!!

Once you start reading this book, you won't be able to put it down.

I rarely read anything other than business books and often don't finish a book I start reading. This book was irresistible. David Goggins life makes such a compelling story. Those who come from difficult beginnings can relate to his childhood and the struggle to become the person he knows he can be. Not only is it an excellent story that is well written, but it also has so many teachings that we can all use in our own lives. I highly recommend this book.

A great read to get you motivated about life

I enjoyed this book. Gets you motivated

Stay hard is more than just a saying

I’ve read many great books but none come close to this masterpiece. It makes you look at your life and dig deeper. If you want more from life, David Goggins will help you get it. This book gave me courage to take on the Spartan Beast at Killington Vermont with the help of a friend. “Who’s gonna carry the boats and the logs” you can do it!!

Take Charge of Your Life. Please read this inspiring biography.

Real is dramatically different and spectacularly better than fake. In our current world of fake, please reward yourself with the authenticity of this heroes life.

Great read

this book is a great read. I recommend this book to anyone. Don't judge this book by its cover. It's about the life and perseverance that David Goggin's has gone through. I bought one for all my kids

Good buy. Treasure

I love reading this book. Inspirational & intense.

awesome

I knew it would be, from listening to his podcasts before working out every day. He is the real deal.

Semper Fi

I highly recommend this, Goggins is Legendary. I think kids in school should have this as required reading. I recommend having this book collaborate with quantum computers in the future. Semper Fi.

Absolutely Phenomenal Book

Utmost respect for David Goggins!

Excellent read. Awesome story, well told. Learn the game, how it's played and how to win!

This is one of my favorite and easiest psuedo self-help/autobiography book yet. David Goggins went from an abused kid heading nowhere to superhuman. The best thing is he tells you how he does it and his mistakes and shortcomings along the way. He has figured it out and spells it out in simple easy to understand terms. I think one reason I like this book so much is after having read many self help books loaded on theory and simplistic explanations David actually tells you what to do. SPOILER ALERT: It's all a mind game going on in your head. To win you have to do the work, gain control of your thoughts and beliefs and stay on it all the time. Key take away - the game/battle never ends! It's called your life and the ending is up for grabs. Make your choices and go write your story. I highly recommend this book.

good and honest answers to hard questions

i knew the book was good from the reviews, but i had no idea the advice provided in this book would provide answers so transparent to questions like “how do i become satisfied? how do i become stronger? how do i get after what i want?” highly recommend for those wanting to improve or want a crazy interesting story

Mindset is Everything

David Goggins, Cant hurt me depicts the essence of the power of your mentality and taking control of your life. I throughly enjoyed this read and his journey. It is a raw, uncut, and unfiltered. I will say he takes things to a different level of extreme but at the core I was inspired in how we truly control our fate and it is up the work we put in and the choices we make that determine our life despite the cards we are dealt. His writing and storytelling was refreshing.

Inspiring

While reading David’s book I found myself challenging myself daily meaning just while reading this book I was already being affected by it. It will affect the way I approach life from now on. Do yourself a favor and read this book. You will be a better person without any doubt in my mind.

mind blowing

I don’t curse and hate it. However, the content is sooo good I couldn’t put the book down. One of the most inspiring… but practical and honest inspiration. Would recommend that everyone reads this book. It will change your life.

Great athlete, not so great husband and father

I bought this after reading the sample chapters, which were amazing. Everything leading up to him becoming a Seal is also really good. After that, it's just one personal challenge after another until the end of the book. At some point, it comes off as bragging. I couldn't help but wonder what his family life was like during all of this. After all, he wrote a book that's entirely about him, and didn't even mention the child he supposedly fathered. His wife only got mentioned when she was supporting him during his races. His second marriage ended in divorce as well (shocker). While I know he's not allowed to talk about Navy Seal work, it really did seem like he spent his 20 year military career doing physical training, marathons, and recruiting. On one level, the guy has accomplished more than most on the physical level, but there's more to life than pull-ups and marathons.

Soooooo gooood respectfully

I read alotttt of books and respectfully this is one of the best mental toughness books I have ever laid my eyes on. The story telling and the challenges that David puts in front of you stretches you to become a better person. Love this book would reccomend this book to anyone whether your a weak simp needing to become strong or if you regard yourself as mentally tough and want to take it to another lever

he broke the code I’ve been searching for

Thank you for sharing this message. Incredible story. I’m 65 and I finally understand. Can’t hurt me is life changing.

Excellent to Ignite Your Purpose

David Goggins is real and raw in this book. Such an authentic and unapologetic writing style. The book read as if he and I were having a conversation about his life and his soul purpose was to challenge my way of think and kickstart my mindset to work towards my purpose. If you’re in a rut and need a gut check to get over the BS running in your head this is the book for you. Life is about mindset and mental toughness. This book hammers that home and reminds you that you are the only one in your way. He gives you amazing actionable steps to follow and apply to your everyday life no matter where you are at in your journey. Now get out of your comfort zone and get HARD! MUST READ FOR EVERYONE!!!!

Does he need a review?

We are talking about David Goggins here!! interesting and motivating read

Very good book.

Experience, how to challenge yourself. Give your best , learn from you failures and improve to be a better person.

Great read

If you need some motivation, read this book. Once you read it, go be uncommon amongst the uncommon, take some souls, and stay hard. Once you read it, you will understand.

Changed my life

The idea that your brain has a ‘tactical advantage’ over you, and the attitude that warrior has to have toward his own self-lies and weakness, we’re game changers. David bootstraps himself, starting at the beginning, with his physical body - from nothing. It’s a great object lesson in how we have all been domesticated and become soft. Other ideas, like being true to yourself, eschewing tokens and trinkets, resonate with a truth for all ages, without being preachy. If there are monks of physical discipline, this man is one of them. Watching his trajectory and brutal honesty, one can’t help but be moved. If you want truth. The hard truth, this is the best place to find it. I highly recommend a David Goggins Accountability group on Facebook. It is full of ugly and inspiring ‘before’ photos. People inspired to make their journey to improve not just their bodies, but recover from addiction, financial ruin - all is it. This book came out at the perfect time, as we are victims of our own success, having traded dreams for security, having lost something wild and indomitable. Boars basically turn to pink piggies when you put them in a pen. And the reverse is true, also. Humans absolutely *are* over-domesticated, thin-skinned, weak, and miserable. Goggins has started a Paleolithic revolution with this book - though his intention was simply to pursue his personal dreams. As nomadic hunter gatherers, we are probably at the weakest form we have ever been in. Physically and mentally. I recommend the audiobook for its bonus features. Strap in and prepare to have your brain rewired, tuned to a more primal and rewarding time.

Life changing

Best book I’ve ever read. On my 3rd time through it.

Insane

I read this book in between my sets at the gym and kept me motivated the whole way until my workout was over and some. Days that I didn't want to workout I still went because of this book. This book helped me callous my mind better to push past mental blocks that would usually keep me in bed. Not anymore. Great book.

A must read

This is the first book I have read in a long time and it pulled me in from the start. I needed this and I know anyone would benefit greatly from reading it.

What if?

Great, deeply inspiring and brutally honest account of one man’s determination to push beyond his limits mentally and physically. What if… the impossible is possible. Go for it and challenge yourself.

You tired of excuses and losing? Read it!

I had seen Goggins on Rogan a while ago and liked his message- no nonsense and no excuses. I got the book this summer and it was the same demeanor and mind set. The easiest thing to do is make excuses, blame people, blame your childhood, whatever. He doesn’t ignore problems or challenge-Goggins has and suggests you deal with them head on with all the crap they bring. He’s not saying you have to do ultra marathons he is saying get uncomfortable bc life will get that way and you’ll be equipped to deal with it. Goggins could easily be 300 lbs on Prozac working at Walmart- he is who he is bc he deals with his load of crap he’s been given. If you read this and only take away “he’s vulgar and curses excessively “ you clearly 1) miss the point and 2) have never dealt with real adversity (not i failed calculus in college adversity but REAL problems). A good man who is authentic and driven and has motivated me too look inwards to lose 20 lbs, deal with issues expressing myself and push myself mentally, physically and emotionally. Face your problems, deal with them and challenges yourself as a human being. Stay hard!

Wow, just WOW!!!

David Goggins is a beast and an inspiration. This book keeps it real, and provides lessons that are easy to follow but not to execute. And that is the f’n point!

Highly motivational

Coming from a man that has been through so much in the past year, this book came into my life and was exactly what I needed. I went from contemplating suicide to waking up every read to work on my purpose and run through a brick wall! This book will change and save lives! Thank you David for your service and being vulnerable enough to step out your comfort zone and tell your story!

Read lots of self help books

Running extra miles with the head phones on. A real self help book. Motivating-wake up be healthy. Life is good! Now have a voice. Change the reflection in the mirror. David did it and shows you how he did it.

An amazing book. I enjoyed reading every word.

I loved how David had to dig deep and look past all the doubt and negativity and kept pushing forward. The only reason I didn't give the book a five is because there were parts that seemed unfinished. What happened to some of the people in the story? I just wanted an answer to that question. This book is a guide book for me to become a much better version of myself. I am going to read it again and gleam more information about how to apply it to myself. I am not looking forward to the pain, but I am looking forward to the growth that will come from putting in the work. Thank you for sharing your experience and for giving someone like me hope.

Great read

Great read. Phenomenal writer and an inspiring story. Didn't want it to end. Will reread.

Read this as a message to your own life

Everyone must read this story at some point in their life. It's a story that proves anyone can choose to be extraordinary and there is always a way to achieve whatever you put your mind and willpower to. If you know you're meant for more in this life, read it and take action.

Must read

This is a must read if you are looking for that spark to light the fire of self improvement.

Ignorant 1 star reviews.

There are a lot of 1 star reviews where people say the “don’t care for the cussing.” There is a clean version of this book. If you can’t handle reading swears, then do a little bit of searching and realize that there’s a version for you. I also saw a 2 star review where a person complained that they couldn’t work 70 hours a week and run 8 miles a day without balancing their family life, so this book didn’t help them. David Goggins set out to become a navy seal, obviously it’s not directly applicable to your life, and you missed the point. This man had an incredibly hard upbringing and despite that, he pushed himself beyond his perceived limits. And he challenges you to do the same in the context of your life. I even saw a couple 1 star reviews on the clean version, stating they gave it 1 star because they ordered it on accident. They even thanked him for his service at the end of this 1 star review they gave for their mistake. I also ordered the clean version on accident, cancelled it and got the original version. Why would I leave a bad review for my mistake. Anyway, I saw these unfounded low star reviews and felt compelled to address them. They all come out of ignorance. The fact is, this book is a well written account of David Goggins’ life with all its trials and tribulations and how he kept pushing through to defy the odds and change his mind to become who he wanted to be. It is great inspiration for anybody who is trying to become who they want to be, which I think is most, if not all of us. I recommend it to everyone. And if you don’t care for swearing, there is a clean version for you :) Have a great day :)

This is a tool for people with thick skin and strong internal drive and lotus of control

People have been writing self-help books for so long and in so many different ways that’s it hard to know what is going to actually help you. A lot of ideals shared in these books, while interesting make no lasting impact. I find most self-help books to be too intellectual, in that they don’t often appeal to the common man or the literarily disinclined. This is important because that means there are entire groups of individuals who will not be reached by these materials because they are not applicable to their lives. I also usually find self-help books to be soft in their approach for my needs. This is not the case with David Goggin’s Can’t Hurt Me. I learned about David through a friend and listened to him through podcasts first and became very interested in his story. I have followed many episodes he’s done since and followed him on social media for his “motivational” musings. The truth is, David Goggins is by no means motivational. David Goggins is deliberate and driven in everything he does no matter how insane it seems. Through his talks and contributions to this book it is clear he cannot be molded into anyone’s idea of a motivator or life coach. He is not overly optimistic; instead shrewd in his approach to life, speaking, and writing. Even with a ghost writer, David Goggins cannot be sensored enough to be appropriate for all audiences. For those that share David’s masochistic competitivism and no sugar-coating mindset, this book is an imperative addition to the self-help/memoir genre. I enjoy the audiobook for the podcast style conversation that you cannot get from this hardback but also I wanted to have a copy for my collection as well as be able to sit down and do the challenges that are included. If you’re serious about the information, both are necessary. Either way you enjoy it, if you can get over the harsh language (which for me added something because I was raised with this kind of language and mindset), you will find both a compelling biography of pure human will and strength, advice, and action items on how to be the best version of yourself you can be. This works for those who come from a similar upbringing and respond to this kind of leadership. As Goggins himself explains through his years of service, he is not an ideal leader for all personality types. He’s a hard “MF” and that comes with some hard “MF” language. This may not be the self-help book the snowflake generation deserves but its the one we need right now while hard-work, self-discipline, and delaying gratification seem all but forgotten.

Great book!

I was hooked after ready the introduction to the book!

Life changing

I felt compelled to write a review after just finishing the last page crying. Thank you David for being so brutally honest, it was so brave of you to share all you shared. You are an inspiration and have changed my way of thinking yet I have never met you.

Time to take a close look at your own operation!

I found this book during a time in my life when I was getting over a small insignificant injury. However, I ruled my physical, mental, and spiritual body. This book provided motivation, support, strategies, action, and philosophy to move me past my Rut. If you are looking for a great read, a life manual, new ideas, new philosophy, or just looking to sharpen your results, I would recommend this book.

SO INTERESTING

I was told about this book and did not disappoint. Stay hard!

Loved this book@

After serving 23 years in the US Army, I could relate to every message David Goggins conveyed in the book. Often we do get stuck in our own heads and become our own biggest enemy. I've experienced it time and time again. Reading this book and learning to get out of my own way, will no doubt push me to open up my full potential.

Requirement For Living to The Fullest

This book is the latest addition to the Bible! A true testimony of what we as humans are truly capable of.

Much Needed Wake-up Call

I truly appreciate the raw language and direct, no nonsense, no sugar coat approach from David Goggins. Sometimes I need to give myself a break, but most likely than not, I need a kick in the ass. THANK YOU David Goggins for doing just that. Utmost respect and gratitude to you good sir for your service to our country and for your unwavering conviction and leadership.

It's not too bad. Fastest book I finished in 5 years.

I've been trying to get back into reading for a while now and this is probably the fastest book I've finished in over half a decade. Bought it on the 13th, finished it on the 15th. Here's my honest opinion of the book. If you're after a traditional self-help book, this book isn't for you. It's narrative-drive and autobiographical in style. You get a deep peek into the life that is David Goggins. In a way, it was like reading a novel, except it's about a real person and written by the man himself. The details are raw and real, with no fluff or pandering to the politically correct. Profanity-wise, it's not that bad. Sure, there's a few here and there but it's not on every page and every sentence like how other reviews are making it out to be. The profanity is pulled out where it counts. The lessons in the book are different but similar to other self-help books - except Goggins' story makes them feel fresh. The only real negative thing I felt about the book was that his army career narrative did get a bit repetitive. Yes, he did the SEAL training, then he did a bunch of other ones. But after a while, all the training started to sound the same - hard, designed to break a person and how he moved through them. There was a brief moment of boredom trying to read them but they eventually passed and we moved onto other parts of life narrative. The variety and growth came when he did the different ultras. Overall, I did enjoy the book and it has moved me to reassess myself, what I want from my life and why I do the things I do. I like the no bs kind of language and the lack of fluff that traditionally structured self-help books have.

So damn good!

If you are seeking a book to.give you a mental nudge to hear how to break through !mental barriers - this is it. Plus it is really well.written with adjectives and stories that paint the detailed pictures. Great work!

Wife - And now a Superhero Fan

I bought this audio book for myself and then I bought a copy for my husband. I have been overlooking this book for months, because I was too fearful to listen to the words. I knew this was going to be some tough love type advice. I love superheroes and seeing people succeed under extreme circumstances. Mr. Goggins is a superhero. What we each needed to hear, especially me. I’ve gone from 12% body fat to likely 40%. My arrogance as a student-athlete is why I am here. Basketball has always allowed me to stay fit and to trash talk, but it is no longer my outlet, so I’ve allowed myself to become unfit. What I knew I would love was the work ethic of Goggins. I found myself cheering and sad when he failed. I was sad about the short sections about his divorces from his wives. As a black woman that may shock some folks. I found myself just wanting to see him happy because nothing was easy. I understand what he achieved wasn’t easy as a cop and a black cop that is vocal about police corruption, out to change the system. What I didn’t expect was to see a story that mirrored my husband’s. Oh my husband doesn’t have his military resume, but he’s a Gulf War Vet, a leader, and he too was beaten mercilessly by his father. When Goggins said in the beginning how abuse would essentially shape you into a survivor or a statistic I knew I would finish this book. Mr. Goggins motivated me. I’m only a couple of weeks into my journey to drop 40lbs, but if he can achieve what he did with broken feet, a broken knee cap, I have no excuses. I’m 10lbs down in two week. 🙌 All of the heroes he mentioned also motivated me. My mind is strong in most aspects of my life, but being overweight over the last 6 years of my life ends here. I am embarrassed by it, despite the support of my husband. Being fit and 6 feet tall to now being 6 feet tall with fat that surrounds your belly is hard on your body. I’m ready to take the "souls" of anyone that stand in the way of getting fit. Motivated Wife - Superhero Fan
