Modern-day coaches face the same challenges every day: entitled youth, overinvolved parents, and the community and administration’s expectation for wins. Coaching does not just take a great deal of time; it takes an emotional and physical toll, and coaches need to know they are not the only ones facing these struggles. After over 11 years of coaching, and his own coaching philosophy transformation, J.P. Nerbun felt called to share the hard lessons that could not be found in a book when he started coaching. Calling Up provides an easily accessible and inspiring story as J.P. details the transformative experience of a high school basketball coach named Daniel and his year-long struggle to keep his job while working to become the coach he always wanted to be.
Apart from the entertaining and relatable story, which connects with coaches on a personal level, Calling Up provides coaches with principles based on scientific research and personal experience that explore how people learn, what motivates them, and the human condition. These principles are shared by some of the most highly qualified and successful coaches in sports and J.P. also provides specific tools and explains how those tools are applied within the context of a team. At the end of the day, Calling Up shows coaches not just how to build great athletes, but how to build great people.

Awesome Story and Lessons!
I loved "Calling Up"! I have followed JP Nerbun for a short time, and I have liked the things I have read and heard. "Calling Up" went to a whole new level, though. Great messages and lessons for coaches, yes, but there is so much more to take from this than ways to be a better coach and leader. Great lessons for anyone to become a better version of themselves and live a more fulfilling life. Do yourself a favor and read "Calling Up"!

Recommend for leaders in all walks of life. JP uses basketball to tell the story but applicable for all leadership situations. Easy to read and offers opportunities to write and reflect own experiences.
If You're ready to change, this is the book.
This is a must read for any coach, who is ready to make the change from an outcome oriented coach to a transformational coach. This book gives you the insite on how to go about the process to make the transformation that all coaches strive to achieve fulfilment. On top of that, JP has built a program that will help you with your journey to become the transformational coach and begin leading with love.
Great read
Very good book for an old school coach to read . Helping to move into the modern era
Motivating and inspirational
Once I started reading this book, I couldn't stop. It's uplifting and motivational. And I'm not even a coach. I found the book helpful for my personal life -- in my career, in my marriage, in my parenting.
A great read!
I really enjoyed this. This book contains a lot of useful and powerful tips and strategies within the story of a coach trying to figure things out. I think it is a story all can relate to and learn from. A great read!
Great book
Excellent book for coaches of all levels and sports
Practical Ideas for Coaches!
While there are many excellent resources out there on transformational leadership, this is one of the best books in this area as it not only discusses and describes what you need to do to become a transformational leader, it offers practical ideas for leaders to use. Many resources will talk about the importance of culture, accountability, and empowering leaders, but if you are like me, after reading these different articles and books, you ask yourself: "well how do I do that?" Nerbun does not only describe the values and traits of a transformational leader, but he offers a variety of ideas for coaches and leaders to use with their teams. The book offers excellent examples that the readers can relate to or may have even found themselves in a similar situation in their past, which gives the reader a chance to reflect on their beliefs and method of leadership. While the story focuses on a basketball coach, the values and strategies that Nerbun explains throughout the narrative can be taken and used by any coach or leader. If you are a coach that wants to continue to grow as a leader and empower your athletes as leaders, this is the book for you!
A great read for coaches at any level
Calling Up is a great read for coaches at any level and helps rewrite the narrative of what a successful coach truly looks like. I found much of the book to be very relatable as someone who has experienced many of the same circumstances and situations as the main character. The author provides years of research and wisdom and weaves them into the story, but also provides action items for coaches to implement in their own cultures and systems. JP Nerbun is one of the leaders in the revolution to bring the sports world back to its true purpose: using sports to develop character and enrich the human experience.
A tremendous "how to" book to build a positive and impactful coaching philosophy
Through the lens of Daniel, a near-burnt out high school boy's basketball coach, JP Nerbun takes you on the journey from being a transactional coach to becoming a transformational coach. Chalk-full of insightful antidotes, well-researched ideas for coaching practices, and chapter-by-chapter questions for coaches to stop and reflect on, this is a quick, yet in-depth read for anyone serious about positively changing young people's lives in the coaching profession. As a high school basketball coach for 22 years myself, I have already recommended it for several of my coaching colleagues regardless of sport (it's NOT just a basketball book but a coaching book).

This book takes all the best research and theory about coaching and ties it together.
JP Nerbun has hit a home run with this book. Nerbun creatively weaves together all of the best thinking about coaching. The book is filled with practical activities to cement that understanding and help coaches to make it their own. As an Athletic Director I read it with a group of my coaches this summer. They all agreed it is full of information and tools that would immediately impact the quality of their coaching. One of my coaches who is an avid reader said, "If you can read only one coaching book, Calling Up should be it." Additionally, Nerbun includes sources for his information and recommendations for further reading. Add this to your library today.
Everyone can learn something valuable from this book
This book centers around a basketball coach, but no matter what line of business you are in, you can gain some powerful insights. It is a very well written book that takes the reader through a transformational positive journey that everyone should aspire for in their own life. The lessons are very easy to understand, and are taught in a way that you will remember them long after you finish reading. Don't skip over this book. It is simply amazing, and once you start reading it is extremely difficult to put this book down.
Wish I would have read earlier in my career
This book is exactly what transformational coaches need. The nuggets of applicable information for coaches to use with their teams is endless. JP is an extremely knowledgeable leader who shares all of his lessons in this easy to read book. It's written to coaches and anyone who want to serve others and do things the right way above all else. One of the best coaching culture books I've ever read.
Why do you coach?
Great book to cause you to reflect on why you do what you do. As coaches, we need to think a lot more about the why than the what or how. This book is an easy and engaging read and will get you thinking well beyond the wins and the losses. What impact are you really having on the lives you spend so much time with? How can you be more intentional and not just coach day to day and let happen what happens? This book will help take you, as the coach, on the journey that you need to take your athletes on... but you need to go there first!
Comprehensive Coaching & Leadership Book
A very relatable book for coaches at any level. Easy to read with short chapters categorized into 4 parts that carry well throughout the book. Within each chapter is a "Reflect & Write" opportunity pertinent to the content within the chapter. This was useful for me as an off-season read, as I tried to conceptualize what I would do if given the situation and how our program currently operates. All in all, solid read with a story that connects to all coaches working on becoming a better leader and shaping the future leader.
Fun to read and Easy to put into practice!!
I really enjoyed the storyline that follows this coach through the course of the book. He is given many applicable 'tips' from mentors that help him become a transformational coach. JP infuses his story with real life coaching research and best practices by some of the world's leaders in the area. Great and easy read!! Thanks for writing this book and sharing it!
Calling Up will challenge and transform you as a coach/leader.
This book accurately depicted my struggles as a new head coach. Filled with doubt and questioning my purpose, this book has validated many of the feelings I had and then provided a guide for me to grow and find my purpose. This would be a must read for any coach at any level. There are so many powerful lessons and the questions provided within each chapter helped provide an intentional path to improvement. I am grateful for JP sharing this book and the mentorship he's provided has been invaluable.
Calling Up will make you a better leader and person.
Great book for all coaches and leaders. The book covers the principles of transformational coaching in an interesting and entertaining format. It presents these truths with clarity and provides a formula for moving from transactional leadership to becoming a leader who calls others to a higher level of living and developing a growth mindset. Loved the characters and the journey they take together.
Every Leader should read it!
Calling Up is a perfect book for any coach/leader looking to enhance their practice and find their “Why”. When we learn to lead in a manner that is respectful yet accountable, we see much more growth. This book is a great opportunity to reflect and grow as a person. Easy to read on top of that!
Don't Call People Out, Call Them UP!
Calling Up is an essential read for leaders and influencers in every field! JP Nerbun walks the talk by supporting others on their own unique path to self-improvement and reflection. We all face "mountains" in life and this story will inspire you to keep climbing, no matter what obstacles lie in your way. Leaders today can no longer afford to hold others accountable by calling them out; we must call people up!
A playbook for transformative leadership
This book has quickly become a reference guide for me, much like Dare to Lead by Brent Brown or Inside Out Coaching by Joe Ehrmann. If you lead people or teams, coach, teach or parent, I strongly suggest you grab this book. JP has done a great job telling a story that we can all relate to much like Patric Lencioni or Jon Gordon. The story quickly grabs you and you won’t be able to put it down.
Powerful Story of Transformational Coaching
Great book for exploring so many of the joys and challenges of becoming a transformational coach. The book is full of useful information, practical application, and opportunities for reflection. This will challenge you as a coach, but won't leave you hanging. Lots of great nuggets to improve your coaching and your culture! A great read for new coaches and veterans alike.
Great Resource!
I'm currently an area director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Michigan. Our mission is to see all coaches and athletes in a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. It is critical that coaches understand their "why" in order to be a coach that transforms lives. I have used Calling Up as a resource for coaches that are seeking this. Highly recommended for coaches that are taking this journey.
Great book for any coach/leader!
Read it about a year ago when I ordered it from his website. Liked it so much I order copies for our entire coaching staff. Great read for any coach/leader! Incorporates new ways to reach players in today's world along with ways to involve parents and develop a strong culture. I would highly recommend his podcast too- Coaching Culture, great stuff!
Best book out to help you transform your culture.
This book is incredible! As a coach I could relate to everything that was happening to the main character. It has been incredibly helpful with my coaching and parenting. I would recommend this book to anyone, not only coaches but anyone who would like to improve there relationships.
Highly recommended read!
Calling Up is a wonderful, inspiring read. You aren’t going to find new passing drills, new offensive sets, or defensive strategies. What you will find are ideas, understanding, and inspiration on how to completely transform your coaching perspective, lead your team in a positive way, and help guide and transform the lives of athletes! Highly recommend!
Great Read for Those Leaders Wanting to Make a Difference
The move to being a transformational leadership is a catch phrase in many circles. JP explains how to make the move and why it is so important in our society today. A great read, you will find great nuggets to apply to your own leadership style.
Transformational Coaching and Leadership
J.P. does a great job in this fable going through the process of becoming a transformational coach. There are so many nuggets in this to take home and apply to your own self if you are willing. It's challenging at times and isn't your typical fluffy feel good story, it is real and relatable. I highly recommend this book and the resources that go with it.
