Portraits and texts recover lost queer history: the lives of people who didn't conform to gender norms, from the fifteenth through the twentieth centuries. “A serious—and seriously successful—queer history recovery project.” —Publishers Weekly Katherina Hetzeldorfer, tried “for a crime that didn't have a name” (same sex sexual relations) and sentenced to death by drowning in 1477; Charles aka Mary Hamilton, publicly whipped for impersonating a man in eighteenth-century England; Clara, aka “Big Ben,” over whom two jealous women fought in 1926 New York: these are just three of the lives that the artist Ria Brodell has reclaimed for queer history in

A document of hope

I had had this book for all of five minutes when I ordered two more. These I gave to friends for Christmas— the only gift that rendered us completely silent, and brought Christmas to a pause as we all sat there revertially, turning the pages, on the edge of tears. One of those friends ordered two more copies that night to give to friends, and so the chain continues. It is so rare to see gender-nonconforming lives depicted with such care and love, restored from what history and society might erase. Brodell’s paintings are exquisite, beautifully rendered documents of hope. Give this book to others, and to yourself, if it will make you feel seen. Give it to others, and to yourself, to learn. And give it to understand that history has always held nonconformist lives, and of these, Brodell has both found and made art.

Stunning.

A beautiful set of tiny memorials. People, whole lives, lost to history because they were so deeply marginalized, persecuted, or forced to hide... Ria Brodell restores their dignity but more importantly, gives them back their names. This is a masterpiece of experiential storytelling. I learned about this ahead of the release via Bitch magazine, pre-ordered several copies, and waited around for them to arrive. It was even better than I'd expected. Gave them all away, ordered several more intending to keep one... gave them all away, ordering more now... Thank you for making this, Ria Brodell.

This book makes me so happy! Gorgeously illustrated, extremely well researched stories of historical, real life, AFAB folx with courageous, complex, nonconforming genders. I especially love how the author does not project through an anachronistic, present day languaging lens but rather tries to figure out how the subject would have self represented, however complex that may be. So beautifully real and precious!

Really neat addition to any queer book collection

I love this book! The stories of butch and GNC historical figures are often sad, but it's so important for them to be told. The illustrations are fantastic as well. It's a thin book but the hardcover is gorgeous and well worth the price.

Love this piece of queer history!

Beauitful book

I was so pleasantly surprised by how in depth and well researched this book is. It's an amazing gift for anyone interested in the past of our community and has incredible diversity within the pages. Often the stories are sad and hard to read, but important. The illustrations add a very nice touch and brings the stories to life even more. Love it
