Mark Hunt
`There's more than a few instances in this biography of UFC cult favourite Mark Hunt that make you shake your head in can't-make-this-stuff-up disbelief? - Inside Sport A powerful story of sadness, hope, pride, honour and triumph from the real-life Rocky! Raw, confronting and honest, UFC champion Mark Hunt's inspiring autobiography shows it is possible to defy the odds and carve a better life. Born into a Mormon Samoan family, Hunt details his harrowing early life, his troubled teen years, and his angry youth with no apparent future. After being plucked from an Auckland street fight and dropped into his first kickboxing bout, Mark went on to achieve unprecedented success in Australian and New Zealand combat sports. In an ongoing career that has spanned the globe, Mark Hunt has been in some of the UFC, Pride and K-1's most memorable battles. But in some ways those fights pale in comparison to that which he has overcome out of the ring and cage. As fearless with his opinions as he is in the Octagon, Mark pulls no punches in revealing the highs and lows of his extraordinary life.

Great Read - Must buy for even the most casual MMA fan

What an emotional ride this book was. I started reading it yesterday afternoon and literally was forced to put it down due to other obligations. When I laid my head on the pillow last night I literally thought to myself before going to sleep: "I am going to finish reading that book the minute I wake up" and that is exactly what I did. At times I laughed, at other times I was sad, and at times I was cheering Mark on like it was Rocky vs. Ivan Drago in Rocky 4. Mark doesn't sugarcoat his story and show the ugly along with the pretty. If you are interested in MMA in the slightest then you are going to love this book. Even if you have no interest in MMA I think you would like it too. This book is just SO good. Do yourself a favor: buy it and read it and then leave a comment on my review letting me know your favorite passage. I will end this review with one of mine. Context: Mark and his friend were having a meeting with the head of K1 and some of their staff. They had planned to play more of the videogame Counter-Strike after the meeting. The meeting did not go well. Here is how he described the end of the meeting: "That was that. I asked them to please excuse us, as we had a very important meeting with the some counter terrorists."

A champ for sure

I've been a fan of Mark Hunt's since his K-1 debut so when I saw that he wrote a biography I jumped at the chance to purchase the kindle edition. The story of his life is inspirational and will bring you hope. From his tumultuous childhood where some days he didn't eat and the abuse he and his siblings suffered at the hands of their father is heartbreaking but his life does get turned around. Well worth the read and I look forward to purchasing the hardback version of this book to add to my library.

An absolutely incredible story...

It's hard to begin to do this book justice in a review. I spent most of the day reading it non-stop. It's not only the story of a modern-day warrior, but it also gives an unflinchingly honest look at what Mr. Hunt experienced growing up in a family full of horrific, almost unimaginable abuse. He writes honestly about his subsequent struggles with addiction and violence as an adult, but there is also a lot of hope in his book for anyone who has been stuck in darkness and despair, and who wondered if they could ever make it out again. Mr Hunt has long had my respect as an amazing fighter, and I don't say lightly that he's someone I now look up to as a human being too after reading this book. I'd highly recommend it for fight fans, but also for anyone interested in the very real story of a man's struggle to find peace and hope against all odds.

Awesome Story, A pleasure to read

I became a fan of MMA in the late 00s, so I picked up this book only knowing Mark from his more recent fights in UFC. He comes off as insightful in many interviews, so I was interested in knowing more about how he became the fighter he is. His story is incredibly gripping, it was a pleasure to read. The book is well-written, it does a great job of taking Mark's thoughts and expounding on them. For a hardcore MMA fan, there's little tidbits of behind-the-scenes action that paint a vivid picture of the early days of MMA in Japan and what it's like for a fighter to rise and fall. For everyone else, there's a compelling story of a poor kid with a terrible life who rose to really make something of himself. I even got a little emotional towards the end. I would recommend this book to anyone, and I think it's too bad the UFC can't find a way to come to an agreement with the man because this is a great story for the world to hear.

Packs More Punch than a Mark Hunt uppercut

Ben McKelvey is to be congratulated for emulating and bringing Mark Hunt's fighting style into the writing style in this book. Always going forward, no bulls***, pulling no punches, no guard, chin first with hands done while continually throwing KO packing bombs. In the early chapters, it was painful to deal with Mark's honesty about his childhood years and abusive parents. But in surviving that cauldron of torment and abuse, a champion, a natural fighter was forged. Jaw of steel, no fear of pain, and fists of dynamite - but Mark didn't survive unscathed - he carried the scars of his early abuse which played itself out through his career in his addictions and also his difficulty dealing with weight and training. I particularly enjoyed reading about how Mark handled the many threats from the K-1 and PRIDE management and the funniest story was how Mark was able to outplay PRIDE's yakuza backed boss Nobuyuki Sakakibara when he came to Sydney to attempt to threaten Mark into taking a fight - with Mark outsmarting the arrogant Sakakibara and walking away from that meeting with one of his biggest paydays. All in all, a story that should have broader interest, not just as a fighter's story - but as a story of a man who was able to overcome a brutal upbringing and became a man who can look back and proudly say that most of the important decisions he made in his life were the right ones - none of us makes the right decisions all the time - but Mark can be proud that he had the character to make most of his biggest decisions the right way - when he could have made decisions which would have been ruinous for his life (like choosing to go into organised crrime, dealing with his cheating manager and handling the yakuza and mafia elements in Japanese fight sports in those times). Mark -its often said that the last thing that goes for a fighter is his punch - so I hope you close out your career on your own terms.

Wow. A real fighter in life and in the cage. Miracle Man Mark.

A very compelling and honest story of hurt, pain, and abuse. But also of redemption and triumph. Mark doesn't win every fight in the cage, but God sure helps him win a few outside of it and his God given gifts help him win some inside of it as well. One hell of a journey and one hell of a read

Recommended reading for fans of MMA, sports biographies, and personal triumph over adversity

A great biography of a great man and fighter, and the innumerable battles that he faced to get to where he is. Exemplifies the mantra that success doesn't move in straight lines, and that you can spend your whole life trying to escape your past. This book spans Mark's horrific childhood upbringing, his teen years as a reckless criminal, his ascendant years as a K1 fighter, and his more recent years as a professional, perennial MMA contender. The book features several accounts and photos from Mark's life, and is written in a conversational, engaging style that reflects his personality, beliefs, and grit. Born to Fight is a compelling account of Mark's rugged journey through life, an first-person observational snapshot of early MMA's history, the longevity of self-destruction in the face of success and failure, and triumph in spite of terrible circumstances. I recommend reading this book, and afterwards/during watching some of the fights that Mark mentions. It gave me a greater insight and appreciation of the drama and realities of the book, when I could see the physical reality of what he was describing.

Ignore any criticism.

So good. I read a review where there was criticism about the book having fight scenes. I couldn't disagree more. I remember many of the fights and it was very exciting to see what it was like for Mr. Hunt to prepare for battle, feel the exhilaration of victory, and cope with loss. Also, the reviewer criticized the book for being short. I would again disagree as sometimes a shorter story keeps things simple.

Born to Fight in every sense of the word.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Mark in a professional capacity and he was far from what you'd expect from his upbringing and early days. Rightfully feared in the ring and octagon, he is now a gentleman outside of the office who has refused to allow the ghosts of the past from being the stand up guy he is today. I don't think I'll ever meet a tougher (mentally and physically) man in my life. An inspiration to those who have suffered neglect and abuse from the ones you should be able to trust the most. You don't have to be a fan of MMA to enjoy this book, his story is amazing. Big thanks to Ben McKelvey for putting it together & Mark 'The Super Samoan' Hunt for sharing his story to help others.

True Life Tough Guy

I was a fan of Mark Hunt from watching his fights in K-1 and MMA. Knew nothing about his life story. Inspiring to see someone not trapped by their past, and instead living life with a surprisingly optimistic world view. I hope he wins his lawsuit with UFC.

I loved that Mark was able to find his peace and ...

This was both heart breaking and triumphant. I found it very emotional to read about how much damage someone can do to a vulnerable person in their care. I loved that Mark was able to find his peace and a loving family, but it was also very hard to see him constantly miss opportunities due to his own self destructive tenancies. I know his fight is not over, and I love that! Mark remains one of my favorite fighters in the UFC, but I can't help but wonder what could have been. When all is said and done though, finding your way to peace, happiness and a loving family through the maze of horror that he was presented with is a far more impressive victory than any "titile" could ever be.

Honest and Revealing

From the first page of Mark Hunt's biography you begin to realize that this is about more than fighting in the ring or octagon, it's about the fight for life. His childhood, plagued by constant hunger and abuse could have determined his path as one of destruction and downward spiral, but through fighting he found his resolve. Great storytelling and authenticity. Definitely a page turner.

learn about everything that puts weight behind those fists

A story that I can almost hear in Mark's Kiwi mumble. As a huge fight fan, I loved hearing how Mark came up in street fighting, kickboxing, and then in MMA. All the while he was trying to hold onto his sanity through an incredibly dark childhood and a rough, unstable adult life.

Life Changing

Reading somebody who struggled with such issues as abuse and addiction and still come out on top is an inspirational story, but to see them reach out to the reader as Mark Hunt did in his book is one of the many reasons why he is a real life super hero of mine. Great read!!! Thanks for sharing Mark

Mark Hunt...a living legend of MMA

Gripping story of one of the living legends of MMA. I enjoyed it immensely and literally could not put it down. If you are addicted to MMA and are a fan of Hunt this is a must read.

Fantastic book

Easily one of the best books I've read this year. A great story of triumph over adversity. If you love stories of the underdog or people who have been seen as unworthy or not even in contention at others peril, this is perfect. From horrific beginnings to fame and fortune, then back down and up again, marks story as dana White put it, is one of the most amazing stories in sport. Though Mark is a man of God now, there's no preaching, just a story as raw as Mark ability to fight.

Interesting book

Former K1-champion Mark Hunt tells is his story about his tough upbringing, his life as a streetfighter before becoming a professional fighter, his battles in and out of the octagon, and ultimately his time in two biggest fighting organisations in the world, PRIDE FC and UFC.

Great book

Great book. Definitely recommend

The unbelievable struggles of a great fighter

Fast Read.

Interesting and provocative.

The perfect book any fight fan would love

Full of hope and sadness Mark has lead a life that is one of a kind. I also enjoyed the Australian slang which made the book feel more authentic. A new perspective of the Pride era and even modern era of fighting through the eyes of the Super Samoan himself it is a must read for all fans of combat sports.

Great read

Love the honesty, the never give up attitude, and the belief, and the journey from the start to finish. He had many paths to choose from and admits to choosing the wrong one many times but having the courage to accept it and choose the right one learning from the wrong paths and becoming the man he chooses to be for his family and himself.

An interesting read indeed ...

A very interesting read which leaves one favoring Mark. Here is a man that was given lemons at birth who was somehow able to turn them into lemonade while giving glory to God.

Beautiful life story with many lessons

I'm not really a reader but I finished this book in less than a week. First time I saw Mark Hunt fight was in 2007, I was 17 years old and thought, "Wow this little guy is so strong, so dense, standing up with the deadliest fighters in their prime like Fedor, Cro Cop, and etc." I fell in love with his chill style, power, strength, and stoic attitude. I sent this book to my friend who's in prison and bought a copy for myself. I'm finished reading and glad that I bought it. Mark's story made me tear up and laugh at times. It made me angry for him for the things that he experienced and the protection he never had. I wish I was there to protect young Mark.. Despite his traumatic experiences he provides a Light and Hope throughout his story. I've seen almost all of Mark's fights so it was exciting to read how he felt in the ring. I could see all the punches and opponents he spoke of: Ray Sefo's legendary K-1 Fight, his comeback on Le Banner, walk off knockouts in the UFC. After the crazy life he lives, I see him just chilling and having fun now with this kids. My favorite part of it all.. he just plays video games like Counter-Strike on his computer and streams laughing and enjoying life freely. Safe to say I LOVE MARK HUNT. He is my idol and will always be.

Also a fascinating glimpse of what life was like growing up in South Auckland in the 80's and ...

Mark Hunt's biography is fascinating and insightful. Real suspense at the various trials and tribulations he's faced. Some deep insights into human nature, and lessons from life that we should all take note of. Also a fascinating glimpse of what life was like growing up in South Auckland in the 80's and 90's (it hasn't changed much in my observation), and how the fight game actually works with managers and various hangers on. (more insights into human nature) I read the book very quickly, staying up late to find out what would happen next. Harrowing and ultimately uplifting. A very thought provoking biography on many levels. Really glad I got the book. Bought one for a friend as well.

This book just goes to show you why he is love by so many fans and why he is so ...

I bought the book because I've been a fan of Mark since his Pridefc days and have always respected him in many ways. This book just goes to show you why he is love by so many fans and why he is so resilient as a fighter. EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT A MMA FAN, this book is a great read for any one. It basically describes a tortured child hood, ruff adolescent and adult life, obtaining a dream, trying a new sport and NOT doing well and lastly rising from the ashes to becoming one of the most love fighters on the planet. I can't praise this book enough. Just read it

Couldn't put it down

Great read about what many go through. Brutally honest. I can totally relate to how struggles with the same thing over and over. Too bad it didn't include his latest training where it seemed he turned a new leaf with his discipline and knocking out Silva

Incredible story

This is a beautiful story of hard work and perseverance and I recommend anyone interested in Mixed Martial Arts read this book and follow the rest of Mark's career.

An amazing book by an amazing man and fighter

An amazing book by an amazing man and fighter. "He proved us wrong, he proved everyone who doubted him wrong. He (Hunt) is the greatest story in sports today." Dana White, UFC President. Dana is right Mark Hunt has surpassed every expectation anyone ever had of him. It is a stigma that fighters come (especially great fighters) come damaged backgrounds. Unfortunately in Mark's case it is true. Growing up in an abusive family, where crime was the only way out. Mark did not Martial Arts Sansei to teach him how to fight he knew how to fight. Over the years he had support and help from key people, but one thing never changed anyone anytime. As long as his opponent had 2 arms and 2 legs Mark Hunt knew he could knock them out. Mark is known for his exciting fighting style, and respected for taking on anyone. Though over the years he has learned to make sure they pay him what he is worth. His book and story are every bit as exciting, heart wrenching at time. Marks talks honestly and openly about his success and failures. His demons and the angels. His family/friends and betrayals. Their is a message in the book about being willing to talk about you problems, not giving into the rage of holding everything in. As much as I was a fan of Mark Hunt before reading this book, I have ten time the respect for Mark Hunt the man not just the fighter. This is an amazing story, of not just survival but thriving, and Mark's story is not over yet. "Gammon" get this book now.

Simply brilliant

Mark Hunt has led an extraordinary life and has come so far despite pretty much every odd that exists. This book is excellently put together and gives you an insight into Mark’s journey you may never could’ve imagined. I usually take my time with books but hours flew by like nothing when I read this, I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone - even if they’ve no interest in martial arts and have never heard of Mark Hunt. It’s just a great read, and I’m sure once you’ve read it too you’ll agree 100%. Endless respect to Mark Hunt

Short but sweet

A shorter book than I expected but a good read. I never knew what an absolutely horrific childhood the guy had and it's no surprise he ended up fighting. Wonder how far he could have gone if he could have focused 100%. Very, very honest book.

Hunt this book out

Mark Hunt is one of those rare finds in MMA: a fighter who retains their popularity win, lose or draw. This is undoubtedly down to the fact that Mark is a likeable guy who loves to fight - what more can the UFC ask for? I eagerly awaited this book on pre-order, and read the whole thing in two days. I didn't so much read it as consume it (no Mark-esque weight pun intended). The structure of this book is fantastic. Hunt knows that most of his readers will know him from his UFC fame, and so the whole story is interspersed with UFC details. However, he does take us through his life chronologically, and he has an amazing tale to tell. His childhood was so abusive that his father was sent to jail; he lost hundreds of thousands to gambling, and often didn't take fights seriously. His story is truly inspirational. At times funny, at times sad, all the way through you get the sense that Hunt would be a great mate, and would be very approachable. I've read most MMA fighter's autobiographies, but this is by far the most personal and therefore the most interesting. I would also recommend Randy Couture's book, as he breaks down how he defeated each opponent. With Mark it's simple: if he trained, he won. Buy this book!

Brutal and honest

A brutal and unapologetic memoir. It's unflinching in his stories of abuse to the rise of his profile and addiction. It's great to see how he reinvented himself to be the husband and father that he has become. I thoroughly enjoyed the book from start to finish.

Up there with the best fighter biographies

Honest and intelligent. I especially liked the insight into his feelings about his abuse and his candid description of his own self. More of a book about life than fighting and just generally a cracker. I'm not a UFC fan either!

Great insight to mark and his life.

This book starts with marks childhood and follows his experiences that shape his life. Leading to and including his fight experience and path through pride and ufc. A great read and insight into marks character. A must for any fan

Marko Hunto

It is a rough and tough book with the feeling of a fighter and a human being laid out in words. He is a fighter who has an addiction to gaming machines. He kicks like a mule and breaks legs for a living. Interesting read to show how people can live and prosper without a great start of his life. Good information about MMA and UFC

If you're a fan you must read

i'm a huge fan so when i saw this i had to read. its very honest and lots of his stories from his childhood, i couldnt put it down and mustve read it in one swoop. slightly dissapointed there wasnt much UFC back story but i guess he kept that to a minimum....would be interesting if he was to release it now.

An interesting read.

An interesting read especially concerning his roots and troubled family life, which are the essence of this book, but in terms of MMA content I was left wanting more behind the scenes stories and content.

10 out of 10

Brilliant book by a genuine legend, I literally couldn't put it down.

Extremely honest

Great read! Rarely do you get such a deep insight into a fighters life and Mark’s life is full of events worth reading about

great book

wow what a book the life he lived its a wonder that is came through it all would recomend

Fantastic

You would never know the tough upbringing Mark had or just how lazy he really was. Amazing read but makes me wonder what he could have become if he trained like an athlete.

Beast of a story

Tough and long road he's been on excellently written. Super easy to read and with Marks personality all over it. Great stories from Japan, now I see what Rogans been talking about all these years, and a big slice of MMA history

Excellent

Amazing honest read!

As a long time fan of the man himself I was kicking myself leaving it so long to read this masterpiece! It was everything I wanted it to be and more. He cut the rubbish and told everything how it was from his past to where his future may lay, must read for any mark hunt fan!

Raw, rough and real, one of those books you can't put down. Simple but effective, Born to fight, fight to survive. Tick it off the bucket list.

Addictive!

Brilliant read. I was thoroughly addicted!

Wow!

Truly a great warrior like ancient times

I am big big fan of mark hunt , after reading this book I like him even more , a true warrior a real life hero what we fantasie he lives it , incredibly strong individual from a life of great pain and sorrow to victory , if I am half as strong as him I'll be very happy most important thing is he has given his life to Jesus .... It's a must read you'll enjoy it like a movie

Confronting and real

This is a brutal story, The first part is very confronting and sad, but following Marks wild stories is amazing and inspiring. He also details each of his major fights and how he felt before during and after. Very profound.

100% ehrlich, 100% Mark Hunt

Great autobiography

Wow, I had no idea how troubled Mark Hunt 's childhood was. Even non mma fans might enjoy this book as it is a remarkable story of a man surviving a terribly abusive childhood to eventually become a successful fighter. Great book, very honest and hard to put down. Highly recommended.

Interessantes Buch über einen interessanten Kämpfer

Interessantes Leben eines tollen Kämpfers und netten Menschen. Lesenswert.

Proper good read

Would recommend to people interested in the fight game and anyone else as it’s a properly good read . Goes through his whole life’s history which has amazing highs and lows. Definitely worth 5 stars.

Eye opening story

Sad facts from his childhood but still a great story. I'm from NZ myself so can get my head around the struggles of south Auckland a little easier than some. Well worth a read, I'm not much of a reader myself but follow Mark Hunts career so had to read this while I was on holiday and couldn't put it down, was disappointed for it to end! Buy it people

Crazy Story

Read this story in two sittings. I was hooked from start to finish. Follows Marks story from a horrific beginning through his fight career and gives a bit of insight into what makes the super somoan tick.

Insightful Read

Great book regardless of your interest in UFC/MMA. What a legend. Harrowing childhood which is upsetting to think patents can treat their children in such a way, but great to see Mark make the most of his talent and opportunities.

honest and thought-provoking from one of MMA/K-1's best stars!
