Black's Law Dictionary, Standard Ninth Edition

Whether you are a law student, paralegal, legal secretary, law clerk or a licensed attorney, you need the Black's Law Dictionary. It contains the definitions of many obscure words which may appear in older case law. It is always a good idea to have a good law dictionary when you are researching an issue, writing a brief or drafting a motion.

For current or future law students Black's Law Dictionary is an essential reference book for your library, and as one of my professors told me, "if you don't want an abridged education, don't buy the abridged version." You'll also gain access to an online version of Black's through any Westlaw account, but it's one version behind, and the UI isn't as easy to navigate. I think the hardcover dictionary is worth the money. Finally, a word about the Deluxe Edition: no. I can't see paying almost double for what it offers. My advice is to stick with the Standard Edition.

The Oxford series on Constitutional Law, SCOTUS, etc., are wonderful tomes. However, Black's would be the one book if there could be no other in your library. It provides the authoritative definition of whatever you might be looking up;but also is the sort of book you can randomly open, read and learn on literally any page. In some ways, it is more an encyclopedia than just a dictionary. Weighty in every sense of the word, it's not the book for your flight to Paris, but it will help pass many wonderful hours at home or in the office "reading the law".

I purchased this as a work reference. I knew that it would be more comprehensive than the pocket edition, but was surprised at how complete this law dictionary actually was. It has exceeded my expectations, which were set pretty high to begin with. My advice to anyone who is contemplating getting the pocket edition of Black's Law Dictionary is to go ahead and spend the extra money on the standard edition. It is well worth the expense, and you will congratulate yourself in the future for it. Really.

If you are in law school, and poor like me because you are paying your way, take out an extra loan, call mommy, grandma, whoever, sell some plasma if you have to but it will be a great resource that will be very beneficial in translating legalese to normal speech.

If you are in law school, you have to get this book. I have literally used it on every assignment I have had so far. I had the older version but I decided to purchase the newer one and it is worth it’s weight in gold. It is high quality and bound nicely. Will recommend to any law student, officer, or legal staff.

It's a nice addition to the collection of books I have for lawschool, but since buying it, I wish I would have put it off. I tend to use the Black's Law search in WestLaw way more and I have friends that use digital version. The desktop version is just taking up space.

It is the dictionary to have - this one is always in my office and it is actually used. The internet provides answers but some people, including me, need real books. Also, this is the black letter law dictionary and attorneys need to be precise in language. This helps.

this is a very useful reference for any law-related terms i may need to look up, but to be honest i have my computer or phone with me when i am near thei book, so i really don't need it since i can look up any term. for this reason it is not necessary, but still well-made. the the lack of portability of this book makes it obsolete.

Yes, you can find much of this on-line, however, that is tremendously inconvenient when you are working on your laptop. All the squinting, multiple windows, and toggling back and forth is slower than simply keeping this dictionary near your work area.

Using for legal class

I bought the Black's Law Dictionary as a giift to my daughter who is a Para Legal, personal assistant and office manager at a Tampa, Florida Law firm. She completed one year of Law studies at Nova University. At that time I had bought the paperback version of this essential book of definitions. She now has a well paying job at a law firm that handles all the complications of probate and attends night school at Cooley Law at their new campus in Tampa. As a gift for being accepted at Cooley and to help at the office I bought her the Hardcover Black's Law dictionary. It is more definitive and deep. She was thrilled and very happy. To me that made it worth every penny. Also Amazon's price was ten dollars less than elsewhere. One of the things that helps regular people to be smart people is the reference libraries that they have access to. This is definitely one of those books. A.P.L.

I had Oren's Dictionary of Law and it just did not cut it. I had to search online for terminology for my Pre Law Classes. Black's has made it so I don't have to do that anymore.

Not having a law background, this book is a keeper for those times you need to understand more than just a regular definition of a word. Always have this by my side if I have to write my own legal papers or understand that of another.

The best Dictionary for law study and practice. Great for USA and foreign students. Great tool to gain knowledge in different specifics terms of law. Zero transportable. You have to use it just at home.

The hard copy edition is an asset to any legal professional or student's library. It is great reference material that comes in handy. The hard copy is a bit too heavy to carry with you but makes an excellent edition to your library.

Although the internet makes this particular desk reference less appeasing to upcoming lawyers, I find it hard to believe than any student and/or lawyer in every situation would have no use for it. Would you rather answer a question in an interview by referencing the dictionary or looking at your smart phone? Do you enjoy staring at a computer screen for as many reasons as possible? I myself prefer to take notes by hand and read a physical books. I like to leave the computer off and open the dictionary for answers. I also like looking at entries around the word I am looking up. You won't get that from the internet. Although, growing numbers of people prefer not use physical books, I don't think lawyers and students will always have the luxury of access digital references nor will it always be appropriate to do so.

Words matter. The meanings of words matter even more. This is a great book that shows just how the meanings of words stemming from differing realms impact our lives and the society in which we operate.

This was a waste of my time and money. Any previous edition is a better resource and reference.

This is a good dictionary. I bought it as a law student, and I don't use it. With free access to West Law it is not worth the money.

I use it often. When I need to prepare exam ready definitions and to learn terms and issues, I rely rather heavily on the Black's Law Dictionary.

Wrapping up my first year and have had it by my side the whole time. I could not live without it!

Great resource however if I knew that I could have looked every thing up online I would have never purchased it.

I usually have this dictionary next to me when I'm studying. I rarely take it with me, as it's huge....But nonetheless I would recommend this version or at the very least the pocket edition if you're about to start law school. It's very helpful for words that you don't know, and words that you thought you knew until you realized they had a different meaning. You can get the definitions on Westlaw, but I find that I study better if I don't have to get on the internet to do my work. Buy it. It's an investment.

Excellent source of information for the mysterious world of law where the commonly used meaning of a word is not the same as the legal meaning.

I translate many legal documents from Brazilian Portuguese to English. This dictionary will allow me to be sure that the meaning of the legal term in English that I find is appropriate to the context. It has very full comments on terms.

this is fine but after ipurchased this I realize black's law dictionary is available online through westlaw and lexisnexis and probably as an app as well.

This dictionary in particular is quite sturdy. The quality is amazing. I feel as if it's a much needed resource for studying the law. Invest the extra money in this exceptional product.

What got my mind into studying the law, was the nature of contracts and agreements; Ultimately, the meeting of minds, or acting principles (agents) in the capacity of things, over other things of value. Assuredly, all weights and measures in things considerate, in uniform rank and file, based upon its form, and function. Blacks law serves as a great tool in understand words and terms and book is bloody huge! Some words describe a word with a word is my only draw back, if the truth be known. Either than that, for the price of it? Its worth it. If I had enough dosh, I'd get the black's Law 5th edition. Until then, the Standard 9th Edition will indeed do. :)

I do a lot of legal translations from Norwegian to English. I find Black's an invaluable tool with which to work, and which gives me an accurate description of legal concepts and terms. I have worked with Black's for a good number of years, and would not be without the Dictionary in my extensive library. Thank you for carrying Black's, since my usual bookshop in Norway could not find it on their lists.

Black's is absolutely necessary. I prefer full version over condensed versions b/c often times what you need is not included in smaller versions.

Other comprehensive dictionaries, such as Ballentine's, stopped publishing a print version decades ago. However, Aspen Publishing, a leading publisher of law books, has recently published a comprehensive but expensive law dictionary that may give Black's some competition. West's list price for the standard edition is $79 and $130 for their deluxe one. What do you get for the extra $51? You get thumb indexing and not much else. This is not exactly a luxury characteristic of reference books: most college edition English dictionaries have this feature and they cost less than $20. You also get a binding which West calls "faux leather." West claims this makes the deluxe edition more durable. The front and back covers are certainly thicker or puffier on the deluxe edition, but the skin of the binding appears no more durable than on the standard edition. Only someone with serious visual impairment might think the binding was imitation leather, let alone real leather. For example the spine looks and feels like cardboard. On a bookshelf the book will not impress either your clients or friends with your good taste. At the time of this review the deluxe edition was available only from Amazon market sellers, some with prices exceeding the list price. If West wants to sell a deluxe version of Black's in a future edition they should take a hint from the comprehensive medical dictionaries and include a CD or DVD with meaningful extras. For example, Dorland's Medical Dictionary includes a disc with a spell checker and an e-book version with both their standard and deluxe editions. Their deluxe edition, which retails for about $99 on Amazon, is apparently real leather. But the Dorland dictionary has to compete with the Stedman and the other big medical dictionaries, while West still has a grip on the comprehensive law dictionary business. I wouldn't expect a disc of extras from West anytime soon with any of their dictionaries.

It came on time in the mail in the condition it was promised to be. A few days later i thought i might have to return it, so i emailed the seller to ask if and how i could, and he replied in the next few hrs- they seemed nice, and told me i could.... I didn't end up having to return it, but it was nice to know that i could (and that I wouldn't get any trouble from the seller). I recommend this seller and will definitely buy from them again.

Picked up my Black's Law Dictionary from the post office today and felt like a kid in a candy store. The arrival time was well before expected and the dictionary is in practically perfect condition for more than half its original cost. This was a well needed resource and I am extremely pleased with this purchase. I would say the best I have made from Amazon thus far, bar none!

Finally got around to updating my Black's. Must say, it is well worth it and then some. If you have not updated, this is worth the money. You'll be pleased. My '68 edition is, well, you know. Recommened.

Because the book was hard bound, he was not permitted to recieve it. So it was confiscated and he will not have access In other words, the officials kept the book for themselves. :-(

I didn't check all 1900+ pages of this Black's Law Dictionary but now, 2 weeks past the allowed 30 day return period, I find my book is missing pages 113 - 208. Buyer beware! I called the publisher, West/Thomson Reuters, 1-800-344-5008. They will not back their product - another buyer beware red flag. The book was bought on Amazon,NEW, 7 weeks ago. I have my receipt. I wonder how many other Thomson Reuters books are out there missing pages? They don't seem to know - apparently they do not have a Quality Assurance department. Bottom line - they don't back their products, even when defective. '

I don't know any sane person who would state Black's Law Dictionary is not an undisputed winner, because that's what it is. Essential too.

The book was delivered in excellent conditions. Even though I live in the southern part of the continent, the book looks as if I bought it in the nearest library! It is really useful for me, as I am working on international law and I need constantly to search the definitions of certain words, and internet sometimes can't give me an accurate answer to certain terms.

Every great lawyer I know has one of these laying around the office and is a must for any law student. Delivery was very fast and the book is top notch quality.

The English language changes over time. Were that to be allowed in the English of Law and especially with legal terms would be equivalent to changing the Law. That must never be. These modern Editors have taken unjustifiable liberties with the definitions of some words in these newer version of Black's. For example, historically a driver is defined, in older Black's and others, as "One employed in conducting..." This version defines as driver as "A person who steers and propels a vehicle." While this later definition may be turn in street English it was never the intent or meaning in Legal English. To use this newer definition would abridge the unalienable rights of the individual. This is only one example and it alone is really disgusting. Keep or look for an older edition Law Dictionary (6th or older).

Just what I needed. It is pricey but this is the best law dictionary out there. This is the holy grail of law dictionaries.

It's just what I was looking for. Very complete and appropriate. Recommended for those who are studying careers related to law.

bing you cannot give it uplacks law dictionary is a book to have in your possession at all times. you can find out alot of things that you would'nt even believe,it will give you the definition of any word. for instance, it shall , shall not. never, will not, maybe, signature, and alot more things than you can imagine. also this book goes hand in hand with the uniform commercial code. alot of people do not know what the ucc is. but i do. it protects my friedoms, speechees, assembly, travel, fishing, hunting, etc.when you learn about the ucc, then you will understand blacks dictionary. the ucc rules over statutory,equity,marshall law, and admirailty. it comes under the common law. pull up the anderson eddition of the ucc. you want book #1. go to ucc 1-207, and 1-103. read very closely. also use the constitution of the united states. and by the way we have 2 united states. we have the federal united states, which is washington d.c.. the other united states is the connential united states. its easy, i pledge alligence to the the united states of america, and to the republics for whiches stands, one nation under god indivisible with life, libert, and the pursuit of happiness. once you start learn you cannot give it up. its food for thought. and you cannot get enough. i wish you well on your adventure into the truth of our country. the visual man 7.

This means a) removal or suspension of all laws making it punisheable for a person to have miscarriage. b) removal of the Extraterrestrial Exposure Law. c) removal of any laws that increase the probability of a kangeroo court to happen in some country , i.e. somewhere in the U.S. , Russia , Australia , Iraq, and so on. Example; make it illegal to force people to vote in some country , i.e. by removing a law which already exist making it illegal not to cast a vote.

Finally got around to get one of these I am totally pleased

The editor of the book takes time to explain why he's taken a lot of the definitions and details out since he's been in charge, since the 6th Edition. He doesn't really convince me that his decision was a good one, or by his reasoning, but I suppose there's no point in being an editor if you can't put your mark on things. He says he put more Latin in, but if I wanted more latin, I would get a latin dictionary. Having said this, the book is fairly large and for under £60, it does look rather impressive on a book shelf, and does have a vast amount of definitions in. If you cut the centre pages out, you could burrow a couple of cans of Special Brew in there, and give yourself a nice surprise when you got round to looking at it at a later date. One improvement is the arrangement of the Latin maxims in the rear, as opposed to being intermingled with the generalized alphabeticized body of definitions. I am glad I bought the book, but comparing various definitions to the versions prior to his editorship, I have to say there has been a sharp downward step. I would still recommend the book, and will be sure to use it and - the most important thing - attain valuable usage from it. It is a good buy. Buy it, you won't be disappointed. Do not get the paperback. It is very heavily abridged.

Anyone who lives in any society where the rule of law is enforced, this dictionary is an absolute must. Not only for reference, but simply reading dictionary itself increase one's understanding of legal terms oftentimes misused or misunderstood. Absolutely recommended.

i use it for translations when I need to understand a principle. So far I found everything I needed to find. well explained, and easy to use. Perfect companion.

Disappointment - Bought to get newer terms (internet related) since my 6th edition. Found to be not as rich in offerings of definitions such that I still refer back to the 6th edition to see if better definitions are provided. Would not recommend buying it, however what other choices does one have.
