Step Back in Time to the Bronx, New York, 1972!

Being Brothers is an effecting and nostalgic trip back in time to the 1970's in New York. The slang, music, and pop culture referenced in this story did not differ appreciably from my own childhood experience in California, so the read evoked many of my own memories of that time. This is a book about brothers, friendship, family, sibling rivalry, and first love that has surprisingly little in the way of plot. Rather, this is more of a slice of life, focusing on location, time, and characters. The primary action that does take place is on the Little League playing fields. It is a testament to the skills of the author that though I am NOT a fan of baseball, nor am I fond of reading stories in the form of a script, I enjoyed this read very much!

An Evocative, Nostalgic Look at A Bronx Enclave Untouched by the Tragedies of the 1970's

The year is 1973 Large portions of the Bronx Below the Cross Bronx Expressway from Andrews Avenue in the West, to Hoe Avenue in the East, are burning, with buildings holding over 300,000 people ultimately falling prey to the fires Tens of thousands of people are leaving the neighborhoods along the Grand Concourse and throughout the Northwest Bronx in a panic, heading for Co-Op City and the suburbs, producing a dramatic change in the racial composition of those neighborhoods The Third Avenue El is being knocked down and Kool DJ Herc is holding parties in the community center of 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, which many see as the dawn of a new musical form of hip hop But few, if any of these events appear to have an impact on the lives of the people portrayed in Mike Delucca's beautifully written, evocative new book, part novel, part screenplay, part philosophical intervention, set in the Throgs Neck/Pelham Bay section of the East Bronx, a neighborhood where children play street games and ride their bikes without fear, where parents send their children to the deli or pizzeria on errands without worrying whether they are going to get shot or assaulted, where little league baseball thrives under adult supervision, producing players who become stars in high school, college, and even the pros, where young men spend their time polishing their Trans-Ams and Corvetttes before joy riding down the street, and where innocent kisses among pre-adolescents become the stuff of memory. Mike Delucia describes this neighborhood atmosphere with loving care and he is not exaggerating. The Fordham students I taught who came from Throgs Neck in the 70's told similar stories. Where I part company with the author is in his nostalgia for those times. which he articulates in philosophical reflections by the narrator on the superiority of 70's music to that of today, and the corrupting influence of electronic devices on the youth of today As an historian of the Bronx, I find it hard to view the early 70's a golden age for the borough At most a third of the Bronx was living the way he describes, and the neighborhoods where that atmosphere prevailed were ones where private homes predominated, and which remained racially exclusive The other two thirds of the Bronx, which was largely a borough of apartment dwellers, was living in turmoil and fear. Their view of the early 70's will be far less romantic Mike Delucia captures the neighborhood atmosphere of Throgs Neck/Pelham better than any author I have ever read. But I would be more cautious in drawing philosophical generalizations from that experience than he is! His loving portrait of the community in which he grew up should not be seen as A Bronx tale, not THE Bronx tale.

This book is as refreshing for the kids of the 1970's, as Grease was for the kids of the fifties.

I purchased Being Brothers as a holiday stocking stuffer for my dad. He grew up in the Bronx and has told me dozens of stories about growing up there, so I thought he'd like it. As I leafed through the book, I found myself getting caught up in this tale of sibling rivalry. Being a teacher and having siblings allowed me to easily immerse myself in a story that was just as relatable to me, a child of the suburbs, as it would had I grown up where my father had. Long story short, my "quick skim" through the first chapter ended on page 87 with the main character (Jackie) being targeted by the school psycho and getting invited to a spin the bottle party. Had wrapping presents and holiday obligations not intervened, I'm sure I would have finished this "must read" adventure in one sitting. As I reluctantly wrap this book/script for my dad, I look forward to seeing how this intoxicating trip down memory lane ends right after the holidays. Pamela Dunne I received Being Brothers as a Christmas gift from my daughter with her verbal caveat, "Read it quick and give it back to me as soon as possible." After reading this joyous trip down memory lane I can see why she wanted it back so quickly. If you grew up in New York City or just wished that you had, this book was as refreshing for the kids of the 1970's, as Grease was for the fifties. Catholic school, baseball cards, little league, first kiss, the nuns, the baseball players, the daily mis-adventures, the music, it's all there to remember and enjoy. Being Brothers is a great read for anyone, young or old. At its core it's a love story for anyone who has ever been a part of a family and remembers the highs and lows, as well as the good times and bad. It's funny, irreverent and touched my heart in ways I hadn't imagined. It was by far my best Christmas gift and my daughter is finishing it as I write this, probably with a lump in her throat and a few tears in her eyes. I urge you to read this book as soon as you can! With appreciation, Pam's Dad

Being Brothers a gift of my childhood.

The literary Titan’s review was on point for me. Reading Being Brothers brought me back to a time growing up in the Bronx with my brothers. I felt all of my senses being activated when in reality it was only my sight and touch that were engaged. Through Mike DeLucia’s descriptiveness, I felt as though I was once again eleven years old back in the Bronx. What a joy it was to reconnect with cherished childhood memories. Feeling the loving touch of a parent, the weight of the bat in my hands, the glove that needed to be broken-in and to play catch, the splintered stick to play stick ball, all bring me back to a time in my life that resonates with fondness. The sights the Bronx, the stores on Morris Park Avenue, St. Raymond’s Cemetery, the baseball fields, playing all the street games, coming home when the street lights went on during the school year. Hearing the music, American Pie still one of my favorite songs, the theme songs you heard as the TV shows were starting to get you excited to sit and watch as a family back then. The vernacular used at the time. Little league games the sound of a strike and then there was the sound of the ball meeting the bat hearing CRACK and the cheering of parents for their sons. Smells of the donuts and rolls from the bakery that my dad bought home every Sunday after mass,. The Italian delis the cold cuts and the smell of cheese as you walked into the store seeing the provolone logs hanging over the counter. Taste was my mom’s meatballs. Egg cream sodas from the candy shop on the corner sitting at the counter drinking the cold creamy chocolate drink. If you look in my cabinets you will find a bottle of u-bet syrup in there. Mike thanks for bringing me down memory lane. So many tenderhearted memories came alive as I read Being Brothers , you really are a gifted writer. I can’t wait to see the movie and maybe even the making of the movie as I travel home from work.

Back to a Time of Connection, Engagement

Being born and raised in the Bronx and experiencing my early life there in the 1960s & '70s provided an instant connection to the story, Being Brothers, vividly detailed by Author, Mike DeLucia. The perspective he outlines in his foreword is especially significant - seeing that era as the last before a key and somewhat tragic turning point in our societal evolution into the Computer Age and immersion into its virtual forms of reality. Mike reminds us that not very long ago, we played in the sun and open air, we talked and listened, fully engaged with one another, made pledges, shook hands to seal them... his story of brotherhood, family, the Neighborhood, is a nostalgic read for those of us who lived it and an enjoyable piece of storytelling for anyone! Thanks Mike! - Rich Rethorn

Mike DeLucia's BEING BROTHERS reminds us that through the highs and lows the bond remains

Author Mike DeLucia is able to tell a great story. All of his books that I have written have used sports as a way of telling a deeper story of family, togetherness and teamwork. That is definitely the case with BEING BROTHERS. It's a book about connections, conflicts as well as the things that unite us. Love how through the brothers we are reminded of what really matters, through the good and the bad. This book shows that no matter what comes our way we can find a way to get through it together. Sometimes a memory or a special event will be just the trigger needed to move us in the right direction. A great story by a talented storyteller, BEING BROTHERS shines as one of Mike's best pieces of work---and that is saying something.

BEING BROTHERS...A TRIP IN TIME BACK TO WHEN LIFE WAS NOT SO COMPLICATED

I just finished & really enjoyed reading BEING BROTHERS written by a fellow Bronxite & alumni of St. Benedict School, Mike DeLucia. I am not usually one to sit & read a book from cover to cover. I was totally captured by this prize winning literary work of art. This book took me way back in time to growing up in the Bronx in the 70s where life was wholesome & simplicity was just a way of life. The author mentions various places that were actually part of my own life experiences & his descriptions are spot on! BEING BROTHERS is the story of boys growing up in an Italian close knit family. Going to Catholic school & the fear of the nuns disipline added to the authenticity of the era. Sibling rivalry, friendships & playing outside was just the way we lived in the 70s before the Computer Generations took over. There is not enough I can say about this masterpiece! It was my honor to read this book & I only wish it was longer! Check it out (his other books as well) on Amazon & even check it out the audio version read by the author! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The memories of my youth came flooding back !

Just finished reading a very entertaining book this weekend, written by author Mike DeLucia. Such an amazing tale of days gone by, and the adventures of being young. While I was reading this book, I couldn't help but feel like I was taking a trip back in time. I was immediately flooded with memories of growing up in The Bronx, and of all of the friendships that I had from those days. Plus anyone who mentions a Planet of The Apes film in their story, will always get my attention ! Mr. DeLucia has such an inviting way of writing, so that I was quickly invested in each character, and couldn't wait to see where they were going to end up. I thoroughly enjoyed this book , and I can't wait to see what his next project might be !

Riveting story

Finally a beautiful story that is so relatable to our past. When you need a heartwarming meaningful story that warms your heart, this book is for you. I recommend this book to everyone who needs to feel complete.

Back to the Bronx

Growing up in the Bronx I was instantly pulled into the story. This is a well written book which I found hard to put down. I loved the nostalgia which brought back many fond memories of the Bronx. This book has it all and I highly recommend it. I would love to see this made into a movie!

A nostalgic journey...

Reading this book was like taking a little journey back in time. I did not grow up in the Bronx but my grandmother lived on Morgan Avenue in 1972 and we visited often. The kids I knew from that neighborhood are so much like the kids that populate this book. Being brothers is a wonderful story, and well worth the time it takes to read it. I don't normally like reading scripts but in this case the format works well. I became lost in the story and forgot I was reading a script, instead of watching that internal movie that the best stories project on the screen of your imagination. As far as I'm concerned, this story ticks all of the boxes. The characters are engaging, the story is enjoyable and immensely readable, and the author clearly knows the time he is writing about. Being Brothers is a winner!

Being Brothers took me back to the time when I was growing up in the 70's.

I just finished reading my third book by Mike Delucia...Being Brothers. This book takes place in the Bronx and tells the story of brothers, but it took me back to the time when I was growing up in another New York City borough with sisters and cousins and to the forgotten, but treasured, simple life we experienced back then. Being Brothers is highly recommended for all, but especially for anyone who grew up in the 70's or for anyone who is interested in knowing about those days. This book makes you smile as it reminds you of the little things that we took for granted so long ago. It brings back a lot of funny and happy memories of yesteryear...some that have even been forgotten until Mr. Delucia reminds you of them in his story. Thanks again for another great read, Mike. I look forward to your next book.

A very well done nostalgic look back in time.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this nostalgic account of what life was like growing up in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx. So spot on with attention to detail. I recall riding my bicycle to softball practice with my bat laced through my glove. Thank you so much for taking me back to times I hold so dear. Very well done. Congratulations.

Excellent read

I absolutely LOVED Being Brothers! It brought me back to a time and place that anyone who grew up in The Bronx and during this time period, could definitely relate to. The characters were REAL and true to life. Probably your friends, brothers or neighbors. I highly recommend this wonderful, somteimes funny, sometimes sad story. WELL worth it! Thanks, Mike Delucia for bringing back poignant memories of a very special time in my life! Margaret A.

Our book club members loved this book. We encouraged everyone to buy book for family members.

The book had humor, compassion and a wonderful portrait of an Italian family from the Bronx. Definitely a must-read and would be terrific if made into a movie. Great story for the whole family. Mike DeLucia is a gifted writer and humanitarian.

Being Brothers hits a home run.

Close your eyes. Think back to the things that shaped you and your siblings today…Puberty…Recess…Baseball…Nuns…Discipline…Jump rope…Bazooka Joe. Who can forget Mr. Softee? Being Brothers is “The Bronx Tale that grows up”and never forgets the way back home…Mike hits a home run with this!

Wonderful nostalgic book. An easy read.

This is a well written sentimental book illustrating The Bronx, NY 1972. Mike DeLucia brings the characters alive through the family D'Amato. About 2 brothers who were typical of brotherly rivalry and love. A much simpler intimate time of growing up within a loving family household. You meet the neighborhood kids the bullies. the popular baseball players. It was an easy read. I could not put the book down. I would recommend this book to anyone that want to relive the joy of your childhood if u grew up in NYC in the "70's. And if you did not ,and want to know about how much we cherished growing up during that time read this book. I wish I could give it more stars.

What a wonderful trip down memory lane...

This book was EXCELLENT. Having grown up in the Bronx, I certainly identified with the main characters. The words we used, the way we thought, the landmarks were all SPOT ON. Quick read, left me missing those days and wanting more. I will definitely read this author's other titles. ENJOY a blast from the past (and have Phil Rizzuto call the play, like it says in the book!)

Realistic account of life in North East Bronx

Since I grew up in this neighborhood the book was a must read. I intended to read 50 pages or so, but became so engrossed, I finished the book in one sitting. The pace flows and is so easy to read. In the pre-tech era, we had dozens of friends and played in the streets until dusk. Now, I will send the book to a friend in Texas who grew up across the street from me in those special times.

GREAT BOOK!

I really enjoyed this new book by award-winning author Mike DeLucia. It was like a trip down memory lane in the 1970s. The Bronx, Catholic school nuns, boys playing sports, baseball cards, getting into all sorts of trouble (which sometimes had me falling out of my chair laughing), and the love and loyalties between families, relatives and friends. Even when things weren't rosy and arguments broke out, the love and respect was always there, they'd forgive and forget, and things went back to normal. I loved the screenplay within the book concept, and what the author was going through while writing and proofreading it. I felt like I was actually there living it. So much fun!

A must read for all Generation X

A fantastic page turner of two brothers growing up in the Bronx prior to the technology boom. I love how the author used baseball as an analogy and included the warm family unit and what city life was like in the 70's. As a person who grew up in the Bronx, this book put a smile on my face as I recalled the days of bike riding, playing sewer to sewer stick ball, hide and seek, great friendships, and just wonderful childhood memories. The bond between brothers and the authors writing style pulled me in and kept my interest until the very end of the story. A true page turner and a must read!! Great job Mr. DeLucia.

Great book!

If you are a child of the 70’s, or not, if you have raised a child in the 70’s, or not, if you are a fan of baseball, or not, and if you wanted to know what life was like in the 70’s, you will love reading BEING BROTHERS by author Mike DeLucia. The book drew me in so vividly that I was able to envision what I was reading. The characters were so relatable, I could have known them. The book’s length was perfect for me. If you read BEING BROTHERS and enjoy Mike’s style of writing, you may want to check out his other books.

I loved ‘Being Brothers’!!

Being Brothers is a trip down memory lane. If you were a 70’s kid, you will thoroughly enjoy this book! The way Mike DeLucia describes the times, set in the Bronx, makes you feel like you are there. From the corny lines young boys would say back then, to describing the crazy myths that young minds believed. I actually laughed out loud at some parts. The story is about young boys growing up, going to catholic school and sharing their love for baseball. Two brothers that had a love/hate relationship and he also touches on the innocence of young love. This is definitely a “feel good” book. I highly recommend.

Great read!

As with his other book, Mike DeLucia hits another home-run with this one! What a great book, it automatically brings the reader back to a simpler time (I don't envy this generation, they have no idea what they are missing). Loved the nostalgia of being brought back to the age of innocence and friends and playing outside, playing ball, really just being a kid and not coming home until you heard your mother yell for you or until the street lights came on at dusk. Loved his baseball analogy to focus on the importance of family and life. Highly recommend it ... it just makes you feel good.

Good ole times during the ’70s

I loved Real Brothers! It depicts a time of innocence and simplicity. It gives you a glimpse of what city life was like during pre internet, pre cellphone days, pre bike helmet days which is unimaginable in today’s world. Your childhood days were spent outside hanging with friends, playing ball, riding bikes, making go carts. If you weren’t outside playing then you were home sick. Although those days are gone forever Real Brothers can either bring you back home or it can introduce to you life before video games and Facebook/Instagram took over. It’s a feel good book and you just want to read over and over again!!

A Heartwarming story of days gone by

It always comes down to friendships, loyalty and most importantly, family. This book encompasses all three in a "coming-of-age" story, no doubt, based on some real life incidents in the author's youth. The characters, sights, sounds and smells came to life in a well-written, heartfelt, thoughtful and endearing story that I didn’t want to see end. This needs to be a movie. Just saying... 😊

Great read

I picked up this book from a recommendation of a friend. In short, I loved it. The story of a writer writing a screenplay of a fictional character growing up in the Bronx in the 1970’s. I was instantly pulled into the story and stayed through the end in one sitting. For a book to draw me in like that and not let me go (or want to go) says a lot about the author. Delucia is a natural story teller. I highly recommend taking the trip back to the 1970’s Bronx and experiencing the thrill of growing up.

Wonderful Page-Turner

Mike DeLucia's "Being Brothers" is a book filled with nostalgia, lovable characters, and a winning story line. In his story within a story within a story, DeLucia carefully crafts images of an era we won't see again. His vivid descriptions of both characters and settings invite the reader to be totally immersed, even to be another character in a neighborhood reminiscent of so many in those bygone days. I, for one, am crossing my fingers "Being Brothers" will be developed into a film. I'll be first in line!

Loved the detail!

Growing up in NYC (Queens) the youngest of four kids (two of them brothers) I could once again see in my mind's eye every detail the author creates in this exquisitely written book. It's a wonderful coming of age story centering on one of the great past times of our youth - baseball. It recalls a time before smartphones, video games and every other diversion in the world, when adventure could be found right outside your front door. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Mike Delucia does it again

Mike Delucia is an award winning author. I read his last book, "Madness", which is an intimate story about overcoming obstacles, set at the birth of March Madness and when Hank Luisetti revolutionized basketball. This new book "Being Brother" is another great story, this time using baseball as an analogy for life. A great book about love and family. A universal story, and if you’re from the boroughs of NYC, it's a piece of home. I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended.

Being Brothers is awesome!

Another home run from author Mike De Lucia! Being Brothers takes us back to a simpler time when family was everything. Mike perfectly captures the sights and sounds of his 1970’s Bronx neighborhood, including envy worthy descriptions of the abundance of delicious Italian food! Being Brothers is funny, poignant and life affirming. Truly a great read that takes the reader down memory lane and underscores the importance of family! Highly recommend Being Brothers and all works by this talented author!

Great memories!

Mike did an excellent job of bringing you back in time to the old neighborhood! Being Brothers brought back some great memories of growing up in the Throgs Neck area back in the '70's when bikes were your means of transportation and fun was actually had by being outdoors with friends and family. If you can relate, it will be difficult to put the book down until the end. Looking forward to the next one!

A Magnificent Tale of Loyalty

The simplicity of friendships in this story is realistic and authentic where you go on a journey through timeless memories. Some Bronx stories from back in those days tend to go gangster, instead Mike takes you to the tender soft moments of real family and friendships.

Heartwarming

This book was an excellent read. It brought me back to my childhood…. You won’t be able to put it down. It was one of those books that will put a smile on your face! Very much recommended!

A compelling tale of a Bronx neighborhood

What an incredible journey! Not only are you drawn into the lives of “a bunch of guys from the block” you get to know and like every colorful character. A true picture of a Bronx neighborhood and all the ‘stuff they did” growing up together. A slice of the Bronx you will savor and remember.

A feel good story!

This book was well written. Mike did a great job taking me back to when I grew up in the Bronx. It reminded me of the strong family values we all had. A time when our days were spent on our bikes and we played outside from sunrise till sunset. Definitely a time of pure innocence. I highly recommend this book! It will take you back to the good old days.😊

An enjoyable read.

A great easy summer read. The writer pulls you into the story from the start, and keeps you engaged throughout. Put me back in time. I would definitely recommend.

GREAT STORY 5stars

Having grown up on the east coast during the 1960's this story brought real life memories of my own. A very easy read for someone like myself who is not an avid reader. Being Brothers easily held my interest throughout. Great story and I highly recommend. Anthony Stango

This story is a sweet coming of age of brothers ,friends, parents , teachers , neighbors that is familiar to all. I loved it and would recommend this read to anyone who is missing that good old fashion life . Mike captured that era of time fabulously .

Memories of Growing Up

I read this book from beginning to end in 2 days. I really enjoyed it. Brought back a lot of memories about growing up in the bronx back in the 1970's.The author who i went to high school with really captured the neighborhood kids and parents and everything else about growing up in the Throggs neck/Pelham bay section of the Bronx. I highly reccomend this book.

Spans Time and Distance

Nothing spans time and distance more then the lifelong bond of friendship formed between two brothers, during a season of little league. Both Carol (my wife) and me enjoyed this uplifting story.

Grand Slam! Grand Salami!

A nostalgic look back to when things were done by kids that are now frowned upon or outlawed (how did the kids ever live long enough to become adults?). A well conceived, brilliantly detailed and extremely entertaining journey with an important message to boot! Don’t be the person being told to read this book, be the one doing the telling. You won’t regret it!!

Friendships and Family.

Heartwarming story about Bothers growing up in the Bronx it bought back so many fond memories!

Bravo

Excellent. Needs to be made into a movie

Golden days growing up in The Bronx!

I grew up in this neighborhood in the 60,s. I know the streets ,the schools, the park. My grandparents are buried in St Raymond’s Cemetery. I had 2 friends on my street who were brothers, Italian. We rode bikes, played stickball, flipped and scaled baseball cards. Reading this was like reading my own diary from my childhood!

Nostalgia at its best!

A trip down memory lane! Very poignant story ! I loved it because it was my neighborhood but just change the names and location and it can be your neighborhood too! Reminded me so much of my husband and his three brothers who had baseball in their veins! Read it, you’ll enjoy it! ⚾️

So good!

Such a pleasure to be transported back to my youth. This book genuinely captured the essence of family and of a time I wish I could go back to. I bet the story would make a great play or movie! Oh and the music references were right on. Great read.

Very nostalgic

I’m not an avid reader but I read this book in one night. It was very nostalgic and brought back many memories of my old neighborhood. ...the sights, sounds and smells. The names might have been different, but the feelings and events are the same. Keep writing ...I’ll keep reading.

Great read

Growing up in the same neighborhood that Mr Delucia bases his book on, I have to say, the book brought me right back to the “old neighborhood “. Similar to his last book, Mike Delucia, is detailed oriented about describing the way things were. I highly recommend this great read.

Childhood memories

Growing up in the Bronx this book brings me back to my childhood. I cherish those days and they are some of my fondest memories. If you would like to relive your childhood, this is the book for you! Thank you Mike for this book and the memories.

Great book

As someone who grew up in The Neck reading Being Brothers was like taking a trip back in time. Mike Deluca brought you on a journey to a time and place I miss and for just a little while was able to visit. A great read!

Being Brothers is a home run!

Well done! Well written story of the importance of family and the simple life in the neighborhood. This book takes you on a journey through the simple life of the 70s! Thanks for taking us back home Mike!

Fast read.

Great book that is written as a script.

Being Brothers

I really enjoyed reading this book. It shows the dynamics of siblings. How brothers can have differences of opinion but always be there for each other. I highly recommend this book as well as other books from this author.

An EXCELLENT MUST READ!!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about the good ole days gone by. Not only in the Bronx but anywhere you might live in the country. Shipped quickly and is an excellent must read!

The Bronx, the 1970's, family.

Great story about brothers growing up in the Bronx during the 70's. It's a trip back in time to simpler days and youthful dreams. Well paced and easy to read, this is another home run for Mike Delucia.

Great book

Great read. Very well written. Took me back to my childhood with all the neighborhood spots I grew up near. Highly recommended.

The joys of growing up in simpler times

Captivating story of two young brothers growing up in the Bronx ... makes you feel like you’re back in The Neighborhood, when life was simple and splendid. You won’t want to put it down :)

Wonderful neighborhood st

Great story about friends, families and neighborhoods. Totally relatable with colorful characters. Brought back many fond memories of growing up in the Bronx and attending Catholic school. Enjoyable & heart warming.

Great read!

A true depiction of neighborhood life in the seventies as told through a screenplay inside of a narrative. The novel is written with heart and a very engaging style!

A good read.

A poignant story about growing up in the Bronx in a close-nit loving family with friendship and rivalries in the neighborhood. A good read.

Great Story About Growing Up in NYC

Late 60's -early seventies growing up in the city captured perfectly. You will meet friends you knew way back when! Alot of fun!

Awesome story and a must read!

What a great story about the relationship of 2 brothers growing up in the 1970s. I also love the way the story is told. Highly recommend this book.

Go back to "the neighborhood"

I enjoyed reading Being Brothers. Coming from the Bronx it transported me back in time. The story within the story was well written. I highly recommend it!

Best read!

Absolutely delightful book! Reading it brings one back to a not so long ago past of pure clean fun, growing up, humiliations and triumphs, family ...and of course baseball!

Brings back memories of my youth!

Brings me back to my youth in Pelham bay! Innocent times with friends and siblings!

Great Read for Native New Yorkers

DeLucia delivers a great story for any native New Yorkers. I love a story about a the neighborhood I was born and raised in. Another greta purchase!!!!

Feel good book

Being Brothers is a feel good book. Reminiscing about childhood days at the ball park with friends. Can't wait for the movie.

Insightful!

Short and to the point. Insightful! Being that I have 15 brothers I take points of view to heart!

Must Read for All

The Author's books keep getting better and better. Written from the heart. Would definitely recommend to all

A fantastic read!

This book would be a great family movie! Hope to see it on the big screen one day soon.

Awesome memories from thus book.

To relive memories from the old neighborhood where I was raised.

Amazing memories

Amazing book! Thank you Mike for bringing back the memories !

Good Fun Doesn’t Cost A Thing

I liked that it showed good vclean fun amongst friends

Great Storytelling!

Mr. DeLucia is a great storyteller, who through the characters of brothers Jackie and Sal takes the reader back to a time and place in the Bronx that was not too far from where I grew up (Co-Op City). This is a wonderful book to which anyone with siblings can relate, and also to which anyone who grew up in the Bronx during that time (or even shortly after) can relate! As I was reading this book, the narration and overall feel brought to mind the TV show "The Wonder Years," although Mr. DeLucia's gift for storytelling is much better.

Being Brothers is a GRAND SLAM!

I loved indie author Mike DeLucia’s Madness. Likewise, I can heartily recommend his novel, Being Brothers, as well. Brothers is unusual in its format so don’t let it surprise you or draw you out of the story. You’ll soon get into the groove. Written as a story within a story, readers follow along as writer, Mark Marino, hones his screenplay about baseball loving brothers, Jackie and Sal Amato, in the heyday of Little League Baseball in Throgs Neck, Bronx, New York. DeLucia masterfully wields the screenplay format to jump back and forth in the timeline and illuminate the triumphs and challenges of Being Brothers. This book is a grand slam.

Fantastic Read

Very enjoyable book to read. The book gave me a feeling of the past and brought some memories back of the time frame then. The book kept my attention from beginning to the end. I recommend the book to all. I have given it 5 stars but would of rated it higher if it was possible.

Take a stroll down memory lane.

This book is reminiscent of Stephen King's "Stand By Me". It brought back both good memories, as well as some bad - with reference to Dr. Lucarelli. Mike DeLucia transported me directly back into his dental office and those visits that have scarred me for life! Even today, I have a fear of dentists because of that lunatic, and I am still angry today at how he ripped off my parents! Then there are the Son of Sam murders in '76 and Elvis' death. My mom cried for weeks over that. If you're a baseball fan, this story is perfect for you. It lovingly conveys a time in my childhood I hope never to forget such as the freedom and safety of the old neighborhood where you could come and go as you pleased.I vividly recall the blackout and Mr. Softee ice cream truck music echoing through the night as it passed by. I lovingly recall the Rocking Whip Truck down at the corner for a ride. I still remember the face of the driver. Loved how St. Benedicts played an integral part of the story. I didn't go there, but had a lot of friends that did. I was a student of St. Frances de Chantal (on the other side of Throggsneck). For me, going to Tremont Avenue meant stopping off at Hansen's, Victor's and the bakery for rolls. I clearly remember trying my first Whatchamacallit candy bar from Victor's. Frank's Pizza was always a treat for lunch where I got a slice and a soda for a buck. The Interboro Theater was great for a weekend show. Fiesta Bowling, which closed its doors for good in 2005, was another fun weekend jaunt. I like that the author made the main character a grammar freak. I can relate coming from an administrative background having proofed many a letter or project. All around great, quick read. Would recommend to all including young adult readers.

Good for the Soul. A Bronx Treasure.

If you miss the days of hanging out with your friends in the’70s, then this book will bring you home again. It’s a screenplay nested within a novel, and the Amato Family is lovable and relatable. If they don’t remind you of your family, then they’ll surely remind you of people you knew from the block —and the life lessons learned while growing up. Being Brothers is a story that you can hear as well as see. You’ll hear the voices of Phil Rizzuto and Bob Sheppard, and the songs of Stevie Wonder and the Raspberries more clearly than your transistor radio’s sound. I especially recommend this book to Bronxites and native New Yorkers who see how society has changed and crave a slice of home.

Being Brothers

This is an awesome read! If you Love the 70’s, family, the Bronx then read it! Just an amazingly written book that get you all in your feels!

A heart-warming page-turner

Though set in an earlier era, this story is thoroughly relevant today. Its description of growing up in the Bronx, the way kids talk and think and the things they do together is so vivid. The characters jump off the page: Big Sal with his cigarettes and manly advice, the school bullies, the strict Sisters in Catholic school with men's names, Jackie's nurturing and competent mother. The book promotes values that are as important today as ever and that readers can take to heart. The descriptions of baseball are excellent, fast moving and riveting.

I’m a great grandmother reminiscing about my youth

Great read. Very nostalgic. Brings me back to many great memories of my younger days growing up in east harlem

A Time to Remember

Just finished reading “Being Brothers” and loved it! I laughed and even got tears-eyed at times. I remember many of the characters and still think about them. Best of luck in your future endeavors Mike! Can’t wait to see you in the movies! AnnMarie

A sweet story that many can relate to

I grew up in the Bronx and was excited to read this book. It did not disappoint ! I loved the fact that I could actually picture the neighborhood in my mind as I was reading the story since I was born and raised in that neighborhood. All of the fictional characters reminded me of someone I knew, so it was fun to put faces to the fictional names. PLEASE PLEASE WRITE A SEQUEL. Although I must admit the screenplay format was a bit confusing I loved it none the less !

Fantastic coming of age story

This is my first book by Mike DeLucia and I loved it. Brilliantly plotted, it was a story within a story about a man reflecting on simpler times and a young boy trying to find his way. Growing up in the Bronx, while I was born in the 70s and don't remember the glory days, it felt like everything I imagined it would be. Mr. DeLucia's story is full of heart and I will definitely be reading more of his books.

A great read----even if you did not grow up in the Bronx

I came across this book and being from the Bronx had to read it. In fact, the story line takes place in the same neighborhood where i was raised whcih, to me, was an added bonus. The story line, however, will impress all regardless of where you grew up. It takes place in a time where technology didn't control our lives; where the internet wasn't even dreamed about and frankly where life was simple. It is a touching story about two brothers, friends, family; their struggles, victories, losses and fears. The story line is juxtaposed against the games we played as young men: baseball, stickball and stoop ball and the ever-present "spaldeen." It is meticulously detailed and extremely well written. I highly recommend the book.

1972!

Enjoyed Mike's book very much! As a contemporary, I felt like i was right back in 1972. Loved that it was a story within a story; the device gave the book a really nice pace. I don't know much what it's like for kids today, but they probably don't have the same freedom anymore and yes, it was great! A bike and bus pass was all you needed! Being Brothers had that feel of what it was like to be a preteen back in the day.

A nostalgic look at the Bronx in the 60's & 70's

Mike DeLucia once again serves up an embracing & enchanting account of a time when life seemed a lot simpler but perhaps, more rewarding. Having being born in the Bronx, I immediately gravitated to many of the issues contained in this work: the tyranny of parochial school, neighborhood youth dynamics, baseball & others. Mike has a vivid memory & is a keen observer of the human condition. Like his previous work, the reader is immediately drawn in into the nostalgic charm of our youth with all its flaws, conflicts & triumphs. Thank you, Mike, for capturing the essence of my youth yet creating a story of universal appeal.

Those were the days!

I enjoyed reading “Being Brothers”. In these days of political turmoil and COVID 19 it was refreshing to be brought back to my childhood in the Bronx. Mike brought me back to a happy, safe and simple time. Although I am familiar with the neighborhood and streets/school mentioned, you don’t have to be from the Bronx to appreciated his stories. If you are looking to relax with memories of a carefree childhood of school, sports and friendship, this is your book! Thanks Mike!

Best book I’ve ever read !

I LOVED IT!!! Being Brothers is the best book I’ve read in years. I’m not a sports fan but I was so captivated by the games… it’s as though I were there… but much, much more than a sports book, it was the story and the details from the 1970s. What a magical book. Being Brothers does what a great book should do, and that’s transport you to another place and time. It’s a refreshing escape from all the negativity that exists every time you turn on the TV. We need more books about family, friendship, and having fun. Great ending too. I wish there were more than 5 stars I could give to Being Brothers.

Wonderful

This is a great book! I bought it from my brothers and we read it over the holidays. We all grew up in the Bronx and this really made it feel like a wonderful Christmas. Thank you to DeLucia for this wonderful body of work.

Terrific!

Very well written. Brings me back to my youth....the fun and the struggles. I highly recommend!

Great read!

A phenomenal book by Mike DeLucia! I read his book Madness and fell in love with his story of Hank Luisetti. This time around, Mike writes a coming-of-age story centered around America's favorite past time - baseball. I highly recommend this for anyone seeking to take a break from today's fast-paced world and return to a simpler time.

Fun read!!

Fun read. Couldn’t put it down. Brought back childhood memories of my older brother and I. Felt like I was 10 years old again pitching in little league.

Being Brothers: an endearing story of childhood relationships in a Bronx neighborhood in the 70s.

Reading Being Brothers was one of the best experiences I’ve had with a book in years. The relationships were real, the characters engaging, and the plot exciting. It brought me back to a happy time, away from the current climate of negativity, anger, and confrontation. I love the 1970s, and De Lucia brings them back to life in all their splendor, from the music, to the snacks, the gadgets and more. I found myself remembering things from the old days that I’d forgotten about long ago. I laughed at the antics of the characters and also cried as well; that’s how I measure a book. If a writer can make me laugh and cry, he nailed it, and De Lucia did just that. I love this book.

Loved this book !!!

"Being Brothers" is a heartwarming story about 2 brothers growing up on the 70's. Its a great read about the importance of family and love. The world needs to read this story, especially during these difficult days we are living in. This book will make you smile. Thank you Mike DeLucia. I look forward to your next book.

Kudos to this wonderful Author!!

Kudos to This wonderful author! I grew up in the same neighborhood in the 70s, and it was so nice to revisit my childhood throughout this book. The relationship between these two young brothers was simply heartwarming. I thoroughly recommend this book to all. Wherever you grew up, everyone can relate. Annette Stanzione

Get the book...you won’t be disappointed...

I really enjoyed Being Brothers! It was well written and brought back many memories of growing up in Pelham Bay. You never forget your childhood friends and memories. It was a special time. Thanks Mike...

A MUST READ!!!

I highly encourage everyone to buy this book NOW! Mike DeLucia is a fantastic storyteller and this book doesn’t disappoint. If you are from NY this book will make you reminisce and take you back to the good old days. Being Brothers is a great read - just like DeLucia’s last book Madness. Enjoy!

A Unique Story of Friendship and Family

Being Brothers is a unique story within a story. Mark Marino is a middle-aged author/screenwriter working on a screenplay entitled, Being Brothers. It begins with Mark starting his daily routine and then sitting down to put the finishing touches on the screenplay. He shares his thoughts reminiscing about the good old days—simpler times when kids were outside playing baseball rather than on the computer. The reader then reads the screenplay of Being Brothers which is the story of Jack Amato growing from an insecure, awkward kid to the hero of the day and earning the respect of his family and friends. Set in the Bronx during the 1970s, Being Brothers is a story that would appeal to sports fans and those who would like to reminisce about life in the past.

On Delucia

I strongly recommend reading anything by Mike DeLucia. His literary work is captivating, intriguing, and sincere. I had the opportunity to read his work, "Madness", and it was exceptional. DeLucia has a gift of storytelling, and I have no doubt that "Being Brothers" will move you.

Friendship and Family

I also grew up in the 60's and 70's, not in the Bronx, but with a similar group of friends and a loving family. The story is written in the form of a screenplay, which helps paint a detailed picture of the sights, sounds, people and events that helped shape Jackie's childhood. The love, friendships, frustrations and triumphs are all written with such care, you can almost hear the moms calling their children home for supper as the sun starts to set! I loved this book, and I look forward to reading more from Mike Delucia! Absolute Five Stars!

A well-written, warm, nostalgic read!

Such an excellent book, perfect spring/summer read. It felt like a walk down memory lane, I didn’t want to put it down. If you’re looking for a warm, nostalgic read, this book is a MUST!

Excellent Read!!!

The book brings you back in time (before my time lol). I am a 90s baby and I felt as if I was there in what seems to be more peaceful times. The story illustrates a time before technology where neighbors knew each other, family time was a priority, children can be children, etc. This was a great story and a much needed escape from these unfortunate times. Can't wait for more stories!!

Loved it!

I love a good sports drama and the family dynamic in Being Brothers in intense! DeLucia puts you right in the face of it with his snappy dialogue and effortless style. His imagery of the New York setting makes you feel like you're there. Anyone who has a lived a few decades of life can relate to Jack and his need to revisit his past. I highly recommend this read. It's an easy and pleasurable page turner with some really funny moments sprinkled in there too.
