Picture this (go ahead; it’s an easy one): You’re bored with your workouts. Nothing’s changing; you’re not getting stronger or leaner or feeling better, and, heck, maybe you’ll just take a layoff and see what happens.

You know what happens. That two-week layoff lasts a year, that’s what happens!

Now consider this: Traffic was light and you’re fifteen minutes early for your dental cleaning appointment. You flip open your tablet and bring up your new copy of Before We Go. By the time the dental tech calls you, you’ve read two article chapters and are amped to get to the gym. Your mind is racing through the appointment, and it’s all you can do to stay in that squeaky lounge chair.

You get to the gym an hour later and sail through the best workout you’ve had in months, maybe years.

That’s what this book can do for you.

“I go through one chapter at a time, slowly, and let it percolate.” ~ TC Luoma, Editor-in-Chief, T Nation

Dan John’s Before We Go will spur your training to that exciting level you love.

Following the pattern set by his earlier book Never Let Go (230 reviews averaging five stars, still in the top 30 weight training books after five years on Kindle), Before We Go is the second compilation of Dan’s best articles previously published online.

I loved this book

As part of my sport internship, I had to read this book and write 3 pages summary about the book. I am a personal trainer (beginner) in terms of teaching, however I came through wide variety of exercises and techniques throughout the last 10 years. I loved this book, it is for everyone, you will always find something that you can take out of it. Dan John talks about lifting and how to get big, he talks about nutrition, he describes several exercises for burning fats and functional training. I loved it because it taught me new tweaks that I can incorporate in my training or even introducing to me new series of exercises. For example 1000 KB Swing, where you do in every training session 500 swings 5 times a week, so you complete 1000 swings in a month. Of course you don't always have to do all the prescribed exercises, you can either regress or progress, but whatever your goal is, you will find something that will fit you.

The Basics

I learned about Dan John from Perform Better Summit in Rhode Island in 2013. I loved his approached to coaching. While knowing a tremendous amount, he kept it simple and basic. That's the approach I've had during my 20 years plus of personal training and coaching. Most if not all of his teachings resonate with my philosophy. I actually was able to chat with him at the meet and greet too. I felt like a little kid meeting his idol but it's just that I respect his teachings. This is his first book I've read(a little late, lol) and will grab his others. I've been doing one of his recommended workouts and I'm on the 7th day and my body is beat up. It's so simple but yet brutal. Can't wait to stick out for the 40 days like he recommends and to actually finish it. Being a pro natural bodybuilder who trains instinctively, this is a huge leap of faith for me but I figured why not. Do yourself a favor and pick up this book and start following Dan's recommendations. I see that he is speaking in New Jersey later this year but I have a TRX summit to attend and I'm sorry I won't be able to attend. If you're reading this Dan, please plan another event somewhere in NYC or Long Island. Thanks again. Rich

Building On Brilliance...

Dan John's contributions to the fitness industry have been significant with such great books as Intervention, Easy Strength, Can You Go, and Never Let Go. It's hard to imagine building on all his previous great work, but that's exactly what he's done with Before We Go. Before We Go is a compilation (much like Never Let Go) that contains a number of Dan's greatest articles that truly make a difference. Dan is prolific writer and has a such a unique way of conveying information with stories and simplifying concepts. While his previous books, "Can You Go" and "Intervention" are more about a "system," "Before We Go" is simply a collection of fantastic articles. The book is high value content with years of training wisdom and great programming ideas. Some of my favorite chapters include: -The Best Ways to Audit Your Program -6 Challenges You Must Accept and Beat -Figuring Out Your Life and Lifting Goals -The 4 Pillars of Strength Training -Forty Years of Insight These are just a few of the great chapters in the new book that really stand out. One of the best things about Dan's work is all the little insights and "pearls" in his writing. It's all the little things - that make a big difference! Never Let Go has been such a valuable book for so many of us and it's some of the best work by Dan. It's unique because it's so much great information put together in a collection of a valuable articles. Now, we have Before We Go to follow up and build on. And, the repetition of some of the concepts makes it "stick" more, if you know what I mean. Anyone that's a fan of Dan's work is guaranteed to love the book. And, if you've never read Dan's material before, this isn't a bad place to start to gain "no-nonsense" perspective and learn about great training philosophy and what matters most. Every serious fitness enthusiast, coach, trainer, or athlete should read Dan's work.

A great piece in Dan John's catalog.

Dan does a great job wrapping up what Never Let Go began - lessons learned over his career as a trainer and coach; explanations of what motivates a person to devote his entire professional life to helping others achieve athletic success; pointing out what's really important. Before We Go is written well, flows, and tells beautiful stories about people, about training, and about maintaining perspective. Read it if you love Dan's work. Read it if you are or aspire to be a career coach. Read it if you need some suggestions about turning your physical life around. Just read it.

Angles

An excellent book. If you're a lifter (and even if you currently are not), you will benefit from reading what Dan John has to say about the iron game. From philosophy to technique to programs, it is here. This book is a collection of his articles that are generally available for free on the Internet. So if you are wondering who the heck Dan John is, peruse his online articles first. Having purchased one of his other books (Never Let Go) , I purchased the kindle version of Before We Go, so that I would always have them at my fingertips.

Great advice for all aspects of life.

Seriously, great in every regard. I have been reading Dan's articles for years in T-Nation, and I decided to review this book after reading through it a second time. I find myself quoting him or one of the people in his life whom he often quotes. Never Let Go has the same structure, but overall, I think I like this just a little better. Life lessons abound. As the subtitle states, this is really a collection of philosophical and touching essays from the perspective of a lifetime in pursuit of strength. Oh yeah, and I've been making mad gains!

I didn’t want to finish the book because ...

... I had been sure I will miss it. This book is only sum of John’s other articles, which I already read on t-nation, but together with his more personal stories, It makes you feel like you really know Dan John. In the middle of the book, I started to read veeerrryy slowly just to enjoy the book and I want it never ends. This is very rare as I read hundrerds of books every year.

Another must read

I read many of the chapters within this book on the web. There were a few that I had missed that I'm sure glad I found in this book. There were many that I am so happy to have read again. I have no doubt that I'll be reading at the very least, parts of it again and again. I've never been disappointed by anything Dan John has written. It's always about more than lifting heavy things.

Reads as if I am having conversation with Dan

Dan is a great coach and like all great coaches he speaks not only on training but the mental side of life to reach your potential

Health and fitness in perspective.

This is a great book. There are so many people writing programs or selling program books. Do this, do that and you will lose weight or whatever they are selling. Dan John arms you with the knowledge to write your own program. This book has programs in it, but his opening question is, "what are your goals." After reading his book, I'm able to set realistic goals. My program will now rotate through my different needs and I'm going to get more rest. My kindle is full of highlights and book marks. I plan to reread it again because I know I missed things.

Another great one.

As usual, Dan hits the nail on the head. He has written about much of this before but that is sort of the point- in lifting, as in life there are truisms that are simply can't be denied. He is a master of conveying this with his simple recommendation to "do this." Whether it is to mix swings and goblet squats or save ten percent of your income his advise is always useful. This book, as it's subtitle suggests, is a must read for those who wish to be strong and live well.

Balanced Approach to Fitness

Great advice on balanced and practical approach to life long fitness. I did the 10,000 swing challenge and got some great results. I would recommend all his books in this series and the one entitled, Intervention.

Dan John Is a legend

Love all dan John books.have several work outs in the book. Easy to read.

Dan John is great. This book is great

Dan John is great. This book is great. Not many people in the fitness industry can write so precise and clear about fitness and the best thing is it's no-bullshit. Dan will tell you the truth and how he really feels about things. Grab this book if you're training needs some motivation.

Many quotable quotes with great advice.

Sage timeless advice. A lifetime of keep it simple stupid advice. Keep a highlighter handy and you will be rewarded.

Excellent.

This is a great book on physical training. All of Dan John's books are practical and effective. Great resource for finding creative ways to tweak your training program to address gaps and reach goals.

A great collection from one of the best minds in fitness

This is a wonderful collection from one of the best (and most entertaining) fitness authors out there. The book is a compilation of many articles that Dan John has written for various training websites over the years. Although I have read many of these great essays prior to purchasing this collection, it includes a whole bunch more that I had missed. New and old, they are all awesome, and the book is a steal at the price! Dan covers a wide variety of topics related to fitness and training - and he does it with humor and perspective that make reading his work a true pleasure. There's something in this book for everyone. Whether you're a hard core fitness fire-breather or a casual trainee simply looking for ways to get healthier, you're sure to benefit from the hard-won insight offered up in this book. You'll also be entertained, because the pearls of wisdom are served up with plenty of laughs!

Another good read from Dan John

Another good read from Dan John. He wrote about some of the same things he has in his other books but it is still motivational and worth the read.

Five Stars

OUTSTANDING!!! As all of DJ's works are. simple-concise-depth-thought provoking!

Read this of you have any fitness asperation....common sense inside

There are many nuggets of wisdom I'm this collection. Many things that after reading you have a head slap, of course moment. Dan imparts wisdom while still being down to earth as well as funny.

Rich

Coach Dan John continues to enlighten and share his wealth of knowledge. This excellent read is full of simple principles and programs you can apply today.

Great book.

Read it. Enjoy it. Read it again.

Five Stars

Love everything he writes. So clear and concise.

Good read

I gave this book a four only because the author complained that ratings are either 1 or 5. This book is less how to get stronger than why. Indeed it is more about why do anything. Don't get me there is plenty about goblin squats and farmer walks, he sprinkles in plenty about goal setting, time management, community, eating, and sleeping. In short, it has a lot interesting reflections on living.

Delivers

As ever Dan John delivers real world training advice. Buy with confidence. Highly recommended.

Dan John writes the best books on exercise I have found.

I love Dan John's material

I love Dan John's material. I have read all his other books. Very similar. I was hoping for some new content.

Get this book it will make you a better coach or athlete but you still have to do ...

BEFORE WE GO. Is a book to get you thinking a little more on what you're doing as coach. A tool is defined as a device or implement, especially one held in the hand, used to carry out a particular function. Well here is a "Tool" for your coaching collection. Get this book it will make you a better coach or athlete but you still have to do the work. I guess maybe I just called you a tool, Dan. haha.

Terrific reminder that success leaves tracks.

The forward of the book says it all. You can't do everything Coach Dan John suggests all at the same time. Well.. you can. But that's not the path to success. Re-read the stories. Re-read the articles. I find a new insight every time. Maybe you will too. Enjoy it. As always, I love the index. I find exactly what I'm I'm looking for, I just have to slow down and finish the program I'm on before starting it. Thanks, Coach.

very good read

As the others Dan John's books this one is a concentrate of experience!

Love all Dan John's work

Love all Dan John's work, it was an instant purchase once I saw it for sale. Simple assessment tools and straightforward programming is what attracts me to his work.

Buy, read and apply this information.

Although I have read most of Dan's writings and books this collection of insights is a valuable one stop shop for information. As a coach I have stolen most of Dan's strategies for the benefit of my trainees. I challenge the idiocy I see around me from trainers and clients, those who are trying to build the chimney when the foundations aren't laid, one legged bosu ball squats, a machine for lateral raises, really!! This book reinforces the basic movements that few appear to do any more. Buy it, read it, understand it and then apply it. Stop fannying around in the gym and do the movements. People half my age (I'm 54) and half my strength ask me how I got there and then continue with what got them to where they are now, rather than do what I do. I do what Dan does and teaches, it works, it works big time.

Dan John = legend

Brilliant book. Full of useful advice, tips, insight and hilarity. Dan John is a guru of gurus and a legend to boot

Dan does it again

Every time I read something of Dans I learn something new. His knowledge and experience always shine throughout his writing and this book is no different. Another great read.

Dan John showing again why he's worth listening to

Dan John seems to be that voice of reasonable insight that you know at the pit of your stomach you know is right. This book is like a virtual strong arm around your shoulder, calmly talking to you about the simple ideas that underpins health & fitness. This book is now Full of gems, lots of book marks, noted and highlights for repeat consumption and at times when I need a voice to guide me back to the path

READ IT

Simply Awesome and challenges your thought process in regards to training.... You won't regret reading it, you will regret picking up that kettlebell for the first set of fifty swings... World Class as always... Thanks Dan John.

Four Stars

Great as expected, but not quite as brilliant as Never Let Go.

A must read for powerlifters body builders athletes in general and even salesmen

I have read several of Dan Johns books and continue to read them several times. Great info for recreational athletes or coaches alike He gives a lots of how and why too as well

Strength and conditioning 101

A great strength and conditioning coach, who has more in the trenches experience than many others put together. Very insightful read with lots of useful tips and information.

Really useful for anyone with a strength or field athletics interest.

Product arrived early, in great condition znd is an excellent read.

Awesome book

Dan has done it again. Awesome book. I couldn't put it down, so much information on strength, health and life.

Demands

You can dabble in a lot of sports, but in real, hard core strength training where you want to see results, you've got to be all in. Dan John is completely committed. He manages to strip away all the nonsense and provide extremely simple workouts. The only thing is, you've got to do them. The book is a series of musings (likely collected blog posts); it doesn't cite studies (although he credits other authors and coaches for their ideas), doesn't discuss progressions or much cross training, and is not sport-specific. Dan provides detailed information about the benefits of swings and loaded carries, which haven't been covered in other books I've read so far. I also liked that Olympic weightlifting features centrally in Dan John's training programs. The author makes some wonderful points about fat loss, mass and strength building, quality sleep, and getting focused on improvement. The weights he suggests are aimed at a high school or college football player, but if you can't manage them (and no way can I do a bodyweight snatch or bench press!), the same basic principle applies - just do what is intense enough for you to see changes. The book is also very funny. I highlighted quite a few gems for later reference, and I will certainly read more from Dan John.

Back to basics. This book perfectly illustrates the axiom that if you can't explain something simply you don't understand it well enough. This breaks down physical training and in particular strength training to its most basic and effective form. Its also got a very positive motivational message and quite a bit of sarcastic humour to keep you interested. Worth a read for both the novice and more dedicated physical training enthsiast.

Must have...

...for anyone who loves to lift and / or is interested in becoming strong. A great compilation from a legit and legendary coach!
