This is a heavy tome - you will not be bringing this back and forth to your local coffee shop for browsing. But its beautifully put together and very comprehensive for students of the era. Starts in the early 1800s to give the backdrop. Maps and illustrations galore. Gives attention to events not so well covered in the past - the tithe war, the land war, the gradual extinction during the late 1800s of the Anglo Irish Big House. Its for browsing intermittently on the coffee table over tea, more than a full sit down cover to cover........

A substantial collection of studies to The Rising and background. Many scholars. Well illustrated. If you are a serious student on the start of the independent Irish state, this is a required tome. It is great value for the price, also it weighs a ton. .

Would have easily given 5 stars. However my book is already falling apart. I purchased this in 2018, the spine has come away and pages are falling out. I didn't break the back by twisting on it, or bending the covers together. This is the most expensive, poorly made, facinating and excellent read on this subject.

It's a wonderfully comprehensive and massive resource on the Irish Revolution. I'm only 100 pages through - and am hopping around to various parts, but every section is enjoyable. It's one of those books that I will go back to year after year.

Looks like a marvelous publication. Unfortunately, it areived damaged. The jacket cover was badly torn.

This book is the definitive treatise on the Irish Fight for Freedom. The work is meticulously researched, and the details of history are woven in masterfully.

A comprehensive account of revolutionary period with outstanding writing and illustrations. A huge book both physically and intellectually. Bravo University College Cork.

Just got it a couple of days ago so it’s going to take a few days to get through the over 1000pages

First I need to say that this is a great and important piece of work. Just look at all the reviews, here and elsewhere. I have one quibble, and I think it's worth taking half a star off. The book should have been published in two volumes in a slipcase, for two reasons. First, it would have made the reading experience much easier, much more comfortable. And second, I don't think the spine is going to hold up over the years. This is the sort of book that should be passed on to future generations, and I think it's destined to be pretty flimsy after several readings. I know, my suggestion would have made this expensive book even more so, but I really think it would have been well worth the price. Once more, a great book, all involved should be proud.

An extremely thorough and exceptionally well put together book with a wealth of information on Ireland’s revolutionary history. Lots of maps, photographs and graphics explaining the text which is very accessible and interesting. The printing and presentation is excellent though be warned.. this is a very large and heavy book so not really suited to bedtime reading! This book should be in every household in Ireland. A must for anyone interested in Irish history. Excellent.

The book is HUGE and extremely detailed. I haven't read it yet as it's a present but have flicked through it and it looks amazing. Just a warning, it's big and heavy. Not exactly a lap or bedtime book. But something that everyone in Ireland should have in their home to read and learn about the history of Ireland. One thing though, the packaging it came in wasn't great. Just a thrown together Amazon box with some other items that I'd ordered, with nothing to protect the book. Some of the corners were damaged but I pressed them out as best I could. (Would have been 5 stars if not for the damage)

This is an amazing book on Ireland's struggle for freedom in the 20th Century, a volume that will inform future generations of Ireland and beyond of the determination and courage of a people that would not bow to the greatest Empire the world had experienced! Tis book should have a treasured place in every Irish home.

Thi is quite a major work, written by a group of historians in an objective manner. They have unearthed many photos from archives in different countries. It is quite a heavyweight tome but surely must be the definitive work on the topic.

This is another success for the Author, Co authors and Cork University Press . A comprehensive history of the Irish Revolution that makes for great reading over time as it is full of facts and information of the period. A great reference source to trawl through time and time again. Also you will need a sturdy bookshelf.

An incredible body of work with a wealth of maps to illustrated the evolution of a national ideal. The most magnificent work on Ireland for the last 40 years as far as I'm concerned.

This must be the definitive work on the subject. More than an atlas, more of an encyclopaedia. Informative and readable text. lots of maps and relevant illustrations Prospective buyers should strengthen their bookshelf. I have many a weighty tome, but this beats them all.

A thorough piece of research by serious academics and observers on Irish history. The use of unique maps opens up a new perspective on how Ireland developed. Every home should have one!

On A art paper , with excellent reproductions of documents, it is a lovely production.

A great book just read little bits of it yet (900+) pages fully comprehensive of the fight for Irish freedom plenty of historical photos maps and statistics a book to treasure

It will take time to read it it seems to be well researched very pleased with the condition of the book wouldn't have known it was a used speedy delivery

An incredible encyclopaedia of the Irish Revolution of 1916. I’ve never had a book with a more thorough account of this spectacular time in Irish history. Highly recommended.

It’s a must for those interested in the Irish history of the period.
