NAMED ONE OF THE FIVE BEST MEMOIRS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST
“Moving . . . a story about family and faith, told with a poet’s sensibility . . . Khizr Khan’s book can teach all of us what real American patriotism looks like.” —The New York Times Book Review
In fewer than three hundred words, Khizr Khan electrified viewers around the world when he took the stage at the 2016 Democratic National Convention. And when he offered to lend Donald Trump his own much-read and dog-eared pocket Constitution, his gesture perfectly encapsulated the feelings of millions. But who was that man, standing beside his wife, extolling the promises and virtues of the U.S. Constitution?
In this urgent and timeless immigrant story, we learn that Khizr Khan has been many things. He was the oldest of ten children born to farmers in Pakistan, and a curious and thoughtful boy who listened rapt as his grandfather recited Rumi beneath the moonlight. He was a university student who read the Declaration of Independence and was awestruck by what might be possible in life. He was a hopeful suitor, awkwardly but earnestly trying to win the heart of a woman far out of his league. He was a brilliant and diligent young family man who worked two jobs to save enough money to put himself through Harvard Law School. He was a loving father who, having instilled in his children the ideals that brought him and his wife to America—the sense of shared dignity and mutual responsibility—tragically lost his son, an Army captain killed while protecting his base camp in Iraq. He was and is a patriot, and a fierce advocate for the rights, dignities, and values enshrined in the American system.
An American Family shows us who Khizr Khan and millions of other American immigrants are, and why—especially in these tumultuous times—we must not be afraid to step forward for what we believe in when it matters most.
Praise for An American Family
“An American Family is a small but lovely immigrant’s journey, full of carefully observed details from the order in which Ghazala served tea at a university event, to the schedule of the police patrols in the Boston Public Garden where Khan briefly slept while he was in between apartments, to the description of Humayun’s headstone as a ‘slab of white marble with soft streaks the color of wood smoke.’”—Alyssa Rosenberg, The Washington Post

Every American Should Read It.
As a lawyer and (not particularly successful) author, I was especially interested in Mr. Khan's book. I was not disappointed. His prose radiates. Whether he is describing twilight ("the afternoon wore on until a bright azure above the courtyard changed to dusty cobalt edged with pink and orange") or his first glimpse of the Declaration of Independence ("I was like a lonesome islander who'd found a bottle washed up on a beach, a secret tucked inside that told of a wonderland."), his words linger with you. As soon as I finished reading An American Family, I wanted to start reading it again. It is a love story -- of his love for his parents and grandparents, his wife and children, and for his country, this country. He is the epitome of the American Dream. He studied hard in Pakistan, scrimped and saved to attend Harvard, graduated and started practicing law. When he writes of the loss of his son, Capt. Humayun Khan, who was killed in Iraq, his loss is palpable. Of his white marble headstone in Arlington, he writes "27 years reduced to 11 carved lines." But he also exhibits great pride in his son's service to the USA. He writes that his son was "destined for greatness, a king who would shine among the heavens. He was and I believe he does." He discusses his faith and traditions and culture, but he does not dwell on them. He is a patriotic American citizen and believes we cannot solve our problems by building walls and sowing division. He believes that we are all richer if we learn about and embrace our differences, be it color of skin, culture or traditions or religion. I have only known one Muslim well, a man named Nabil who has returned to his native country, Egypt. (Those who are afraid of immigrants need to get to know people like Nabil and Mr. Khan) He stirred an interest in Islam long ago and introduced me to the hadiths, the 'various reports describing the words, actions, or habits of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.' Are there those in predominantly Muslim countries who wish to harm? -- yes. But they are not the majority. Mr. Khan is a shining example of what many of the hadiths, which are similar to the Christian Beatitudes, teach us -- "None of you has faith until he loves for his brother or his neighbor what he loves for himself." This is much like the Golden Rule ... one we would all be better off trying to live by.
Powerful and uplifting!
This powerful, uplifting memoir is a must-read for every American. Mr. Khan is famous for challenging then-presidential candidate Donald Trump to read and absorb the precepts of the US Constitution. Mr. Khan relates his journey from idealistic young student in politically-troubled Pakistan to patriotic American lawyer, activist and, sadly, Gold Star father. His writing is lyrical, gentle, witty, and deeply moving. His love for his beautiful, accomplished wife, Ghazala, and their three sons shines through every word. In simple, heartrending prose, he tells of their devastating loss of their middle son, Captain Humayun Khan, who died protecting his fellow soldiers and Iraqi citizens from a suicide bomber. From their loss, he and Ghazala have created a beautiful legacy of hope, honor, and deep devotion to this country. Despite the current atmosphere of intolerance towards immigrants and different cultures, they remain hopeful that justice and freedom will prevail.
Every American needs to read this book.
This is one of the most inspiring books I have ever read. As a retired pastor, I believe I can say with no doubt whatsoever that God has blessed us all with the Kahn family. Their story reminds my why I love this country, and that we are a good people, a great people, no matter what the current presidential office-holder may have to say. He is not what this country is all about; the Kahn’s are, and so are we, if we have within us the same spirit that shines through them.
Powerful, moving and inspiring--the story not just of the Khans but of many Americans
What a beautiful and inspiring book. As I read of Khizr Khan's journey from his poor village in Pakistan to his arrival in America with almost no money in his pocket, I thought of my own family's story --my Great grandmother, impoverished, managing to escape from the Irish famine to a new life in America, my Grandmother coming from a life without hope in Italy, my grandfather from a destitute village in Wales. This book is representative of so many of our stories-- of poor, courageous, smart, gritty, determined people searching for hope and new beginnings in America. Mr. Khan--and my own family-- experienced racism, religious prejudice, and hate, yet it was dwarfed by the kindness and openness of many others --those that I think of as true Americans. Mr. and Mrs. Khan paid the ultimate price to be American when their son died in Iraq while saving his soldiers. I am sickened and revolted by Trump's attacks on the Khan family. Mrs. Khan, I want you to know that your silence spoke volumes about your grief. You are beautiful and strong and I thank you and your husband for your courage.
This is a great book for all Americans to read.
Don’t forget that America was built by immigrants and to look down on immigrants would be counter to the faith in America. Yes, even American Indians are immigrants to this land. Cheers to all the immigrants who came before and who will follow. All the children who were born in America are children of immigrants and should be proud. Here’s to America! And what a great book this is. Thank you.
The Most Uplifting Book I've Read in Years (And I read 4-5 books at a time all the time)
This has been the most "soul feeding" book I have read in years. I love it and will read it again. I sent copies to my children. I am so grateful to Khizr Khan and his family for immigrating to this country, for blessing us with their wisdom and integrity, for helping me see my country through new eyes. I have come to love this family and thank God for them, especially as our country goes through this terrible scourge Donald Trump has brought upon us. I would give this book 10 stars if I could.
Great pride, Great shame
This is a wonderful book and an incredible American immigrant story. I will purchase multiple copies for friends and family. I feel such pride to be an American and to have the Khan family as brothers and sisters. The loss of their beloved son - like so many killed in war- is more than any family should have to endure. And while I feel pride in our country and this family I also feel great shame in how they were treated and disrespected by now President Trump. While I cannot reach out directly to the Khans, I sure can reach out directly to local dreamers. Mr. Khan reminds us and by example lights a way...
Inspiring book of the Khan family
This is a very well written, easy to read story of the life of Khizr Kahn. It begins with his humble beginning of his life as a son of a Pakistani farmer who through extreme sacrifice and often reading the U S Constitution, ends up earning a law degree from Harvard. It is a very personal written book, and I couldn’t put it down. Even through the death of his son, Captain Kahn, whose heroics gave his life to save the men under his command. I found the book very powerful in all this family has gone through, even with their son giving the ultimate sacrifice for his country. The family shows how immigrants are so grateful for being in the United States with all its freedoms and ones ability even through extreme sacrifice, to go on and have the chance to succeed with hard work and determination. He also mentions how native born Americans take our freedoms for granted (not in a negative way). I highly recommend this book. Even with all the adversity the Khan family endured, the reader comes away edified with a sensitivity of how precious the Constitution and our freedom are as seen through the lives of a Muslim immigrant family.
A new title for this book should be "A GREAT American Family"
How wonderfully and powerfully Mr. Khan shares his family's life with the reader. I not only enjoyed learning about his and Mrs. Khan's journey to come to the U.S. and the struggles and sacrifices they made to build their lives here, but was mesmerized by their persistence. What a powerful book and an easy read. I will certainly recommend this book to anyone (starting with young teens) who wants to better understand why America is GREAT ALL THE TIME! Congrats to Mr. Khan for doing an outstanding job in writing this memoir!!
A scholarly memoir that celebrates our country
This true, detailed account of a well-educated immigrant from Pakistan embracing our Constitution even while a student in his own country, was especially poignant after hearing his discourse with Trump during the 2016 election. I loved reading about the cultural expectations of his courtship, how he overcame poverty while seeking his law degree. It is rare to read a story that celebrates our unique nation. It is also rare to read a story that celebrates scholarship and the family. The story of his son's bravery and how he lost his life while protecting his soldiers, was tragic. This is an important book to read.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. It is extremely well written and flows smoothly. It made me smile at times and there were times when I cried because I could actually feel the pain of that beautiful family. Yes, they are an American family and I would place them among the best Americans. We are a nation of immigrants and I am thankful that the Khans chose to make this country their home. We need more people like the Khans because they make this country better. I thank Khizr Khan for his extraordinary book.
Beautiful. Savored it all in one reading.
This book is beautifully written. Truly an inspiring story of love and respect for America and family. The blend of Rumi poetry and Thomas Jefferson was poetic Artistic and inspiring. Not political and not morbid. Well done Mr. and Mrs. Khan on raising a fine family and an honorable soldier.
Powerful
I read “An American Family” within a single day. One of the best books I’ve read in the past year. I bought “An American Family” not knowing Mr. Kahn’s role in the presidential campaign. Rather, I bought it hoping to gain an understanding of the Muslim experience in America. Mr. Kahn’s story of his life journey helped me to appreciate the wonderful freedoms and essential human rights provided by our culture and constitution. I am proud to have Mr. Kahn as a fellow citizen.
Kleenex franchise needed.
A story about a Gold Star father and his family and a moment in time in American history. It is the story about an immigrant’s adoption of American values and the high cost of choosing American citizenship. It is about a man’s choice to serve his values for the benefit of others and about the amazing and generous people who stepped up to help him. One immigrant’s story to make you appreciate the country you live in and the cost to the country’s core values from the election of Trump.

Inspirational! So rewarding to read a story about a man and the whole family whose values would well to be admired and emulated by all of us. As Americans we often take the blessing of being born in a country with our freedoms for granted. What a pleasure to witness our freedoms through the eyes of someone who was not born or reared with them. At this time in our country's experience, we have much to learn from the Kahn family. We are blessed to have them in our American family!
Fantastic read!
I loved this book. I read it over a weekend and couldn’t help but admire Mr. Khan and his family. He has a wonderful way of telling his story in simple, relatable terms that connect to the experiences of all Americans. I ended the book hoping that I can be as great and loyal of an American as Mr. Khan. He is a shining example of a life lived with dignity and grace. I greatly admire Khizr Khan. I bought several copies to distribute to my friends and family.
Touching, enlightening read
Mr. Khan has shared his wonderful life’s story. He expresses so much that emphasizes the good inside himself and how fortunate we are in the US. The contrast to our current administration is striking. One can only hope that all the good he expresses is reclaimed as manifest in American society. Charity, compassion, hard work, ethics. Not the bilious fear spewed by so many. Kudos to the author!
An American Family: A Memoir of Hope and Sacrifice by Khizr Khan
Once I started reading this book, I could not put it down. It is the immigrant story of a family who believed in the American Dream and came to this country for a better life for themselves. In the process, they made this country better. Tragically they lost their son in Iraq. Because of his bravery, and the lessons from his parents regarding the goodness of America the soldiers in his unit survived. In these chaotic times, with xenophobia being the norm, we need to remind ourselves that we are a country of immigrants and our differences make this country better. This book will reinforce that belief at a time when we badly need it.
A great book about an outstanding immigrant American family
This is an excellent book about a family of immigrants with the utmost integrity who made huge sacrifices to become citizens of America. Donald Trump should read this and take time off Twitter. Maybe he will understand immigrants and those who have come from a different wall of life with compassion and understanding instead of hate. Thank you for sharing your story Mr. Khan. Above all I thank your son for making the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Fabulous, interesting reading! Mr. Khan is a very gifted writer! (I am myself published; greatly appreciate his talent.) I recommend this book -- more of us "born here" need to understand and recognize not just WHERE immigrants come from but, moreover, WHAT they come from! I will support this internationally-educated man wholeheartedly, should he ever decide to run for public office ... he is far more patriotic than most of us!! We can use his experience and wisdom....
Khizr I am a 100% Christian American born citizen.
Khizr I am a 100% Christian American born citizen. I am weary of the shenanigans going on in this country and at the white house. The people occupying it now do not represent me or my beliefs. Every day they become more of an embarrassment and complete antithesis to what I trust in and who I am. I am weary and tired and I can hardly stand it any more. Please I ask you I need a Ghazala to look to to be the first American Muslim first lady to show my children and grand children that honor and discipline and good family values and training are still alive and well in America!
Upstanding Family
Very interesting! Mr Kahn is such an enthusiastic and highly respected person. He sacrifices so much for his Family whom he cherishes! Trump Could never understand this man and his integrity. May the pain of losing his beautiful son lessen as time goes by. We thank his son for his service and the Kahn’s for his son’s ultimate sacrifice! G-d bless the Kahn family!
Inspired by the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, he lived the American Dream
This memoir touched me deeply. Mr. Kahn was awed by the concepts outlined in the documents drafted by our founding fathers and tells his unbelievable story sublimely. From his early experiences with his wise grandfather to his speech at the democratic convention he advocates for fairness, justice and compassion for everyone. In his life's journey people were kind to him and he in turn was charitable to those in need in order to give back. He makes a case for the contribution and value immigrants bring to our country.
Glorious!
Captain Humayun Khan will never be a “footnote.” His family has gifted to us his vivid life in a memoir that should be required reading for every citizen. It is deeply inspiring, a book full of the ordinariness of life infused with strength, hope, courage. What we aspire to be as citizens is here in these pages. It is not possible to be less than both grateful and proud of this extraordinary American family.
A wonderful story, a wonderful man
Khizr Khan is an extraordinary man who had the courage to write his family's story from their origins in Pakistan to their immigration to America. After the death of their son, a Captain in the US Army, during the Iraq war, Mr. Khan and his wife were asked to speak before the 2016 Democratic Convention about being a Gold Star family. His short and eloquent speech stirred the world. His book gave the background of his family's migration and subsequent citizenship, and stirred this reader. A wonderful story, a wonderful man, an amazing family. A great read!
An inspiring account of an American family
An excellent, uplifting, and at times sad, read that I could not put down. Mr. and Mrs. Khan are true, decent, patriotic Americans and exemplify the best of what America is. I think if each of us (and one person in particular) aspired to their belief in, and protection of, our Constitution America would be a better place than it is today...
A immigrants struggle to have a better life
Decided to buy this book because of his speech at the dnc. It didn't disappoint. The book starts out in a small rural village in Pakistan and his adventure to find a better life. The struggle he had to overcome, the hard work and dedication to have a better life. His journey to foreign lands and the challenges he had to overcome. Yet along the path special angels helped him. A immigrants story and the special angels that helped. A true American family
A testimony to what is great about our country.
A moving memoir about a man who truly appreciates what this country stands for as laid out by our Founding Fathers. Mr. Khan's determination and patriotism are extremely admirable.
... first purchase of an audible book and I’m so glad I did it
This was my first purchase of an audible book and I’m so glad I did it. Hearing it in Mr. Khan words made it that much more thoughtful and special. You can feel the love and emotions for his wife and his family. This is what the American dream means. A special family!!!
A must read for Americans of all stripes!
What a delight to read Mr. Khan's book. Once, I started, I could not put it down. It's casual style makes it an easy, interesting but also very thoughtful reading. Mr. Khan, a Muslim Pakistani American has written a beautiful memoir of hope and sacrifice, reminding us all of our American values. His journey from Pakistan to Dubai to Houston to Maryland and eventually to Virginia is beautifully and vividly written. His description of his son's death is heart wrenching. Mr. and Mrs. Khan are the best of what American has to offer. Let's hope that we Americans let not his and his son's, captain Humayun Khan's sacrifice go in vain. Mr. Khan has proven himself to be a river full of fresh water, nourishing to so many, flowing nicely. "So what if you are thirsty? Always be a river for everyone" : Rumi Page # 211 Mr. Khan gives a true definition of courage; "True courage, by contrast, requires sacrifice and, quite often, physical risk for the benefit of others." Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Khan!
Highly recommend!
It's been a long time since I've read a biography-I tend to read mysteries to just distract myself. But this book is fascinating and well worth the read.
A must read
Khizhr Kahn shares a lesson in patriotism from the perspective of a Pakistan immigrant who becomes an American citizen, raises three sons and loses his middle son in Iraq. When we begin to be syndical of this country and our freedoms, Khan reminds us of the miracle that is this country and our US Constitution. Excellent book!
ACCOLADES
What a touching memoir. I fell in love with Khizr and his bride. Not many of us would have the perseverance to go to the extremes and hardships they did to instill in their sons the dedication to democracy and the importance of education. The belief in respect, truth, and honesty he portrays is impressive. I am in awe.
A real American family!!!
This book was a really good one tome I enjoyed following Mr.Khan through his life and seeing how he and his family became Americans . He is an I aspiration to us all and his son was a real hero.

I purchased this as a gift for my adult daughter. I have been so moved by Mr. Khan and wanted to support the nonprofit he has established. My daughter was thrilled to receive this gift. The book will be shared with other family members. Thank you!
A reminder of our priveledge
In my frustration, I forgot. If only we could find humble Americans to bring out the best our country offers and implement without prejudice the tenants of decency. Excellent writing and points well made. Thanks for reminding me who the best of us are and thank you for your willingness to say it out loud, through your missing.
Wonderfully written. It kept me up until 3
Wonderfully written. It kept me up until 3:30 a.m. until I finished it. Just could not put it down. My book discussion group is discussing it this month.
Fabulous Read
I couldn't put it down. Every American needs to read this to once again appreciate how lucky we are to live here, and to be reminded that our constitution needs to be followed.
Lovely Family
Wonderful book about a grieving family that was horribly hurt by prejudiced people.
Inspired by Wisdom
I have never known what it means to be an American until I have seen the accounting of the experience through the eyes of an immigrant American family. I found this an amazing read that humbled and shamed me at times. Perfection in poetic prose. Well done, in words, deeds and life, Mr. Kahn. Well done!
A love letter to America
It should be required reading in civics classes. I hope our country can survive Trump and we can once again live up to "that shining city on the hill" ideal for future immigrants.
A true American. He taught his family to respect ...
A true American. He taught his family to respect their new country and to be decent human beings. The president of the United States could learn from him!
Minds Open are good
Grabbed the attention of my Trump fanatic dad who lived in Pakistan for 8 years. He enjoyed it.

A truly amazing story by such an amazing true American. I will remember his words forever. .Everyone should read this book to appreciate how lucky we are to live in this country. Thank you Khizr for your humility and your sacrifice.
The best of the best
We bought two of these--one to keep, one to gift. These people are an inspiration and thank God for them and those like them.
Honoring The Best in America
A fine writer reminds us of what is best in American history that can inspire us all to preserve the basic humane ground on which it stands.
and this is definitely one of the five best. It is inspirational
I have read over 100 books in my life time, and this is definitely one of the five best. It is inspirational, and it is full of hope.
A Profile in Courage and Intellect
An American Family is so much more than an autobiography of Khizr Khan. The reader will learn about the history, culture and mores of Pakistan, the importance of family: past, present and future, of love and overwhelming loss, of hunger, homelessness, poverty and of the unslakable thirst for knowledge. It is primarily a story of an immigrant coming to the United States because he knew both intellectually and spiritually, that it offered the best chance for a life of dignity, justice, equality and personal fulfillment. As a first year student of law in Lahore, Mr. Khan was jolted to his very core by the words of the Declaration of Independence. He was electrified by the safeguards codified for all citizens in the US Constitution and that this document was amendable as the times warranted. But this book is also a clarion call to remind us that we have the responsibility to safeguard the legacy of America's founding fathers. We must rally against any effort to deny fundamental rights and freedoms to all and to encourage and protect those seeking an opportunity to come to the USA for a better life. To quote Mr. Kahn, "I am an American patriot not because I was born here, but because I was not ...When you live somewhere where fundamental dignity and equality do not exist, it is all you yearn for."
You need to know this man's history. A living hero.
Makes you proud to share a country with this man! Living in Charlottesville I have had several opportunities to meet the author and hear him speak. He and his wife honor their fallen son by mentoring young people.
Loved this book!
I wanted to know more about Mr. Khan and his family after hearing him speak at the Democratic convention. I have read it twice and think Mr. Khan is a good man who truly loves his adopted home. I feel like he is a friend and both times it was a easy and comforting read. The Khan family has given the ultimate sacrifice to this country and I thank them.

Beautifully written. Gives me hope for our country. Makes me want to defend and protect the ideals and foundation of our country from selfish and divisive politics.
An incredible ode to America
Rarely have I read a book that has touched me as much this one. I realized that I have taken the blessing of being a citizen far too lightly. My next reads are the Declaration of Independence ant the US Constitution!

How Character and Community are Created
Recommended this book to several friends, bought it on a friend's recommendation. Liked the story and the family. What a contrast to so many of our prejudices and stereotypes.
A humbling read.
Moving, emotional and inspirational. A humbling read.

We Are Stronger Together
I LOVED this book! All of us native-born Americans need to be reminded of the "wonders' of our heritage. I don't have the right words to express how meaningful this book was to me. We Americans are so spoiled. We take everything for granted. As I turned the pages, telling of Khan's journey and struggles , and his great regard for Americans along the way, I reflected on my own journey, and how much better I should have done when dealing with others as I've journeyed through life.. His book reminded me most of us are truly selfish and concerned only with our needs. But that's only MY take-away. Khan stresses how thoughtful Americans are, and how they stepped up to aid his journey, not for personal gain, but because they were decent people who cared about his needs. Khan has a thirst for knowledge and is a keen observer of life . I loved reading his life story. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I followed his romance,, sharing customs of his native land and their struggles to be together. I hope this book will find it's way into every high school Civics class.....(.do they even teach Civics now?). I was so thankful to be reminded of what America CAN BE FOR EVERYONE..
A wonderful story that will renew your sense of patriotism.

Read and be humbled
There was not a moment that I wanted to put this book down. Even though I knew a few friends would maybe be riled by some of the political content in the last ten pages, it is a must read and I am quick to mention it to anyone. I appreciated the contrast Khan built in his memoir of living in two very different societies. Having lived in only America, and having the luxury of living in rural areas; I can sometimes forget just how blessed I am to be born in this great country. I am proud of our willingness to help others in need. I was humbled at times as I considered my thoughts and actions about others. Was I judgemental, did I treat them as an equal when our lives crossed? I hope so, if not then, I'll be more thoughtful now. Thank you Khizr Khan for sharing your life and family with us.

The best book I have read
The best book I have read. I recommend to all my friends but I will not part with my copy.
Every American should read this beautiful book
This isn’t a book about who should have won the 2016 election...it is a reminder of what it means to be an American, and gives us a first hand sweet tale of why immigrants come to the US. I was halfway through when an ISIS supporter ran a truck through pedestrians in NYC this week. It’s easy to fall into fear and build walls, but Mr. Khan and his family beautifully remind us why we keep our arms open to those that want a better life for their families. It’s an engaging story that reads quickly and should be on the reading list for every natural born citizen. It’s easy to take for grated what it means to be an American, and I am appreciative of Mr. Khan’s ability to put this into a fresh perspective that is both memorable and humbling. Mr. and Mrs. Khan, thank you for sharing your story and love for our country.
Inspiring
A truly inspiring story that is at times laugh out loud funny and heartbreaking. Thank you for your sacrifice and for sharing a part of yourself through this book.

Quite a story
This is such an amazing story you wonder how much of it is embellished, but regardless this is a quintessential American tale and makes for quite gripping reading.

very wonderful book
Great account of an immigrant's experience
Khizr Khan, a Muslim who grew up in Pakistan, obtained a law degree there and emigrated with his wife and children to the U. S. where he graduated from Harvard with a degree of law here. His book describes his childhood fascination with provisions of our Constitution and Bill of Rights that guarantee our many freedoms. It explains the longing for freedom that inspires so many to emigrate to America even at great risk, and an immigrant's appreciation of the rights that we take for granted. Our forefathers came here and wrote our Constitution and Bill of Rights to guarantee our freedom here because they had experienced life without these freedoms. I am thinking that today's Americans haven't had those experiences. They may not realize the reasons for the provisions in our Constitution and Bill of Rights and therefore may not be vigilant to preserve them. Thomas Jefferson said "eternal vigilance is the price of freedom".
An American Family
Everyone should read this book! Its a wonder!
Thank you to the Khan Family!!!
Amazing book! I wish I knew the Khan’s personally! I also wish Mr. Khan would run for office. I would vote for him in a heartbeat! Totally agree with the political and religious discussions in this book (BTW, I am Christian) You can tell that Mr. Khan has had a life long love for poetry, because his book has been a joy to read! Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Khan for your sacrifice, service, and love for our country! I am proud that you all are fellow Americans!

This is a beautiful book every American should read
This is a beautiful book every American should read. Sometimes we need to be reminded what our country stands for. We Americans, I believe, tend to take this country for granted. We gave been so lucky. Other countries have been through war, revolutions, dictatorships and other horrible things. Unless you are an American Indian you are an immigrant to this country and your relative may have gone through similar things as Mr. Kahn did in there own country. I am so glad I read this book especially the way things are going on lately. It renewed my spirit as an American. Thank you Mr. Kahn and God Bless your beautiful son!
A Reminder of what it means to be an American
This book is a great reminder of what it means to be an American. Khizr Khan and his family are an inspiration.
" If this book doesn't inspire you to be a better American, I doubt anything will
I bought this, not entirely sure what I was getting myself into, but I was completely overcome with emotion, even from the very first chapter--as Khan relates a powerful story of his first reading of the Declaration of Independence--a radical document, by his telling, and what that document came to mean to him, as a son of Pakistan--another of Britain's colonies--only, as he puts it, so frankly, "...America had apparently figured out a different outcome than we had." If this book doesn't inspire you to be a better American, I doubt anything will. His understanding of the documents our Founding Fathers wrote are not casual--they are a reflection of a man in love with his adopted country and one ready to defend the ideals he came here for: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. That a man could hail from another part of the world and become so loyal to this nation and its ideals is a testimony to the America we all know, remember and love. Bridging the gap in the age of "mean" politics, he makes his argument on Faith and Freedom to every single American, no matter your brand of politics or religion. He so eloquently explains, in the end, why American ideals offer and afford us so much in common--how we are the parts of a sum total that can not be subtracted from--that we all matter, each and every one of us. Khan reminds us what we all know about our nation: that it forever will be a unique place, among the hearts of our people, as it is the land to which we all owe our destinies and our good fortune. I highly recommend this very uplifting book.

An American Family is without question the best book I read in 2017
An American Family is without question the best book I read in 2017. Mr. Kahn reveals for US such gravitas, decency, kindness, humility, and over-all genuine humanism in the face of overwhelming personal loss and sacrifice. Mr. Khizr Khan truly depicts the manifestation of the "Americanism" we claim to be, and can be, on the world stage. I am grateful to Mr. Kahn for writing "An American Family: A Memoir of Hope and Sacrifice" and teaching US how to be an American. He is the US "we, the people" collectively can be. Happy New Year, WORLD and I humbly ask our God, of all living things, for mercy, healing, love and kindness from our entire world, to our entire world, for our entire world in 2018 and beyond. ;`DGO
Wonderful book!
I normally read only novels, but I must say this is one of the best books I have read. So glad that I ordered it in book version rather than Kindle as I will share it. It is beautifully written, tearful at times but gives one an appreciation of what we have as citizens of this great country. Thank you Mr.Kahn for sharing this, as some of it must have been difficult.

Read Mr. Khan's book to remind you of the greatness of America. During a time when we are disillusioned by politics and fearful of what the future holds, Mr. Khan reminds us of all we have, as Americans, to be grateful for and to aspire to. His story, on its face, is a tribute to perseverance and determination. His description of his journey is moving and inspiring. From a fondness of country music and hotdogs to frequent pilgrimages to the Jefferson Memorial and admiration for Ronald Reagan, we have much to learn from this American family.
Really enjoyed this book
Really enjoyed this book. Humbled by the sacrifice of this family. Delighted that they immigrated to the United States and are truly an American family.
A Book every American should read!!!
Well written account of the Khan family and their quest for the privileges and freedoms that Americans take for granted. Mr. Khan's understanding and knowledge of the Constitution is amazing; much better than my own despite living here all my life. Amazing book!!!
beautifully written. Thank you
This is an important and powerful book, beautifully written. Thank you, Mr. Khan, for giving us such an illuminating and profoundly moving gift. I hope we will be wise enough to turn away from the hate, ignorance, and ugliness that Donald Trump espouses and represents.

Khizr is an amazing human being. Humble, intelligent, brave, full of integrity and courage. This country is blessed to have him and his family. We could use a few more thousand like them.
Please Read especially those who support SCROTUS
OMG! If only the resident of the White House would see how much this family has sacrificed. Khizr Kahn has proved himself to be more American than many of us. He is truly an inspiration!
This book tells the amazing story of a Muslim man's endurance
This book tells the amazing story of a Muslim man's endurance, perseverance, and his determination to follow his dreams all the while seeking the heart of God. His family's sacrifice for the country he loves honors all in his life.
Heartfelt and well written!
I read this book for my book club and one of the most interesting stories I have read all year. To see the love and respect this family has as American citizens is a testimony all of us should read to remind us what we have to be thankful for being born an American citizen.
A lesson in the privilege of being an American
Perhaps we need to have an explanation of what it means to be an American given by someone who didn’t have the good fortune to be born into citizenship. One of the two best book I’ve ever read.
Bright, shining family
After seeing Mr. Khan on the Daily Show, I ordered his book on Kindle and began reading right away. I am so glad I did. I am so inspired by Mr. Khan's life - the life of a Muslim American immigrant. Despite all of the hardships along the way, his love of this country shines through in all circumstances. He reminds us of what is RIGHT with America. The loss of his middle son was so sad and tragic but they were proud of his courage and sacrifice. This family paid the highest price that this country has to ask, yet many Americans don't want them here. My grandparents were also immigrants and, while they had a difficult time adjusting, my grandfather always loved America from afar and it was always his greatest dream to come here. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are all beneficiaries of the American dream come true. Mr. and Mrs. Khan are shining examples of why America is great and will be greater when we stop hating each other and try to see the greatness of his country.

Beautiful reminder of why America is and always has been great
Well written book describing an immigrant's journey to becoming an American. This isn't a book about politics, its about the ideals espoused in the constitution which those who have come from lands of tyranny can appreciate and understand perhaps better than anyone born here. Beautifully written!
this is the story of all who believed in the true promise of a better life in America

EXCELLENT...wonderful family
Grief hurts
An inspiring story....to a point. The tenacity of Mr. Khan in acquiring his dreams is the inspiring part. His grief, bitterness, and blame dilute that part of the story. Too bad. I think he is probably a good man. He certainly is worth the read. History will judge the rest.

Excellent book. I would highly recommend this to anyone.
Poignant memoir
Khizr Khan's "An American Family: A Memoir of Hope and Sacrifice" is a poignant memoir that reaffirms the potential of the American dream. As most Americans first came to know Mr. Khan, I saw his memorable speech at the Democratic National Party's 2016 convention. However, this book explores many more themes than just that speech. From his humble beginnings in Pakistan, growing up as a poor farmer's son, to his dream to go to university and become a lawyer and finally his journey to the United States and becoming a citizen. Along the way, we learn of how Mr. Khan and his wife met and fell in love, raised three children, the one son giving his life in service of his country. A true immigrant's tale that will have you cheering him on as he is accepted to Harvard University, the next in tears when he learns of the death of his heroic son, who died protecting his fellow soldiers. This book doesn't care if you are a Republican, Democrat or Independent (I'm the third) and is filled with hope, determination and the author's deep and abiding patriotism for his adoptive homeland. Highly recommended.

Beautifully written memoir of a Muslim family, an American family
One of the most memorable speeches I've seen was Khizr Khan's at the 2016 Democratic convention. As the soft spoken Pakistani-born, Harvard educated lawyer began to speak, his wife stood beside him, grief etched on her face. Projected on the screen behind them was a photo of their son. Captain Humayan Khan was a 27 year old Muslim-American soldier who had enlisted after 9/11. He was killed in Iraq, while saving his fellow soldiers from a suicide bomber in Iraq. The Clinton campaign had invited Khzir Khan to speak, given him complete control over the content, and scheduled him on the final night, in a prime time spot right before Chelsea Clinton. It was a significant decision for Clinton to make, choosing to not only honor a Gold Star Muslim-American family but using a moment when many Americans were watching to remind the entire nation that Muslims also have great patriotism for the United States. In less than 300 words, Khan made an eloquent embrace of the ideas of the Constitution--and a forceful challenge to Donald Trump to read and understand those ideals that define America. When he pulled a dog-eared copy of his own Constitution from his breast pocket, offering to let the Republican nominee borrow it, it galvanized the crowd (and infuriated Trump who would spend the weekend lashing out at the Khans on Twitter and on Sunday news shows). (Spoiler: yes, Khan really has carried a breast-pocket Constitution for years and often gives them as gifts. The memoir ends with that speech, too, including how he wrote it with his wife's help (as we learn in the memoir, she was not only descended from Afghani royalty, but was an intellectual woman in her own right, a former literature professor, fluent in several languages) Many people wanted to know more about Khan after this. They will in this well-written memoir. He describes some interesting members of his self-educated, but poor, farm family in Pakistan and shows village life in the 1950s and 1960s. We see his years at university in the 1970s and his -very traditional- courtship of Ghazala. He shows, even in 1970s, a traditional lifestyle and culture that will be unfamiliar to many readers. He describes his early philosophical inspirations including Persian literature, as well as the meaning he derives from Islam and the Qur'an/Koran. I particularly enjoyed this part--wish there was much more--as I know so little about Islam. It gave me a feeling of pride to read how he felt when, as a university student, he first discovered the U.S. Constitution and how it affected him. He describes their early life in Dubai before Dubai was what it is today, and Houston (which was different, too), and how he eventually wound up at Harvard, then not only "in" America but having become "an American", together with his wife and children. It's a beautiful told story, particularly meaningful against the backdrop of the 2016 election, At the same time, reading about their son--a caring young man who taught disabled children to swim and admired Thomas Jefferson and John McCain--awas almost too painful to read. He was a real hero. Something I really enjoyed was that there are so many kind, intelligent people who have apparently populated Khzir Khan's life. The writing is restrained, eloquent, and surprisingly uplifting in that the Khans' own intellect, idealism and kindness come through on every page. I hope there will be teachers who find a way to bring "An American Family" into their classrooms. It is a book that should be widely read and discussed.
GREAT STORY BUT DO THEY REALLY BELIEVE IN THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE?
I LOVE MANY MUSLIMS AS PEOPLE. MOST OF THEM HAVE JOBS AND PROVIDE SERVICES TO EVERYONE OVER HERE. FOR EXAMPLE MY AUTO MECHANIC IS A MUSLIM AND HE'S VERY HONEST. HE NEVER OVER CHARGES ME LIKE SOME AUTO REPAIR PLACES WILL DO. AND WE HAVE "FREEDOM OF RELIGION" OVER HERE SO I DON'T CARE WHAT IS HIS RELIGION OR BELIEFS......EXCEPT FOR ONE THING....ISLAM TEACHES THAT MOHAMMAD WAS "INFALLIBLE" AND HIS WORDS ARE "UNCHANGEABLE" WHICH MEANS IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO CHANGE ANY OF THE TROUBLESOME BELIEFS LIKE FEMALE MUTILATION AND STONING...IN A WORD..."SHARIA LAW" IS "THE LAW" AS FAR AS MANY MUSLIMS ARE CONCERNED. AND, IN SHARIA LAW THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE IS NOT PERMITTED. THIS IS NOT GOOD BECAUSE WHEN AND IF MUSLIMS BECOME THE MAJORITY OVER HERE IN ANY TOWN OR CITY....THE RELIGION AND THE LEGAL SYSTEM WILL BE COMBINED UNLESS THE MUSLIMS GO AGAINST THE RULES OF THEIR RELIGION. AND THIS IS VERY BAD BECAUSE MUSLIMS DO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST CHRISTIANS AND OTHER RELIGIONS AND MAKE THEM PAY "A TAX" FOR NOT BEING MUSLIM. AS FOR MR. AND MRS. KAHN, I'D LIKE TO ASK THEM..."SINCE YOU SAY YOU BELIEVE IN THE US CONSTITUTION DO YOU BELIEVE IN THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE?" IF THE ANSWER IS "NO" THEN WE HAVE A PROBLEM IF WE ADMIT MORE MUSLIMS INTO THE US. ONE OF OUR CORE BELIEFS OVER HERE IS "SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE" AND THAT'S WHY WE CAN LIVE IN PEACE WITH PEOPLE OF OTHER RELIGIONS. OTHERWISE THERE WOULD BE CONTINUAL STRIFE AND MISTREATMENT OF OTHER RELIGIONS AS WE SEE AND HEAR ABOUT EVERYDAY IN THE MIDDLE EAST. DO WE WANT THAT? I DON'T THINK SO.....
Very dissappointed
I liked the book until I realized it had an agenda that basically ruined it for me.
So inspiring!
I got this book not knowing much about the family and not expecting a very in-depth book or for it to particularly well-written. That sounds kind of dumb, but I am interested in the story of people's lives and have read quite a few biographies and autobiographies and though they are interesting it is obvious that talented people, such as actors, are usually not very good writers. I thought the book was very well-written, and actually checked at the end to see if there was a ghost writer lurking there somewhere. There was obviously a lot of thought and work put into this, it is not something whipped out to make a few bucks. There are a couple of one star reviews, the people who posted them obviously did not read the book because religion and Sharia law and how the author feels about it is in there. There is nothing "scary" about this family. Not much of the book is really about politics, and I think he pretty much keeps to facts. It was interesting though that when he did talk about US politics it was because he admired Reagan and other republicans. But for the most part this IS a story of an American family, and it is interesting, and very well-written.
