American Girl Baking: Recipes for Cookies, Cupcakes & More

Six of my granddaughters have gotten very interested in baking with their mother and with me. This cookbook is a great starter book with easy to follow directions and delicious desserts. They have their own aprons, baking supplies and a baker’s hat. They are developing a lot of fond memories in the kitchen. Their brothers and sisters are eating everything before it all comes out of the oven. The only issue is that it is difficult to keep the cookbook open. It keeps closing. Follow Up: One day of the week is designated as ‘Baking Day’. We form teams and rate the recipes chosen by the other team. This is a great way to spend summer days. Sticky notes are used to mark the recipes and are color-coded to indicate the food category usage. For example, there are different colors for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack and dessert. They also indicate how hard it is to use the recipe with a scale of 1 - 3 with one being the easiest. We do not use many numbers to rate each recipe. Also, we use large, metal binder clips to keep the book open.

My daughter got this baking cookbook for her birthday, a week ago, and has already made 4 different cookie recipes. They have all been wonderful! She loves this book and has plans to make more things soon.

My 7 year old daughter loves American girl and recently has gotten into baking so I thought this cookbook would be a good fit. She is beyond happy with this cookbook and so am I! She wanted real recipes, from scratch, and that's exactly what this book is. No use of mixes or decorating store bought treats. These are great, real recipes. So far We've made the raspberry chocolate tartlets and the strawberry cheesecake cupcakes and both have turned out excellent.

So happy I purchased this. My 12 year old niece loves it. It's well written easy to follow recipes along with excellent pictures of what your result should look like allows her to improve and expand her baking skills. The recipes are also things kids in her age group find interesting and when they are able to create what they see in the picture it builds confidence to explore the world of baking further. The educational value of this book along with the fun factor make this a great purchase.

We have loved every recipe we have tried so far. Fun and easy. -a lot of the same ingrediants are used throughout the book so if you buy the staples you're set!

Very nice cookbook. Really for a more serious baker as the recipes do call on having a variety of ingredients on hand, more than just embellishment of your standard boxed desserts. This is great for any kid that is looking to get into more detailed, "grown-up" baking. Just be ready to have all ingredients on hand.

Our 9 year old daughter loves to bake and this was the perfect gift for Christmas. She was so excited to get this and has made several recipes in the last couple months. If you get this for your daughter you should have ear plugs handy because she will probably shriek for joy at the combination of cooking and OMG American Girl!!! You will totally be the best mom, dad, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, grandpa, grandma, friend, cousin, or random person in the world.

We've only made two recipes from this book, so far, which was a birthday gift: the devil's chocolate cupcakes and the chocolate layer cake. The cupcakes were good but the layer cake was so dry! The instructions say to bake it for 45 to 50 minutes! I am not much of a baker and normally bake from a box so I did not question the recipe and baked the cake that long the first time. Of course the cake turned out to be a brick! So I remade the cake and this time decided to lower the baking time by 10 minutes only baking it for 35 minutes and the cake was still very dry. I'm disappointed that such a huge error could be in this book and it makes me leery of other recipes.

Have tried a few recipes and so far they have been great! The only thing we have noticed on a few recipes is that is will say it makes a certain amount of servings but it actually made less. Overall great book for the girls!

Beautifully written and illustrated/photographed cookbook! Every page looks scrumptious! Ordered this for an eleven year old who loves to bake and she squealed with excitement when she opened her package. I’m already planning to borrow it to make the “Cheesecake Cupcakes”!

The William-Sonoma American Girl cookbooks are perfect for my daughter. She's 11 and has been cooking for a long time so none of the recipes are too difficult and the recipes always taste great. I use it myself.

Love this recipe book! I got it for my six year old and though I have to help with every recipe, it’s great for kids. It’s not lame like some of those kid baking books. It really teaches them how to bake from scratch, which my daughter loves to do! Great pictures! We are going through all of the recipes and are determined to bake them all!

I bought this cookbook for my Goddaughter who loves to bake. Before wrapped it, I spent some time looking through the recipes. They all looked amazing, so I made sure to write down the ones I liked on her birthday card. Can't wait to taste them.

I actually bought this for my 8 years old son who loves to cook & BAKE! Unfortunately, there's not really a bakebook made for "boys," so I just opt for this one & we can care less that it's a book for "girls!" My son wanted to make the Chocolate Chip Cookie Sandwhich, & that exactly what he did! It was delicious! We half the frosting to frost only half of the cookies, & the other we left them just as is. The actual sandwhich was a little sweet to my taste, but eating the cookie by itself was delicious! We- he.. is so excited to go through the rest of the book!!

I am outraged by the entire chapter on madeleins. This is not a commonly made or appreciated cookie in most households and it requires a special mold that almost no American household will have!! How convenient that American Girl just happens to sell a madeleins kit for another $40!! This is really shameless. Also many of the recipes seem poorly tested and thought out. I don't know how you make Snickedoodles without creme of tarter. And how many variations of macaroons are you going to count as separate recipes?!

The best kids baking book. Beautiful pages, well detailed instructions. Instructions even tell kids when to get a parent's help. Delicious recipes too. Just like what you expect from a real cookbook. My 7 year old made the carrot cake cupcakes right away. Very easy for her to follow along and were delicious!!!

I'm giving it a five because my daughter really likes it, and it was for her (she's eight). Recipes seem pretty easy to follow so far. I'd like to see a few more in there, really, but there's a pretty good sampling of different desserts.

My 6 year old niece asked specifically for this book for her birthday and was so excited to go through it and find recipes she can make with her mom.

This was a gift for my 9 year old niece who was interested in baking, but only baked from those premix boxes sold. The book is clearly written, the recipes are not too complicated, nice photography. Along with the book, I also gave her some baking supplies (a wooden rolling pin, a cooling rack and a muffin pan). I did notice that many recipes required rolling the dough out, but in the suggested baking supplies a rolling pin was not mentioned. My niece already baked the elephant ears from the book and very proud of her accomplishment.

My Granddaughter was so happy when she received this for Christmas. It has awesome & easy recipes for kids to make.

Wonderful book for our 5 year old for christmas

Ordered this for my 7 year old niece. My sister says they have made quite a few things and have loved them all. Easy for her to do with both girls (7 and 4) It does require supervision, obviously.

I bought this for my 9-year old daughter as a Christmas present and gave it to her early. She wants to be a pastry chef when she grows up so I also got her a kids' apron, chef jacket and chef hat. She put it all on, picked the Snickerdoodle recipe from this book and went to town in the kitchen. Granted, she forgot to put the flour in that first batch of cookies but I've never seen a child have so much fun! We've since recreated four more recipes in this book and they were all phenomenal (especially the red velvet cupcakes!). The recipes are concise enough for a preteen or teen to follow and the ingredients are basic enough to not require a major shopping trip. I HIGHLY recommend this book.
