Great for the first-time ACT prep

Barron's has created a very nice test prep book from a qualified teacher. For the more advanced test-taker I would recommend the 'ACT 36' book, but this is a great guide for starting out and, being a book dedicated to "English, Reading, and Writing", it's especially good for students who need some extra focus in those areas. I think when you take the test the first time you don't want to hyper-focus on details and stress too much about it. If you are taking the test as a freshman or sophomore, for example, this workbook provides great practice and review in all three verbal sections. It prepares a student for understanding the format and timing of the ACT's English Test, Reading Test, and Writing Test, and includes a full-length self-assessment test (with an answer key and explanations) to help students assess their strengths and weaknesses. This guide also helps students hone their essay-writing skills and, to quote the description, is "guided by the author's instruction in tackling the ACT essay, timing plans, and answering the essay prompt thoroughly and effectively." This is invaluable detail that many students do not get from their school teachers and would not get without a study guide. Overall a very nice and affordable study guide that is sure to help any student looking for some additional help with this test and, specifically, the reading and writing sections. Highly recommend.

Great Tips and Lists

I am a high school English teacher and ACT prep instructor, so I really wanted to check out this concentrated manual by Barron's. I have another brand's prep material as well, but want a variety to compare their approaches. The thing that I appreciate about this book over other manuals is the way it gives specific vocabulary lists, grammar drills, and explanation sheets. That is something that many other books either don't offer inside, or you have to pay more to get a study board that goes with the book. I really would have liked more specific writing tips that are specific to the ACT Writing prompts. I think they give excellent all-round writing suggestions and approaches, but would have loved an even broader look at the prompts. Overall though, this is a great manual and I'll use it for a resource and loan to my students from my own library.

Excellent resource

I can’t say enough about this fantastic workbook. User-friendly and compact, this will provide students with comprehensive self assessments, drills, and practice tests to get them in shape for the English language arts portions of the ACT. Includes chapter summaries, test taking guidelines and tips on how to make the best of the time given for the exam. There are upbeat and inspiring tips throughout the entire workbook which made it a favorite go to in our home for our kids preparing for the exam. Can’t forget the Answer Keys which are invaluable. Get your hands on this well laid out practice book and ace the ACT!

Helpful resource

Reading and writing are my daughter's achilles heels and while she is not taking the test this year, this is a great resource for her to start getting ready. She has a weekly private tutor, who is a former teacher, helping her getting ready. This workbook started helping her to realize the expected level of competency and skill required for the ACT exam. She's not there yet though. Part of the prep is identifying the types of questions and how to answer them concisely within the allotted time. This workbook has been very valuable to her in getting her started down the road of preparation.

A great tool to prepare

As we all know, the ACT test is extremely important in helping decide what type of college you will get into and the scholarships you will get. I bought for my high school junior and he used this book before his last test and his score improved by two points. I hope as he continues to use it his scores will get even higher in his senior year.

Covers What Is Needed

I chose this for my daughter to help her hone her writing a bit more. She isn't preparing for the ACT but does need to keep up on her English since she travels overseas often. The book is easy to use and well presented.

Great prep for the price

For $10, you have nothing to lose---as long as you can get your student to use it. The sample test alone is invaluable practice. For more (free) information about the ACT, be sure to check out Khan Academy's website (videos, discussions) too.

Great easy way to wrap your brain around the ACT

Don't go into a test like this unprepared. The more you know what to expect and how to prepare, the better you will do. You can improve your score, and a book like this is a great way to start that journey. Practice tests alone make it worth the price.

Good for the college bound HS student

This is a a very good workbook for students preparing for the ACT. WE have an exchange student who is using it, so she can better prepare for the English portion and she says its has been very very helpful and this from someone who 1st language is not English.
