Every porcine wonder was once a piglet! Celebrate the joy of a new arrival with this endearing picture-book prequel to the New York Times best-selling Mercy Watson series.
Mr. Watson and Mrs. Watson live ordinary lives. Sometimes their lives feel a bit too ordinary. Sometimes they wish something different would happen. And one day it does, when someone unpredictable finds her way to their front door. In a delightful origin story for the star of the Mercy Watson series, a tiny piglet brings love (and chaos) to Deckawoo Drive — and the Watsons’ lives will never be the same.

Different format than others. Our toddlers are in love
Our two-year-old twin toddlers are in LOVE with Mercy Watson (they just turned three -- probably started Mercy at around 18 months, if that helps parents gauge their kids' readiness.). The repetition and brilliant illustrations are just right to push their cognitive limits, but they understand enough that the stories still satisfy even at their young age. When a new Mercy Watson book became available, I pre-ordered right away, without realizing this is not a typical Mercy Watson beginning chapter book, but a large-format picture book. The story is remarkably simple, but they just can't get enough. We've read it several times. It is fun to see the phenomenal illustrations in a larger format, but sort of funny that DiCamillo stripped it so far back to this very simple story. And yet... she is magical, because they just love it.
Mercy Watson Here She Comes!
Oink! Oink! Did you hear that sound? That's the sound of Mercy Watson walking down Deckawoo Drive finding her way to the Watson's house. It's usually an ordinary day at the Watson's house. Suddenly a piglet appears on their doorstep. Then the mischief begins and so does the story of how Mercy came to be the most famous piglet in the town. We give Mercy 5 stars because it is a funny and entertaining book for elementary aged children. Eugenia the neighbor can't believe there's a pig next door. The illustrations are hilarious and make the book exciting to read. Kate DiCamillo uses good descriptive words such as extraordinary, absurd and unpredictable. Overall, we think this book is extraordinary! We think you will love this book too! By: Mrs. Erfourth's 2nd Grade Readers
Perfect Porcine Prequel
This adorable picture book gives the backstory of Mercy Watson, the pig, who lives with Mr. and Mrs. Watson. Before all of her adventures with her "parents" she had to become a part of the family. The illustrations are absolutely lovely. We are huge fans of Mercy Watson in this house and were very excited to add this picture book to our collection! It lived up to all our hopes and expectations!
Honestly, not a ton of actual story here, but my kids love it
Not a ton of actual story, but it does a good job of "setting the scene" for the Mercy Watson chapter books that come after. My kids love it because the idea of a baby piglet being accidentally bumped out of a truck and ending up on a middle-aged couple's doorstep is adorable and unusual, and the pictures are amazing! (Two big thumbs up for Chris Van Dusen... we LOVE LOVE LOVE his books and illustrations!!)
Absolutely adorable! A must for Mercy fans!
If you and your children love the Mercy Watson series, you will absolutely love this picture book! Mercy as a piglet! It’s adorable and sweet. It’s only been in our house for a few hours and I’ve read it to my kids (6 and 4.5) three times!
Love this author
Love mercy books my five year old who loves pigs started getting them at the library because of the pig on the front, but we love the stories even though the were a little old my big boys 3-5 would sit and listen to them because the author is excellent at making the words flow. They also love the pictures. this one is going to be a bit with all of them, but I got it for the baby because I believe it will build her interest in reading. Every library should be full of Kate DiCamilo books!
So Endearing!
I am a 1st grade teacher. I read the Mercy Watson series to my class at the start of the school year. We all fall in love with Mercy and all the characters! My kids were so excited to find out how Mercy ended up with Mr. and Mrs. Watson when I read "A Piglet Named Mercy" to them today. I can enthusiastically recommend this book to all Mercy Watson enthusiasts!
Adorable picture book
Your beginning reader will love this picture book showing exactly how Mercy the piglet came to live with her human parents, Mr. and Mrs. Watson. The Lincoln sisters are also present next door on Deckawoo Drive! Full color, large picture book with dust jacket - classy and gorgeous. Perfect for your family library or for gift-giving.
Short, but a great introduction to Mercy!
My kids love the Mercy Watson series so this book was a must have for them. The book is definitely geared to a younger age than the chapter books and although I was disappointed at how short the book was, my kids didn't seem to care (they're 3 and 5). This book quickly became a favorite, they love hearing about how Mercy became a part of the Watson family. The illustrations are just as fantastic. We really love everything about all the Mercy Watson books and would love to read even more of her crazy adventures!
A wonderful story about love
Although late to the game, I'm now a big fan of Kate DiCamillo. Her stories always go straight to the heart and this one is no different. I purchased this one to place in my Free Little Library outside my house. I'm hoping the book will come back to me one day so I can share it with my grandkids who are just a wee bit too young. If not, I'll be buying another!

Fun and beautiful book!
This book is absolutely adorable! I love that it’s a picture book with precious illustrations, but that the author sticks to her use of great vocabulary words so small children learn as they sit on their parent’s laps! More children’s books need to use creative and illustrious vocabulary so that children learn big and exciting words! Also, my daughter’s name is Mercy and she loves pigs, so this book is a dream come true for her!
Not Kate D’s best
We love love love all of the Mercy Watson and Tales from Deckawoo Drive books, but this one was slightly disappointing. There wasn’t a great deal of depth to the plot. I suppose it would be good for kids 4 and under, but my 5 and 7 year old weren’t as entertained by this as they were by the author’s other, longer books.
Children's reaction
I read to children in the classroom. I received "A Piglet Named Mercy" this week and read it to 3 kindergarten classes. Everybody loved it. As with all of the Mercy Watson books the text is funny and the illustrations are wonderful. It would be great if this was the first in a whole new series of Mercy Watson books
Great for the Classroom
My second graders love Mercy and all the characters in these books. We even use them for opinion pieces, who is the funniest and best character or which event was the funniest. Great writer and Great Book!
Baby Mercy!
My students and I adored this book about baby Mercy Watson and how she became a Watson in the first place! You don’t need to read the other books in the Mercy series to understand or love this one, but it may make you want to read them anyway!
Fun Origin Story
We're so glad they decided to make this story. We love all of the Mercy books and were sad they might be done! This would be a great introduction to the bigger 'chapter' books.
Another Mercy Watson book!
We love the Mercy Watson books and even though this is a picture book instead of a chapter book, it doesn’t disappoint. Since it’s a picture book, we get to see more of Chris Van Dusen’s awesome illustrations!
Cute young child story
Appealing illustrations. Models treating animals with love and caring. Short enough for a quick bedtime story. Would be best for youngest children just leaning to e joyride the books.
Super reading material for children
Nothing to dislike great book for children who enjoy reading thumps up to author ad everyone who reads it book was donated to school after child read it

A great series for read aloud time or for little to practice reading to you.

Okay book
My 5 and 7 year old loves Mercy Watson books. This is lackluster as far as details and character development. But it’s cute to see Mercy as a baby.
Wonderful story
Kate Dicamillo doesn’t disappoint in this Mercy Watson prequel.

Na
Not as good as all the other mercy books. A little disappointed in this one.
Great book but poorly packed
Love the book. It must have been torn before the shipped. The box was just fine and everything else in it was as well. Very disappointed. If I had time to send it back for a new one I would have

Great fun story. My Grandsons love the Mercy stories!!
Good intro story, but a bit short
Only about the length of one or two of the regular small chapter books. Same funny theme and characters as the series.
Great storytelling

Adorable Book That Had My Toddler Giggling
Kate DiCamillo is such a great writer and these Chris Van Dusen illustrations are wonderful! We won a free Goodreads Giveaway copy of this new book that tells the story of how Mercy came to be a Watson. I am so glad we did, because my toddler LOVES this book. She wanted to sit down and read it the moment we opened our bookmail. She especially loved the pages where Mercy is wrapped up like a baby. Oh, the giggles! This book is already a #1 in the Children's Adoption books category, and this adoption-loving family is glad to see family and friends embrace Mercy with love! We will be enjoying this one for many more days to come. I highly recommend this book for Mercy Watson fans or those who are about to be her fans once they are introduced!
Cute story for my 3 and 7 year olds
Two daughter, 7 and 3, love this book! I follow a blogger who posts book list that are great for reading aloud. I had seen this book on the blog many times but some reason never checked it out from our library. I went out on a Liam and bought it from my nephews book fair (online, without looking at the actual book). I’m glad I ddI!! My girls love it!! When I first received the book I was a little disappointed. And thought it would be too boring for my 7 year old. But she loves it and requests it just as much as her younger 3 year old sister. We have the follow-up stories in our amazon cart for the next time we have rewards points. I homeschool our girls and we have LOTS of books. We read lots of books daily. We check out lots of books weekly from the library. We have read lots of books . And like the recommendation of the blog I follow (Read Aloud Revival) we love it and will add to our list of books we chose to buy for gifts and recommendations when friends asks us for book ideas. The simple story and repetition are great for my 3 year old. She loves repeating phrases that are repeated in the book. And giggles when the pig is wrapped up and being help like a baby. Bonus: the print is big enough that grandma can read it when she is over and forgets her glasses 😂!!
Adorable
Mr and Mrs Watson lived perfectly ordinary lives until Mercy arrived. Now life on Deckawoo Lane will never be unpredictable again. This prequel is my introduction to Mercy Watson and I’ve already fallen in love with her. I don’t think that I’ve been introduced to a pig this adorable since I met Wilbur and Babe. As a picture book, Mercy’s origin story isn’t especially detailed but it was enough for me to want to continue her story. Because I’m me, one of my takeaways from this book is concern for all of the pigs that didn’t fall off the back of the truck. Chris Van Dusen’s illustrations gave off such a wholesome 1950’s vibe, with the possible exception of cantankerous Eugenia Lincoln, that it felt like I was reading a classic rather than a recent release. I’m expecting sisters, Eugenia and Baby Lincoln, will compete to become my favourite human character as I continue this series.
Darling Story
We've been reading the Mercy Watson chapter books, and then found this one. I might? maybe? Like this one best of all! It's just so perfectly done. I love Chris Van Dusen, always, and the illustrations in here are just adorable. I love the cheery and cozy color palette. Baby Mercy is so, so cute. The story is easy to read again and again as it has just the right words and not too many or too few to tell the sweet story. I've been reading with my 5 and 7 year olds, and both of them love both this book and the chapter books.
Cute, But Not Much Actual Story
I have not heard of the Mercy books before. Therefore, I had not expectations before reading this book. In all honesty there isn’t much story to A PIGLET NAMED MERCY. The most interesting parts of the story are when the next door neighbors show up. Eugenia and Baby Lincoln are more interesting than any of the other characters in the book. The illustrations are well done, but the overall story is just kind of “blah.” Cute book with not much story.
Mercy Watson's Arrival on Deckawoo Drive
We all loved reading about how the porcine wonder arrived on Deckawoo Drive. My kids especially loved the illustrations of piglet Mercy. This is a great addition to our Mercy Watson collection!
Porcine Wonder Fans will Love
A delight for Mercy Watson fans. Even my older kids enjoyed this book - Chris van Dusen’s illustrations are, as always, irresistible. The Kindle edition, while not my first choice for picture books is well formatted and convenient for streaming to a larger screen for family story night.
Disappointing - seems like more of a grab for money than real contribution to series
I was disappointed. The "real" Mercy books were funny, a bit edgy, good plots. This book had an uninteresting plot and merely served to introduce characters in a way that would only be very much of interest to people who'd already read the real Mercy books. Waste of my money.
Beautiful pictures
Nice funny story with beautiful pictures for little kids. Preschool 2+.
Loved
Loved this story. Beautifully illustrated and wonderful message.
Oh, great! Now my daughter is going to start lobbying for a Pet Pig again.
Absolutely adorable! Easy to read.
Love
My kids loved it! Such a great series.
