Mitford’s longtime Episcopal priest, Father Tim, has retired. But new challenges and adventures await when he agrees to serve as interim minister of a small church on Whitecap Island. He and his wife, Cynthia, soon find that Whitecap has its own unforgettable characters: a church organist with a mysterious past, a lovelorn bachelor placing personal ads, a mother battling paralyzing depression. Whitecap has more than its fair share of challenges, but in the end, Father Tim and Cynthia find that Mitford is never far away when circumstances back home keep their phone ringing off the hook...

my last Mitford book for now

As much as I have loved the otherwise charming characters and town of Mitford, it is obviously is written for White readers. The only people of colour are in subservient roles and their voices and skin tones are described in detail whereas other characters are not. Granted, this all takes place in the South so is somewhat expected but it's become distracting enough to outweigh the joy.

Another great chapter in the Mitford Series!

I love all of Jan Karon's Mitford series. I'll be sad if she doesn't keep writing about these charming characters and their quaint lives. I especially love Father Tim and Cynthia and their Christian love. The Bible verses and the quoting of the liturgies are so familiar to me and it's refreshing to read these pages with no sex or profanity, yet they are filled with true love. The guys at the Grill are so funny and sound like some folks I know! The only thing about this edition was that it was sent to my i pad; I'm sure it went to my kindle as well, but I hardly read from it anymore as I like the i pad better. I don't know what happened, but all throughout the book the numeral "1" appeared everywhere at the end of words in place of the letter that should have been there. Annoying after a while but I still loved the story. I don't know if it went out that way to other readers or not but it was strange! Great series, though-

Wonderful!

I am reading the entire Mitford series and, oddly enough, this has become my favorite. I loved the new characters and the new setting, while maintaining close ties with Mitford. I loved the excitement and the wonderful, simple theology. I must say, however, that the Kindle version was VERY difficult to read. (I hope Amazon reads this. I want my money back!) The last letter of many of the words is replaced by the number "1" and followed by "...." It was extremely distracting and interrupted the flow of the book while I figured out what word belonged there. On some pages, this happened multiple times. Thank goodness Ms. Karon' s genius shone past this and, once again, she delivered a winner.

Another reason to keep reading

Yet another great book in the Mitford series! A good solid story with characters you feel you know personally. The delight is in the details of the story, the way it makes you better appreciate the details of your own story. I love the way Jan Karon makes the reader feel like you've known these characters all your life and look forward to reading what happens next!

Getting Better All The Time!

It has been a long time since a series not in the fantasy genre has captivated my attention and imagination the way Ms. Karon's Mitford series has. As a former resident of WNC, I find her firsthand insight to the people, the region and the atmosphere to be right on the mark. I love the fact that I could step out of my own doorstep and see each and every character in the series as my friends and neighbors. Well Done! In A New Song, Ms. Karon continues the great thread she has begun and the shift of Fr. Tim and Cynthia to Whitecap from Mitford only adds fresh vitality to this series. The characters are solid, the dialog very real and the book moves from the very serious to the sublime. *the deep sea fishing trip was so funny, I had to put the book aside and surrender to a laughing fit....thank you for that! * If you have enjoyed Mitford up to now, then by all means read A New Song. I fervently hope that Ms. Karon continues to bring us the news from Mitford for some time to come.

Very satisfied

I have not read this book yet but was very happy it was in great shape. I bought it to go with the 1-4 vol set I purchased , my originals got wet in a house water damage. I manage to save novel 6

A real delight....

A New Song continues the delightful travel through the rest of their lives of Fr. Tim and Cynthia Kavanaugh. Those who think that the cryptic ending indicates that Fr. Tim has gone home to the Lord are in error. At least the author says so in several interviews I have read. "Why would I do that?", she asks. The next book is to be the story of their wedding. This was passed over rather quickly in an earlier book, but now we will get to attend. Moving to the coast of N. Carolina from the mountains to be the interim priest at St. John's, Fr. Tim find a church and a community much in need of him and God's healing grace. I won't detail all of the new characters or what has happened to some of the Mitford people. Buy it, enyoy it, and savor the wisdom and insight that it contains.

A Comfortable Return to a Beloved Home

If you loved the four original Mitford books, you will love coming home to your old friends. Reading this next volume in the series was like putting on an old, comfy pair of shoes - it just felt right. Father Tim and Cynthia have to uproot their life and move to a new locale, but we don't lose touch with all their family and friends back in Mitford. The author keeps us up to date with the daily goings-on in the town, whilst we meet new people in Whitecap and experience new places, people and events on the tiny island that the Kavanaghs now call home. I'm surprised that five volumes of one series can keep me entertained, but Jan Karon seems to have the formula down. This is a nice, gentle read and I look forward to the next installment.

I found Father Tim this year (2014) and have been reading the Mitford Series in order. A New Song is my absolute favorite! The first four took a bit before I was totally into each book although I ended up being charmed by all the antics of the Mitford gang each time! A New Song hooked me on the first page! I loved Father Tim and Cynthia`s year in Whitecap, all the new characters along with their interactions with the former parishioners in Mitford! I highly recommend A New Song!

Love this setting!

Living in a small coastal community myself, I enjoyed seeing Father Tim in a different setting. It also made me realize that rural America is quite similar whether mountains, beaches,or delta!

There is Love , alive! and waiting for me to enter in! I am blessed!

I feel at home with these precious people, yes, and Barnabus! I’ m 81, its 2:30 a.m.. .I’ am content. Thank you!

Wonderful

I have read all nine Mitford books, having originally purchased them for my elderly mother. We both enjoyed them quite a bit. How rare to find stories that can be read by all of the family without embarrassment and yet are not Pollyanne-ish. Christianity well presented, and from a particular perspective, without marginalizing any of the other branches. Believable situations, excellent humor (I'm still retelling Uncle Billy jokes). I highly recommend them all.

Excellent!

I am so enjoying the world of Father Tim! All the characters are people I want to meet! I'd love to live in Mitford! Keep the books coming, Jan!

Got to read

Wonderful light reading. Series is delightful. My second reading after many years.

One of my favorites

This book had lovely stories that added faith and scripture to the story. Its is now my favorite books from this series. A must read.

Wonderful, of course

In this 5th book of the Mitford series, Father Tim takes a short-time interim pastor position away from his beloved Mitford. Even though he's away from the wonderful folks back home, some have a surprise visit, and there are side stories from Mitford, so don't worry that it will all be different. The story is lovely and the characters in this little town are as personable. Even the difficult ones are worth getting to know. News from these characters comes into the following Mitford books. It's a Jan Karon book, so how can you go wrong.

Best books in a long time.

The series is wonderful! The first books are better than the lasts but a new song is an exceptional good book. It might be my favorite. I would suggest reading them in order, by publication date not what's printed in as "in order". I doubt if one could find a better author to read than Jan Karon. I have reccomended her books to everyone and have taken some of them to my friends, and as I dont have a full set, I guess they liked them well enough to keep them!

Jan Karon is a gifted, inspirational author!

One of the best chapters that I have ever read in any book is found in A New Song. I loved the entire book, but the chapter entitled Mighty Waters, brought me such joy. Father Tim and company, are very real to me. Of course I've read all of the Mitford Saga books, but the latest one is the best. I do have a question....A line on page 102 refers to "crocodiles" sunning themselves. Could this be an error? Doesn't Ms. Karon mean alligators? I don't believe that we have crocodiles in North America. If anyone can answer this question, please do.

Five Stars

These books are cleverly written and transport you to Mitford. Never get tired of this series.

Thanks Jan karon...

Like the other Mitford Books, this is delightful.

Love these...

Such a good series... I'm on to the next with bated breath!!!! The every day details and thoughts just bring these characters to life for me.

So so sweet

Always a treat. I love the innocence and kindness represented in these characters. I’m always saying ‘I want to move to Mitford!😊’

The Mitford Series is Wonderful!

I am thoroughly enjoying the Mitford Series. Each book is better than the last. If you have not read the series, I urge you to do so.

Tears of Joy Abound

A beautiful story that highlights the love God has freely given to everyone. Delightful characters abound...it will reinvigorate your faith!

One of the Best

I've read this series at least 5 times and this is one of my favorites. Father Tim is in the business of changed lives, and God uses him again to see this happen. There are interesting characters and happenings throughout the book.

I wasn't prepared to like it so much!

Like other Karon fans, I was attached to Mitford, its charm and refreshing cast of characters. I wasn't sure I'd like Father Tim and Cynthia's being transplanted to another place. However, Karon worked her usual magic and I was completely taken in with the new location, stories and characters. If you like sweet, gentle fiction, read Karon's books --- read them in order so you can appreciate Father Tim and the changes that come to him in mid-life. I'll be waiting for Number 6! Way to go, Ms. Karon!

More Mitford...Unabridged, please!

I am an audiobook listener and I am loving the warm, unthreatening environment created in my car by the voice of the reader of A New Song. What a nice place to settle into on my way home from work everyday. My request: If Ms. Karon, or her publisher ever reads this, pls give us the other books in this series in UNABIDGED cassette format. Why would we want to miss any part of the stories? If you get them out by this same reader, I, for one, will buy them all. There is a derth of acceptable listening fiction out there...believe me. This book is heaven sent. More of the same, pls...UNABRIDGED!

This is the best book series there is

This is the best book series there is. The characters are so real and such fun. Jan Karon has a way of seeing into the heart of everyone she writes about and gets them just right. Everyone over 40 should read this series - men and women alike. The character of Father Tim gives us all hope! He is genuine.

Great service as well.

I love Jan Karon’s books & was glad to get one reasonably priced in good condition.

Enjoying the Series

This author is a great writer. I feel apart of the community of which she writes.

good series

nice place to be

Beloved Mitford Series

Most wonderful fiction series I've read in many years! I love Jan Karon's Mitford Season, and can't wait until the next ones come out. The characters have become so real to me, I feel like I've known them all my life. I am an avid reader and truly dread coming to the end of each of these books. It's hard to find good Christian fiction, which are loved even by those who do not usually read Christian literature, but these fit the bill! I give them for gifts to many.

Father Tim Kavanaugh is a winner again

My wife introduced me to Jan Karon some time ago saying I needed something different in my reading selections, less drama and fighting and violence and she was right. Over the times I have had a chance to get and enjoy Mitford, my life has been filled with more plain joy in reading and watching in my mind's eye the life of my favorite Episcopal Minister and his life. There's only one problem I have not been smart enough to read them in chronological order. In this story, New Song, Father Tim and Cynthia are taken out of their pleasure zone of retirement and enjoyment of the joys Mitford has brought to theme 9n order to take over a seaside parish until they receive a new minister. You meet all the folks from the earlier books like Dooley and Harley and all the folks and take them through the period when they are distressing over the loss of Father Tim. However his adventures through counseling desperate people and enjoying life and settling parish problems is the type of pure enjoyment that Jan Karon has brought to me and I hope to others. Try to read them in order if you are just starting for there are hours of pure enjoyment awaiting you..

Misleading

It was listed as new product, with updated cover. It is neither. It's quite worn and has the previouos owner's name inscribed inside with pen. Pages yellowed. Cover worn. Will return.

A New Song (Mitford) was my first book by Jan Karon in the series.

The book was recommended by the Real Simple magazine. I like books that are calming that have stories about everyday people and their lives. This book has that and it is informative of Father Tim and his family and the town and people around him. Their challenges and succeses and failures, their secrets, fears and loves. She paints a descriptive picture of the characters and their excentricities and the town. I have purchased the next book in the series and look forwards to reading it.

like new as described.

like new description was exact. it looked like a new book and arrived in a few days.

Mitford creates home

The books of the Mitford series come alive with characters that draw you into their homes, hearts and lives in rich, vivid hues of color.

Keep following FatherTim

Book club book. Jan Karon never disappoints.

A wonderful contiuation in this family's lives with their love and faithfulness

Ms. Karon has developed still another wonderful phase in the life of this couple and their adopted family. I hope she will continue letting us know how their lives develop as the children grow up and find their own ways to happiness.

Wonderful!

I love the way the story weaves around familiar and also new characters. I love Ms. Karon's writing - always with class, integrity and having the Gospel clearly explained in all of her books!

One of the best in the series as usual filled with pathos loving. friendships

Laughter and sadness anticipation and interesting characters Of all types and lots of people who are exchanged after meeting Father TIm.

A new song

Ms Karon captivates her audience and they're utterly spellbound and under her control. Father Tim and his followers leap forth from the page as a long-lost friend.

Uplifting, humorous and heart-warming......

Wonderful author. Jan Karon.....fun, inspiring read....great variety of characters

... as they carry on thru the series they seem like old

Characters really well developed and as they carry on thru the series they seem like old friends

Heart-warming Series

as expected

A lovely time spent in Mitford

A balm to the soul. A treasure. A book to be savored and treasured. In our crazy world the Mitford series reminds us what is truly important.

the entire series is inspiring and well worth reading more ...

the entire series is inspiring and well worth reading more than once.

New Song is a new feeling.

Experiencing life with Tim and Cynthia outside Mitford takes some getting used to it, but as always, they bring light and richness to life wherever they go. This used to be my least favorite of her books, but now I cherish it as much as all the others. Just as Tim and Cynthia needed to open themselves to new possibilities and experiences and challenges, and were deepened and enriched, so I also was deepened and enriched by re-reading this gem.

Great book

This was a lovely and engaging story that held my attention through to the end. Very uplifting, and rewarding use of my time to read.

MY FAVORITE BOOK SERIES

I have read all 8 Mitford books at least 8 times. I bought this copy "A New Song" because the pages of my original copy have aged and turned brown and are stating to fall out of the paperback I know I will again read the series and want the complete set. As the other books need replacing I will purchase them at Amazon.

A definite home run for Jan Karon

Very thought provoking! I love the way she weaves the gospel of Love through out her story. You feel like your right there living with the village, and enjoying every new friend as they are introduced into the story! A great read!

Typos, typos....

These are pleasant, lightweight and sometimes even inspiring books. The characters seem real, and they make organized religion look almost palatable. The thing is, I downloaded this for my Kindle and it is FULL of typos. I've noticed this happens often with e-books, but not with commercial ones such as this.

Jan Karon does not disappoint in continuing to let us visit Mitford & catch ...

Jan Karon does not disappoint in continuing to let us visit Mitford & catch up in the lives of Fr. Tim, et al., even those unfortunate enough to not already be familiar with the books will enjoy as she is able to impart background to the characters & plots that it also works as a stand alone novel as do the earlier ones

series

I bought this book to go with my collection in a series by Jan Karon. I have not read it yet as it was missing form collection. I have read one of her books and found lit to be so interesting I had a hard time putting it down. I am a romantic and a Christian and I like the touch of romance she puts in her writings.

Still loving this series

This was a change from the town of Mitford in this series but some more wonderful characters were met. These new people were just as interesting or as quirky as the residents of Mitford. A good change from the mountains of Mitford to the coastal town of Whitecap Island.

easy, breezy summer reading

Unlike most of the other reviewers, this is my first Mitford book. I'll admit, I bought it because it seemed like a pleasant read and it was 50% off. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I could have done without the author's slight preachiness, but it *is* a book about a preacher, I suppose. It was a quick and easy read, with lots of memorable characters that make me look forward to the next installment. I found it difficult to forget adorable baby Jonathan. I wanted to comfort the tortured Morris. I guess the best way to describe A New Song is that it is cute. It paints a "cute" image of small-town USA.

Delightful book

I am only 2/3 the way through this book, but as number five in a series and having read the first four, this is my favorite so far. I am always surprised by the new twists that take place and I love having several plot lines going at once. I also love being surprised by events that take place. Even if you didn't read the first four, you could pick this up and read it because the author gives explanations about what has already taken place without rewriting the prior book. This author is always clean and refreshing. I've got the next books in the series already lined up.

A good read

If you like the Mitford series you will really like this book. It is a heart-warmer.

the mitford years

these books were a gift for my mother. she had the rest of the series but couldnt find these, so i told her i would look on amazon because there hasnt been a book i have looked for i couldnt find on amazon. i love my kindle and use it every day. i had stopped reading for a long time and my kindle brought that pleasure to me.

Eighteen Typos and Counting...in the First Chapter.

I've read almost the entire Mitford series in hardback. Earlier this month, I decided to reread them but on my kindle this time. Although there were numerous typos in my previous purchased books by Kan Karon, the number of typos in the first chapter of this book are ridiculous. So far I've counted 18, 18 typos in the first chapter. Most of them are the result of someone substituting the number 1 in place of the letter s. For example, Elvis is spelled Elvi1. It is annoying and frankly makes me wonder if any of the pdfs were reviewed for errors before they were formatted to be sold through Amazon. I am surprised that an author would allow something with this many typos to be sold. If typos in books you've purchased irritate you, do yourself a favor and stick to the physical copy of books by this author.

Many word/spelling errors in this book.

Loved the Kindle book content. However, I have never seen so many software errors in a Kindle book and I have many Kindle books. On every page a word or two ends with a 1 as in the word "the" becomes th1 or "his" becomes hi1. I can't believe a proofreader missed this so I am assuming it is a software error. I am sorry I had to pay $9.99 for this. Just a warning to other people interested in this Kindle book.

Easy To Read

Loved the book.

Love this series of books.

The story continues. A friend got me hooked on this series of books. They are funny and heart breaking and clean. I appreciate clean. I love all of the characters and want to move to Mitford.

I continue to enjoy reading these books

I continue to enjoy reading these books. Always a good read and love the humor and adventures of Fr. Timothy. These books are uplifting and heart warming. I will definitely read the rest of the series and I will be sad when I've read my way through them all.

Five Stars

Great book in great condition.

great book but there are e-book errors

I really like this book, but the e-version for my Kindle has some numbers in place of some of the letters. Tried deleting it and re-downloading but that didn't help. If you can ignore the numbers, the book is great. Hopefully they will fix this soon.

Loved it !!!

A wonderful addition to the Mitford series - Loved it !!!

Five Stars

Good Book. Great Reading.

Five Stars

Book as described, quick in arriving

Book 5 as good as the first 4

Again, Jan Karon has written a fine story about Father Tim. You are smiling many times while reading it and sometimes just laugh out loud. She has put in down to earth situations and you feel the characters are truly real and your friends.

Five Stars

It's like Mitford on an island...I enjoyed this new installment of Father Tim's adventures

Just not quite up to the past books

I enjoyed A New Song --- but it just didn't come up to the standards of her previous stories. I couldn't follow the characters through the story -- found myself leafing back to refresh in my mind who they were. I did not connect with the characters in this book, as I did with the others. The story just seems to float along without much substance or "meat". I was just a bit disappointed.

Nostalgia

the mitford stories bring to my life a feeling of nostalgia a longing for a simpler time in life, when I was young and times were so much easier. I often think back to those days with regret that they are gone forever. Msg. Akron presents her mitford series with that. clarity of thought and the simplicity in her characters that allows the reader to enjoy youth again.

excellent addition to great stories

This was purchased for our dear friend who had listened to all the other books in this series and could not find it in stores. There was a space in the continuation of the story until she heard this one! She is in her 90's and has macular degeneration. She still lives alone even with very limited vision. She is so importnant to our family and never ask for anything for herself. She is always doing something for others. It made us so happy to get this book on CD for her and she just raves about it's story to everyone. Jan Karon is her favorite author and was always reading before she lost her vision. Thanks for providing entertainment for her and others who have limitation needs.

The Mitford Years

I am enjoying the whole Mitford Years series. I started out reading the 1st book and was hooked!

Continue with Father Tim

I am reading the Jan Karon books in the order they were written. I have enjoyed every one of them so far. This one does not disappoint the reader. Once you get to know the characters, you look forward to the continuing stories to come.

kindle version multiple misspellings on every page

The hardcopy would rate four stars, but my kindle edition was so sloppily done I can't believe the publisher released it! Not even basic spell-check. Multiple misspellings on every page is inexcusable. Did NO one PROOFREAD this transcription job? The story line is great, but don't buy the Kindle edition.

I love the Mitford series

I love the Mitford series. I couldn't put this one down. Interesting new character as well as the familar characters from the other books in the series.

Five Stars

I love the entire Mitford series and this was excellent

Five Stars

a Christmas present

Five Stars

Just more of the intimate details of Father and Cynthia Kavanaugh as they move through their charming life.

MITFORD BRINGS BACK THE PEACEFUL TIMES

I have loved each of the books in the Mitford Series. Having grown up in a rural community...small town atmosphere, etc., so much of Jan Karon's stories are fond reminders of the more simple life that graced our country at least 50 to 60 years ago.

Good Values

Wonderful series of her books about Mitford.

One of the best book series on the planet

One of the best book series on the planet. Everyone young or old should read the Mitford series. Transports you back to a time when life was simpler and people were kind to one another.

Printing Problems

I love the book. I downloaded it to my Kindle. The problem is there are so many misspelled words, it makes it difficult to read. The number 1 is where the letter e or a should be. i.e. Cynthi1, the wind is in our hai1. You see this every 2 to 3 pages I read. It's very annoying. This has nothing to do with the story, it's another fun read about Mitford, but whoever is printing these needs to do a better job in proof reading.

Wonderful reading

When you want to get lost in another place and another time the Mitford Series of Jan Karon books is the place to do it. All nine of the books in this group are stories that captivate and engross the reader.

A new song

Great story of every day people

Great story about every day people of North Carolina. I'm not sure "every one" will appreciate the Southern language used by specific characters but being born and raised in the South and educated beyond my means of understanding I truly loved this book. It easily slides into place in the "Mitford" series. Tarheels

Five Stars

Jan Karon's series on The Mitford Years is great! I've read every one of her books on Mitford and loved them all. I can't wait to read her newest book that has just come out.

Excellent, as are Books 1, 2, 3 and 4

The stories of this endearing priest and his parishioners continue to cast a wonderful spell and delight with laughter and tears. Her writing is so captivating, I am unable to stop reading (or listening). You will feel as though you know or have known Father Tim, Cynthia, Dooley, Puny and so many others for years. Grateful all the stories have been released so the enjoyment can immediately continue.

Peace and joy for the soul

An excellent light read. Joins the spirit with love and the realities of daily life. Truly a blessing for all ages.

Favorite Series

The Mitford books can be read over and over again and for that reason I keep them on my Kindle. I can choose one of the books and pick it up from almost any place in the book and have an enjoyable time reading.

Jan Karon's New Song Mitford Series book

This book by Jan Karon did not disappoint as all of the others in the Mitford series. I'm sad that I only have one more book to read after this in the Mitford series. It takes me away from all of my cares and brings me to a different world and it is so refreshing. Jan could you please write more books please? With this series I have often found myself laughing out loud over all of the characters and unique personalities. Thank you Jan for many many hours of reading enjoyment.

Good Read

Another great Mitford book by Jan Karon. Reading these books is like scarfing down chocolate. You have to purposely slow yourself down because you don't want it to end.

Father Tim cares for his "flock."

Delightful tale of a North Carolina Episcopalian priest and his ministry. Sweet, witty, refreshing.

Book

Love it!

A very pleasing story of the happenings in a small town and it's churches. Without all of the political processes of the church. Love it!

Great easy read...

... of the Mitford series by Jan Karen are the best of reads

every book of the Mitford series by Jan Karen are the best of reads, I love how the stories are told. You can't find many books that don't have violence and bad language, but here you do you find love, caring and people who love God. I can't wait to read to read her other series of Father Tim. you are the best Jan Karen.

Makes you feel good

I love books 1-5 in the Mitford series. They're simple books with stories about good people that end up giving a good feeling while reading them. Reviews of #6 were so bad though, I didn't even bother. If you're just starting, you want to be sure and read the five books in the proper sequence.

Not the author's fault, it's Amazon's fault

Love this book immensely Think I own three hardback copies. Have been taking my husband to the hospital regularly and need to have books on a small device. In my version of the Kindle purchase every few sentences with the last word ending in 1. Not, it was storming, but it was stormin1. Gets annoying on a regular basis.

Love this series

Jan Karon series

The town we all want to live in and even retire in. Mitford a town to fall in love with and a series of 9 books that all must read. Peaceful and enjoyable. Highly recommended.

Good.

Another venture in the Mitford stories. This one didn't hold the comfort of all the other Mitford books prior to it, but that's probably because it doesn't take place in Mitford. It left me feeling a little homesick actually, but it's still a worthy read.

Hurray for another book in the Mitford series!

Each book by Jan Karon is a joy to read. The Mitford series is like a spoonful of honey in my tea -- each one an exceptional pleasure.

Father Tim Series

On another's recommendation last year, I began the Father Tim series. Each has its own flavor and "crime" within it. They are not great literature, but they are quite entertaining and uplifting. Each character has a unique personality; many appear in all books in the series.

Five Stars

This author makes you think about what kind of Christian you are.

ALREADY HAVE.
