A blood-curdling scream pierces the thick black smoke. Somewhere in the darkness, a man is burning to death. Then the screams suddenly stop. Did he jump out of a window? Or did he succumb to the heat and smoke?
Those screams haunt Firefighter Robert Marchisello to this day. It’s just one of the many revealing stories about battling blazes and numerous other dangers in America’s fifth-largest city—home of the nation’s first fire company—in this autobiography of his thirty-seven-year career with the Philadelphia Fire Department.
During his entire career Marchisello kept a journal detailing his experiences as well as his personal and professional challenges. His work offers rare insights into the unimaginable types of emergencies to which these men and women respond—from decomposing bodies to hazardous chemicals to deadly shootouts. Between calls sit in the firehouse and enjoy the pranks, banter, humor, and camaraderie firefighters share.
His vibrant writing lets you experience the adrenalin, the danger and yes, even the laughs of nearly four decades on the firegrounds, in the firehouses and everywhere in between. You’ll never look at a passing fire engine the same way!

A Great Read
A great insight into the life of a firefighter around the firehouse and the many entertaining and/or tragic events that many Emergency Responders face throughout their careers. A great read for anyone in the Fire Service, Emergency Services or the general public. Thanks for sharing glimpses of your journal with everyone Chief Marchisello.

In "A Firefighter's Journal," retired Philadelphia Fire Department Deputy Chief Robert Marchisello presents a series of anecdotes, taking us on a journey of his career as a firefighter. He begins as a young boy, telling us of his first exposure to red lights and sirens, his appointment to the department, and ends with his retirement after thirty-seven years on the job. In between he presents one story after another describing the many events that occur in a distinguished career. Chief Marchisello tells us the good and the bad along with the funny and the tragic as he describes his advancement through the ranks. One thing that caught my attention was his liberal use of distinctly Philadelphia terminology with explanations as needed. Every fire department has its own jargon and his use of it helps to bring his stories to life. His descriptions of the stations and their locales add all the more flavor. This book is a real page turner, difficult to put down once you've started into it. A reader with long familiarity with or someone who has never been to Philadelphia, even someone with no connection to the fire service will be instantly captivated with "A Firefighter's Journal." As one who has read many books on the fire service, I can say that this one ranks up there at the top. SVY
IF YOU LIKE STORIES ABOUT THE BRAVEST PROFESSION..THIS IS MUST EDITION TO YOUR LIBRARY.
This book is without a doubt a MUST READ for anyone who is either a fan of the Fire Service, Active Or Retired Firefighter, or anyone who loves reading how firefighters do their job. When reading this novel it will make you feel like you are in the firehouse or sitting in the fire engine while they are responding to many alarms of service. The book itself will show the humorous side of firefighters and also the sad times when dealing with their profession. You will not be disappointed. A book that took 37 years of keeping a journal will show the details that this author bought to life again.

What an outstanding book written by an outstanding Chief officer. Thank you chief for all the time you put into writing in detail the life of a firefighter in a busy city department. After being stationed in Haz Mat 2 I can relate to all the different jobs that the Haz Mat companies respond to. I had planned to read the book over a couple of weeks, but I could not put it down. I finished it in three days. This book is a must read for any firefighter paid or volunteer. Thank You Chief.
A Must Read... ENJOY!
Agreed!! A Great Purchase and a Must Read for anyone in the Fire Service, Carrier or Volunteer. Deputy Chief Marchisello highlights and shares his thoughts, wisdom and memories with his readers. Chief Marchisello tells his story from his early childhood and adulthood, entry into the Philadelphia Fire Department as a cadet, and throughout his fire service carrier until his retirement in his thirty- seven years with the City of Philadelphia. Stories that will take you through some fun and enjoyable memories, bad memories, and even some emotional and challenging times as well. This autobiography is well written with awesome journal entries which does make it difficult to put down. Highly recommend!!! Thank You Chief for sharing!!
I totally enjoyed this page turner
Bobby will take you from a wide eyed child to a 37 year professional firefighter retired and everything in between. What a ride! If you ever had an interest into what firefighters do.....this is the book for you. No heroics, just hard work, dedication and humor. I totally enjoyed this page turner. I finished your 400+ page book in less then a week. I wish it was 800 pages. In full disclosure I am also a Philadelphia Firefighter. Bob and I knew each other and I am proud to call him friend. Bobby, congratulations on your book and career. Enjoy your retirement. I am looking forward to the next book.
WHAT A DETAILED ACCOUNT OF A FIREFIGHTER'S LIFE
As a firemen who almost mirrored Chief Marchisello's career, I can attest to the validity of the content in his book. I always said that I should have kept a journal and always told my "new kids" in the job to do the same. Well, Robert, you did it and congratulations. What a job! As others have stated, I could have replaced the author in most of the stories. I feel that everyone contemplating a career in firefighting and any younger firefighter should should put this book on a must read list. However, I do believe that today's climate of "political correctness" would never allow today's firefighters to experience the same culture and atmosphere that firefighters enjoyed back then. Also, the firefighting experience of the 70's and 80's can never be replicated with the reduced amount of fire calls today. But every new generation will enjoy the thrill and satisfaction that this career affords, along with all the good and all the bad. Thank you to all of our First Responders. Remember to always be aware of your surroundings, may God keep you safe and above all ENJOY. "Chief Capt. Bob"
The BEST Firefighter Book
I really enjoyed this book. It’s very rare to read such an articulate, well written, Firefighter Autobiography I have read any decent FF book since The Report of Engine Company 82 by Dennis Smith. This is far , far better and this truly is the nest FF book I have read. The author started out as anyone else , from the bottom. The ONLY thing he didn’t love about the Fire Service was EMS. He ended up a Deputy Chief with a Masters of Science , and his education pared with his love of the Fire Service resonates.
First Responder Must Read
If you are a first responder you must buy this book. If you know one, buy it for them. Feel the heat, taste the damp insulation, touch the wet plaster, and smell the burnt remains of someones home. The real story of the modern, big city, fire service. This book will put you right there.

A REAL BEHIND THE SCENES TOUR OF THE PHILLY FD. OUTSTANDING!!!
This book is a " can't put down" I read it in 3 sittings. Chief Marchisello's insight into the life of a firefighter from day one of the Fire College until his last night serving the citizens of Philadelphia and the firefighters under his command. This book is an outstanding description of the day to day life in the firehouse and the men and women who make this department great. Having spent my career in the same Department during much of Chief Marchisello's career I can picture some of the pranks and characters he has so genuinely portrayed, he was spot on. If you have an interest in the fire service and want a REAL behind the scenes tour this book is for you. Great job Chief, this book bought back so many memories of the JOB Thank You!
A Firefighting Epic!
Whether a professional, a volunteer or someone just interested in the life of a Firefighter, this is the book for you! The author captures everything a firefighter experiences. From the everyday banter that goes on between firefighters in the firehouse to the thoughts that go through the minds of all firefighters on the fireground the author captures every situation perfectly. By far the best book I have ever read on the life of a firefighter!
it was like being there for all of them
As a Philadelphia Firefighter at almost the exact same time as the author, this book really hit home. Seeing the names of men I also worked with, and fires that I made others I did not, it was like being there for all of them. Well done Chief, we both miss the job, I'm sure. All the guys I worked with used to say "we should write a book" well u did and it was a good one.
An excellent read providing a glimpse into the world of fire ...
An excellent read providing a glimpse into the world of fire fighting in the city of Philadelphia. In his book, Chief Marchisello documents events, both humorous and tragic, with a point of view of someone who was there as they happened.
You can't put it down
An intriguing, captivating journal about the life and career of a firefighter. Chief Marchisello describes in exquisite detail the gamut of emotions that firefighters face. From the terror of facing the Red Devil to the unfortunate souls who lose their life to it. He also details the reasons that keep him coming back, the desire to help his fellow citizens and his willingness to risk his life to do so. Before reading I had so much respect for these heroes and now it just reinforces that respect. It's like what the book says, you'll never look at a fire engine the same way after reading this book. Well done Chief ! Enjoy your retirement
Excellent book
— I am retired paramedic field chief and author of “Its Not the Trauma, It’s the Drama: Stories by a Chicago Fire Department Paramedic.” I worked for the Chicago Fire Department for 33 years, spending 25 of those years on the ambulance. I found Bob’s book to be humerous, and informative as to the workings of the day to day activities on a large metropolitan Fire Department. I was able to relate to his many stories, following his career and climb up the chain of command. Bob knows how to tell a story, be it funny or tragic. I highly recommend his book.
it was a great and at times sad walk down memory lane
After 31 years myself in the Philadelphia Fire Department, it was a great and at times sad walk down memory lane. During my career, we always said, “Someday I should write a book about this crazy stuff”!!..... and then everyone else would say Nobody would believe it! Well Bob Marchisello wrote it and did an excellent job! A great blend of humor, emotion and the day to day life of an urban firefighter! A great read!
FIRE SERVICE MUST READ
I couldn’t put this book down. Hilarious and heartbreaking. As a Philadephia firefighter myself I loved learning more about tradition (some long lost) in the department. Chief Marchisello has such a unique writing style, you feel like you’re sitting with him having a beer and talking. The stories are fascinating. The way he covers all of his emotions throughout every phase of his career is awesome. I laughed out loud so many times at this book. I wish I had the chance to learn from the very distinguished chief but this book will walk you through a fascinating career while also offering advice you feel like you’re getting from a friend.
Fascinating insight into the world of firefighting.
If your a firefighter get this book, if you are a civilian and want to know what it is like to be a firefighter get this book. I was a firefighter just outside of Philadelphia and can relate to the many of the authors excellent stories told in this book. This is the type of book that you don't want to put down once you start to read it and hate when you get to the last chapter wishing there was a sequel!
I highly recommend this book it is an easy read and a ...
This by far is one of the most descriptive and true tales about the tough, demanding job of firefighting and rising through the ranks! It feels as though you're sitting at the dinner table with the rest of the guys, or aboard the rig racing towards the thick black smoke in the sky. I highly recommend this book it is an easy read and a very hard book to put down.
Chief Marchisello tells us the good and the bad along with the funny and the ...
What an outstanding book written by an outstanding Chief officer ...
This book will put you right there.
however anyone would enjoy Chief Marchisello's writings no matter where they are from
An absolute page-turner and a must have for the library of any City of Philadelphia Firefighter or PFD Buff; however anyone would enjoy Chief Marchisello's writings no matter where they are from. I was pleased to see Aberdeen Proving Ground so prominently mentioned! Well done Chief, an outstanding job!!! -Randy Yardumian, Civilian Firefighter Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire Dept 1997-2005
Great read!
Bob's writing style was smooth, easy to follow. As one of his former firefighters, it put me right back on the "back step" with him, crawling down the hallways. And right back in the firehouse kitchen, the center of the firehouse, laughing, eating, drinking coffee, and breaking chops.
A great read about a great career, Firefighting.
Chief Marchisello’s book really nailed the life of Firefighters and Paramedics not only in Philadelphia but most firehouses in the country . I highly recommend anyone who wants to be part of this service to read this book. Chief Marchisello and I went through the Fire Academy together in 1973. We never worked in the same Firehouse togeter but over the years we worked with a lot of the same Firefighters and Paramedics. His dedication , honor, integrity, intelligence was known throughout the Department. The stories of tragedies ,life , death, rescues , pranks, humor brought back many memories. I was proud to serve in the same Fire Department.
The perfect balance
Report from Engine Co. 82 was the first book I read about firefighting that wan't a picture book. For years it served as motivation for my avocational passion, and later volunteer service, firefighting. The pictures created by the words describing this remarkable career from Chief Marchisello's viewpoint make it the defining tome of life in the fire service. Your training and dedication served the citizens of Philadelphia well, and the people involved in this book's creation served the readers equally.
A must read for any first responder!
I found this book to be the Philly version of Report from Engine Co 82. Following Bob’s journey through his 37 year career was such a page turner, I finished his book in 2 days. As a firefighter and Philly boy from E65’s local, it was as if I was at every fire scene Bob encountered. Outstanding read!’
Chief Marchisello's book was easy reading, and shared insight on what it is ...
Chief Marchisello's book was easy reading, and shared insight on what it is like to be a part of one of the greatest jobs on earth. His writing style was reminiscent of Dennis Cook's "Report from Engine Co. 82" and Boston Fire Chief/Commissioner Leo Stapleton's autobiographical and fiction books. Anyone who wants to experience the inside of a fire service career should put this book on their list of must-reads. I saw that Matt LeTourneau had read and reviewed this book- take an extra measure of what he said about it, as he was a true fire service hero who lost his life serving his community and his men.
This book was one of the best I have read in a very long time
This book was one of the best I have read in a very long time. Chief Marchisello really hit a homerun with this book. It is a great read not only for Professional and Volunteer Firefighters and their families, but for everyone to learn what life is like as a Firefighter.
Inspiring book.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I loved reading about the historic events you witnessed and was saddened by the tragedies. Many of the names you speak of, I've had the pleasure of meeting. I could also picture many of the addresses and neighborhoods in your stories. I am proud to wear the same uniform as you.
Fast narrative, always interesting.
Great summary of a career dedicated to service. At times, poignant, funny and gritty. Puts you in the midst of a four alarm as well as the humor and camaraderie of a firehouse kitchen! Great read!
The day to day life of a firefighter by a real firefighter.
This book is outstanding, a true look into the world of being a Philadelphia Fire Fighter. Chief Marchisello has done an excellent job in allowing anyone to know what the day to day life of a firefighter is all about. I would give this book 10 stars if I could. Great job chief!

The definition of a real hero is defined in this book. You don't have to be in the fire service to enjoy the everyday life and dedicated career of a firefighter in a major city. You can feel all the different emotions that Chief Marchisello eloquently describes. It's a great read from the first sentence to the very last! Do yourself a favor and read this book!

Highly recommended! Great read ! Very insightful
Absolutely wonderful book ! The writing is colorful and makes me feel like i was right there with him in the stations, on the runs ( “shoes”!), and throughout his career. It was entertaining and insightful. And this can also services as inspiration for new members into the service to keep their own journals throughout their careers !!
A very important book, a great read
I so enjoyed reading this book. The author gave a insightful account of his career as a firefighter in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. One can only hope that our children will grow up to be the man the author became as he spent 37 years of his life helping other people. The world is in great need of men and women like Robert Marchisello.
A journal from cadet to chief, on the the front lines of the Philadelphia Fire Department.
This book is a great insight into firefighting and what it's like from fire school through to retirement. Few keep a detailed record of their career, but after reading this journal, you'll be glad he did. I found this book hard to put down and I know you will too.
Great book

A current Philadelphia Fireman
A Firefighter's Journal is an astounding book for any firefighter, especially those in Philadelphia. Learning the history of the department while also getting that feeling of sitting at the firehouse kitchen table is wonderful. The only issue I had with the book and its small is chapter 13 where the MOVE bombing was covered
What really goes on in the life of a firefighter.
I'm a little biast since I worked with BoB, book shows what its like really on the job. Thought it was well written. Good job!!
Getting out the word so that we can understand what our modern day hero's do for all of us.
Great book about our modern American hero's and all they do for us. The day to day takes you through the entire gamut of human emotion. From interesting funny stories to tragic life altering instances for so many. Thank you for all you have done.
Informative and Honest
This was an easy read. It was also a great read. The stories from a career have a lot to teach firefighters and civilians alike.

SVY

Real life, true story, heros galore!
Fantastic read! I found myself wanting to know what happened next. Throughout the book I laughed and cried and I gained a new respect for the Philadelphia fire department. I had no idea what a big city needs to overcome and trouble shoot in order to do their job and do it well.

Great book about the past years in the PFD
will have a good page turning read
Anybody who purchases this book, and I hope you do, will have a good page turning read. I give it 5 stars and a really good pat on the back for a job well done. Chief really contributed to the betterment of the department. I have followed the Philadelphia Fire Department since the late 1960's. The book covered all phases of a firefighters life from his childhood to retirement. Stories of fires he worked at, that I remember reading about. It delved into the thoughts of his years on the job, retirement and how much he would miss the firehouse. Being a former firefighter I agreed with his thoughts and personally have had a time getting it out of my system but still turn when I hear a siren. Would love to see a second book.
Funny, insightful, informative, and sometimes heartbreaking
I really liked this book. I feel like it gave me a much better idea of what firefighters experience and endure. I have always respected the brave men and women who run into danger while most folks are fleeing, but I've really gained a whole new appreciation for them now.
A well-written journal of the life of a firefighter
It was probably the fact that a firefighter carried me out of my smoke-filled home when I was a small child that led me to chose to read this book. I'm not sorry. The author is a very good writer; his subject is interesting. It's well worth the read.
Great
I read report from engine company 82as a child and it was the greatest thing until this book. Just captivating story and enough humor to blunt the tough stuff as a retired Police officer and father of a veteran firefighter was awesome to read lives good and long retirement Deputy Bob.
Wow
What an amazing book! The author’s description of his career makes me proud to say my late Grandpa was a brother firefighter! This man had a talent for fighting fires and writing—I’m glad I stumbled across this book! It will be one I would love to reread in the future.
A great read!
I was a New York City Firefighter but I am well aware that it doesn't matter where you worked-firefighters share the same experiences everywhere. Bob certainly shows that in his superb book. His description of the many experiences of his long and extensive career were interesting, moving, and fun to read. This is a book that deserves a place in every firefighter's library. Tom Dunne, author of "Notes From the Fireground"
Amazing inside look into the life of a hero.
Absolutely loved this book. Being from South Philly, it was really interesting to read stories about places familiar to me. Even if that wasn't the case, it would still have grabbed all my attention. It was so enlightening in regard to the thoughts and life a firefighter. I smiled, I cried and I gained even more respect for firefighters. True true heroes. Wonderful book.
Firefighters
This book is awesome. I didn’t want to put it down! It pictured in detail the job of firefighters and the development of the EMS program.
Eye opening
This was a tough read for me but it was just because my father was mentioned in the book. That being said this book gives great insight to the goings on in the Firefighters world of life. I will highly recommend this book a must read for all. PFD Daughter

A Fireman's Fireman!
Only a firefighter could produce such a wonderful story of a career putting wet stuff in the red stuff. Worth the dead and should be required reading in every fire academy. Great job Chief!
Well written and fast read
The chief gives his readers an enjoyable and factual look into the Philadelphia FD. In particular, he brings day to day life in the firehouse to the forefront, both good and bad. For someone in the fire service, it's an interesting read about a another department, for someone without that background, it's a great look behind the "big red doors".
The heros that were rarely get to know.
Such a great read. This is a very well written story of a man's journey in life that eventually places him in a role that he could only imagine as a child. The story is personal and raises your emotions as the author shares intimate details of his life as a firefighter in a large city fire department.. Be ready to experience what it is like to be an American hero.
Interesting and worthwhile read
This book tells what it is like to fight fires in a big city environment and Hazardous Materials responses. The Chief explains things well.
Amazing book
This book is now one of my all time favorites. There is so much that he says, that make you feel like you were not only there, but that you were thinking what he was thinking. Absolutely recommend!

Chief Marchisello’s account of his career is so encapsulating of the experience and the camaraderie of the job. This book has inspired me and reaffirmed my desire to follow this career into the worlds greatest job. I have reread this book five times and been inspired and captivated every time.

This book will put you right there.
however anyone would enjoy Chief Marchisello's writings no matter where they are from
An absolute page-turner and a must have for the library of any City of Philadelphia Firefighter or PFD Buff; however anyone would enjoy Chief Marchisello's writings no matter where they are from. I was pleased to see Aberdeen Proving Ground so prominently mentioned! Well done Chief, an outstanding job!!! -Randy Yardumian, Civilian Firefighter Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire Dept 1997-2005

I loved it. An excellent life's story by a knowledgeable firefighter and a real gentleman. A good friend and work partner for many years.
Excellent read.
Extremely well written. A good read for any firefighter. Great story telling. I wish I had the forethought to do the same. From my humble beginnings to 27.5 year veteran Captain.
Life story
I liked the way this book took a firefighter from his time as a small boy to his retirement. I can’t imagine journaling a life story the way he did, but turned out well.
Great read for every firefighter young and old
I recently retired from my FD after 33.5 years of service. I really enjoyed reading this book and reliving some of my own memories.
Great stories from the job.
I really like the author's account of being a fireman. This is a must read for anyone on the job.
