A Fine Romance, Falling in Love with the English Countryside is travel writing at its best by Susan Branch, New York Times best selling author. This charming book is part love story, part travel guide ~ a hand-written and watercolored diary/journal of Branch's six-day transatlantic crossing on board the Queen Mary 2 and a two-month ramble through the backroads of rural England.     There are over three hundred photos, countless watercolor illustrations, wonderful quotes, recipes, a book list, a movie list, hand-drawn maps and so much more.  Travel with Susan as she makes her way through wildflower hedgerows to visit the homes and gardens of her literary and artistic heroes including Beatrix Potter and Jane Austen. It's a travel guide that will help you plan a trip of your own, lovely for the armchair traveler because Susan really does take you there, and perfect for all Downton Abbey anglophiles.  When you are finished, go to Susan's website where there is an interactive Appendix to the book .... you can experience driving across the Dales with Susan's own videos and find links to everything she writes about, the cottages and gardens you will want to see yourself. A Fine Romance is book three of a Susan Branch trilogy. Book One is The Fairy Tale Girl, followed by Martha's Vineyard, Isle of Dreams, and then A Fine Romance, Falling in Love with the English Countryside. All three are hand-lettered, watercolored, filled with photos, recipes and quotes and, as Susan says, as much magic as she could possibly stuff between two covers. Bon Voyage!

I love her writing so much that I've started to read ...

Kudos to Susan Branch writing another fabulous book that takes you on the journey with her. I waited forever for this book to arrive and it was so worth it. I do have to say something about the other reader to made mention of her lack of sex in this book. If you buy Susan Branch books and truly get out of it what was meant, you are not purchasing her books for that reason. What's so special about Susan's writing is that she can hold your attention and imagination without detailed bedroom scenes. Her writing is so refreshing and enables you to escape your everyday life through her eyes. I love her writing so much that I've started to read the many books and authors writings that she mentions in this trilogy. I'm sad to be almost finished with this book, but blessed to have stumbled upon her writing.

The Absolute Best!!

I am loving this book. In fact, I'm loving it so much that I'm treating it like a luscious chocolate cake. It would be so easy to read the whole book in one sitting. But since I want the pleasure of reading it to last as long as possible, I'm forcing myself to finding a quiet spot in my garden and reading only a small "slice" each evening -- just like eating a small slice of a delicious chocolate cake. I love every single part of this book -- the quotes, the photos, Susan's talented water colors - but most of all the way she has crafted her words! As she travels, I feel as if she were writing letters home only to me. Her style is casual, comical, informative, and oh so engaging. It's probably no coincidence that this book seems to speak directly to me since my best friend's name is also Susan and I'm a closet anglophile. However, I can only hope that Susan Branch decides to travel to Italy and France and Spain and any other interesting place that strikes her fancy and shares those trips with us, too. This book is a treasure I will keep forever!

Travel to England Without Leaving Home

Susan Branch is one of my favorites. I love her stationary, calendars, note cards, scrapbook stickers and the list goes on. Her writing makes you feel as you are sitting with a friend having a conversation. Her artwork is whimsical, fun and will cause you to pause on each page to appreciate her creativity and talent. A Fine Romance is a beautifully written story of her trip to the English countryside. She and Joe explore the tiny English villages where they stay in apartments, walk the cobblestone streets, visit castles, writer's homes, hike footpaths through the countryside and dine in pubs. You will fall in love with her stories and as you close the book as you finish, you will want to pack your bags and head to England.

A Marvelous Adventure

OK, color me a Susan Branch fangirl. I’ve been collecting her books since the first one, and got my sister hooked on them shortly afterwards. One of my annual gifts to sis is at least one SB calendar. And then I discovered her blog shortly after its inception. Oh, joy. So, when she announced her trip to England and regularly posted about her exploits in advance of the book, I just couldn’t wait for the result. Naturally, I ordered one for my sister, as well. After that intro, it’s obvious that I’m a bit biased, but I can honestly say the book exceeded my expectations. If you’re already a fan of Susan, you won’t want to miss out on it. If you’re new to Susan, this is a good introduction. If you’re an Anglophile, are thinking of traveling to England, or like beautiful, whimsical art books, then this is also worth a look-see. So, what do you get? Well, this is pretty much a step-by-step recounting of the weeks’ long trip Susan and her husband Joe took, from doorstep to doorstep. Reading about the voyage on the Queen Mary 2 alone is worth the price of admission. A transatlantic crossing by ship is now on my wish list. While in England, Susan and Joe visited friends, went for long walks and drives, stopped by country houses and gardens, shopped, ate at pubs and tea shops, and just breathed in the ambiance of England. If you yearn for the glamour of London or better known tourist spots, then this probably isn’t the book for you. But if you prefer a more “quaint” and leisurely sort of trip while taking in the quiet beauty of small towns and countryside, then this is most definitely the book you want. And, of course, it’s perfect for armchair tourists. You never even have to actually leave home, but can vicariously experience Susan and Joe’s journey while in your jammies. Susan has a wonderful writing style. She takes great joy in the small things in life and she infects her readers with her generous spirit and humor. And, as with all of Susan’s books, they are a visual delight. All of the text is handwritten in Susan’s distinctive calligraphy. The book is also jam-packed with illustrations, predominantly Susan’s watercolors, but also photographs. The book isn’t just pretty, tho; it also has a serious side. It’s very practical and informative and, if you want to know more about any of the sites visited, there’s a terrific appendix as well as additional information on her blog. This is a book you could easily devour in one sitting, but then come back to in order to savor individual passages or chapters. Buy one as a treat for yourself. And then buy one (or lots) as a treat for a friend. Enjoy!

LOVED this Book

I LOVED this book. I have a dream f going to England one day and this is the kind of trip that I would take. I am sure that London and all the other larger cities are beautiful, but the countryside is what I long for. This book was written in a way that made me feel like it was just for me. Thank you Susan Branch for making my heart sing!! Onto Martha's Vineyard- Isle of Dreams next. (I didn't know there was a certain order to read them, I guess I will just have to read them again!!)

I'll pack your 14 bags for your next trip...call me!

We are fortunate that Susan wanted to share her love of this very special part of England. She oozes child-like fun and joy while visiting places of authors/water colorists that have been a part of Susan's fiber forever. I have traveled the places and paths that she writes about in this memoir and the book made me want to get on a plane and re-walk the green and peaceful places. A Fine Romance is written in her journaling, handwritten style and the pages are filled with her favorite quotes, sweet borders and scattered watercolor drawings. It is a love story of past heroines, the charm of land and companion of her life. I truly felt her giddiness as the three-month journey saturates her through and through. Thanks, Susan, for taking us on along on this happy and peaceful trip.

Very Disappointed Not much to offer

I loved the book before this one, partially because of Marthas Vineyard which is a soul home to me. In that book, her story had depth and interest and great quotes. In this book it was boring and dry and no romance of any kind. Lots of photos of gardens and bland diary about mundane things. Some interesting facts but truly not worth the price or read. I sent back her first book which I also bought at the same time.

Anglophiles Will Love This Book!

I have been a Susan Branch fan for many years! Her cookbooks started coming out in the mid-80's and were a hit! This book takes you on the trip she made to the English countryside via sailing on a cruise ship several years back. It's handwritten in her usual style with watercolor pictures, photos, and descriptions of the ocean excursion and all the land tours she and her husband took for almost a month in England. It's fun and fast reading but super informative, lovely to look at and full of her thoughts and asides about the trip. By far, this is my favorite tour guide of the English countryside! I highly recommend it!

Begin as a reader, leave as a friend....you won't be disappointed

Bought the book for myself---and was not disappointed. Enjoyed the chatty nature (as if I were the only one with her, and we were both good friends on the journey together) and descriptions of places from the Queen Mary 2 to the places visited in each chapter. There was no agenda here other than to inform and entertain, with reflection thrown in at the end for good measure. The watercolors are lovely, each a tiny jewel throughout the book. The photos are heartwarming at times, outlining a trip that was well thought out and truly memorable. I will never get to England and certainly never get to sail on an ocean liner. However, I did fall in love with the book, did learn much about England, and finished the book with a smile on my face and a cozy feeling in my heart. Not too many books can evoke such emotions anymore.

Lovely in Every Way!

I have always loved everything that Susan Branch has written and created but when I received this book for my birthday this year, I couldn't put it down. Every page was such a delight! I felt like I had gone on this England adventure with Susan! So, when I needed birthday gifts for two of my closest friends, this book was my first choice! This is such a treasure you'll want to read and re-read. Grab a cup of tea and a cosy blanket and prepare for a lovely journey across the pond to lovely England...
