33 Days to Merciful Love: A Do-It-Yourself Retreat in Preparation for Consecration to Divine Mercy

Having read Fr. Gaitley's "Consoling The Heart Of Jesus" and his "33 Days To Morning Glory", a Marian Consecration book based on the thought of St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. John Paul II, and Blessed (soon to be St.) Teresa of Calcutta, I was excited to see that he had taken up the subject of a Consecration to Divine Mercy based largely on St. Therese's "Offering To Merciful Love" with a little bit of St. Faustina added. Today is Divine Mercy Sunday. I made Fr. Gaitley's "Prayer of Consecration to Merciful Love" on pages 134 and 135 and renewed my "Offering to Merciful Love" in the words of the Little Flower, on pages 135 and 136, which I first made on June 9, 1995, the 100th anniversary of Therese first making the Consecration. This book can best be summarized by some words on pages 55-57: "[T]he Little Way is all about the heart of the Gospel: Divine Mercy. It's all about remaining little and then arriving at the heights of holiness through the descending mercy of Jesus. ... It's about accepting that we are to put up with ourselves - with all the darkness of our weakness, brokenness, and sin, - without getting discouraged. It's recognizing, without giving up, that some struggles are chronic. It's realizing, without despairing, that they may be with us till our dying day. But it's also about realizing that this does not prevent us from becoming saints." I particularly liked and lingered on days 2 thru 7, which are about the importance of faith (trust) and the great faith and trust of our Mother in Faith, Mary, and our Father in Faith, Abraham. They believed God's promises would be fulfilled despite how humanly impossible those promises seemed. However little Faith one has had, however greatly one has sinned, one should never despair of God's Merciful Love as St. Therese tells us: "[E]ven though I had on my conscience all the sins that can be committed, I would go, my heart broken with sorrow, and throw myself into Jesus' arms, for I know how much He loves the prodigal child who returns to Him." (PP. 54,55) And St. Faustina: "Let our judgment of souls cease, for God's mercy upon them is extraordinary. ... Oh, how beyond comprehension is God's mercy! ... God's mercy sometimes touches the sinner at the last moment in a wondrous and mysterious way." (PP. 192, 193)

I am usually not a person who likes novenas or consecrations...but this was recommended by a close friend in faith and I felt inspired to take it up and I am deeply grateful I did. Although I have read other books about St. Therese I was not able to understand her too well let alone how to practice her "Little Way" in a genuine manner. I am amazed by the journey Fr. Gaitley took me through the Gospels, the heart of man and the Sacred Heart. It helped me become open to my sins and weaknesses, joyful in receiving God's merciful love and able to love others more easily and empathetically. I have and will continue to recommend these to many for years...

The daily readings are very short and very readable. Completely doable every day. This was such a game changer for me, and has completely changed my life. I guess I didn't really understand divine mercy before reading this book. I love this book and will read it many times. This should be read by everyone but especially every catholic. Can't recommend enough I have read many of his books and he truly is doing Gods work writing these. I strongly suggest reading Consoling the Heart of Jesus also as it gives you deeper info on the topic.

You can't ever deserve sainthood or earn your way into heaven. But, in this easy to read self directed 33 day retreat you will discover, in just a small amount of time each day, how God will do just that for you, and work through you to do the same for others. As a Catholic permanent deacon, insurance agent, prison chaplain, and grandfather I find time for prayer is hard to come by. This worked even with my hectic schedule. It is suggested, but not required that you time this 33 day journey so that the 33rd day coincides with a feast day in honor of our Lord or the Blessed Mother.

Am just on day 7 and i felt the Holy Spirit day by day and know more how great our God. And it will help you grow spirtually.

Father Michael E. Gaitley has a writing style that is very accessible. I enjoyed his sense of humor while reflecting on the very important message of Merciful Love. This book helped me to get through a difficult time in my life and helped me to refocus on what is most important. It was easy to read and easy to follow through with the daily meditations.

A self-directed retreat in the human "voice" of a retreat-master who's been on the path himself. Not preachy, but conversational. Give and you will receive. Simple, but true meditations for each day. Food for a lifetime, and then some.

Simple, straightforward and beautiful. This book takes you behind the spirituality of St. Therese and helps you understand how all of us is worth of God's love and compassion. If you're afraid of suffering and don't think you are strong enough, then get this book! It will change you're perspective and help you realize how much love our Lord has for you! It's a very easy and engaging read, and it could just change your life.

Fr. Gaitley's writings are lite, efreshing and easy to read. This book has you reading and praying to live a life of mercy and kindness. I gave a copy to my priest and we are now doing a parish retreat following the message in this book. An excellent read.

The words brought the Mercy of the Lord to life

Author has exceptional ability to draw one into furthering ones journey to God. My experience from reading the book has drawn me into a deeper journey in reading about St Therese.

Daily meditations were brief and easily understood. This is a very powerful, thought provoking, well written book! Worth every penny.

I wanted a spiritual book to read with my daughter. Together we will pick a consecration day, and read this together. Looking forward to some special time with my daughter, spent on things eternal.

Short passages but impactful

I have read "33 Days to Morning Glory" several times and have even done the consecration process with groups at my parish. I attended Fr. Gaitley's retreat on "Mary and Mercy" and at the time, he asked us to pray that he may complete this particular book. Boy, were my prayers answered! I am only on Day 11 and am finding so much comfort and inspiration in these words!! I am so grateful that Fr. Gaitley writes books such as this for us 'little souls' who try to be holy, but are often discouraged by our falls and faults. This read is making this Lenten season particularly meaningful. I highly recommend this book, especially if you love the Little Flower.

In this follow-up, "33 Days to Merciful Love: A Do-It-Yourself Retreat in Preparation for Consecration to Divine Mercy," Fr. Michael Gaitley of the Marian Fathers invites us to make a consecration to Divine Mercy using St. Therese’s Offering to Merciful Love as our role model. According to Fr. Gaitley, “You don’t have to read '33 Days to Morning Glory' before reading this book – but I strongly recommend that you do. I say that because the essence of Marian consecration is to allow Mary to bring us to the pierced side of Jesus, which is the Fountain of Mercy . . . “This book, on the other hand, is about drinking from the Fountain of Mercy. I just finished the book and the 33 day retreat. This is one VERY special book, one that needs to be read several times - it's just THAT GOOD! Especially for families. I thoroughly enjoyed this self-retreat. In fact, I purchased a book for my mother as well and she and I did the reflections each day with each other. The reflections are short enough that it's not intimidating, but deep enough to be thought provoking. It helped me grow in my own spirituality and understanding of God's mercy. This book is in my top 10 favorite books! It's changed my life, and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. This copy was purchased for my best friend whom I recently finished this retreat. I've completed it once a year for the past 4 years now.

I thoroughly enjoyed this retreat and consecration. I have a deep devotion to St Therese and have read all books I could get my hands on that are about her or by her. Despite all my previous reading on her life and spirituality I have to admit that it is this text, 33 Days to Merciful Love, that is the first to really explain the heart of the Little Way. I feel like I finally get it! I have felt so much spiritual consolation during this consecration. I highly recommend this to everyone. God bless!

Father Gaitley does an amazing job of communicating the teachings of St. Therese and Divine Mercy. Other reviewers give an account of the details. I simply want to add how much I learned from reading this. I also know I will need to review over and over to deeply practice what is taught. "Keep Trying and Trusting" as Father Gaitley says. I strongly recommend this book. I am very grateful to Father Gaitley for writing this for us.

This book shows how we all can become saints. Yes, we can!! I have read a lot about why we should be saints, but no other book really laid out the ways to do it. This one does! ...and it's really doable!! God will help us because He wants this for us. All we have to do is ask for His help. I love this book for putting my feet on the path!!

Encourage me to receive God's merciful love more fully and challenged me to approach situations and people with merciful love as well. It was simple yet transforming. It is amazing how much growth can occur by reading 3 to 5 minutes a day and then pondering. Wow!!

There are not enough superlatives to assign to this book. The retreat is not for the faint of heart nor the undisciplined. Only those serious about sainthood and total consecration to Christ through Holy Mother need read.

I purchased this book as a part 2 of 33 days of Morning Glory. This Do-it-Yourself Retreat is very easy to read very helpful in the meditation process. It is also very helpful in my Spiritual Direction Journal. I highly recommend that this book be added to your spiritual book collection.

An excellent guided retreat for the year of Mercy. I particularly like the emphasis on the Holy Spirit to lead you to where you ought to be. In some cases I felt I was venturing into territory that I did not feel ready to go. However later after contemplation I was comfortable with it. "a great saint"? I don't know about that, but the retreat provided a great adventure. I revisit the readings often. Thanks to the author for surrendering to be used in this way.

Not only is this book on Merciful Love an extremely powerful book, but Father Gaitley is an incredible author. The way he forms his thoughts and puts them into words makes it all so easy to understand and follow. I highly recommend this spiritually powerful book.

Love my book it was great

Since I was a young teen I was told that my spiritual gift was mercy (I have my mentor and friend Omer Young among others to thank for this understanding). Four decades later I'm finally coming home to an understanding of that gift. Much gratitude and thanks to Fr. Michael Gaitley and my Parish Priest Fr. Jim Chelich for shining light on this path, this way of being and understanding the Gospel that fits my soul. Today, April 23, 2017, Divine Mercy Sunday, was my first consecration to looking at life through this lens and I am joyfully dedicated to learning to grow in this little way. For anyone who wants to learn how to trust God more and follow His way of Divine Mercy I highly recommend this book as a starting point. Even non-Catholics can benefit from being taken through this little 'school of trust', as this spirituality is accessible to any Christian with an open heart and mind and explains much about the human condition and our basic problem of distrust in God's goodness. I want to be a missionary for Divine Mercy! May it start in a tiny way right here. May God bless you with His Mercy and Peace!

Good “shot in the arm” for St Therese lovers. She has never failed me! Wonderful description of her little way. Seems almost too simple,but then opens your mind and heart to new ideas and awareness.

What a wonderful way to teach St. Terese's "Little Way" to a brand new generation. This book and CONSECRATION (at the end of the book.) is so rich in graces. I will do this consecration over and over again. I pray the Consecration prayer every day!

I am so glad my parish priest introduced me to Fr. Gaitley's books. They are written in at a level I can easily understand and absorb. Through them I have gained greater understandings and insights into God's will.

33 days of Beautiful meditations to make or renew your Total Consecration to Jesus Christ through BVM ala St Louis DeMontfort. This author explores a parallel to Saint Therese's spirituality of doing small things with great love. Readings are short and not overwhelming. Each day leaves you with something to ponder.

A wonderful way to begin a journey of faith to divine mercy

The message of St. Therese is at the Heart of Jesus. It must be heard! Read this book and you'll find out how much God has had mercy on you.

With each day I felt myself drawing closer to the Merciful Love of Jesus thorough the Little Way of St. Teresa.

I understand the concept of breaking it down into 33 small lessons, but I got much more out of Story of a Soul. This wasn’t “meaty” like Story of a Soul which really allowed reflection into the Little Way of St. Thérèse. This was a “just the basics” book for me.

This is a beautiful at home retreat and gives you many truths to ponder. It helps you to trust in God and know of His mercy.

A beautiful way to pray and help us grow in compassion and allow our hearts to be more deeply moved by the suffering of others and to console the heart of Jesus. I will definitely pray through this more than once!

Great author

I'm ordering more. I feel like this book has some very powerful information in it and its a book that needs to be shared. I've given away two copies to friends and I'm ordering more. That being said I do get where some reviewers are coming from; the tone is a bit much for me. It's very passionate and personally written (which is good) but the expense of delivering information clearly and concisely. I honesty struggled to wrap my head around what he was getting at sometimes. But the value of the teaching far outweighs any flaws of the penmanship.
