I absolutely love the scaffolding this book provides
Our 5-year-old daughter (kindergartener) had problems sounding words out, so I purchased this book for its short reading passages and follow-up comprehension questions. The readings are theme-based. Each week there is a different theme. Around that theme, there are 3-4 short paragraphs plus a writing prompt. Each short paragraph then becomes the daily reading. The short paragraphs are usually composed of 3-4 sentences and followed by 4 questions related to the topic. We usually do this daily practice within 30 minutes -- not too long nor too short -- and it improves my daughter's literacy significantly. I absolutely love the scaffolding this book provides! Another point to love this book is that although pictures are sometimes provided in this book, they are not too many like the other A-level reading books, which impedes the readers from trying to sound the words out by the alphabets, not the pictures. My daughter tends to look at the pictures and guesses the words without trying to pronounce them by phonics. The text-focused style pushes her to pay more attention to the words themselves and thereby boost her literacy. Now she enjoys sounding out any words in sight! Yay!!
Very helpful for struggling reader!
My 8 year old (who is homeschooled) has always had difficulties reading. She is an incredible math wiz, but she has never had any interest in reading and has always gotten easily frustrated while trying to. With her having lots of tears and loss of confidence I was desperate to find something that would really help her to learn not only how to read sentences, but the meaning behind them and the ability to help her remember and retain the information she was learning. Now two and a half weeks in, she read for the first time ever a complete story without stopping! Getting distracted and stopping after a few words was something she has struggled with in the past, but not today! The smile on her face when she had realised what she had done made this book priceless. Her confidence is getting stronger and her interest in reading is slowly but surely growing. This book has been such a help to her and me. Seeing your child struggle to learn how to read is such a heartbreak and while I'm sure there is still more frustration and possibly even more tears to come, I'm feeling hopeful that she will take today and start to see reading as a positive opportunity and not some big scary thing she "has to do".
Engaging and fun!
I love this for my 5 year old daughter! I decided to homeschool her for Kindergarten and purchased this to kickstart our year. It’s the perfect size excerpt to capture her attention and test her comprehension! She is excited to do them, and often asks to do more than 1-2 a day! I also love that there is a written response portion on Day 5, that corresponds with a previously read text! Awesome product! Would buy again!
Good!
My son is currently in 2nd grade soon to be 3rd but he's a struggling reader and is reading at Kindergarten level. We've just started this workbook but it's great because I can sit down with him and watch him read...see what words he struggles with as well as take notes to see if he comprehends the reading. I've noticed that it's the diphthongs, vowel pairs, and digraphs he's having trouble with. This book is a little pricey but I'd say it's working out nicely for us.
Good, but could be refined...
Good, but often times I find the questions can be vague or sometimes two of the answers are actually quite suitable instead of just one which can confuse a kid. I've even seen a question for which none of the answers applied. Editing for this book was somewhat poor in other words. For the most part though, it's still quite a good learning book. Nice that it builds in some open answers for creative thinking and writing skills!
Recommend it to all 1st graders or those who help
I am a tutor and help 1st graders who just came to America. They had a big problem in understanding the instructions when they were given tests in class. This book helped resolve the issue. I am very thankful. Recommend it to all 1st graders or those who help them
Not ability/age appropriate. But has good lessons.
Good lessons. However, my first grader is still a budding reader. The material is well beyond her ability. Maybe a good bridge book between 1st and 2nd?
Text Complexity
The resources is well thought out. I love the CD which includes PDF files off the activities. However, the text complexity is too high for first grade students. I would use this resource with 2nd graders.
Absolutely what I was looking for!
I purchase a lot of books for my kids online and they use several online programs. This is one of my favorite books. It is very thorough. It actually stretches them. This book forces them to actually comprehend what they are reading and use reasoning skills. This book cost more than many other workbooks I purchase for my prek-4 and 1st grade students, but it is worth the money. My prek-4 student uses the 1st grade book and my 1st grader uses the 2nd grade book. I will purchase more of these as my budget permits :-).
Reading Comprehension
This workbook represents the curriculum of 1st grade. The emphasis of this book is basic reading comprehension. I used it to supplement my child's education, and to ensure that she was at least on track. The format of the book is as follows: on day one to three, the child has to read a short story, a paragraph of 4 to 6 sentences. After which, the child is required to answer 4 questions based on the text. As the weeks progress, the questions become progressively harder, testing the child's true understanding of the text vs. basic information. On day 4, the text is longer and a little more complex, with about 10 to 12 sentences. Again after which, the child is required to respond to questions. The 5th and final day, is a writing exercise based on the reading from day four. I found it worked best when my daughter completed a week's worth of work in one day, since each day's lesson was part of an overall theme, and built on the prior day's lesson. It took about 30-60 mins to complete the entire week. The writing part of the week, probably took up 30 mins. At times, she completed days 1 to 4, in one sitting, and day 5 on a different day. However, each child is different and the good thing about this workbook is that it can be worked at your pace.

Yes! Worth the money, the added CD on the back with all the workpages in PDF file is an absolutely great bonus! I'm so glad I don't have to copy and print every page by hand, which I was planning to do since I've got 2 kids. My son and daughter will definitely be able to use this!
Better than board books in reading improvements
I love the short stores and the multiple choice questions. Color pages would have been nice to make it more interesting. This book has helped my daughter read better and think about the main points in the short stories.
He has enjoyed it so far
My 10 year old struggles with reading and becomes very frustrated with most books I have tried. This lessons in this book are short and simple. He has enjoyed it so far.
Works for adult literacy students also!
This was perfect for an adult student that I am teaching how to read in an adult literacy program. It is helping him to go beyond reading the words and it teaches him to remember what he's read as well as understanding the context. Highly recommend it .
Good reading and comprehension book
Bought it to help my 6 year old read and so far he loves it. Anyone with a 6 year old knows how hard it is to get them to focus. The passages are short and the questions get them thinking. The first day he was hooked and now reading is a thing of the past. Words don't scare him anymore.
Excellent Book for grades K - 1 to help develop reading comprehension
I was at a lost for ideas until I found this book. My kindergartener enjoys reading and loves to read me night time stories. This book at the “K” level and Spectrum Phonics helped make this great accomplishment easy. If you have a young reader please try this books along with Spectrum Phonics.
Great to make a home/school connection.
Reading is not my sons favorite activity, even though his skills are actually pretty good. I bought this book to help give him some confidence when reading passages and to work on his comprehension, which is really the hardest part of learning to read and is key for later success (“great, you read that story, what was it about?”). This book is perfect for my needs. The passages are short, the questions aren’t hard but they do require that you’ve actually read and paid attention, and the writing pages require some thought. All around a great book to reinforce what he’s learning at school.
Great for Reading Comprehension
This is exactly what we needed to practice, assess, and strengthen comprehension skills. My daughter loves this workbook.
Great practice
I used this for my son goingninto the first grade to get him ready for reading comprehension. He was reading at a c, d level and was able to do these successfully.
Be prepared to wait for delivery
The product is great. My son is struggling with reading and in the 1st grade. I plan to provide him extra help with this workbook. The company didn’t ship the product on time and it took longer then advertised.
Good practice book
Nice practice question for my daughter, it’s easy to understand and there is a happy and sad face on the side to see if they made the answer correctly. She is very proud of herself when she got all the questions right:)
Not worth it
The book is not in any order. Very confusing
Ok....but
I love the book, didn’t know each lesson was the same concept, a story, then multiple choice questions. I would buy this book again if needed.
Easy to read and fun for kids!! A must buy!
My son loves reading and answering the questions by bubbling it in! He looks forward to the homework and requests it! He is doing great at reading & comprehension & this workbook is of so much help! Love it & recommend it!

Building reading and comprehension skills
I use this book to teach my 6 year old to read and speak english. There has been an improvement in both areas including comprehension. She should pass the first grade. Thank you.
Great tool
Engaging and kept my sons interest. Purchased for extra practice & it’s helped him a lot
but the comprehension portion is excellent.
I wish the reading was a little more in quantity for each lesson, but the comprehension portion is excellent.
Purchased used.
This book came in excellent shape with a CD. Love the short stories and questions provided. One stop shop.
The text is good but the questions are difficult
I think the text is good for my grade 1 student. However, the questions are very difficult and need readers to get the "big picture" to answer.

Good for my 1st grader
This is the second book we got her to do. She attends public school so this is just for her to do on her free time. Personally I love it because she doesn't need help reading direction and can read and complete all the parts independently. Readings are short but for independent work, I prefer that so she doesn't get too intimidated.

OMG!!!! I have been looking for something like this for a long time. It is a WONDERFUL resource to use daily with my students. There is a lesson for each day of the week, then on Day 4/5 students must write a comprehensive paragraph. My students have learned so much from these comprehension stories!!!!

Great book for reading comprehension which my son was struggling with. Love that it comes with a cd so I can print out sheets for my daughter.
As directed, I based size on Rubie's size chart. Was misled!
I am very disappointed. The product states to please go by the Rubie's size chart and I did. I got a small size for my daughter. It is available in 3 sizes: toddler, small and medium. I chose the size small based on the weight, which states 36 to 52 lbs. My daughter is 40lbs so this size should fit her fine. However, it fits her too snug. I think the sizes are misleading. I also received a small/petite, which was never listed on the chart posted. Am very upset!!!
Excellent!!!
If anyone would like their child to advance in reading they should buy this booklet. My grandbaby has really improved her reading skills.
Great practice book!
Good for my first grade son!! Very helpful!
Awesome book!
I love this series and have all of them. I use them daily in my Autistic Support class. Great independent work and homework.
Helped a Little, Especially Sight Words
Trying to find really good resources to help my daughter learn to read was difficult. She loved looking at books, especially the pictures, and had an excellent oral vocabulary. I thought she would have no problem learning to read. I was very wrong! While I enjoyed going through this workbook, she did not. Yes, I do think some parts may be more appropriate for older children, but I also did find out that a child with dyslexia or other disability in reading will not do well with any workbook, regardless of how great it is. She became very frustrated and started to dread any kind of reading instruction. Once she was diagnosed and provided expert instruction in reading that addressed her dyslexia, she returned to loving books. She still has problems but has come a long, long way. And her love for books has returned. I have recommendations - 1) do try reading workbooks and this is a good one for most children 2) keep reading fun and if the child does not want to “work” on reading, don’t force it, and 3) if others in your family have had reading problems, do have the child checked for a possible reading disability as well as any vision difficulties.
kind of disappointing
This book is very inviting to children's eyes on first glance of the cover. My younger kids all ran to it and wanted it to be theirs. The bright colors on the cover really got their attention. Upon opening the book, however, none of the lessons are in color. They are all black and white and shades of grayscale in between. That was a bit disappointing. The lessons are short and easy to do. They should be able to get through a page easily without getting bored or losing their desire to finish it. There's literally like 4 questions on almost every page and those that don't have any questions tend to be more of a build your own story page. The problem is, my kids don't want to do one little lesson a day, they wanted to blow through several days at once which kind of defeats the approach of this book. The lessons also seem too easy for a first grade reading level. It's definitely more than an average kindergarten level, but I feel like it falls short of what a first grade level reader should be able to do. The enclosed cd included with the book contains "reproducible resource materials and student activity pages". But from what I was able to discern of the "reproducible resource materials and student activity pages" it was literally the exact same page from the book. That was disappointing. It was also difficult to get the cd to run on my computer. Usually my discs auto play on loading in the drive, but this one didn't. I had to go play hide and seek to get it to show up. The materials also run in adobe format, so if you don't like adobe, or are trying to avoid having adobe on your computers vs one of the other type of similar programs, be aware that you will have to have an adobe reader to use this disc, however, you aren't missing anything by not using it at all from what I was able to see. Overall, I'm not that impressed. It would make good busywork for your child inbetween lessons with other kids perhaps, or to help cement some fundamentals your child may be lacking, but it didn't feel in depth enough to really be that substantial a lesson, even if it is one little lesson per day. I probably wouldn't buy this myself unless I'm just looking for something to keep them busy on a car ride to somewhere, but even then, there's better out there.
I'm always looking for great supplemental books for my kids to work on throughout ...
As a homeschooling mom, I'm always looking for great supplemental books for my kids to work on throughout the day. My 1st grader struggled with reading this year but this book focuses more on comprehension which is just as important. We would go through the readings together and then he could answer most of the questions on his own. Since there are 180 days of worksheets in this one book, I could do one a day throughout the whole school year, or I could do a few every couple days, which we tried out a few times. It wasn't an overwhelming amount of work for one sitting so he wasn't frustrated easily. I will use this book again for my daughter next year!
Four Stars
It’s helpful but found grammar/mistype. “Its has....” should be “It has...”
Excellent option for your child and a great value. A staple for our first grader.
I have a boy that just started First Grade and we worked through this book in the summer and even now that school has started. He is quite smart but the exercise for his brain is excellent. The exercises are generally pretty short (like 8-10 minutes each maybe) so you can do several in a day. Often times one will be reading a story and then answering questions, but some involve writing what they learned from the story. I would say the curriculum certainly seems to be appropriate for the age level and seems to have prepared him well. Of course at this age, as long as they are doing something, it is really helping. I like the versatility of this book in that it is not just reading, but writing and comprehension as well. There is a quiz after many of the stories and of course it gets more complicated as it goes on. Highly recommended from a 1st grade dad,.
Methodical, Easy to follow and measure
My 5 year old boys are a little behind on reading - not that they are not capable, but they missed their first grade by just a month, they got delayed into public school by an year - which is in a way good. Now to keep them busy - this was one of the books which I started teaching them - it is pretty amazing that within a month - they have not only started reading a few words (instead of reading an image), but also started to like reading. The book really builds from the basics, establishes a good foundation and measures the progress.
Well don exercises teach a child to contemplate what they are reading
Learning to read is a bit tricky and particularly the English language which has such fun things happening like There, Their and They're for a child these are not good times. 180 days of Reading actually focuses on not only the differences of same sounding words, their meaning and when and how they are used but helps children to pick up on tone when reading and picking up meaning in vocabulary and sentence structure when discriptive terms are not there. These are brief one page exercises complete with thoughtful questions that make a child think analytically about what they are reading and this is a tremendous boost.
Organized, well-thought out.
This would be a nice tool to have in the toolbox for homeschooling or the regular school. It's well organized and well thought-out. You can use the book as is without having to print any additional supplies, or if you have more than one child there is a CD to print additional pages if needed. It would be nice if there was (and perhaps there is I just didn't see it) a Summer school shorter version to use for the shorter "days" of Summer break, but you could still use this very easily as a tool to help during that break to prepare for the upcoming school year.
Great resource for Parents and Educators
This book is a great tool for educators or parents who want to give their first graders a lot of practice with reading, comprehension, and composition. I like the book because it is nice to have a physical book to flip through for the lessons, but I love the CD-ROM that came with it. The CD-ROM has all of the lessons in pdf for print out as well as the assessment documents. So, if you don't want to fuss with lugging a book to the copier, you can pop the CD-ROM in your computer and print the copies from there. The lessons themselves are daily, and allow for scoring in the margins. There are summarized tables for assessing the scores afterward. All in all an excellent resource for anyone with a first grader. Highly recommend.
These are really outstanding workbooks
This whole series is great, we've used them for 3 years. Definitely recommend. There are a couple other publishers on Amazon that have equally good books. Sylvan are terrific, so are Spectrum. The BIG books (Big First Grade, etc) are ok, and they're very inexpensive. But they have a lot more "busy" activities, puzzles, connect the dots, still good but not as much academic focus as the 180 books. These prep books are so inexpensive (ranging from $6 to $20) it's very affordable to buy 2 or 3.
standardized test prep at a k/1st level
This is a good beginning reading book. It's first grade level but I feel that's very flexible. I'm using it with my homeschooled kindergartener. Once a child is reading fluently they're ready for this book. I like that it's set up to give one lesson worth of reinforcement material for each day of a 180 day school year. I'm not crazy about the standardized testing format. It really is a 'teach to the test' sort of a workbook rather than a 'let's learn how to read' workbook. For a child who needs practice with this sort of format or who just enjoys busy work this is a good choice.
Great Learning Resource
Anything that can help my grandchild aside from what she learns in school is an A+ in my book. I started out homeschooling her. Now she goes to public school, but I still homeschool her during the week, weekends and holidays. These books coming handy. She loves to read, but often I worried if she was comprehending what she was reading. This book gives short bits of a story and then asks questions pertaining to that passage. It causes children to pay attention and to think about what they have read. This particular book is a bit easy for her because it is for 1st grade, she is going to 2nd grade but reads on a 4th grade level. This book still comes in handy. In addition to multiple choice questions, it asks children to describe different aspects in passages, such as how they made them feel or what they think the author meant, things like that. There are assessments, an answer key and a resource CD included. There are other books in this series that go up to the 6th grade. I will be ordering the 3rd and 4th grade versions for her soon.
Good
I used this book as a supplement to what my son was already learning in first grade. This would be great for supplementing or for using to work with kids needing extra help with their reading. This is also great for breaks from school. Definitely recommend.
very nice book
This is a nice book. We use it at home to supplement some of my daughter's school reading. It is very well done-starts with easier concepts and gets harder as the days go on, but not without explaining the new words and concepts. The stories are simple, but fun and the pictures are great too. It has other little activities as well. Overall, I really like it and my daughter enjoys it, so that's good.
Really great practice books, with cd's
These are very handy practice books for a teacher. They have a CD Rom that contains the practice pages so you can reprint them as needed and will retain all the image quality over time.
Great practice book.
Great book, just what I needed for my first grader. She does school at home and needed some extra practice to really do well with reading. The days are just the right length and she enjoys reading the short passages and writing. I really like this book and I think I would purchase the next grade when she is done with this one, I can see us using this over the summer months and putting her ahead for second grade.
Must have.
Very good exercise for my 6 year old daughter! She enjoyed doing it!
Reading comprehension not learning to read practice!
Returned it, not worth the cost!
Great
These were great to use during the summer between 1st and 2nd grade. Very sturdy and interesting.
Keep skills sharp
I will be utilizing this book during my daughter's 4 week Christmas break. I want to keep her skills sharp. I'll pull this out again during the summer.
