A Delight for All Backyard Hen Keepers, Both Urban and Rural!
I love reading Lisa Steele's "Fresh Eggs Daily" for tips on chicken keeping as well as photos of Maine, which is so very different from my own environment in Oakland CA! "101 Chicken Keeping Hacks" follows the same spirit with gorgeous photos and print layout along with pages of tips on topics like: repelling mice , homemade electrolytes for heat exhaustion (yes, that is a very real danger to CA chickens), and recipes for things like natural easter egg dyes (the book would make a great easter basket gift!) , and making herbal mite spray. The author is a many generation chicken keeper with an old fashioned American DIY spirit. I am a 15 year urban keeper with little DIY capability but we are united by our love of puttering around with the hens outside (well, on my end, that means watching the hens dig up the garden). Lovely book. Ten stars!
Invaluable book
As of this past spring, I was a complete novice to raising and keeping chickens. Lisa Steele’s blog on Pinterest has been super helpful for me. As soon as her book was available, I ordered it! This is my chicken keeping “bible”. My favorites so far are the sections on how to keep the coop clean and healthy; what herbs are great for chicken health.
get this book - you won't regret it!
There are SO MANY good little tips in this book. I've only made it through the first few chapters and I'm already implementing several of the hacks; like the home made layer feed recipe (instead of purchasing in large quantities, I made a smaller amount in parts instead of by pound). I'm already noticing a difference in my chicken's yokes. I made the window/glass cleaner and I'm using it in my house too because it really works amazingly - works on my bathroom mirror too! I have a fly spray brewing as we speak and my chickens have enjoyed several herbal teas already. I can't recommend this book enough. It is worth it, even if you have 10 other chicken books. this book is gold.
Easy to learn from Lisa!
I LOVE this book! My husband & I just bought a hobby farm which came with a 2 year young chicken coop with a huge fenced in chicken run, so naturally I'd like to raise my very own chickens. I've never done that before so Lisa Steele is my "go to girl" for learning all I need to know in order to raise happy & healthy chickens. I appreciate how easy to follow her techniques & recipes are. I'm a "thrifty/repurpose" kind of girl & so is Lisa. She gives great gardening tips as well. I rate this book 5++ stars as it's an easy/fun read & makes me happy. :) Thank you Lisa for passing along all your knowledge as you have a faithful follower & promoter here in north-central Wisconsin.
A Must Read!
I am preparing to keep chickens and in my search for knowledge learned about Lisa Steele. A well respected and knowledgeable resource for all things chicken, this book and her first book Fresh Eggs Daily as well as her book Gardening for Chickens are must haves! I have learned so much from Lisa about chickens and their care. She is resourceful and doesn't ask you to go out and buy the latest and greatest. Rather, she provides practical and economical suggestions for keeping chickens happy and healthy. Not only that, her books are fun!
Great Information and Ideas
I’ve been reading books on raising chickens. I’m in the process of setting up a coop and then getting some chicks. I want to know as much as I can before I even purchase my first chick. This book is great!! I can’t say enough good things about it. It’s written in a way that’s fun, easy and informative. The pictures are delightful. I have a feeling this is going to be one of my favorite “go to” books!!
Simply Awesome
I really love the ideas in this book. We have already used some of the recipes on multiple occasions and have lots of new ideas to use with our flock. I like some of the additional ideas not related to chickens, but would rather have more chicken ideas.
Eggcellent!!
As a fellow chicken keeper and homesteader I love all the great "hacks" Lisa's covered in her book! I've implemented quite a few already and the girls, rooster and duck are all very happy. Hey happy hens, happy eggs right? I really like how many things can be done with just yard sale or thrift/antique store finds or even what you have laying around.
Wow! Just WOW!
My younger brother introduced me to LIsa Steele just this year, and I have already become a die-hard fan of hers. So I just had to get this book as a Christmas present for him! He loved it as well and it was his favorite present! The pictures are amazing! The ideas are timeless! This book has already been so helpful with the DIY egg wash and coop disinfectant! An amazing book from an amazing woman!
A must have for any chicken keeper
Great book from the chicken and duck expert! Lisa is crafty, smart, and truly cares about raising chickens and ducks in the most humane, spoiled way possible.

Spoil Your Chickens - For Real!
Lisa Steele from Fresh Eggs Daily does it again! This book is full of practical easy diy projects for your flock and home. I will be implementing or have already started all of these “hacks” for our flock.
Love this book!
Another great informative book from Lisa Steele. I learn something new from every book , and being a first time chicken pet parent it’s another great resource . I highly recommend this book as well as all her others .
great new ideas on Chicken Keeping
Lisa’s book is packed with new ideas on Chicken Keeping related to (1) feeding your chickens, (2) in the coop, (3) the run, (4) raising chickens on the cheap, (5) chicken health, (6) hacks for your home, and (7) in the garden. Steele provides a recipe for “homemade layer feed” and notes that offering black soldier fly larva to chickens in conjunction with other ingredients will provide them with methionine (an essential amino acid) and some additional calcium. Steele also mentions that the USDA’ Farmer’s Bulletin states that baby chicks fed a ration of oats will be healthier than chicks that aren’t offered oats. Oats have also been shown to reduce death rates, pecking, and aggression while bolstering resistance to heat exhaustion. Steele also reveals the top twelve dried herbs that chickens need. Here are just a few of them. Basil is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Cilantro is an antioxidant that builds strong bones while also being high in vitamin A for vision and vitamin K for blood clotting. Dandelions improve digestion, kidney and liver health. Dill helps respiratory and digestive health. Mint purportedly helps keep out the mice because mice don’t like the smell of it. There are also many other benefits listed for marigold, marjoram, oregano, parsley, sage, tarragon, and thyme. Fermented feed. Although Schneider and McCrea (2018) believe that the advantages of fermented feed do not necessarily outweigh the disadvantages, Steele lists a few advantages of fermented feed. First, fermented food makes it easier for chickens to digest the food and it increases the vitamins and digestible proteins. Secondly, fermented feed leads to stronger, thicker shells and larger eggs. But the best part is that with fermented feeds, chickens will eat less, up to 1/3 less per day. In addition to fermented feed potentially lowering your feed cost, another way to potentially lower your feed cost is by growing fodder. This will also produce eggs with more vibrant orange yolks and improved health. Fodder can be produced from whole grains such as barley, oats, or wheat. Adding Apple cider vinegar to your chicken’s water a few times a week keeps the water cleaner and controls the bacteria both in the water and in their digestive system. Vinegar also may combat the coccidia pathogen. The author also had some great ideas on preventing water from freezing using black rubber tubs which absorb heat from the sun and by keeping tennis balls or ping pong balls in the water. The slightest breeze will create movement on the water surface which prevents it from freezing. The author rightly recommends using a galvanized metal container for food storage. The container lid should be secured with a bungee cord to keep predators away from it and this type of storage will prevent mice, bugs, and moisture from getting into the feed and transmitting disease The author recommends a charcoal supplement as a good source of potassium, phosphorus and magnesium. Charcoal ingested by a chicken also binds with ammonia fumes in its manure and helps to neutralize the fumes. Charcoal also protects against coccidiosis and other internal parasites. Steele recommends converting an old chair into a nesting area and using golf balls or plastic Easter eggs filled with sand or egg-shaped stones in the nest boxes. This shows the chickens where they are supposed to lay their eggs. In the run, chicken swings are a great way for bullied hens to get away from their bully. To keep the snakes away, the author recommends collecting eggs often and sprinkling sulfur powder with cayenne powder around the perimeter of the coop. Chicken keepers need to keep hawks and foxes away from their bird. One way to do this is with a scarecrow, aka “scarehawk.” Another way is for the males in the household to urinate around the perimeter of the coop and run on a regular basis. Steele had a great chapter on chicken health. My first favorite tip was the herbal poultry powder dust-bath to keep the birds free of external parasites. Steele recommends mixing food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) with some dried, powdered herbs, such as thyme and lavender which work as an effective mite treatment. These same herbs, along with garlic, can be used in an herbal mite spray. Steele notes that coconut oil can be used to treat scaly leg mites. Finally, adding crushed garlic to the chicken’s water provides them with an immune-system boost, aids their respiration, and helps them repel external parasites like mites, lice and ticks. Some of the ideas in this book were a bit too expensive for me to consider trying such as blueberry and strawberry ice treats (p. 29). Other suggestions had no photos such as the tiered treat station mentioned on page 75. But overall this book is a great reference for chicken keepers.
This was fun with some good images and tips.
Since we have added our hen house this year, I thought this would be a good book to read. I loved the pictures of fluffy chickens, including some on swings and wearing tutus! There are good tips for cleaning the coop, the chickens and the eggs. There are some homemade recipes for food treats, herbal teas (I’m excited to try these) and homemade salves. I like the suggestion of sanitizing lotion at the pen. I am very careful to wash my hands anytime I pet the chickens (yes, they like to be petted), collect eggs or touch the coop and run gates. I made note of herbs and treats that are healthy and those that are poisonous to chickens. the I know I won’t implement all of the ideas, but there are healthy ones and fun ones. I might not be making curtains to spruce up our coop but I will try the frozen treats. And I hope to get hubby to make a swing for the chickens to play on. The recycling ideas are wonderful too - wish I had more time for those. I certainly can recommend this to new chicken breeders and to those who love to learn fun ideas and things about chickens. Fun, appealing, and practical
101 Chicken Keeping Hacks is a cheerful, upbeat look at ways to improve ('hack') chicken husbandry. Aimed at the newer suburban chicken wrangler, it provides a humorous look at simple ways of upcycling, repurposing, and reusing items which the reader might have lying around. Written by 'Fresh Eggs Daily' blogger/media personality/chicken wrangler Lisa Steele and published by Quarto on their Voyageur imprint, it's 176 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats. This is a very appealing, whimsical, and upbeat book. There are a bunch of cute decor ideas included (her chicken coop setup includes cute gingham curtains). There are tips and tricks for every area of chicken keeping. The hacks are arranged in chapters dealing with food, housing, outdoor areas & runs, raising chicks, chicken health & welfare, your (human) home use (hair rinses, egg storage, recipes, etc), and outdoor/garden. There are a number of these ideas which are cute and whimsical and are utterly impractical. On the other hand there are a number of really good and practical ideas. It's a mixed bag. I really like the idea of repurposing and upcycling. There are bound to be some tips which are usable by most readers. The photography is very clear and full of lovely, appealing, and healthy chickens. There's a useful resource list (aimed mostly at North American readers) and a handy index at the back of the book. Well written and fun. Would make a nice gift for a beginning backyard chicken-herder (or soon-to-be). Four stars. Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Chicken keeping hacks
This is a cheap and cheerful viewpoint on chicken keeping. The author tells us at the outset that we are welcome to spend thousands on coops and equipment, if we'd prefer, but she finds that repurposing, mending and using old reliables like enamel pans does the job. Depending on how much free ranging your birds do, you may want to give them the seed and seaweed mix with added insects recommended. I don't consider everything in the book a hack - a feed recipe isn't a workaround in itself. But I admire the application of ingenuity and re-use we are shown. The colour photos are lovely and might encourage some people to start keeping hens. I'm pleased the author has shared her experience and I am sure most interested readers will pick up several bright ideas. I downloaded this book from Net Galley. This is an unbiased review.
Must have for newbie Baby Chick owners!
I love Lisa's blog and FB page but it was great to have her best tips in one place for easy and quick reference. I learn so much from all her insights and advice not to mention her wonderful hacks! In preparing for my first 15 silkies I have relied heavily on her product recommendations as well as things you can do easily on your own to prepare. Highly recommended.
Cool Hacks Galore!
Whether you're just starting to raise chickens, or been doing it for years, this book will give you a lot of cool ideas! They're all pretty easy, and cheap, too! Especially cool is that many use/re-purpose old items, and there's hacks specific to the season, too.
Nothing New
Everything can be found on her website, and most of this stuff is useless until you need it. For example, all the home remedies. If my chickens get sick, I'll google it. I was looking more for ideas to entertain my chickens, spice up the coop, ect.
A Must-Have for All Chicken Keepers
This is an informative,well-written book that every backyard chicken keeper should own. Filled with valuable tips and tricks, 101 Chicken Keeping Hacks will change the way you raise chickens. It's perfect for all types of chicken keepers and is filled with great DIY projects. It covers everything from coop curtains to what you can do if your chicken is prone to frostbite. You should definitely have this book on hand!
