Nice Photos with little content.
Nice photos but Little content to actually plan by. Each entry gets maybe 3 pages. one or both have Striking photo. There isn’t a synopsis of; Best time to visit, Area’s highlights, Closest airport and travel options, Lodging choices.... Suggest instead, Your Guide to The National Parks by Michael Oswald. It had e v e r y t h i n g one needs to plan well.
Nice book on the national parks
I purchased 3 national park books, liked this one the best. Good for if you generally know what you'd like to do while vacationing or things you'd like to see, but need more ideas on what places would be a good match given your interests. Then once you pick one or some to go to, might work well to get a book just on those places, to get more detail for planning purposes.
Vibrant colors, a must have!
I purchased this for my folks. They've just retired and are taking their fifthwheel for months at a time. The pictures are stunning and the information is priceless. Amazing as a gift or keep it for yourself, you won't regret it.
Good starting point but lacks details
This book gives great starting points to get ideas about where you may want to visit on your next vacation. There are lots of ideas and beautiful pictures. I was a bit disappointed about the "when to go" aspect. I was expecting details like when to go in relation to seasons (to see fall colors, spring flowers, avoid snow or extreme temperatures) and when the busy times/less busy times of the year. Regardless, as I mention it is a good starting point to get ideas about where to go. From there, you always have Google...
Great for Planning Road Trips
Great for planning road trips. and/or putting park visits on bucket list. Gives you general synopsis and description of various parks with full color photos. Basic layout of each location are as follows: -Gives brief description, then goes in depth on what you can expect. -'Big picture' section: includes date established, size, annual visitors, visitor centers, entrance fee and website. -'Did you know' section: random trivia about the site -'Lay your head', 'meet the neighbors', 'event horizon', 'chow down' section: These are basically the 5,000 ideas* part of the book. Gives suggestions on nearby resorts, landmarks/historical sites, restaurants, hotel/lodges, festivals and wildlife refuge. Not all sections are presented in each park mentioned, maybe 1 or two from the list *There are also top 10 lists sprinkled in to switch up the pace -Around half a dozen photos of each park You can get more information online about each park, but this book if fun to flip through and gives you a brief glance of famous parks. If anything will make a great coffee table book for guests and/or customers
Beautiful book, with lots of content and stunning images
Perfect coffee table book, great to day-dream about the next destination. It's 10x10 so it's not large, but it's a great addition to our living room. Great content, glossy pages.
Very nice book
Beautiful book awesome facts. We gave it as a gift and was received with so much love
It's worth it
Relevant, well written, beautiful photos.
Chock full of info!
We love this book. You can find information online about parks, but sometimes I need a break from the internet. It's nice to sit down and flip through a book. We keep this in our RV so it's on hand as we travel around the country. I'm really glad that they included maps of the US and Canada which show the actual location of each park. Some of their other books, like 100 Drives 5000 ideas, do not include maps. It's helpful that the Information about each park includes ideas for different seasons. That way you can focus on activities during the time of year when you're at the park. One pet peeve, which is probably just me - They didn't need to include so many photos of animals and flowers (here's a sleeping white tail deer or a baby opossum hanging from his tail). Instead they could have included additional pictures more relevant to the activities at/near the park or scenery of the park.
Nice pictures but not very useful
I was hoping to use this book to help planning a camping road trip. It is way to general and I don"t like how it is organized. Really not useful for anything other than perusing and looking at photos.

Accuracy?
Interesting book to spend a few minutes thumbing through on the coffee table. Page 140-141 show a picture of the Mississippi river at St. Anthony falls in Minneapolis... But the caption is confluence of the St Croix and Mississippi rivers. That location is about 40 miles downstream at Hastings, Mn.
Beautiful images.
The photos in this book are amazing. It’s a paperback coffee table worthy book. It was given as a Christmas gift and everyone who noticed it has enjoyed picking it up and reading a bit. We haven’t had it long enough to plan a trip to any of the parks but it appears it will really help in that regard.
Ok but lacking in information
This book has some helpful information but I was hoping for more information or more specific information than this book offers.
Great photos great content
When I was looking through the reviews for this book, I wasn’t really interested in all the comments about the photos because I was more interested in knowing about the content of the book.. but let me tell you. After receiving this book I fully understand. The photos are incredible. I don’t even care if the content sucks! (Which it doesn’t, but it was a gift for someone else). I’m telling you this book is awesome. From the info to all the amazing shots, I would definitely recommend for the traveler or outdoorsman(or woman) in your life
Excellent
Bought this as a Christmas present for my daughter who likes camping/hiking and she loves it! Going to buy another copy for me to help plan some trips. The parks are a wonderful free or nearly free activity anyone can afford.
Awesome
I can't wait to use this informative book when I retire and hit the road to see our great Nation.
Beautiful but lacks depth
Beautiful photographs, but more useful as a coffee table book than a travel guide. It lacks the depth of a great travel resource. Still, it holds enough to lead you to some wonderful places with more research.
Beautiful book, My dad loved it!
I rarely have time to read anything these days and this book had me captivated I had to study every page before I gave it to my dad and was glad it would be in the family so I could spend more time with it! I'm a photographer and think the photos are absolutely stunning! Made me want to visit each spot. Great price too!
Made the perfect gift
I purchased this book for a friend that retired and planned to travel in a camper for a few years. She loves this book, and enjoys picking out her next vacation spot with her grandchildren.
Lovely book
I sent this to my mother in law as a gift and she loved it. Wonderful pictures and information on places she hasn't yet been and now wants to go see..

Great book
Had to order a replacement because the last was in bad shape when it arrived. This time it was perfect! Had my replacement within 24 hours. It's a great book and I recommend it highly.
Find those not so well known & crowded cool places
This is informative & I like that it include pros & cons of going at different times of the year. Looking forward to road trips after this pandemic is over. Another pro is that it gives good information on some not so well known & crowded stops to explore !

Fun to thumb through and should be a help when visiting unfamiliar areas to ensure we see the important sites.
Some much information you can't find online!
Got this as a gift for my boyfriend after going on a road trip up PCH recently. There are so many places in this book that you can't find much information of online and I have to say that is the beauty of buying a book, the effort put into this is amazing! We already have our next trip planned out!
It’s ok book
U can find everything in this book online. Sorry I didn’t really find it useful for hiking and camping in every state.

Tourism Necessary
I'm busy at work. So I want to go out to play, but I don't have much time to arrange it. I bought this book to see where it is interesting.Usually work is busy. So I want to go out and play, but do I have too much time to arrange. I bought this book to see where it was fun. This book is really worth it. He introduced many interesting places.
Thorough book written in a concise format.
My sons wanted to travel west this year and visit several national parks. The book was a great way for us to discover what the various parks offered and help prioritize those parks that where the most aligned to their interests.

GREAT MAP FOR THE ADVENTUROUS
THIS CAME IN HANDY when we charted our bucket list. in the west.
Buy this Book if you want a great resource on our national and state parks. Makes a great gift
Beautiful book. Very helpful info along with spectacular photos
Lacking for Midwest states
Beautiful pictures but lacking details. Most focus is on the east and west coasts. I am from Minnesota and there are so few parks listed for MN and surrounding states. My family has 2 kids under the age of 2 so we don't plan on going all that far from home. With that in kind the book is quite useless.
Great buy!
Could not have bought a better book to start looking for new vacation spots!
Excited
Loved the book and can't wait to travel

Worst book ever
Too Heavy and lots of words I do not recommend.... my kids hate it
Great gift
Great gift for someone who like to travel and nature.
5 stars
A really nice and detailed book
Well informed and photographed! But, no Midwest hikes
I love it! Super great pics and information. Just be warned there is next to nothing in the Midwest, so if that's where you intend on hiking most, you're better off with a state-spicific book. But otherwise, no complaints, it's great!
Beautiful Book
Beautiful book was purchased as a gift and was well received.

Eh.
I think I was expecting more than what is provided. It’s more of a brief/general overview with very little in-depth information.
Great reference to parks
Love this book. It's a great reference to all the national parks in the US. This is my planning guide I will be using to visit and photograph each state and their parks. Some I did not know existed. Really fun to go through and very inspirational.

Wonderful book if you're looking for a fun summer vacation
I've been a travel photographer most of my life and I also write quite a bit about travel (I was the author of the monthly "Traveling Photographer" column for Popular Photography for more than 10 years) and I find these National Geographic overviews are a great way to discover new places. While many of the places in this particular book are places I've heard of (and been to many of them) it's still chock full of new places and new travel ideas. I was kind of astounded by how many place I'd never heard of, to be honest. There's really no better way to plan a trip than to just flip through a book like this one and get a quick overview of a state or region. Once you find a few places you can turn to the web for most detailed info. There's even a "Resources" section (short but useful) at the back of the book that will guide you to some more in-depth National Geo sites. One of the great things about this book is just the theme itself: 100 Parks, 5,000 Ideas. You can pretty much just flip through the book and you'll absolutely find a bunch of great and fun travel ideas. The first night that I looked at this book I used Post-its to mark things I thought were worthy of reading more about and before I knew it the book was overflowing with Post-its! The book is just overflowing with that wonderful National Geo photography and the reproduction is better than some of their other books--it looks like someone put a lot of effort into the design and the quality of this particular guide. A keeper for sure and one of the best travel-idea books you're likely to find.
Gorgeous Book
5 stars for the photos. 4 stars for the content. The content is fine. Really. But I'm from the midwest - Ohio, to be precise - and only one park is listed in Ohio. So I looked and there are a bunch of states that aren't even represented. Are there really no parks worth seeing in South Carolina? Indiana? Iowa? Kansas? Vermont? Mississippi? Really? The photos are gorgeous. Beautiful color photos on every page. And the content is fine if a bit predictable. I wish they'd list more options for camping/cabins. And I wish more places were represented! There's gorgeous stuff to be seen in every state.
Great for initial stage of planning a cross-country trip
This book offers a good start to planning a cross-country trip in which you are seeking natural areas (historical areas are covered too, but not nearly as much). I’ve worked as a park ranger with the National Park Service and have lived at 4 of the National Parks mentioned here – the information this book offers on those parks is indeed accurate, though very brief. This is good for planning for several reasons. First, it offers two maps, one of the US and one of Canada, that clearly show where each park is located. Second, the pictures (which are the glory of this book) can give you a good idea about how much an area may appeal to you – and this is lacking in quite a few other books that give a brief overview of parks to visit. As far as the coverage of each park, there is very little written description of what each park has to offer, enough to give you a basic idea. Most of the coverage is about specific places in or near the park to visit (again, not much more than just a mention). But that’s JustMe.
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC HAS DONE IT AGAIN!
Love this book! I have always been a fan of National Geographic books and magazines, they're in a league of their own. This book has a wealth of information on North America national, state and city parks. The book also features tons of travel ideas to help you plan an amazing trip to explore USA and Canada (USA covers 3/4 of the book). Depending on what travel experiences you would prefer, this book helps you plan them, whether it's in the mountains or at the seashore or anything else in between. The book features not just well known parks, but also much less well known parks that most people probably never heard of but are worth exploring as well as scenic drives and archeological discoveries just to name a couple. It also features interesting tid bits sprinkled throughout. My favorite features are the photos, they're simply stunning! Additionally, there are hundreds of travel ideas and this book makes me want to pack my bags and explore! This book also makes a great gift for a traveler or a budding photographer. But, I'm keeping my copy!
Nice for a Library or gift. Lots of Travel Destiations & Ideas in this book!
National Geographic 100 Parks 5000 Ideas, is a good place to start for beginning travelers. It would also make a nice gift for a graduate or newly wed couple - they can click off places to go and create bucket lists. With almost 400 pages of descriptions and pictures, with areas of interests geographically divided, there are plenty of great vacation destinations in this book. Each area of interest has notable places, scenic trails, and places to stay while in the area. While I have been to many of the destinations in this book, there are always going to be suggestions and ideas for places to go when I visit my favorite parks, like Redwood National Forest in Northern California, and Crater Lake, in Oregon. This book is a great for any library or to keep at home, for dreaming and planning. It's nicely done and the pictures are lovely. It's a soft bound book that travels well.
It's An Idea Book, Not a Travel Planner
If you want a quick overview of highlights of a park, this book is ideal. If you're planning the trip and you're a DIY person like myself, then you'll need to spend hours researching online all the details. For Haleakala National Park, the book mentions that "authorities have implemented a reservation system" to watch the sun rise on the summit. Although this is important information, the book does not mention that it's tricky to buy a vehicle pass which costs $1. What hours of online research will tell you is that two days before you want to see the sun rise at the summit of Haleakala, you better be hovering over your computer at 4pm Hawaii time so that when the passes are released, you can punch the button to buy a vehicle pass. By 4:05pm, all passes will be SOLD OUT. Because weather is fickle on the islands, a vehicle pass, should you be lucky to get one, does not guarantee you to see the sun rise or that it's cold and windy at the summit so you'll need to pack your layers, winter coat, mittens, and hat. Additionally, the book mentions the famous Keonehe'ehe'e "Sliding Sands" Trail, but omits the part about it being a strenuous hike and is meant for experienced hikers only. Since the book is truly about ideas and what is possible, know that you'll have to do hours of research before visiting or hire a tour company to fulfill your dreams.
Phenomenal photos, as you would expect; content is less stellar
It is hard to go wrong with a National Geographic book. My youngest son and my husband are both National Parks fans, so I couldn't pass this up. Here is what I liked about it and what I found disappointing: What I like: a.) As always this publisher, the photography is stunning. Thumbing through the pages of this book is to see a buffet of stunning photos that capture the best sides of the parks represented. That I didn't like: a.) National Geographic magazine is a larger format designed to show off the skills of N.G. photographers. The photos in this book would have been better show-cased in a larger format--at least the size of the magazine. b.) The title is like click bait. When the author says he is featuring 100 parks and 5000 ideas, you think he is going to pick out the best of the best, but he flat out tells you, "By no means is 100 Parks, 5000 Ideas a list of the best parks in the United States and Canada." So what is it then--a book thrown together from the pictures he had? I feel a little duped--I want more than inspiration, I want those 100 parks and 5000 ideas to be something special. So there you have it. This is a nice book, but if you are looking for more than inspiration, there are better books out there.
A nicely illustrated book to inspire you to visit scenic and historic parks
This is a paperback book that includes information about numerous state, local, and national parks across the USA and Canada. Since it includes so many parks it doesn't offer too much depth or detail about most of them. It just provides an overview and basic information and references for you to research these locations further on your own. This might be a nice coffee table book for a travel agency if it had a hard cover. I think this would have worked better with a larger page size and hard cover format. It's a nice book for those who enjoy visiting scenic attractions and looking for inspiration but there is room for improvement here.
Beautiful photography and interesting information about North Amwrican Parks.
This is a fabulous book which is to be expected as it is published by National Geographic. Firstly the pictures are full color and absolutley beautiful. This covers both the United States and Canada. I believe almost every state is covered. Each Park is displayed in gorgeous pictures and Natgeo describes the Park and better yet gives details about the Park History and the most important what a visitor should see and experience. For instance the section on the Black Hills Forest describes how big it is, how many visitors it receives and entrance fees. This is standard for all the parks. It also has sections about motoring around the area or biking. It then goes on to the sights to see like Deadwood, Black Elk Peak, wind Cave and Mount Rushmore National Park with other sights thrown in too. It also gives short descriptions of sight outside the park like Devil's Tower and the Badlands. Some sections have suggestions for Hotels and places to eat. Also throughout the book are top tens, like top ten Historic Lodges, top 10 spots for Winter Sports and top 10 museums. This is a handy book for those who like to travel throughout the United States and Canada.
Great book for ideas to pursue when planning your vacation ...
This will come in especially handy for those who, like me, enjoy road trips. I've made it a point to visit as many state and national parks as I can, and having a book like this early on would have helped give me a "heads up" on specific things to look at/for. It's the usual National Geographic quality: beautiful photography, detailed maps, easy-to-read-and-understand descriptions of the places you can visit. I love that it treats city, state, and national parks equally. As the author, Joe Yogurst, states in the introduction: "By no means is '100 Parks, 5000 Ideas' a list of the best parks in the United States and Canada. Rather, it's a window into the wide variety of green spaces scattered across this part of the world and the multitude of things that you can do in those parks and similar areas." Yogurst encourages the reader to use the book to spark ideas for further exploration based on one's own interests. And there is inspiration abounding here. It's easy to get lost in this book -- there's so much to see! Solid 5 stars. I love it, and plan to use it in future travels.
4.5 Stars
This book is awesome. It is a great travel tool for those who love to see North America's natural beauty. It does include Canada but not Mexico. It includes state and city parks too, not just national parks. I deduct a half star because by covering so many parks, it just gives a brief overview and adds some information like additional places or hotels. It works as a reference, but for someone wanting more information on an area, more research would be needed. This is also from the author's point of view so they leave out quite a bit. In some instances they do not even mention any parks in a particular state, especially in the middle of the country. If you travel a lot to parks, this is a great starting guide but not exhaustive by any means.
Very outdated list of National parks
This is very outdated and doesn’t include at least 3 National parks. Pinnacles, Gateway Arch and Indiana Dunes. Better books out there!
Full of great ideas. Wonderful!
My daughter and her family got an RV and are obsessed with visiting national and state parks with their two sons, ages 9 and 11. She said that this is one of the best books she has seen on traveling the parks. It has great descriptions of each park, and then offers both the typical attractions for each place as well as an unusual assortment of ideas for things you might not think of doing. If seeing our US parks is something you enjoy, this book is for you. Five stars and highly recommended.
Beautiful photos throughout
The photos in this book are breathtaking. It’s worth buying just to look at the photos and to read about these beautiful parks. There are facts scattered throughout that are interesting to read. The book is laid out well and easy to navigate. It covers National Parks both is the USA and in Canada. Not only is the book useful for know what’s around you, but it’s great if you’re planning a trip. I think it will also make a good addition for our homeschooling to go along with Geography.
Decent book which could use more pictures
This book is loaded with travel ideas - probably too much as you only get limited pictures and descriptions of each idea. It is an enjoyable book to flip through but I would prefer even more pictures and less text as a picture truly is worth a thousand words when you are trying to get a mental image of a park or POI. Once you decide which idea you want to pursue, you will need to gather much more information from other sources anyway.
100 Parks, 5,000 Ideas
100 Parks, 5,000 Ideas is a beautiful book with lots of gorgeous pictures and helpful information and travel tips. However, it is limited in the information it can provide since it does cover so many different places. It's great as an overview to give you some general information, but not detailed enough for actual trip planning.
A must read if you're taking a cross country trip.
This is such a cool vacation idea book. Lots of amazing photos and information about new places to go and see. If you're thinking of taking a trip across country and planing on driving, this book is a must read. It's full of information about places to go and things to see you may come across along the way. Really awesome idea!
These books are amazing
These books from National Geographic are amazing! The photos are vibrant and help make you feel like you are there. The information is valuable and helpful for planning a trip and the content is wonderful. We love camping as a family and this book gave us some great ideas for places to go and things to do that we had not done before! Thank you!
Great photos.
The photos in this book are lovely, and just wonderful. Exactly how good the suggestions are I will find out in time; this book will help us formulate better travel plans, I am sure. I will note that the National Geographic guide is a lot better than the Lonely Planet guides that are competing for some of the same territory.
only NG can do this so well...
well, if u want to know, where to go, this books is the book to get... a few pix and info on 100 parks!! nice, all in one book, that NG is so damn good at... regardless of whether you want to travel, its so nice to just see whats out there in these parks.... another great NG book....
Beware it’s not what you think!
This is NOT a travel guide. It’s a picture book. We put it in our Winnebago to use on trips. Absolutely useless. Pretty pictures but useless for what the title implies
Great Coffee Table Book
Every dentist office should have one. It can keep you occupied for a couple hours or a few seconds. I've been to many of the parks but, of course, my photos weren't as good.
Really great book
This is a really great book! It was very informative on places to go, what to see, what to do, secret tips, helpful tips. Great pictures. Really nice collection.
beautiful book
gorgeous full page photos as typical of National Geographic. the book is organized by regions & is useful as a idea book for outdoor trips.
Great ideas
Great ideas
A must buy
Take this everywhere with me. I love how it gives park names, where to stay and what else to do around them
Perfect
Bought it for my grandfather and he loves reading through it. It's one of his favorite things to pick up. He loves the pictures.
Amazing Ideas
I've been to a number of these places and Joe's descriptions are "right on" about what to see. I look forward to visiting new places and using this book to find new memories!
Good quality
Beautiful book, but I feel the description of the parks are kinda short
