“I’d never done anything crazy like this before – a pilgrimage walk. I was not a hiker, and I wasn’t a Catholic. In fact, I wasn’t even sure I was a Christian. On the last government census when I had to state my religion, I'd said I was a Buddhist, mainly because they’ve had such a hard time in Tibet and I felt they needed my statistical support. I was also not an adventure traveller. For me, adventure travel was flying coach. All this backpacking and wearing of heavy boots and flying off to France to walk ancient pilgrimage routes was a new experience, and not one that made me feel entirely comfortable.” And so Bill Bennett, an Australian based film director, set off on an 800 kilometre walk across Spain to Santiago de Compostela, not sure why he was doing it, and not feeling entirely comfortable. His discomfort increased markedly a few days later when his knee gave out – so the rest of the walk was a “pain management pilgrimage.” But he kept his sense of humour, and his memoir is at times hilarious but also deeply moving, and insightful. In the vein of Bill Bryson and Eric Newby, The Way, My Way takes you on a unique spiritual journey, and gives you a hearty laugh along the way.

If you plan to walk the Camino you must read this book!
A few months ago my wife and I decided to walk the Camino. Since then she has purchased and read many many books from pilgrims personal experiences. When she first began to read "The Way, My Way" she stopped and told me she needed to save it so we could read it together. Reading it "together" meant she reads to me while driving and on our dates nights at Starbucks. Bill writes in a delightful, funny and very descriptive style and you get a sense of being there with him on the Camino. As a self proclaimed "Photo Junkie" I particularly enjoyed his references to his camera and the capturing of images. I understand he has a photographers guide to the Camino called "Photo Camino" that I must check out on Amazon.

I have walked in the shoes of Bill. I too have slept in an albergue in St Jean lying in a bottom bunk bed in a dark room listening to the snores of other pilgrims and wondering what the next day, next week, next month would bring. Bill has captured the feeling and spirit of the Camino with sincerity and humor. I loved reading his account. He has successfully captured the essence of the Camino. I strongly recommend this book whether having walked the Camino many times, one time, or are contemplating or dreaming of walking someday.

There are a lot of Camino books out there, but Bill Bennett's "The Way, My Way" stands out with humour, insight, and honesty. It's the story of an author who can't understand why the pilgrimage is calling him, but knows that he must walk nonetheless, unable to find peace until he feels the Camino de Santiago beneath his boots.

Bill's writing is easygoing, but unafraid to confront real issues of self and others as he walks, all the while serving his readers with healthy doses of self deprecating humour. This is one of those books where people will look at you strangely when you burst into laughter while reading it in a coffee shop, but beware, it will leave you feeling the distant pull of this ancient pilgrimage.

Good book, but not a great book. If you take out all of the words about his knee or feet the book would be half as long. I yearned for more words about the people he met or scenery even what The Way was doing to him internally. After a while I said to my self, I get it your knee hurts and yet you will make it.

I enjoyed his simple conversational style and being humanistic. We are all flawed, can we overcome those flaws and rise up to a greater being?

Australian filmmaker Bill Bennett has written an engaging, easy-to-read Camino account of his journey as a pilgrim. A film based on the book is already available in Australia and will be released in the United States in early 2025. As I read, I could easily visualize many scenes and encounters with the people he meets as a movie. This was Bennett’s first book, written with a filmmaker’s eye. His story proceeds chronologically, with a few flashbacks to earlier experiences, and includes many conversations with himself, which add depth to the story. I laughed and cried, recognizing many of my own pilgrim experiences. One of the techniques I enjoyed was his use of italics rather than quotation marks to represent his conversations with himself and with others. From the very beginning, he wonders, Why am I doing this? After walking seven or eight Caminos, I’m still asking myself that question. Bennett, like me, found the experience transformative, although the why and how may always remain mysteries of the Camino and perhaps any pilgrimage. In a concise eleven-point epilogue, he summarizes what he learned – lessons that will elicit nods of recognition from many pilgrims.

I enjoyed Bill Bennett's memoir of walking the Camino, the pilgrimage trail, from St. Jean Pied de Port in France across northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela. Bennett's account is similar in style to Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods" about hiking the Appalachian Trail. The story is humorous and enjoyable to read, but Bennett is also introspective and shares thoughtful observations on life on El Camino. He describes the countryside and Spanish villages he passed through, the struggles he faced, and the many interesting people he encountered. I wish he had shared more of his interactions with the Spanish people, but not being a Spanish speaker could have impacted this. I'll probably never be able to experience this marvelous pilgrimage firsthand, but it was nice to get a taste of what it might be like from Bill.

I bought the book for my husband to read as the description sounded like something right up his alley.

I found it while actually ordering Finding Love on the Camino by Deborah Wilson whom I met in Astorga while on my own Camino in May. Her book inspired me to return and walk the Camino Norte.

Bill Bennet's humorous and lighthearted memoir has planted a seed for a future Camino for my husband who has never liked walking more than 2 miles! I loved hearing him laugh and stop to ask me questions while he read it. I felt like I was walking the Camino again and enjoying every minute of it. I had to read it myself and loved it. We even tried Coke Zero although my Camino involved the regular kind. Must have needed more calories for all that walking!

An inspirational and honest biography of walking the Camino. It’s helped me become even more determined to complete it for my 40th birthday! As an aussie i was completely enthralled and entertained. I loved this story by Bill Bennett, it was easy to read. I would love to do the Camino one day, but somehow don't think I could walk 800km with a 10kg bag on my back. I admire Bill Bennett for doing the Camino walk in one month despite being in pain with his blistered feet and wonky knee. He met all sorts of interesting people along the way. The book is full of good humour and I laughed at the descriptions of the Italian Pilgrims in their designer gear stepping of a luxurious coach for photographs and only to take off again! The only thing I can say now is that I will miss this book, I enjoyed my own little Camino trip each night, even though it was only through a book! Well done Bill Bennett, I do hope this won't be your only adventure and we shall see another book soon!
