- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2017I initially borrowed this book via Kindle Unlimited and liked it so much that I subsequently purchased it. I am a 6th generation Southerner. My mother and great-grandmother were both fabulous Southern cooks (somehow the cooking gene skipped my grandmother) and I like to think I inherited some of their cooking talent. I have a whole bookcase full of cookbooks, but if I could have just one cookbook of basic, traditional, down-home Southern recipes, this would be it. These are the recipes I grew up on and still cook for my family today. There are no particularly fancy dishes in this book, just things that you would cook for a family meal or maybe a church potluck. In other words, recipes that you will use over and over every day. And there are no combinations of strange ingredients. (Personally, I don't really want to combine collard greens and peanut butter or some-such which seems so popular now with the "new" southern cooking. If you do, you go girl, but it's just not for me.) I have many of these recipes, either exactly the same or very similar, but it's nice to have them all together in one place instead of rummaging through clippings, recipe cards, or around in my poor, aging brain trying to remember how much of this or that to include in a seldom made recipe. That's not to say I didn't learn anything new. I've never fried cucumbers before - actually never even thought about it - and I can't wait to make the Fresh Apple Pound Cake and quite a few other dishes that I am familiar with but have never tried. I can tell you the biscuits will be perfect (it's the same recipe I've been using for 45 years and my mother's before that), the Au Gratin potatoes will be fabulous, all of the fresh pea and butterbean recipes will be perfectly delicious, and the Cheeseburger meatloaf will win rave reviews from your family, especially the kids. (I do put chopped green peppers in mine and use shredded sharp cheese instead of American). I guess I loved this cookbook so much because I know how good these recipes are and I've never seen another Southern cookbook even come close to having this many tried-and-true great recipes gathered together in one place. This would be a great gift for a new cook or someone wanting a taste of the Old South instead of the New. My only regret is that it doesn't come in a printed version so I could give a copy to my granddaughter and add another to my cookbook shelves. Now, I'm going to go check out Mrs. Watson's other cookbooks!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2020Initially, I was kind of disappointed when I didn't see any photos, but this book actually has some really good recipes in it. Some that I hadn't heard of in awhile such as tomato gravy and oatmeal pie. I plan to refer to this book often. I still would've liked to see photos, so I rated it with 4 stars.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2015This cookbook is jam packed with recipes for cooks who want the real deal southern basics. It's especially good for the novice cook who needs great step by step instructions. From breakfast to dessert, there are so many beloved recipes from the South. There are sections on cast iron cooking, biscuits, appetizers, vegetables, salads, main dishes, and desserts that I haven't found in any other cookbook. The section called Miscellaneous is full of recipes for sauces, gravies, stocks, and other southern treats. All the dishes in the book are, and have been, staples on every southern table when friends and family gather for a visit or celebration. As an old southern cook, it's so nice to have everything in one easy to follow book. Thanks S. L. Watson for sharing your family dishes with us.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2015It was a fairly good cookbook with a lot of older receipes.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2015This is a *wonderful*cookbook of all the Southern favorites. I'm serious - I forget exactly how many but I think the book is 486 pages long! I have been a foodie for over 45 years and been cooking for 54 years and this is the most I've been impressed by a cookbook in a loonnnggg time. The book is divided into logical categories that flow in the order you'd make them. Thus it begins with breakfast. I appreciated Ms. Watson's recipes, but just as much I thought her tips on how to cut biscuits were very helpful. When she discusses gravy, she explains how to make milk gravy, but also how to make gravy from a number of other things. I could go on and on ... I'm on my second reading of the book now. So far (3 days ago) I've tried 3 recipes and each one was a total success! I've never been able to make good biscuits before but yesterday they were perfect. They improved due to her tip about NOT twisting the biscuit cutter but rather pushing straight down.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2018These are a lot of the recipes I remember from my childhood, not the so called "Southern" recipes I frequently see in books and magazines, or online. The puddings are made from scratch, not box mixes. I'm fact, everything is made from scratch, which is what I remember my mother and grandmother doing, apart from the occasional boxed cake mix. I'm thrilled with this cookbook, although I wish she had included cheese straws!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cooking from scratch
Most folks don't want to go to all the bother of doing meals from scratch. But let's face it....they taste so much better. This is a good book to have in your kitchen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed there’s no photos!
I read this for FREE on kindle unlimited and I loved it so much I thought I’d buy the book so I can see photos because I feel that photos are a very important part of recipe books. You need to see the finished product! Unfortunately this book arrived today and there’s not a single photo in it so I just as well have saved my £14 and used the kindle instead. 5/5 for content, 2/5 presentation.
