Paradise Lost is an epic poem in blank verse by the 17th-century English poet John Milton (1608–1674). The first version, published in 1667, consisted of ten books with over ten thousand lines of verse. A second edition followed in 1674, arranged into twelve books (in the manner of Virgil's Aeneid) with minor revisions throughout and a note on the versification. It is considered by critics to be Milton's major work, and it helped solidify his reputation as one of the greatest English poets of his time.

The poem concerns the Biblical story of the Fall of Man: the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Milton's purpose, stated in Book I, is to "justify the ways of God to men

Price sticker peels up cover art
Price sticker leaves weird unoxidized spot and peels off some of the cover art. The printing on the cover seems like it would last, but the sticker was easily removed, yet it still peeled up the ink. See my photos. The book itself is great.

Let's face it. Reading Milton is no cakewalk. Oscar Wilde once said a writer was a "prose Milton" then added, "but so is Milton." That's why Anton Lesser's reading is genius. It's so genius, it demonstrates the genius of Milton. Laura Paton can't quite match Anton in his Shakespearean crispness and demonic force, but she only reads the few speeches of Eve.
Yes, it's an abridged version. But when they say abridged, they barely mean it. Whole books are included on the three (THREE!) CDs and ones that aren't read fully are here in Milton's own summaries. I recommend getting the NORTON CRITICAL EDITION OF PARADISE LOST to read along with this (although everything that's read is included in a booklet that also comes (!) with the CDs. The Norton Crit has the full text (should you want it) along with good footnotes and essays.
This is all so well done and so mindbogglingly cheap for how long it is (four hours!), I'm a little baffled why I hadn't heard of it before. Every English teacher will tell you that Milton should be read aloud. So why not have Anton Lesser do it for you? He does it so dern well.

Got this for my wife for St. George's Day (an alternative to Valentine's Day where you give books and flowers). She loves it. Great copy with a cool cover!

The sticker they use on the back doesn't react well with the ink they use on the cover. It eats the paint and when you peel off the sticker the paint lifts off with it. It left a nasty rectangle on the back.

I have multiple copies of Paradise Lost but during a recent move, they got packed away in one of what seems like a million boxes. Since I read Milton every day, I cannot do without a copy. This one is lovely: bound beautifully, sturdy with normal (not “onion skin”) paper. And I believe that everyone can learn to love Milton. He had me from the start, when I read a quote years ago that says the mind is its own place—it can make a hell of heaven and a heaven of hell. Reading a good Milton biography is also a great assistance for appreciating it. But he should be read the way one reads the Bible—a little each day followed by some contemplative thought. I love this edition of the classic.

    Interesting book

Decided to buy this book while it was on sale, and it came in surprisingly good condition. That is a miracle in and of itself because of how it was packaged, but I digress. My only complaint mirrors something I've seen brought up in the reviews, and that is the ink peeling off with the sticker on the back. Not a big deal if you have no intention of getting rid of this, but I opted to leave my sticker on the book as to not damage it further. If it wasn't for that, I'd have given this 5 stars.

This hardcover edition of Paradise Lost was published 2017. Beautifully printed with all 12 of Blake's superb colour illustrations. Useful introduction but no line numbering. For detailed notes consider also buying Caroline Moore's Connell guide.
