Pack Justice (Nature of the Beast Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 650 ratings

Sean’s guardian angel is a feline, but his spirit cheetah prefers rival attorney, Andrea Morgan, over him. Trapped in a failing, dangerous marriage and stalked by an accomplice of one of the most dangerous criminals he’s ever prosecuted, Sean’s troubles are just beginning.

A vacation should have offered him a chance to save his relationship with his wife, Idette. Instead, Sean learns he isn’t the only one with a secret, and his discovery of his wife’s true nature should have killed him.

To ensure Sean’s survival, his cheetah strikes a bargain with a wolf. Faced with life-long enslavement to his wife, becoming an instrument of pack justice seems like the far better alternative.

Unfortunately, pack justice is as brutal as it is swift, and should Sean fail to put an end to Idette’s machinations, everything he values will be targeted and destroyed, including his chance to be with the one woman who might be able to help him salvage the ruins of his life.

With Pack Justice, I sort of feel that RJ Blain takes her Witch and Wolf world up a notch into a level that I reserve for Laurell K. Hamilton and a few others. If mentioning that scares you, don't let it scare you away from this very fun read.

This isn't that kind of book.

It's rather intriguing from the get go and completely plotted out in such a way and pace as to make reading this from cover to cover exciting. Not to dark, but a bit of darkness. Not too Violent, but there is violence, and not too Sexy-time, but there is the sex. On top of all that are interesting, quirky characters like Sean, that are easy to not only find sympathy for, but to get into their heads and appreciate their actions.

A great story that immersed me in the world. New and old with the Inquisition that keeps you reading late thru the night. Definitely a great read and highly recommend.

I've now read several of the author's books. This is a new serial but part of the same world as the "Witch&Wolf" stories. As in her other writings, this book is well written, the style is engaging and the characters are interesting and likeable. This book is told from the perspective of a man who has been a shapeshifter for years but not a wolf and not part of the underground society that is prevalent in most of her other books. So he starts off knowing nothing of the shifter world. Which makes this a good book for people who aren't familiar with the author's world, as they can learn about it along with him as he slowly figures stuff out. But it's also still interesting for more established readers because he is different from the others so if you know how the world works you can spot the differences and there's a sort of "inside joke" feeling to it.

The general tone of this book seemed to me a bit less whimsical or more serious than her other books. That doesn't affect the quality but there is a noticeable difference so I'm guessing it might appeal to people differently.

The writing is 5 star quality, but I can't give it the full five because the plot doesn't resolve. It isn't a cliffhanger and the characters all end in a good place, but the main plot of the book is him trying to deal with his wife (and others) trying to kill him, and at the end he still hasn't done much about it. Basically, this is the opening part of a serial, not a series. There's an important difference even though many indie authors don't seem to realize that.

While there's no complete plot, there is still a good amount of action and excellent character growth arcs. So it still has enough meat to it to be worth the chew.

Overall, it's a well written and pleasant read with a mildly disappointing ending. A good diversion for an afternoon or two. Worth reading on its own or as part of the serial. Definitely recommended.

While I gave the book a 5 for story etc I would give it (and would hunt series) a much lower score for being unfair to readers regarding finishing series. An author writes as they wish but the reality is that they make a kind of a contract when they start a series. Dragging these out over many years is unfair to the readers.

I'm an avid reader and RJ Blain is one of my very favorite authors. Pack Justice is another hit! Great story. Great characters and an HEA plus a cliffhanger. It's hard to put down any of her books, but the Fenerec stories are particularly special. Enjoy it!

R J Blain's characters are always so likeable. This is one of the many books by Ms Blain that I purchased and instantly bought all of the others I could find. I have somewhere between 45-50 of her books. Love them.

Binge reading RJ Blain. She is good. She tells marvelous stories.
I like the main characters of Sean and Andrea. I will say that sometimes they remind me of high schoolers with their romance and that is a bit irritating. The story line makes up for it though. I don’t believe I have run into a feline shape shifter or a shaman before. I look forward to seeing where this leads. Can’t wait for book 2 and Idette gets what she deserves!

This is about the 4th re read of Pack Justice, and I'm still waiting for the next one ! In fact, more... is the operative word for any of her books! I still have saved Wolf Hunt, in my library.... as my NEW fix... but since I'm going to have to go through the rest of the series first.... I'm giving myself a bit more time, and hopefully by then Blending In, and Cheetahs Never Win, will be in my library!
By the way... I LOVE the new Inquisitor book cover!

I loved this standalone in the Witch and Wolf universe. All the characters are well filled out, fun and interesting and the plot is excellent. However the author is an evil Bratasaurus Wench and I WANT to know what happens next! 😂

    Highly, highly recommended.
