About the Author

Kieron Gillen first came to attention as a comic writer with his 2006's Phonogram, with Jamie McKelvie. They continued to work together across the next fifteen year, culminating with smash hit The Wicked + the Divine. Since then he's had the pleasure of creating stories with other artists such as Stephanie Hans (DIE, We Called Them Giants) and Caspar Wijngaard (the current sensation, The Power Fantasy). He has worked on Marvel Comics biggest books, such as Immortal X-men, Young Avengers, Thor, Iron Man, Star Wars, Eternals and Darth Vader, (where he co-created Doctor Aphra). In a previous life he was an award-winning pop-culture critic. In his current life, he tries to sleep more. He lives in Bath, UK.

Stephanie Hans is a seasoned illustrator. She works mostly for the books mainstream market with clients as big as Marvel, DC Comics, Image Comics, Dark Horse, Valiant, Dynamite, Vertigo, and Boom Studios.

Kieron Gillen is a British writer, journalist and critic best known for his work in comics and his previous work in entertainment journalism.

Gillen's first graphic novel, PHONOGRAM (with artist/co-creator Jamie McKelvie), was published through IMAGE COMICS in 2006. Since then he's found work writing for MARVEL, AVATAR, BOOM, TOKYOPOP, DYNAMITE and more that don't spring to mind right now.

At Marvel, he's written runs on books including THE UNCANNY X-MEN, THOR, YOUNG AVENGERS, IRON MAN, JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY, STAR WARS, DOCTOR APHRA and DARTH VADER.

Books he's created included UBER, MERCURY HEAT and THREE, but is best known for the ongoing gods-as-popstar series with long time collaborators Jamie McKelvie and Matt Wilson THE WICKED + THE DIVINE launched to both huge critical and commercial success in 2014. It will conclude in 2019.

He is working on other things.

In his previous life as a critic, his work has appeared in WIRED, THE GUARDIAN, PLAYSTATION MAGAZINE UK, PC GAMER, EDGE and far too many others to count. In 2007 he was one of the founders of ROCKPAPERSHOTGUN.COM, what is now the world's premier PC-centric games blog.

He once played records for DMC to rap over.

Messed up pages and binding
I ordered this book back in August and unfortunately I didn't get to reading it until today. I came across this page while reading- the pages are completely stuck in the binding making it impossible to get them out without cutting the paper. While I've missed the opportunity to return this I still wanted to point this out because this is very frustrating to see in a book. Overall the story so far was amazing and so was the art but being unable a good 3-4 pages is very unfortunate.

This second volume is pretty different from the first one. All the setup is gone and now we're just focused on the world of Die. There's a lot thats being peeled back which is pretty awesome. I definitely want more in this world though it feels a bit rushed. I wish we had more time in this world but feels like a limited series. I'm not too certain what's going to happen but some pretty dramatic changes happen here which make me think that there isn't too much more of the story. Maybe I'll be completely wrong.

The characters and the world are my favorite part of this. I love how different they are and how much they grapple with their issues. I truly can't think of a favorite one and they're mostly what I'm here for.

The mystery behind Die is interesting as well and something that I'd like to explore more but, again, it feels like we've explored most of the content.

Love this comic and can not wait for the third trade paperback to come out. I never messed with D&D and still loved this comic. Do not need to be a role player to enjoy.

Characters self-consciously describing their emotions seems quite tedious, until you realize it is what rpg players do all the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Stunning Sequel
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 14, 2020
This volume comprises issues #6 - #10 of DIE, and continues the story of Ash, Matt, Angela, Chuck, and Izzy as they attempt to reunite their group so that they might escape the fantasy-horror world of Die.

Whereas the first Volume proved to be a rollercoaster of an introduction, thrusting the reader from realm to realm and building the world that these characters are forced to return to at breakneck pace, this sophomore effort slows the pace and engages more with each of the protaganists troubled histories as they grapple with the impact of their past decisions.

Each character is given form and nuance through individual explorations across each chapter, with all five party members offering glimpses into their pasts that contextualise and deepen their relationships not just to one another, but to their own personas within the fantasy world. The way in which these two elements, the person and the character they embody, are woven together is an incredible achievement of writing and I am still left turning over the connections and subtlies that Gillen has so carefully embedded within.

Stephanie Hans' artwork shines as well, with the dream-like watercolour palette and wonderfully detailed expressions and composition lifting every panel. The horror and majesty of this world is rendered exquisitely, with tender scenes of emotion and terrifying monstrosity depicted with a equal beauty that reinforces the dichotomies the protagnists face within themselves.

This is truly a masterwork series from all parties involved, and I cannot recommend this highly enough.
