Die in the Wool: A Knitty Kitty Cozy Mystery Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 1,558 ratings

A sudden death has Tash Mallory all stitched up!

Tash Mallory's future is in the balance when her employer "Auntie Fran" (no relation) fires her from the knitting shop job she's held for twenty years. Even worse, when Tash returns to confront her, she finds Fran's dead body in the back room.

Luckily, the doctor soon concludes the death is from natural causes. A decision cast into doubt when Tash finds out she's inherited Fran's store and home.

With an aggrieved nephew determined to fight the will in court and Fran's despondent fiancé pointing the finger of blame, Tash battles to clear her name. The police mightn't believe the death was murder, but the good folks of Patiti are quicker to rush to judgement.

If Tash can't manoeuvre through the undercurrent of small town politics, winning the inheritance will be a Pyrrhic victory. Worse, the doctor's assessment might be wrong, leaving a killer on the loose.

Tash has worked in Auntie Fran’s yarn shop for twenty years, all the while putting up with Auntie Fran’s crotchety personality. But when she tries to help a customer correct a wrong order, generated by Fran, she is fired on the spot. Not sure what to do, her friend advises her to go in to work the next day like nothing happened. Surprised that she was first to arrive and unlock the shop, the real surprise is that she finds Auntie Fran on the floor of the dye room dead! A cute and entertaining cozy mystery, made even more so by the antics of Tangle, Fran’s black kitten. The will leaves the shop and house to Tash and the rest of the estate to her nephew, Bob, who promptly accuses Tash of murder and vows to contest the will! Can Tash figure out what killed Fran and clear her name?

This was ok for a first in a series book. It was crafted well, paced well, plotted well, and had all the elements of a good cozy mystery. It was a bit lacking in detail, color and flavor, as some series-1st books often are, but there is a lot of potential for future books in the series to deliver more compelling details on the setting and characters. I’ll be getting the next book in the series, since I’m curious to know what the author will do with the protagonist and where she’ll take this series.

I didn’t get the sense of it being set in New Zealand, and had completely forgotten that element of it while reading the book, even though the town’s unusual name had kept puzzling me. I’d have liked more of a description of the surroundings, buildings, flora, fauna, and birds, for instance. It had seemed odd to me, also, that the protagonist seemed to have only a single contemporary friend-neighbor, though she’d worked in the town for 20-years. Similarly, after that length of time working there, it had seemed strange that she’d not have been more familiar with the ways and manners of the town and its residents, and would have needed specific instructions from elderly acquaintances about apologizing properly and etc.

I’d really like to know more about the protagonist’s background, where she might have lived or gone to school before working at the shop, how she’d come to be a yarn enthusiast & crafter, whether she has any family or childhood friends elsewhere, what her other interests might be, what sort of past she might have, what her favorite things are, what her residence and lifestyle are like, what her decorative sensibilities are, and whether the kitten will become a cat-character rather than a mere prop making little messes. I’m hoping to find out a lot more about the protagonist in the next book!

This was such a fun read. The characters were likeable, the kitten was adorable, and I enjoyed the story. I'd recommend Die in the Wool to fans of light mysteries, cats, knitting, or spirited old ladies.

Natasha's boss, Auntie Fran, spreads misery wherever she goes, even firing Natasha for a mistake she had made herself. When Natasha finds Auntie Fran dead the next morning, the doctor thinks she died of a heart attack, which was surprising because she was quite healthy. Natasha doesn't think she was murdered until she has a heart attack herself. Plenty of red herrings to keep the reader guessing. And a cute, playful kitten. Natasha also discovered that as mean and even cruel as Auntie Fran was, she could be surprisingly kind and generous.

Yarn store, a kitten, a murder, a best friend who likes to drink wine. Perfect setting for a cozy mystery. Short book, quick read. Hopefully subsequent books will develop the characters more deeply. At this point I do not want to sell my house and move in next door to A Tall Yarn. I would enjoy going to the retirement center for weekly knitting meet-ups though. Good start that will maybe morph into an addiction.

I enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down until the last word had been read. I certainly didn't foresee the ending.
The main characters made me smile and certain surprising antics caused me to laugh out loud . Who in their right mind would accuse someone of murder, in front of witnesses, more than once?
Was it murder or an accident? 😆🤗😂

The main character, Tash, faces challenges with her demanding and difficult boss, Auntie Fran. Auntie Fran, who is in her 70s, becomes furious when a customer complains about an order, and when Tash points out that the order was mishandled, Auntie Fran fires her.

Upon returning to her small rental home, Tash receives notice from her landlord that she must move. Her bad day continues into the following day when she returns to the store to speak with Auntie Fran, only to discover Auntie Fran's lifeless body.

The unexpected twists and turns in this mystery, combined with a comical ensemble of characters, make it an enchanting tale and a worthwhile read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oh what a tangled web we weave .......

A decent read. I didn't guess the culprit until nearly the end and I must admit that it was a devious plot. The characters need a bit of strengthening especially the FMC. She still comes across as slightly weak and ineffective. The rest are slightly stronger but need a bit more filling. The strongest surprisingly is Tangley, the kitten. He full, mischievous and very vibrant.
She's worked in the wool shop for 20 years and getting fired over a mistake that wasn't her fault is just a bit hard to take. Now having discovered her former employer's body, found out that she's inherited the shop and house whilst being told that the nephew will be contesting the will seems almost unreal. To top it off she's been accused of being a murderer at the funeral. Together with her BFF they start looking into things. Affairs, a wool order, a dye that seems to cause adverse results and being evicted are too much for her after release from the hospital. Who, if anyone, was responsible for the death? And why?
